    Morning all.

Got a fundraising email from Act Blue. Now THIS is how a fundraising email should read.

The Republicans are experiencing what we like to call OCS, Overconfidence Syndrome.

They thought they had these elections sewn up in January, when the Obamacare website was struggling and our polling was tanking.

Trouble is, they were a bit premature. Democrats are now polling 10 points better than they were in 2010 and Obamacare is a huge success. And here at ActBlue, we’ve seen supporters more engaged than ever before.

We have the momentum, we just need your help to keep it going.

Will you chip in $10 a month, so that we have the resources to support thousands of campaigns across the country?

None of that doom and gloom crap from DCCC.

        YES, please, join twitter.

It’s a great way for the TODville community to pass along tidbits to each other.

For example, I sent an article about Tom Lehrer to @sherijr to pass along to her son, a huge Lehrer fan.

Not something everyone in TODville would be interested in, but something for a TODville son.

Helpful hint: As hard as it is, ignore RWNJ trolls who respond with despicable words against our beloved First Family. TODville (and I) think they’re paid for the number of vile tweets they send each day.

MSM are just like the GOP. When they’re in a ditch, they just keep digging.

These jerks must have gone to the “it’s all a game” school of journalism (mostly ivy league schools, no doubt).

Americans sorely miss the old school journalists who worked in foreign bureaus as cub reporters to gain a perspective on the world outside their elite cocoons.

You are correct – and this is why I always look at Coates’ pieces with some well-deserved skepticism. He always seems to feature at the core of his “excellent” pieces, a gratuitous jab at the President.

He seems to be determined to cast PBO as a modern day version of Booker T. Washington, reality be damned. He is personally invested in proving himself to be “blacker” than PBO. His racial insecurity infects his writing and clouds his perception. I am not a fan.

    • May 27, 2014 at 12:37 pm

I very nearly didn’t read his excellent reparations piece (I surrendered after 4 days of reading how excellent it was) because I’m sick and tired of this constant disrespect of our POTUS. I’m not going there anymore with any of these people.

You know, many of those who deny evolution have total faith in the science of medicine. Current medicine is, to a great degree, based upon evolution. How many people would suddenly stop seeing their doctors if their doctors pointed out to them that so many treatments have developed based upon a study and understanding of evolution?

On the same page as you, as usual.

I posted a lengthy comment on the overnight thread (I think it was the last comment on that thread) that I will repost tonight.

Included was this tweet, for Japa21:

This video by @SolarRoadways’ Scott Brusaw has been up a week, and has over 5 million views.

It’s a bit too corny for my taste, but I love the idea of burying Koch Industries with an explosion of solar construction. The video says that if every road in the US were converted to #SolarRoadways, we’d generate three times as much energy than we currently consume. Plus, no more shoveling snow, and no more ice-storm created power line hazards.

      From Wikipedia:
FHWA’s [Federal Highway Administration’s] role in the Federal-aid Highway Program is to oversee federal funds used for constructing and maintaining the National Highway System (primarily Interstate Highways, U.S. Routes and most State Routes). This funding mostly comes from the federal gasoline tax and mostly goes to state departments of transportation FHWA oversees projects using these funds to ensure that federal requirements for project eligibility, contract administration and construction standards are adhered to.

I heard on one of the progressive radio shows a caller called in to either Stephanie Miller or Randi’s show before she left. This guy was a veteran. He said as a veteran registered with the VA, he received a letter in the mail with Gen’l Shinseki’s signature, probably a form letter sent out to all registered vets that they do not have to wait to be seen at a VA hospital in emergencies. They can go to any hospital and be seen and the VA will reimburse the hospital. The guy was very specific that you had to be registered with the VA hospital. Does anyone know anything about this? Has any veterans on TOD received such letter?

      • 62 57andfemale
        May 27, 2014 at 5:10 pm

I heard the same call. Of course, registering with the VA is part of the problem.

But here’s the thing: PBO, to his great credit, has opened the system to past veterans – like Agent Orange victims from Vietnam – without the usual red tape. So not only do we have the (unfunded) veterans from Bush’s unnecessary wars, but PBO has been righting decades-long wrongs for past veterans. And with all these new vets coming into the system, this administration has still cut the backlog IN HALF. THAT is a HUGE success that is NEVER told by the RW complicit media.

I know that the VA needed that last bill passed in order to implement a great many of these changes, including the reimbursement function if you go to your own doctor. The bill filibustered by McCain, McConnell, Graham and the rest of the heartless traitors. Changing a bureaucracy to pay bills from other hospitals takes commitment. Instead, not only are the GOP grandstanding, but a bunch of complicit Dems are jumping on the RW bandwagon.

Thank you 57 for confirming what you heard and what is going on. The media won’t tell these stories and a lot of veterans who served but are not registered because of the red tape and are insured through their jobs don’t know this. My friend served in Vietnam and when he returned he lost about 30% of his hearing. He had so much red tape trying to get compensation for this and they make you jump through hoops. I read not too long ago where a Vietnam vet fought the VA for 30 yrs and it was not until PBO he got disability for agent orange. He lost everything but would not give up. He lost his wife, family, jobs, this is such a shame our vets have to lose everything in order to get what they deserve.

SCOTUS halts FL’s ability to executed mentally incapacitated. 5-4.

This is the stuff that Kennedy is good on. I LOATHE when he is labeled the ‘swing vote’ as if he’s moderate. He’s great on justice issues like this, and marriage equality rights, etc. But he is as loathsome as the other four on everything else.

Anyone who can sleep at night after torturing the law and the Constitution to give Bush the election, as if elections were ‘contracts’, is a full-blown sociopath. Yes, I’m glad he’ll think twice before executing a kid or someone mentally incapacitated, but he has no problem denying health care to millions of Americans, or making voting a privilege for the rich. He has no trouble selling our democracy to the highest bidder.

So yippee on this one, Justice Kennedy. But you’re a sociopath on everything else.

For Black Kids in America, a Degree Is No Guarantee

A new study shows that African-American college graduates face unemployment rates nearly twice as high as others with the same education.

    Janell RossMay 27 2014, 12:24 PM ET

The Ivy-League-educated barista who can’t find a job that pays enough to live anywhere besides her childhood bedroom. The freshly minted MBA and law-school graduates strapped with debt and frustrated about the six-figure jobs and master-of-the-universe titles that haven’t materialized.

Nearly five years after the Great Recession officially ended, the struggles and dampened expectations of young college graduates have become a fixture of American politics and even popular culture. But amid all the focus on the difficulties of college-educated millennials, one facet of this upheaval has remained largely unexplored: the continued significance of race.

As a new crop of college graduates joins the American workforce, unemployment rates among minorities with degrees remain distinctly elevated and their economic prospects disproportionately dimmed, a new report released by the Center for Economic and Policy Research has found.

In 2013, the most recent period for which unemployment data are available by both race and educational attainment, 12.4 percent of black college graduates between the ages of 22 and 27 were unemployed. For all college graduates in the same age range, the unemployment rate stood at just 5.6 percent. The figures point to an ugly truth: Black college graduates are more than twice as likely to be unemployed.

    • May 27, 2014 at 1:13 pm

just so we don’t get the ‘ but they majored in the wrong thing’:

In fact, the center’s study found that even black students who majored in high-demand fields such as engineering fare only slightly better than those who spent their college years earning liberal arts degrees. Between 2010 and 2012, 10 percent of black college graduates with engineering degrees and 11 percent of those with math and computer-related degrees were unemployed, compared with 6 percent of all engineering graduates and 7 percent of all those who focused their studies on math and computers.

College-educated blacks are also more likely than all others with degrees to confront underemployment, which the study defined as working in jobs that don’t require a four-year degree. The proportion of young African-American college graduates who are underemployed has spiked since 2007 by fully 10 percentage points to a striking 56 percent. During that same period, underemployment among all recent college graduates has edged up only slightly to around 45 percent.

There were lots of details about hospitals not accepting it etc. it really seemed to be one sided. I listened closely to see where they lived and think it was Texas. I hope someone digs into it quickly to refute it as almost all have been. I was surprised to hear it on NPR since it was so one sided. I fear being on NPR may give it legitimacy.

HEADLINE: Business That Bashed Obama’s OSHA Just Had Horrifying Industrial Accident

// WASHINGTON — During the 2012 presidential campaign, Wisconsin businessman Lance Johnson said President Barack Obama’s workplace safety inspectors were burdening him and killing jobs with too much red tape. “I’ve never been audited by more government agencies in my life than I have under Obama,” Johnson, president of Johnson Brass & Machine Foundry Inc., in Saukville, Wisconsin, told The Wall Street Journal in a Nov. 2, 2012, campaign story. On Monday, Johnson’s foundry was the site of a horrifying industrial accident. …

…Speaking to the Journal in 2012, Johnson claimed that OSHA, which is tasked with monitoring the health and safety of workplaces, was subjecting him to duplicative audits. The story detailed how most of the U.S. business community was throwing its weight behind GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney rather than Obama, in part because of the incumbent president’s “aggressive regulators.”

…Through a spokesman, The Huffington Post asked Johnson if he still believed OSHA regulation was too burdensome. He had no immediate response. //

“Martinez is a criminal defense lawyer and Christopher’s mother, Caryn Johnson Michaels, is a deputy district attorney in San Luis Obispo.
Martinez said his training and that of Christopher’s mother explains, in part, why he has not retreated as most parents do immediately after such a tragedy. “We are tough people,” he said. “Caryn was in charge of the sex crime unit. We fight.”

Martinez said he is consulting with experts to help develop a clear message and a specific course of action that the public can undertake with the aim of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

“There’s no playbook for this. We don’t know what we are doing,” he said. “I just know I have to keep fighting until something changes. The most precious thing in the world has been taken from me. What else can I do?”

Nospin, the more people start fighting back like the outraged moms, Gabby Gifford and Mark Kelly and even the venerable Brady group, the better chance we have of breaking through. Congress people have to be hit where it hurts the most–at the ballot box. They have to fear “we the people” more than they do the NRA.

      • 95 HZ
        May 27, 2014 at 3:31 pm

Maybe we can encourage Mr. Martinez and his wife(who are both lawyers, according to press) to meet their senators, both Boxer and Feinstein. Maybe they can work together to move this to a better place. Maybe Mr. Martinez could meet and rally enough needed and dedicated people to confront the NRA in a way that others have not been able to do. I ask for grace to be granted to Mr. Martinez and Ms. Michaels, Chistopher’s mother to do what is lovely meaning in honoring the memory of their precious son.

Hopefully, his acceptance of a call from those he mentioned in the article who might reach out to call him; he will be in a delicate but calm and open space so that he can be an open vessel to welcome the call. I pray that he ponders on the good that may come out of this sacred opportunity to remember his beloved son in a way of helping others so that just maybe, this type of horrific action will not take the lives and dreams of others like his son had for his law career.

I will pray that the pain that Mr. Martinez and Ms. Michaels will be gently remove each moment and that both will be able to heal and be comforted in each day going forth as they lay their son to rest. This has to be so painful; but may they grow little by little by collective goodness of comfort to do some good in loving memory of their son.

I just pray for peace, comforting words, wisdom of a loving and peaceful resolution for them to mourn and be comforted; but that they will also be given strength to take one step at a time and move gracefully into their spaces. May we keep all of the wounded and deceased in our prayers and loving space.

And may we pray that others will rise up and stand in our spaces with open prayers and meditations that hearts on both sides will be turned to the goals of helping us get a congress in 2014 to help our president to do what he has and is always doing within his power to help with the gun policies in our nation for all of us. Good Morning/Evening to my Chips and my TOD family. Thank you Chips for this beautiful space. I was so delighted listening to the president live with the brilliant young people at the WH Science Fair. What a joy again to see great minds come out and share their brilliant minds with the world.

I love our president so much. He really enjoys this event so much. Seeing all of these young beautiful displaying their love of science is so remarkable. I love it when our young people are at the center of moving on with the things that will help make this a better nation and the world a better place for many generations to come. Congratulations to all of the participants and the so many more who are still working hard to make a positive difference.

As to the rude reporter, I thought that President Obama was so on point when he made his remark to her. He was not pleased at all with her approach. It was rude to the young man who had just finished his presentation with the president, and it was disrespectful to the president in all forms. I appreciate our TOD family taking to Twitter to express this to this woman. Thank you all.

I do hope that the young man will remember his presentation to the President and not this incident. That is my prayer for him, and you all do not want to hear my request for her. I will be nice today.

I am so proud of all of the hard work of Sec. Duncan and his team; the great parents, teachers, mentors, scientists, and the communities that continue to lift up these beautiful and bright young people. That is the story of this event today. I can think of a hundred questions she could have asked if she wanted to engage the President. These people will Never learn who they are dealing with in this WH. However, they better learn real fast because POB will not allow them to take over his presidency; and especially when it involves his young people of this nation. He focus on what is the goodness within the nation to make it work beautifully for all. He has No tolerance for the gossip, small minded rudeness of these fools. They will hopefully learn.HZ

What a blow this loss of tourism must be for the Crimean economy. Those businesses that rely on the influx of summer people are going to lose everything they have. Russia was supposed to be their savior, making things easier for them. What a mess!

Where are the “Russians” who can cross over from the Russia side or by the ocean? The truth is NO ONE wants to go there because it was taken over illegally…..the truth hurts and they know it.

    The Hundred Million

    By Ed Kilgore

When you read about Florida’s governor’s race, it often seems there are three candidates. There’s incumbent governor and Republican nominee Rick (Very Scary) Scott. There’s former governor and party-switcher Charlie Crist. And then there’s The Hundred Million, the amount Scott is pledging to spend to beat Crist into submission. In one sense, this third candidate has been an important ally for Crist, insofar as it has chased off major Democratic competition, as suggested in an overview of the race by the Miami Herald’s Marc Caputo and Steve Bousquet:

“I called him a long time ago and said, ‘You’re the only one who’s capable of not being defeated by $100 million,’ ” said Dan Gelber, a former Miami Beach legislator and one of Crist’s closest advisers. “He has such a strong identity with voters that he can resist a paid media campaign.”
