    Top 15 Ways Republicans Have Screwed Our Soldiers and Veterans

    Republicans love waging wars, but they sure don’t seem to love America’s soldiers and veterans. Whether they’re getting our soldiers killed in Iraq or cutting their food stamps here at home, here are the 15 top ways the GOP screws those who serve.

    For 99ts if you’re still around—-wonder if you’ve seen this number John Oliver did on your fearless leader on his HBO show Sunday. Wow—–Abbott’s really terrible—–and embarrassing. No wonder you crab.

      Do not tie me up with that man – like you were not responsible for GWB – I am not responsible for the worst PM this country has ever seen. I haven’t seen the clip, but I have no doubt as to its content.

      It’s not only the man – but his policies – he has removed any humanity from the country – he has viciously attacked the poor, he has stopped 99.9% of foreign aid and closed the department responsible for same. We are a small country – but per capita wealthy. We can afford to help our poorer neighbors – but Abbott and his party are selfish to the core – if his party gets rid of him, they may win another election. if the Opposition got its act together they would be back in power.

      It is funny – as an Englishman John Oliver knows Australia well. If you want to see our equivalent (could he be dumber than) of GWB do watch.

    They were FOR it before they were AGAINST it: Chips, Nerdy, LL, Amk, zizi, or any other bt who has the time, it would be nice to have a TOD thread devoted exclusively to highlighting Twitter posts (and other items from news reports, blogs) from individuals who were yelling/screaming/ for the return of the POW, and all of a sudden have changed their minds…THUS exposing their rank hypocrisy and cynical political posturing vis-a-vis President Obama.

    we have to connect the dots about the attacks on Sgt. Bergdhal to others that have gone before;

    It is important to remember that gop attacks on veterans & POW who don’t conform with their idea of perpetual war is not new;

    these gop get uglier in their attacks the bigger the stakes they don’t care who or what they hurt in the process;

    families of active servicemen and servicewomen & those of vets need to be concerned about this – next time the gop-target could be a friend or member of your family;

      It was pitch perfect. Her short form explanation of ODS was great. I hope everyone will be able to watch it. And Senator Chris Murphy (CT) was terrific as usual.

    • June 4, 2014 at 9:22 pm

      Except she errs on the Snowden-bandwagon or the privacy issue, she is usually pretty good because she does her research. Her shows are usually educative.

      But I hate to disappoint you: Jake Tapper, Tweety and Co, the toddlers from the WHPC, will never learn because they suffer from ADD and couldn’t care less about the quality of their journalism. They prefer to practice gotcha questions to squeeze the President when he travels overseas.

      Since Barack Obama was elected president some people especially the GOP and newly minted far right racist teabaggers have lost their collective minds. The man was born from a white mother and African father, raised lovingly by his white grandparents in Hawaii, went to a predominately white/Asian school, is surrounding with all races all his life, and loves all mankind. Hollywood casting could not make up someone as perfect to be the first African American president if they tried yet he is hated by the GOP and the media because he does not care what they think and they can not stop him from doing what he was elected to do. It breaks my heart that the media is harming this young pow soldier and his family because they hate this president. They can’t bring PBO down so they go after innocent people who they once wanted rescued now he is garbage to them because PBO did not create a war, or drama for their ratings. Another sad day in America.

        June 5, 2014 at 7:51 pm

        Yet what would they have been saying if the soldier died in captivity because PBO did not want to trade 5:1? What if he did not do a trade or informed the Congress then waited the thirty days while it was leaked and the deal fell through? This was a total lose lose situation since the press could spin it either way. The GOP were ready to go either way with it against Obama and the press were ready to aid them as usual.

    After a second escape attempt, the American hostage was being moved so often, American commandos would’ve had to raid a dozen safehouses in Pakistan at once. The Pentagon rejected the idea of a rescue mission for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl because he was being moved so often by his Taliban captors that U.S. special operators would have had to hit up to a dozen possible hideouts inside Pakistan at once in order to have a chance at rescuing him. That’s according to U.S. officials, who also say that the Obama administration also did not want to risk the political fallout in Pakistan from another unilateral U.S. raid, like the Navy SEAL raid that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011……

    In his first escape, Afghan sources said he avoided capture for three days and two nights before searches finally found him, exhausted and hiding in a shallow trench he had dug with his own hands and covered with leaves. In his second bid for freedom, which has not been previously reported, Bergdahl made it to a remote village in the mountainous part of Pakistan, the former Afghan official said. The villagers simply returned him to his captors in the Haqqani Network. The U.S. officials were not familiar with details of the second escape attempt…….

    ….However, three special operations officials say rescue missions to bring him back were contemplated multiple times over the years. When Gen. Stanley McChrystal was in charge in Afghanistan, the U.S. had a better idea of his precise location, and a mission was mapped out and briefed to McChrystal. He rejected it, the officials say, because the mission planners warned of a high probability that Bergdahl and at least two to three special operations troops would be killed in the operation, so well-guarded was he by Haqqani fighters in a hard-to-reach mountain hideout on the Pakistani side of the border.

      Sen. Risch R-ID During the years that Bowe Bergdahl was a prisoner, U.S. Sen. Jim Risch and other members of the Senate Intelligence Committee kept an eye on drone attacks being carried out in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other nearby countries. Committee members worked to ensure that Bergdahl wouldn’t become a casualty of one of those attacks carried out by unmanned vehicles, Risch said Sunday. They reviewed documents and videotapes of bombing runs and kept in contact with military leaders overseeing those attacks.

      “They knew if they endangered Sergeant Bergdahl it would be a bad day for them,” Risch told the Idaho Statesman. http://t.co/bkrjx0oy5j

      On Sunday, a day after the U.S. Army sergeant from Hailey was released after nearly five years of captivity, Risch said he was thankful for Bergdahl’s safe return. “The focus for all of us in Idaho should be on the celebration,” Risch said……As a member of the Intelligence Committee, Risch said, he was privy to information on Bergdahl’s whereabouts. He said senators weren’t aware of his precise location but had a sense of what region he was in within a country. “There wasn’t a week that went by that we didn’t get a briefing,” Risch said.

    The best antidote to the ugly is the smiling and beautiful face of our First Lady working to help veterans. She, in her very person, is a rebuke to all that the haters stand for. The hits just keep coming. We have GOP pols flip flopping about doing everything possible to secure the release of Bergdahl, deleting congratulatory tweets, showing fake outrage about not being notified when they were informed and updated since 2011, and Fox with a specific poll question on the issue as far back as June 2013. And the media reporting is all about how the Bergdahl release is a problem for President Obama and the Democrats.

  29. June 4, 2014 at 10:44 pm

    I hope I am not being politically incorrect by posting this article. It is a good reminder of some historical facts.

    “What really chaps my ass is that if Mathews was worth his paycheck, he might have mentioned that Richard Nixon freed McCain from the POW camp, by trading Vietnamese POWs for him. Yes he did. And no one questioned it. Because those were the days when you brought your boys home, and figured out the rest later.

    And, check out/and or remember Taibbi’s 2008 article on exactly why McCain ended up in that POW camp, and I think you’ll find as many questionable issues as w/Bergdahl.”

    McLoss was freed against many Vietnamese, the same man who is now questioning the nature of the Taliban exchange.

    Maddow is reporting that the teen mother school-Catherine Ferguson is finally closing in Detroit. The charter firm hired to run it, ran it into the ground, and a school that as recently as four years ago sent 90% of its students to college is CLOSING. Nobody ever answered the question as to HOW THE HELL a school graduating 90% of its students gets on anybody’s CLOSURE LIST!’ So, they closed a WORKING PUBLIC SCHOOL, and turned it over to the scam known as Charter Schools. To the scam of a for profit company that didn’t dedicate 30 years of their lives serving those young women.

      Problem for the media is that the Obama administration has been so competent and so scandal-free, that they have to SEARCH for something controversial to say. They find themselves relevant only if they can find some “fault” somewhere. So the minute they think they have found a “problem” or a “scandal” they jump on the bandwagon. Boy, they must miss the Bush administration; at least during that period they had REAL, UGLY scandals to cover….

        For too many years anything the Bush administration did was A okay – and now they insult everyone on the planet by bringing in Bush administration people to attack PBO. When the media was given the “freedom to lie” they sure took that idea in their stride.
