Facial Hair, Patriotism and the Enemy in American History

      By Juan Cole

      ——————————-

Media Matters for America put together a collage of Fox Cable News commentators smearing the father of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl as having a Taliban-like beard and maybe even being a Taliban sympathizer. Thanks to MM4A for the Laura Ingram clip in which she says that if he weren’t so light-skinned he could be a terrorist. You always knew that American racists, frustrated by the Civil Rights movement and unable so easily to use racial slurs in public, had adopted ‘terrorist’ as a dog whistle. But to have it so explicitly stated!
      .
      .
The Fox love for the “Duck Dynasty” in contrast to the Bergdahl beard was first pointed out by the wittiest man in America, Jon Stewart, on The Daily Show.

    http://www.epi.org/blog/watch-jobs-day-time-high-indicator-rising/

It is very likely that when the jobs numbers are released tomorrow morning, we will learn that the total number of jobs in the U.S. labor market surpassed its pre-recession peak. I predict you will see many headlines along the lines of “U.S. Employment at All-Time High.”

It is difficult to exaggerate how not a big deal this is. Total employment is almost always rising, as the figure below shows. An all-time high of something that is almost always rising is just not that interesting.

Furthermore, it is an utterly meaningless benchmark economically. Because the working-age population (and with it, the potential labor force) is growing all the time, we should have added millions of jobs over the last six-plus years just to hold steady. That means that when we get back to the prerecession employment level, there will still be a huge gap in the labor market. We currently have a gap in the labor market of 7.1 million jobs. When the numbers are released on Friday, that gap will likely drop to 7.0 million. We are far, far from healthy labor market conditions.

“I predict you will see many headlines along the lines of “U.S. Employment at All-Time High.”

Nope, I don’t think we will see many such headlines. The media rarely frames economic news under this President that way – usually these positive frames are found on pro-Obama blogs and websites, and tweets from individuals who support PBO/DEMS. Meanwhile, I’m not exactly sure what this person’s point is – that we shouldn’t celebrate the HUGE economic improvement that this President has seen (while holding the GOP accountable?)

The two things are not mutually exclusive. We CAN and SHOULD celebrate the increase in job creation, while pointing out the GOP’s malfeasance in creating more jobs/economic growth. We don’t have to be depressed or demoralized about the strides we’ve made in order to be realistic that there is room for improvement. Nena I’m not sure what your take from this piece is – but this screams “CONCERN TROLL” at me.

She throws this out there but does not give any reasons or place the blame where it rightfully belongs. All she’s interested in is trying to pre-emptively keep people deflated about a potentially positive jobs report.

        June 5, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Yes, hf. TROLL TROLL TROLL No news can ever be good in troll kingdom.
If a democrat wins they say the turnout was low.
If a repub loses they make believe they won anyway

We can defeat this by declaring PBO a Winner in every way we can. Should be easy because it is the truth.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Johnnie McC only recently got his name attached to this to divert attention from *his* lack of action re the recent veteran’s issues in his state. Now he has something to point to when next the subject comes up! I honestly see this ….. this….. ahm… ‘vet’ as a selfish, no-honour, no-account opportunist. Always irks me when media points out how ‘honourable’ he was during the 2008 elections because he corrected the little old bigot in his audience. He only did it because some had started to remark on the untrammeled hatred being spewed by GOP crowds with any pushback by the ‘leaders’.

    A comment I stumbled on:

“What Republicans say will happen now: Terrorists will be emboldened to take more Americans hostage in order to secure prisoner transfers.

Why that’s bullshiat:the US has engaged in prisoner swaps long into and before the cold war and terrorists are already well accustomed to this tactic. Additionally, everyone knows that American POWs/hostages make good collateral, no matter what you’re getting in return. That’s why North Korea does the thing it does as often as it does.

What will really happen now: Next time an American solider gets captured, his captors will tell him that the opposition party in America will call him a traitor and a bad solider if the President tries to rescue him, and so the President won’t rescue him for fear of creating a political incident. The POW will remember Bergdahl. In time he’ll come to believe that nobody is coming for him, and that his country has left him to die because he’s politically inconvenient. He may lose hope because of this if he wouldn’t have lost hope otherwise, and will do so more quickly if he would have lost hope anyway.

This is the legacy the un-American dickbags in the Republican Party are leaving for the men and women in Uniform that we send off to war now and in the future.”

The timing of those polls was so glaringly transparent…it’s not enough to simply black out his coverage, they now have to post toxic GOP propaganda (AKA polls) to compete with whatever little coverage he’s getting.

Seeing what the McDaniel campaign has done – without losing votes – highlights the absolute lack of investigative journalism today. Any “reporters” still standing are too busy attacking a POW to look at the reality of such people getting into political office. Frightening that the freedom of the press has truly become freedom to LIE.

Thank you much, Ms Nerdy W!

PBO is indeed ‘Winning Every Day’ for the American people….and the world. If the U.S. could, in 2016, stumble upon one more leader with ½ his bent, his focus and his determination, the world would very definitely be put on a much stabler path for the long term.

They pretty much have shown that they can’t be trusted to keep a secret or not share a confidence until an appropriate time….so for all this talk of honor and who’s a traitor to the country….they are showing themselves for who they are. Politics over people.

Bowe Bergdahl witnessed a careless manslaughter in 2009. The killing of a child.

And then that killing was covered up by the officers in his Army unit: no report to Army Inspector General, no unit prosecution, no detention or reduction in pay grade, no punishment whatsoever for the MRAP driver who crushed the child.

Call them “wogs.” Call them “towel heads.” Talk of putting boots up their asses. Their lives don’t matter. And that after General McChrystal committed U.S. forces to defending these villagers, first priority.

“I am ashamed to even be american. The horror of the self-righteous arrogance that they thrive in. It is all revolting.”
    — Bowe Bergdahl

Bowe Bergdahl was raised as a devout Christian, a Calvinist, a follower of Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Mary, Lord of Lords, Messiah, Wonderful. As a Christian he refused to accept hateful delusions.
His last email to his parents made clear that his U.S. Army unit suffered a failure of leadership. This failure extended to support for an aggressive hatred of the local Afghan people.

It is all becoming clearer now…PBO did right by this man…

Interesting that this Josh Korder that’s speaking out against BB signed an agreement NOT to talk about BB…Gee, how’s THAT workin’ out??!!
And that he (Korder) got a “less than honorable ” discharge from the Army.

A broken record, I know – but much of the documented information came from a Rolling Stone piece by Michael Hastings in 2012. Not one person in the current msm bothered to vet these guys at all.

There’s a military report that refutes a good deal of the bile coming from the unhinged RW and the lazy whiny left. No journalism left anymore. None.

      This type of discharge:

The most severe type of military administrative discharge is the Other Than Honorable Conditions. Some examples of actions that could lead to an Other Than Honorable Discharge include security violations, use of violence, conviction by a civilian court with a sentence including prison time, or being found guilty of adultery in a divorce hearing (this list is not a definitive list; these are only examples). In most cases, veterans who receive an Other Than Honorable Discharge cannot re-enlist in the Armed Forces or reserves, except under very rare circumstances. Veteran’s benefits are not usually available to those discharged through this type of discharge.

There is way more here that meets the eye…

McCain: Those Accusing Me Of Bergdahl Flip-Flop Are ‘Lying’

In a statement released before his appearance on CNN, McCain’s communications director, Brian Rogers, accused the Obama administration of twisting his words.

“The Obama Administration is obviously having a difficult time defending this deal, and is desperate to discredit its critics on both sides of the aisle. But that doesn’t give the White House and their allies license to distort and selectively quote Senator McCain’s words,” Rogers said.

Thought this was interesting—-that the official report on Bergdahl differs from what some of his fellow soldiers are saying. And I was not aware that he had wandered off before—at his training post in Ca. and at least one other time from his post in Afghanistan——and had always returned. He was said to be the “free spirit” type and always talking about wanting to see how far he could go——or wanted to go somewhere to see the sunset. And there is no mention of leaving any note, no one knows for sure if he intended to leave permanently etc. The hired gun soldiers who are going on every TV show to smear him seem to just be repeating rumors—–about an overheard phone call, about other soldiers killed in the search for him (blaming every combat death in an active war zone on this), and many discrepancies where what once was true is no longer reported as true. I think so many rumors are being spread, no one yet knows any confirmed facts.
And think it’s interesting that the news media only reports on congress people who were dissatisfied with last night’s briefing, always mentioning the few familiar Dem names——when there are many who had the opposite view. Strange, eh?

” According to the military report, Bergdahl was never called out or disciplined for wandering off, making it likely that he would continue doing so.”

I read that he had wondered off one more than one occasion….now this ragtag team of Army misfits wants to use something against him that he had done before and never got in trouble for…because it’s a convenient ruse? I want to know what this platoon did over there.

Looks like you jumped the shark with your main man Korder.

He was issued a ” Less than Honorable ” discharge……..maybe his $$$ begging is for a defense fund.

Is he the one that ran over the Afghan little girl with the MRAP that Bowe Bergdahl told about ?

Hillary is toast. She will be defeated in the dem primary. She is completely politically tone deaf. She seems to be centering her campaign on voters who will never vote for her. Last I checked Palin is not very popular with dems. She really may be mentally ill.

What a lousy explanation. Campaign Obama knew that the McCain camp My goodness, slowly but surely we are watching the demonstration of a hard fact: Hillary Clinton has been loyal to President Obama only as long as it suited her needs.

I have to say that at the end of her term as SoS, when she was interviewed on 60 minutes in a joint interview with the President, I watched very closely for the body language. While President Obama was warm and expressed real friendship towards her, she was more restrained and I just got the feeling that in the case of Hillary, the friendship was a bit “staged”. I’m sorry and maybe I shouldn’t say this but for some years now I’ve been convinced that the Clintons haven’t changed their opinion of the President; they have some sort of contempt and are convinced that they are far superior to him. I’ve been convinced that they’ve worked behind the scenes for years to keep the caucus from developing too much loyalty or admiration towards the president. In cocktail parties, political gatherings, etc… always commiserating on the supposed “mistakes” of the President, never letting anybody forget that they, the Clintons, would have done better. Always seeding doubts about his competency, either in domestic and foreign policy. Now they’re doubling down on their quest for control of the democratic party, making very clear to every democratic official that they’ll watch who is loyal to them.

Heck, there are rumors that they don’t want democrats to win big in 2014 so Barack Obama won’t be able to achieve anything more and by 2016, americans disgusted by republican obstructionism will vote democrat en masse and they, the Clintons, will return to the White House with a big democratic majority in Congress.

I’m not saying they won’t do good things for americans if they get back into the White HOuse. But their first priority is always themselves and their political power.

I’m aware that republicans will play lots of games to divide democrats , maybe leak false info on Hillary dissing the president for example. But there is TRUTH in the fact that the Clintons are not such big fans of the president and won’t hesitate to hurt him personally or politically if it helps their quest for power. It’s a well known fact that the Clintons are very self-centered.

I will be grateful if their victory means a total humiliation of the GOP. But in terms of character, courage and vision, they don’t compare to the President. By a long shot. The Clintons are traditional political animals. Very good ones. Barack Obama is a statesman of impeccable character.

PBO said NOTHING about Palin other than slamming the media for attacking her children – he was a major reason that she wasn’t called out for being a very poor mother of a very mixed up family – while claiming to be the world’s best ever parent.

She’s fine. Took a few days but her tummy’s back to normal. Had a lot of clean-up to do! She wiped out every dog bed, the rug, the sofa. Mr. 57 claimed to have cleaned it up – a……. no.

She’s eating again, wagging her tail, barking at the people walking on the street. She never was lethargic or looked sick, just tummy issues.

        Thanks for asking, Cindy.
