Chat On

On This Day – Pete Souza: “Thelma Maxine Pippen McNair, mother of Denise McNair, whispers to the President after he signed H.R. 360, which provided for the presentation of a congressional gold medal to commemorate the lives of the four young African American victims of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, in September 1963. McNair’s daughter was one of the victims.” May 24, 2013

According to the study, which used 22 password criteria to judge 80 top websites, more than 86% received a “subpar”score of below +50, the study’s minimum requirement for password security. Of the sites surveyed, Match.com, Hulu, Overstock, Fab, and Amazon posted the lowest scores for allowing users to accept weak and generic passwords. Apple (the only company to receive a perfect score), Microsoft, UPS, Target, GoDaddy, and Yahoo Mail were among the highest for including on-screen password strength, disallowing generic passwords, and requiring long, alphanumeric phrases.

Hi VC! I haven’t been in all day either. Remember I told you I was deleting old emails that had piled up? I’m only about half through. I had a nightmare that night about deleting weird stuff on my DVR and I didn’t go back for a day or two. O_o What face do you have, I don’t recognize it?

      • 17 vcprezofan2
        May 24, 2014 at 6:40 pm

Hello CarolMae! I see you’ve set yourself a real task deleting old emails. This reminds me of the time the IT department at an old job had to contact me to clean out my emails. 😀 The manager had the bad habit, IMO of sending out weekly ‘newsletters’ and my immediate supervisor did EVERYTHING via emails (even if she just passed you in the corridor). Me, I never signed on unless reminded; why bother when I could see everyone I needed to see by walking across the hall or around the corner?

BTW, I have my regular face; I don’t believe in face changes lifts.

        • May 24, 2014 at 6:53 pm

No facelift, no Botox, it looks like you have a yellow half face in your post. 😉 I like this one because of my lopsided vision. O_o I’m little lax in deleting emails. I almost never have time to read them when I get them so I leave them. I’m unsubscribing some too. It just takes time. I’m a hoarder.
It is thundering and the lightening is crackly so loud my dogs and I are shivering. Hubby’s on his way home from fishing. He called just as I got your message. I hope we don’t lose power. It’s raining so that’s good. 💥

“Your neighborhood quadcopter probably doesn’t have the ability to launch Hellfire missiles, but just saying the word “drone” conjures up images of flying, buzzing death. But what about drones’ potential for saving lives?

We’ve seen how drones can be a crucial asset to search and rescue operations, but Iran’s RTS Lab has taken an entirely new angle. RTS’s Pars drone carries a payload of life preservers that can be delivered to a drowning swimmer far faster than a lifeguard. As we saw in testing in the Caspian Sea, the drone can also work at night, using bright lights, thermal sensors, and a built-in camera to stream video to rescuers on shore.

The concept works well, and it’s an excellent example of how powerful drones—which are cheaper and easier to use than just about any other aerial delivery vehicle—can actually be. Here in the US, where the FAA remains steadfast in its desire to squelch the nascent commercial drone industry, this Iranian drone built of Chinese parts sets an example of what can be done when we set our eyes to the skies to do good”

I like the sound of that, LPlains. So much could be accomplished if mankind sets its creative mind to do good.

      • May 24, 2014 at 9:46 pm

What if some sets their mind to creating a website promoting a small business they have been contemplating for eons? Asking for a friend 🙂

        • 47 vcprezofan2
          May 24, 2014 at 9:55 pm

Tell your friend there is a difference between a creative mind at work on something like a lifesaving drone, and an average mind vaguely contemplating the creation of a business website. Also, let your friend know that contemplation is easy-peasy and requires very little actual effort.

          • May 24, 2014 at 11:05 pm

You’re right……I will tell my friend they are the worst procrastinator in the world, and they always have some variable of a “straw man” justifying their inaction. I will also remind my friend how they are selling themselves short on the easy-peasy work they have already been doing which has put them in a position to to further succeed.

This is incredible. Thank you, LP, for sharing what these Iranian students did in programming drones to help save lives by using them to help rescue people from drowning in the Caspian Sea.

FLASHBACK: Mainstream Media Largely Ignored GOP’s Obstruction Of Veterans Health Bill

While mainstream media coverage of the serious allegations of improper practices at certain Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health clinics has been extensive in recent weeks, a bill to expand health care for veterans that was blocked by Senate Republicans in February received little attention.

    GM from my world

My take on a few of the day’s events

    1. Until PBO was elected, I had no idea as to the dog whistles used every day by so many people against those who do not have lily white skin. I took the remarks/statements at face value – silly me – I apologize for my ignorance, it should not have been. The first police report on the murders today included a remark that “the person who did this has serious mental health issues” and my initial thought – “this is a white man”

If a white man is a mass murderer – he has mental health issues – anyone else is a terrorist or a murdering thug.

    2. I wonder if PBO has named his golf balls for members of congress and/or the WHPC. I like to think of him getting rid of the horrors of these people by whacking them around a golf course.

    3. I see Donna has the grandbabes visiting today – I only have half as many as Donna – but she is also visiting. Grandbabes make the world a better place 🙂

    • May 24, 2014 at 7:25 pm

“The first police report on the murders today included a remark that “the person who did this has serious mental health issues” and my initial thought – “this is a white man” …. oh, exactly 99ts, it’s simply extraordinary how that is always the line when the killer is a white man.

As for the golf balls ….. 😆

VA Scandal Bolsters Case for Socialized Medicine

A Few Things to Keep In Mind About the V.A.

    By Paul Waldman

The problem around which this scandal revolves is how long vets have to wait to see a doctor, not what happens once they get there. This is an important distinction to make, because there are going to be conservatives saying, “See? Socialized medicine doesn’t work!” And it’s true that the V.A. is indeed socialized medicine, much like what you have in Britain—veterans are insured by the government and get care at government-run facilities with medical professionals who are government employees. But what we’re talking about now, in terms of the scandal, isn’t so much socialized medicine, or really medicine at all, it’s the agency’s difficulties in moving vets through the system.

Always looking for something to blame other than the gun. Who would think that the GOP apologists would blame it all on women – it’s not that they attack women all the time – or legislate against them – or all that stuff.

As much as John Howard is a RW tool – I will always thank him for listening to the victim’s families and enacting very strong laws on gun ownership. It was never in doubt after the Port Arthur massacre. (Young white male with “issues”).

What would “bring down the empire” that is America is so ludicrous, isn’t it? But not so different from other civilizations, brought down by hatred, bigotry, racism, tribalism (I’ve left out many -isms, of course), religiosity, apathy, ignorance, and – the big overarching one – GREED. And if we don’t stop it in 2014, I truly believe we won’t stop it. This is a critical time for our country, and everybody’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. If all self-proclaimed Democrats and liberals and “independents” voted out Republicans and “conservatives” and teapartiers, we might be able to stem the tide.

I think I just made myself depressed.

When this father called out the politicians and the NRA, my mind went immediately to the image of ML, Mitch McConnell walking out on the stage with that long rifle and having the nerves also to seem to be so proud of holding it high and smiling. That is so shameful and painful. Then seeing the photo of the men sitting at that eating place with their guns, and having that smirk look on their faces; It all just makes me sick to my gut.

We have to encourages as many people as we can to come out this Nov., 2014 and get the scumbags out of congress. We have to. We must. HZ

“Despite all this, I will never let anyone speak disparagingly about Ukraine’s army! About those people who, knowing how things really are, despite the wails of their wives and tears of their mothers, despite the fear, in spite of everything, have gone to fight! Have gone to protect all of us! Have gone to protect their homeland!

We have a very tough opponent: a crazed symbiosis of Russian professionals and Donbas ghouls. Some of our people are happily pushing a knife into the backs of our sleeping soldiers!

To my greatest regret, further casualties are inevitable and there will be many. But we will surely win! Because, in the end, victory is not just because of the weapon, but because of the man! Glory to Ukraine! Death to our enemies! Glory to our army!”
