GM TOD. Thanks for next weeks schedule Chips!

….Yet another massacre occurred last night at an institution of learning, this time the University of California, Santa Barbara. The price we paid for the National Rifle Association’s “freedom” was seven people murdered and seven injured at nine different crime scenes. A young man who Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown called “severely mentally disturbed” drove by various student hangouts to commit an act of “premeditated mass murder” apparently—according to videos posted to YouTube and threats made to women on campus—due to his anger at being “rejected” by women on campus.

Of course, this is all too familiar: a young aggrieved male, mentally disturbed, threatening others—especially women—but still able to get his hands on a high-capacity magazine of the variety used in so many other mass murders. This doesn’t happen in any other high income country with the regularity it does here; in fact, it almost never happens in any of them.

But here, in the good ole US of A, we’ve allowed a group of rich, entitled thugs who run an operation fronting for arms dealers—guys who represent a minority position on pretty much every issue having to do with reasonable regulation of firearms even among gun owners—to dictate our policies to cowardly, careerist politicians……

Oh wow, so many former friends (I assume they were?) falling out after discussion on CA murders:

      May 25, 2014 at 11:47 am

Wow. Hyperbolic much? Women were talking about how they constantly have to watch their drinks when they’re in a bar or pub, how they have to give fake phone numbers, say they have boyfriends (even if they don’t), wear rings on their ring finger, so that they don’t anger some abusive scumbag who won’t take no for an answer.

You’re out in public and you’re working on the assumption that people you come in contact with have all their mental, behavioral, and social faculties in place but you never can tell. A very nice person could become a sociopath in the blink of an eye just because you don’t want to give him your phone number. Women are forced to take precautions.

That discussion was taking place and YeaYouRite tweeted in response, that women not giving their phone numbers to genuinely nice men are mean people and blah..blah…blah. AngryBlackLady pointed out that, that is not so. “Genuinely nice men” are abusers, rape women, and kill people. The police said the USCB murderer was a polite, nice man when they met him. Yet he went on a shooting rampage because he felt women were entitled to spread their legs for him and treat him like a King.

YeaYouRite was trying to as they say, “mansplain” and ABL didn’t sic any trolls on him. He tweeted and women and men alike responded, telling him he was perpetuating a wrong theory. Then he got frustrated and as they say, the shit hit the fan.

      • May 25, 2014 at 11:58 am

I was amazed by his tweets Nerdy, I always had a lot of time for him, but to bring up the wrong number thing in the context of these murders was extraordinary. It’s something I’d expect from a woman-hating right winger. Completely flabbergasted.

Belinda Padilla does not pick up unknown calls anymore, not since someone posted her cellphone number on an online forum for gun enthusiasts. A few fuming-mad voice mail messages and heavy breathers were all it took. Then someone snapped pictures of the address where she has a P.O. box and put those online, too. In a crude, cartoonish scrawl, this person drew an arrow to the blurred image of a woman passing through the photo frame. “Belinda?” the person wrote. “Is that you?” Her offense? Trying to market and sell a new .22-caliber handgun that uses a radio frequency-enabled stopwatch to identify the authorized user so no one else can fire it……

Omer Kiyani’s hands still shake when he remembers the day that changed the course of his life. He was 16 years old, riding in a car with a group of friends, when someone started firing a gun outside the car. Kiyani — who never identified the shooter and has trouble remembering the incident — was shot in the mouth. After several surgeries, his physical problems faded away, but the shooting left an indelible impression on his psyche.

Yes, he believes in making guns safer, but he’s not your typical safety advocate. He’s a gun owner himself, and he wants to control firearms in the most practical of ways. That’s why he founded Sentinl, a Detroit-based startup that’s designing a biometric gun lock called Identilock. Attaching to a gun’s trigger, it unlocks only when the owner applies a fingerprint. Now that he’s a father, Kiyani says, he’s even more motivated to keep guns out of the wrong hands and prevent his kids from having to go through the trauma he experienced. “I understand what can happen when you’re on the wrong side of a firearm,” he explains.

    Don’t Call it ObamaCare

    by BooMan
Sun May 25th, 2014 at 11:03:33 AM EST

It’s depressing that so many red state citizens tell pollsters that they oppose ObamaCare even as they report liking their state’s health exchanges. I suppose, however, that this is an area ripe for investigation by social scientists. They can discover exactly what the effect of the Republicans’ disinformation effort is on the populace by comparing those who oppose ObamaCare to those who support what ObamaCare actually does. It has long been noticed that most of the individual components of ObamaCare poll significantly better than the law as a whole, but this phenomenon of people liking ObamaCare unless you call it ObamaCare is somewhat new. It’s not quite the same as the deranged tendency of Tea Partiers to ask the government to keep its paws off their Medicare, but it’s similar in kind.

      May 25, 2014 at 12:11 pm

It really isn’t all that complicated as to the reasons why red state voters don’t like Obama, but love Obamacare, but only if it isn’t called Obamacare. It only highlights their stupidity and hypocrisy, which if you look at it, it is a sight to behold. I wish they wouldn’t accept Obamacare, I wish they would go back to buying their shitty policies that virtually left them bankrupt if they got a sick. I wouldn’t waste an ounce of energy trying to get these motherfuckers to understand what Obama did for them. I feel the same way when it comes to the midterms, if red state voters want to vote against their own best interest, I say let them. If you’re too stupid to accept a helping hand, well then you deserve every goddamn thing that happens to you.

      Good Morning TOD Family!

I was pretty much speechless yesterday afternoon and all through the night. I cannot fathom how we are supposed to cope with tragedy after tragedy after tragedy, an endless cycle of horrific violence in every sector of our communities. I feel nauseated by the power the NRA has over our Congress and the way they cater to worst arrogant misfits in our society.

Take heart, meta. I think this is all part of the wearing down of America…the part where the NRA/ Koch Bros/ Heritage…etc all want us to throw up our hands and resign ourselves to a life of servitude and oppression. Not gonna happen. Rise Up. Dust Off. Get mad and get voting!! Expose them all for what they are…greedy, money grubbing, selfish SOB’s.

We are NEVER going back!! Have to work even HARDER to give him a congress to work with!

My thought with this VA issue is that we can’t expect that with the ending of 2 wars and all the needs to these war vets, coupled with the one’s from past wars and service…to be adequate. This has obviously posed a huge strain on a system that was already strained! Veterans love the VA healthcare they get…for the most part, and they earned this. I say that we EXPAND THE VA healthcare system! This is about access to care…we need More doctors, nurses, PA’s, therapists etc! Add buildings to the existing ones and build new facilities where there are none now. Think about all the jobs and necessary and timely care this would bring. My 2 cents.

On Memorial Day Eve, President Obama Lands In Afghanistan

    by Eyder Peralta
    May 25, 201412:02 PM ET

Under the cover of darkness, President Obama landed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan for a rally with U.S. troops.

According to a pool report, Obama is expected to get an on-site briefing from his military commanders and visit wounded servicemen on the base.

    The pool report continues:

“The centerpiece of the trip is a rally with some of the 32,000 Americans who are currently serving in Afghanistan—a war the president is committed to winding down by year’s end. A performance by country music star Brad Paisley, who traveled with the president, will set the tone for the event, expected to be long on thanks for the troops and short on foreign policy pronouncements.

Yes. That could be true for the Media is sworn to secrecy. They are allowed to get things ready…..those to travel with the POTUS, but never told where until close to landing and they are forbidden to text or phone out the information for security reasons. If any news media violates this, I believe they will Never be included in presidential security travels again.

          May 25, 2014 at 12:24 pm

Yes, that is true. On one trip certain media members were told one hour in advance to be at andrews airforce base before wheels up, they weren’t even told where they were going.

“One of the first ‘scandals’ that beset Kyiv after the dust had settled from the departure of Viktor Yanukovych was with regard to what has widely been called a ‘ban on the Russian language.’ Opinions on this supposed ‘ban’ have been many and loud, but most of the people who have raised the language issue not only are not legal specialists, they have not even read the actual laws involved.”

Also traveling with the president are NSA Susan Rice, advisers John Podesta — whose son is currently serving in Afghanistan, Dan Pfeiffer, Ben Rhodes, and country music star Brad Paisley, who will perform for troops during the visit.
