NBC News: Podium Shuffle: Carney Resigns As White House Press Secretary

President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance Friday to announce that his chief spokesman Jay Carney is leaving his post behind the podium. Obama called Carney one of his closest advisers and friends at the White House in remarks to the press in the White House briefing room. “In April, Jay came to me in the Oval Office and said that he was thinking of moving on, and I was not thrilled, to say the least,” he said. “But Jay has had to wrestle with this decision for quite some time.”

“I will continue to rely on him as a friend and an adviser after he leaves to spend as much of his summer as he can with his kids before he decides what’s next for him,” he added. “Whatever it is, I know he’s going to be outstanding at it.” Carney called holding the job “an honor and a joy for me.” Obama announced that communications deputy Josh Earnest will take over the job as the president’s press secretary.

I had to hear of Jay’s resignation via CanadaBarb who’s on the golf course. In Canada. Ha. We are certainly well connected, TOD! But Jay should have called me, so I could have been one of the first to thank him for a job incredibly well done. I would never try to talk any of these fine folks in the Obama administration out of leaving, because think how hard they’ve all been working.

      May 30, 2014 at 3:53 pm

and there we have it.. exactly what the republicans live for- gutting, preventing anything that works for the regular person, the poor/ middle class. If we get a majority repub congress.. we will see a lot more of this: an end to public education, privatizing everything.. and today I include the VA in that. I believe that this Congress will not approve a replacement for Sec. Shinseki. If we don’t win every election from now on- they will systematically take everything that remotely benefits those of us who can’t afford the ‘private’ entitites.

      • 78 57andfemale
        May 30, 2014 at 3:56 pm

They are nothing if not shrewd and skillful. I just saw a tweet by Boehner, telling “Democrats” to bring the VA Accountability bill to a vote. This is the one filibustered by 41 REPUBLICANS.

Skillful messaging. And yet we have Dem’s falling all over each other to run away from ACA and call for Shinseki’s head instead of – in one, sustained, meaningful cry of outrage – blame Bush/Cheney and the traitorous GOP for not funding or implementing solutions at the VA.

        • 79 sherijr
          May 30, 2014 at 3:58 pm

I agree, and as to Boehner he is the worst sort of hypocrite. I am so angry today about Gen Shinseki. I am sick of republicans and how they play us all, and how so many suck up to them, the media and some dems. Republicans have never cared about we vets and they prove it consistently.

          • 80 57andfemale
            May 30, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Republicans would NEVER do this, but there they were, a few Dem’s tripping over themselves to look like GOP. Some who should know better, but I’ve seen Boxer do it and others. When will they every learn?

Turn it back on GOP cuts and GOP sequester and John McCain who was either clueless or heartless about the vets in his state. Tout the fact that PBO opened the doors to veterans going back generations. Blame Bush/Cheney! SUPPORT YOUR PRESIDENT.

I talk to a lot of ‘white noise’ people for whom politics is background noise but they vote. They hear the GOP yell outrage with no dissent, and hear enough Dem’s equivocate and whine. and a little lie like Boehner’s tweet takes a little space in their white noise heads. Some Dems are outraged, MSM won’t report GOP failures & blocking of VA bills, ALL of the GOP is outraged, so it must be Dem’s not allowing a vote in the Senate, right?

            Infuriating.

Charles Pierce take on the Shinseki resignation (at least he didn’t call it a firing like so many have). I agree with most of it, including the inevitability of it, even though I wish it hadn’t happened.

Wow! Everyone, this has sure been an emotional day. I came over to post about the defeatist email sent by the dccc title “All hope is lost” and came to the news of Jay “Clark Kent” leaving! I knew this day would most likely come but I’m sure hatin to see him go. It’s a grueling and patience stressing job dealing with these idiots day in and day out. He’s work in news and knows the games being played. I wish him all the best. My ears will miss hearing Jay’s strong, articulate and thoughtful voice and words. I do however love me some Josh “The Voice” though so huge congratulations to him. I’ve listened and watched him cover for Jay many times and he’s great too.

Thank you to all you folks especially today helping me to see the possibilities of focusing more eyes and money on our VA. The spot light has to be turned on the law makers blocking funding over these many years. We ( dems and us regular folks and the few out there in the media who care to lead with truth need to voice all the good work this President, admin and secretary Shinseki has done. I believe history will reflect this, and I’m so happy Secretary Shinseki has been able to feel all the love and support from the administration, and in particular regular people and most importantly the veterans who attended his speech today.

I was compelled to call the phone comment line at the DCC over both the awful emails for fund raising, and the wobbly support of Shinski. I
urged that the spotlight shine on the GOP for blocking funds, and asked them to forcefully get behind and in front of funding it properly and supporting legislation to assist more med students with loans for serving with the VA and hard to service areas of the country. It was short but impassioned and felt good! I also reminded the DCC that President Obama infused the nation with positive energy and galvanized us to support and vote.

Subject-“All hope is lost” and main body:
Quick Reminder: the Kochs are beating us — BADLY.

Here’s what it means: We absolutely must reach our 100,000 donation goal for May — otherwise the Kochs’ $125 million spending spree will crush us.

Right now, we’re coming up 15,710 donations short of the goal, and the deadline is in just 24 hours. This is it. If we fail now, then you can consider all hope lost for winning a Democratic House and firing John Boehner.

We’re not willing to let that happen and just give up on President Obama’s last two years in office. Can you help us out?

I wrote my comment on the other post. (slow as I am, you all know that), however, I will say that I am so happy for Jay. I love him so much because of his hard work, and patience with the most disrespectful people in the WHPC.

However, I know how much he respects PBO and the job that POB entrusted him to do. Jay, I will miss him so much, but my missing him carries so much for you to be able to enjoy your beautiful wife and your beautiful children. The wonderful times that your family will enjoy with you will just be so awesome, I pray. You are a great father and husband, and this chapter in your life will be filled with so many blessings I pray, because you so deserve this new chapter.

Jay, take the time in those quiet moments to enjoy a little longer the smiles on your beautiful children faces across from the breakfast table and dinner table. Enjoy those moments to just hug your wife and tell her how much you love and appreciate her standing with you during this journey in your life. Have a nice time just sitting back and watching a great movie with her and laughing and sipping a great glass of wine while enjoy each others company.

Put the travelling bag way back in the closet for a while and put on a baseball cap and enjoy a game with your beautiful children. Relax, remember, and rejoice during those leisurely breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with your family.

Jay, I just gave up a prayer for you and your wife to:enjoy, explore the great other possibilities coming your way, and most of all, ust relax and get some much needed rest from the daily grind. Take a long walk through the history that you have mad, and give thanks for being one of the best who served his boss, your 44th President, Barack Obama. Jay, may God bless you and your wife and children for all that you have given us.

We release you on that day that you and your family have decided to take the next great step on your journey. Continue to be the Jay who we have grown to love, respect, and give thanks for each day your faced those sorry asses sitting in that briefing room.

However, your stepped up to the podium and did your job with grace, patience, brilliant decorum as one of our most beloved Press Secretaries of our time. Thank you for all that you did for a great son, grandson, decent human being, husband, father, and 44th President of these United States. We turn the mic off, but for sure know that we will never turn yourvoice off . Thanks for being in our lives daily, Jay. HZ

HZ, your beautiful thoughts probably summed up the reasons that Jay is leaving right now. He has two young children and the Press Secretary’s job requires constant travel and many late nights. I often see Jay in the background on the president’s international visits and I’ve thought about how hard this schedule must be on his family. The childhood years don’t last forever and I’m sure that consideration was a big part of why he’s leaving now. He will be very missed.

He would then call the parents of these dead kids and taunt them and say their kids never existed. Ann didn’t work outside the home. Was she then needle-pointing?

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The U.S. stock market finished May with the biggest monthly gain since February as the main benchmarks ended the week higher. Friday’s trading on Wall Street was lackluster as investors were cautious after disappointing reports on personal income, spending and consumer sentiment. Marginal gains on the S&P 500 helped the benchmark close at a record level for the 14th time this year. The large-cap index SPX +0.18% closed 3.44 points, or 0.2%, higher at 1,923.48. The measure added 1.2% over the past week and is 2.1% higher over the past month.

Cheer up people! Don’t let the downs keep you down long. We’ve gotta keep moving #FORWARD

We’re not scared to lose it all
    Security throw through the wall
Future dreams we have to realize
    A thousand sceptic hands
Won’t keep us from the things we plan
Unless we’re clinging to the things we prize

And do you feel scared – I do
But I won’t stop and falter
And if we threw it all away
    Things can only get better
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh, Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh

Treating today as though it was
    The last, the final show
Get to sixty and feel no regret
It may take a little time
A lonely path, an uphill climb
Success or failure will not alter it

    And do you feel
Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh, Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh.

Good afternoon all TODers…..yesterday and today were busy for me, and I have just now caught up with the past posts and the President’s statements and speeches. How wonderful to be able to come here and get what I need and want!

I listened carefully to the President’s statement on Sec. Shinseki and his answers to the three questions. Imbedded in the last person’s questions was that line about his taking full responsibility, and this problem being his fault. If you listen closely, he did not acquiesce to that premise. He stated clearly that these problems are of long standing, and that the reason they weren’t dealt with was because those problems had not come up to the top level of cognizance. He is too strong to be pushed into taking blame for a problem that did not originate in his administration. I listened carefully to that answer.

I’m hoping that now the truths of the coarse culture at some VA facilities, i.e.Phoenix can come out into the open and be dealt with. Of course Boehner is out blaming Democrats, but frankly that doesn’t seem to be working very effectively right now. He’s bloviating grasping now.

Someone mentioned calling the DCCC about their awful headlined fundraisers, so I did too. Told the woman who answered that they were depressing and discouraged people from voting, that they need to use a positive approach, suggested they look at Al Franken’s letters.
After she said thank you, I’ll pass this along, I just emphasized…..I’m not the only one who feels this way. Listen and take HEED.

This is excellent Carolyn. Really we know it’s dire but we are need not be run on fear. If people believe it’s hopeless why vote and why donate my little $5.00 in the face of such HUGE Koch and company money.

I look forward to the positive push on the much needed changes and funding for the VA too. Maybe we can flood the media mills and twitter feeds with this. Yes, let’s bring this VA bill bonehead mentioned to the floor with some new focused amendments. Would they dare to vote against it now?
