The Permanent @DCCC Freakout

“Throw in the towel!!!”

“THIS is keeping us up at night!!!”

No, these are not my reactions to the Kim and Kanye wedding. These are the subject lines of some recent emails in my inbox from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee soliciting donations. (Okay, the exclamation points were my additions, but I was just taking poetic license to make clearer the emails’ emotional fervor.)

And the bodies of the emails are no less dire:

We’re beginning to think we should just throw in the towel.

The Koch brother’s shady $125 million is beginning to show up on televisions around the country in the form of dirty, lying attack ads. If we don’t act immediately, people will believe their lies and our hopes for a Democratic House will be dead in the water.

This is horrifying:

Republicans have spent nearly HALF A BILLION DOLLARS on anti-Obamacare TV ads — and they keep piling on.

That means the Koch brothers and other Obamacare haters are officially outspending us on the Affordable Care Act 15-to-1. That’s staggering.

This isn’t just bad news for President Obama’s agenda. It’s bad for Democrats across the country who are getting targeted with these deceptive TV ads.

If we don’t hit our $90,000 goal today, then consider all hope of winning a Democratic majority in November lost.

And so on and so forth.

A successful politician and political party are predicated on a certain level of confidence. Now, you can take that too far: Mitt Romney not having prepared a concession speech for 2012 is the most glaring example. Barack Obama exudes the right level of confidence while being very cognizant of the difficulties.

But the DCCC’s emails are klaxons of despair. And they’re not attractive.

My default response to one of their emails is to delete it. They’re written in such an alarmist way that rather than scaring their recipients into action, they’re more likely to numb them into apathy. “Well, if the organization tasked with reclaiming the House is this hair-on-fire, what hope is there?”

I would respectfully argue that the DCCC is embarked on a fucking stupid, insane, and utterly counterproductive strategy.

Ahead of arguably the most important midterm election in several decades, even pop-psychology would dictate that the organization in charge of fundraising for the House Democrats should be putting out positive, nose to the grindstone messages. Yes, the task is difficult, but we can do it. That sort of thing. Something, perhaps, like this:

The Republicans are experiencing what we like to call OCS, Overconfidence Syndrome.

They thought they had these elections sewn up in January, when the Obamacare website was struggling and our polling was tanking.

Trouble is, they were a bit premature. Democrats are now polling 10 points better than they were in 2010 and Obamacare is a huge success. And here at ActBlue, we’ve seen supporters more engaged than ever before.

We have the momentum, we just need your help to keep it going.

This email, from Act Blue, is everything which the DCCC should be. It’s positive. It recognizes the obstacles. It has a can-do spirit. It doesn’t mention the millions of dollars being thrown at the election by the Kochs and their allies. It doesn’t, in essence, depress you and make you feel that the battle has already been lost. And they got my money.

Democrats have for so long run from a position of fear that its ingrained in the DNA. The DCCC does what the DCCC does because it knows how to do no other. And someone who receives one or twenty of their emails, who doesn’t follow politics all that closely but somehow wound up on their mailing list, would be forgiven if she thought all was for naught. Why give money to a group which is preparing ahead of time for defeat? No one wants to do that. I certainly don’t.

Hair on fire and OH NOEZ are a seemingly intractable condition of the Left, or at least of its leaders. President Obama is putting steel into many of them, but old habits die hard. If Democrats want to win in November, they have to stop taking reactionary positions. Get ahead of the news cycle, trumpet Democratic accomplishments and ideals, and don’t apologize. Adopt the Republican playbook, with the difference that they have truth on their side, and aren’t selling a bill of goods.

Frantic, fearful emails have never won an election. But they can certainly lose one.

    Hello all

  2. May 27, 2014 at 9:20 pm

I just got the one with “Throwing in the Towel” as the subject header and I went off. Unsubscribed from the list and gave them an earful. They do not inspire confidence nor do they promote a positive winning message. Sick of their whiny ineffectual scare tactics. DONE.

  3. May 27, 2014 at 9:22 pm

Fear serves a purpose but hope and change is what people need. Isn’t that what got PBO elected?

LL, you are making the point in a more organized and intelligent way that I have been ranting about for months.
    Americans vote for Winners.
The GOP declare themselves winners no matter what the facts may be.
    We are Actual winners.
Obamacare is what we did and are continuing to expand.
We are the can do and have done and will do effective party for the people of the USA.

You have to wonder, what are the motives of the wrong-headed DCCC?

“…Using data from the CIA Factbook, we labeled every country in the world by its highest valued export, a.k.a. the commodity that makes the country the most money in the global market. Unsurprisingly, much of the world runs on oil, particularly the Middle East and Central Asia. Europe is the world’s workshop, where most of the machinery and motor vehicles are made, from optical instruments to BMWs. Latin America brings a blend of food products and oil to the trading table. Asia is the world’s manufacturing center, where the world’s clothing, wood products, and semiconductors are made. Africa is extremely rich in natural resources, particularly precious metals and oil. A substantial part of the continent makes its money on diamonds, gold or oil…”

I just got one from Democrats 2014 “Crushing Blow”. I now just delete all these negative “The sky is Falling” pleas for money. It is a real turn off and I hope they realize, soon, that positive messages will attract more people then these FREAK OUTS!!

On point as always and so needed to shut down this freaking hysteria. I delete immediately any item from the DCCC. I wait for your posts just to heave a sigh of relief that my body and head are still attached.

Please Dems stop this insanity and realize we have a huge election before us that needs more emphasis on the GREAT things our President and party have done. Along with some rightwing savvy that spout things everyday, day after day, pointing out the do nothing party and all things OBSTRUCTED by them and make them freaking STICK!!

    Thank You, LL!

Lib_L, I really, really, really hope that you have sent this post/letter/message to the DCCC. If you haven’t yet, I’d encourage you to do so, asap. I particularly like the positive model you included and I hope that, plus the fact you clearly stated Act Blue’s approach elicited your financial response, should give the DCCC something to think about.

I took a walk over to twitter – Keep up the good work! Maybe more and more voters will join in and chairman (or whatever his title) @IsraelDCC and his staff will clue in that the return/rejected mail they are getting are not as isolated as they want to think.

It would not surprise me to find that some very high priced consultant had advised the DCCC to take this route, telling them that it was a test-proven way to get more money out of people. All of these appeals are probably consultant written. It’s not too late for the DCCC to wake up, but they will need to get their act together very soon. In the meantime, find the Democratic candidates you want to see in the US Congress and support them directly.

Decided that I should take a direct messaging approach ….

… maybe it’ll help them focus on the core problem – GREED – the insatiable lust for blood money by the gun & ammo manufacturers and dealers and their GOP + NRA enablers. It’s really that simple. A few avaricious scumbags more than willing to transform America into Somalia, or worse, just so they can make another $.

“Prior to my son being killed” – I didn’t think much about it. I didn’t do anything to support the Sandy Hook parents – until it happened to me

I don’t know who will stop the madness – but a democratic congress would be a good starting point. He has to stop blaming “both sides” or he has lost his son and nothing will change.

    • 72 amk for obama

Both sides are to blame in this. There are enough gun nutz, both in congress and the ‘base’, to thwart any sensible moves.

We must have watched a different play when PBO gave VP Biden the role of sorting this after Sandy Hook. Not sure what else could have been done – sure there are some dems who would not help but ALL in the GOP do not help. For that, I do not blame the democrats. If 75% plus of people want more gun control then there must be representatives on both sides of the aisle who represent a majority wanting gun control.

        May 27, 2014 at 10:44 pm

I thought Gabby Giffords would be a force – congress wouldn’t even support its own. Then I thought the parents of Sandy Hook would be a force.

Until powerful people on the right support those on the left who want to clean up the guns – nothing will happen. Until the NRA can no longer buy congress people nothing will happen. Until ex politicians and media pundits are called out on their support for guns, guns and more guns nothing will happen.

Any political leader who believes that the guns can be overcome – should shout long and loud and not be scared that the NRA will score them down. At the moment, media pundits who speak loud and long against the guns – get nowhere – some get fired.

It took a man who lost his family, a state in turmoil and a right wing Prime Minister to stop Australia emulating the US on guns – the latter was obviously the one who could make it happen.

Parlaying on LL’s great post………..this dingbat is supposed to be running OFA

“Mr. Messina’s defenders point out that Mr. Miliband is more liberal than his Labour predecessor Tony Blair, for whom several Clinton strategists worked. But critics counter that the David Cameron of 2014 is far more conservative than the one who campaigned in 2010. Progressives argue that Mr. Cameron has long since abandoned the moderate ground from which he once called the hard-right UK Independence Party, “fruitcakes and loonies and closet racists.” Now he is courting UKIP’s Euro-skeptic voters and once sent vans carrying “go home or face arrest” billboards to immigrant neighborhoods. And they believe Mr. Cameron’s support for economic austerity, as well as his tax cuts for the highest earners, put him in diametrical opposition to Mr. Obama.”

    I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not surprised!

For example, an analysis of seven psychological studies found that so-called “upper-class individuals” were more likely to lie in a negotiation, break traffic laws, take valued goods from others, and even cheat to increase their chances of winning a prize. Numerous studies also found that those in a higher social class were more narcissistic than poor individuals, to the point of even looking into the mirror more often. In addition, the wealthy didn’t fair well in studies about understanding the needs and feelings of others, about contributing to charity organizations, or even about taking on the risks of an entrepreneur. For decades, we’ve heard right-wing memes about welfare queens and takers, but it looks like all of that was just a diversion to keep us from figuring out that the rich are scoundrels. The one percent has tried to convince us that it’s our fault we can’t get ahead, and that it was hard work that put them at the top. Now we know that it was actually a complete lack of ethics that made them their fortunes, and that kept us from sharing in the prosperity. We need to disprove the cliché that “nice guys finish last.” Let’s take our economy back from the cheaters and the crooks.
