so true, also those who died in those embassy bombings under Pres Bush. Think how the country handles the Beirut bombings. A co-worker lost he r Marine son in that explosion. I personally knew that young man. There was not all this 17+ committee meetings. They did not excoriate then Pres Reagan. We as Americans need to remember, not rip each other up.

Oil spill on streets of Los Angeles.

An oil pipe in Los Angeles spilled an estimated 10,000 gallons (38,000 litres) of oil in the streets, the LA Fire Department (LAFD) says.

A geyser shot crude oil 20 feet into the air, and over an area half a mile (0.8km) in length, the LAFD added in a statement.

The oil line was remotely shut off, and by 0600 local time (1400 BST) most of the oil had been vacuumed.

Not a good week for CA.

Big Oil. Mofos. It just goes from bad to worse, how many wake up calls does it take before we’re all overcome with toxins? Vacuumed up, that would be a nasty job. Where do they dump it after?

So there was a change in the program…..from Bridge Over Trouble Waters to Amazing Grace?

No wonder Christie had his wife as a prop for COVER? 😉

The service’s original program Thursday morning had New Jersey Governor Chris Christie followed by a rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Idina “Adele Dazeem” Menzel. That might have been a bit awkward on account of certain footnotes.

Menzel backed out at the last moment due to illness and was replaced by Broadway singer and 9/11 widow LaChanze, who fairly knocked “Amazing Grace” out of the park. A museum spokesperson said the change had nothing to do with Christie.

    • 42 Judith Fardig
      May 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm

Too bad Idina had to cancel and the original song choice wasn’t sung by LaChanze. They are both beautiful songs, but Christie deserved to have to listen to Simon & Garfunkel’s.

President Obama really is our spiritual leader in times of sorrow. Has any other President had to speak at public memorials so often?

The 1st Family left early for they were concerned about the SService details……. and at times possible ‘inconveniences’ the security detail can impose when not intended. The POTUS being mindful that the dedication of the 9/11 was for the families to attend…..left early to allow for more attendants to participate fully.

Chris Hayes is everything wrong with the American left. He does have potential and a brain (if he chose to use it), but that, too, explains the malaise of the American whiny left.

He sits in his safe berth that he has held his entire, privileged life, and does damage to anything that could rebuild this country with progressive ideals. He’s a menace. And he’s the only type that gets TV shows. You have to prove you’re ‘independent’ by bashing the messy process that real progressives are engaged in

            Perfecly stated Meta.
Every show, even the best most pro-POTUS one, Politics Nation, expresses the days news through a GOP lens. First item on yesterdays show was Rove/Hillary. Second item was POTUS on infra-structure.
Contest and order of presentation matter.

Last week I said that venue matters.

The entire medium and how news is packaged is the message we get.
So Reverand Al who is a whole-hearted supporter of our President still sent a subtle message that malicious Rove gossip is a more important item than the President of the US celebrating an accomplishment like a bridge rebuilding. A bridge rebuilding that will benefit the larger community with jobs and more efficient and safe commutation.

TOD is the best news source. We get how monumentally important our President and his work is.

It’s a waste of the precious little ‘progressive’ air time that we have, unfortunately. But of course, that’s by design of the corporations in control of the air waves.

Thanks again, Bill Clinton, for the Telecom Act of 1996. The only time the Clintons are progressive is when they’re campaigning.

I don’t care about his personal life – but I sure would love to hear Clinton apologize for the damage he’s left for PBO to either clean up or have to deal with.

I was watching what could have been a good discussion yesterday – but turned off – because as usual – he spoke loudly & too fast – interrupted his guests – told them what they should be saying & definitely was not listening to them. So even when he has a good discussion topic & worthwhile guests – he still gets it wrong.

I remember the weekend before the ACA SCOTUS decision was announced. Hayes did a panel on health care in America and yes – it was excellent. Sober, intelligent, factual. And I asked myself – why now? Why did you do everything you could to jettison this law, when you could have been informative and helpful?

    Happy Birthday Dakota!

I’ve just watched the C-span video of this morning’s event. I could not watch more after POTUS speech. Too emotional; too painful. I definitely skipped Mr. Grand Stand Bully Governor Bridgegate’s remarks. The whole thing reminds me of where I was that morning, and how I emerged two and a half hours later covered in ashes. Very painful.

But if anyone finds comfort visiting that museum, more power to him/her. I don’t think I can nor will I.

Indiana governor and potential 2016 presidential candidate Mike Pence (R) embraced a key portion of the Affordable Care Act on Thursday, becoming the ninth Republican governor to support expanding health coverage to residents below 138 percent of the federal poverty line and accept millions in funding from the health care law. GOP governors in three other states — Pennsylvania, Utah, and Florida — have also indicated a willingness to work with the federal government to cover the low-income population.

Pence’s announcement also comes as national Republicans have shifted their focus from repealing Obamacare to investigating the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya and have struggled to craft a united message on repealing the health care law since the end of the first open enrollment period.

This, GOP, is what you call a ‘smoking gun’. I hate to celebrate until we’re absolutely sure, but this is pretty, pretty damning, if you ask me.

    • 116 57andfemale
      May 15, 2014 at 2:30 pm

Well, it’s less explosive than the headlines and tweet insinuate on further reading; but if not a full-blown fire, there is some ‘smoke’ here.

It should be hilarious to watch Republicans parse this (“what did he know and when did he know it”) and square their defense of Christie when they are damn well trying to impeach PBO for not knowing (before the CIA or anybody else knew) that Benghazi (and, what, 20 other uprisings that day?) wasn’t caused by the video.

What there isn’t, unfortunately, is evidence tying Christie or close staff members to the actual lane closures at that time. And with the help of a complicit media, he could get past this. Not to the WH, for certainly his bullying is no longer seen as attractive. But unless he can be tied to this blatant misuse of power for political revenge, he may remain standing.

      • May 15, 2014 at 2:46 pm

57, Agree, but I think he’s in far graver trouble for his extortion regarding Hurricane Sandy funding …. we’ll see ….

        • 118 57andfemale
          May 15, 2014 at 2:51 pm

and I just re-read the breakdown on dKos and it’s a little clearer (I’ve read some variation of this report three times now). Stepian does say that members of Christie’s senior staff had knowledge, but he says there’s ‘proof’ in that report that came out. It’s that ‘proof’ that is weak. But apparently Stepian (or at least his lawyer) is saying that senior staff knew.

          The web is tightening, however.

        • 119 57andfemale
          May 15, 2014 at 2:53 pm

The Hurricane Sandy funding is despicable, and it points to the ongoing narrative of his vicious, extortionist ways. The way he blew the pension funds is an inside politics story, but it all contributes to the fact that he is nothing but a vindictive bully who has no concern for his constituents.

Had posted Prof. Synder’s extensive analysis a couple days ago. Yesterday, he opened the ‘Ukraine: Thinking Together’ conference …

“Snyder suggested that since the beginning of the EuroMaidan Revolution in November 2013, Russia has deliberately worked to undermine Ukraine’s European trajectory. Although Ukrainians have largely seen the EU in a positive light since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Snyder argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been working to change this perception by constructing a counter, transnational project: the Eurasian Union.

“The European Union is being coded as an enemy, as decadent,” said Snyder, suggesting that “The Eurasian Union exists only in opposition to the European Union.”

He posited that Ukraine will soon be forced to choose between Putin’s Eurasian Union and the EU, saying that a return to the 19th century geopolitical model of nation states is “impossible” because modern economies, politics, and cultures are too interconnected. Staying alone, between the two regional powers, Snyder argued, is a “fantasy.”

When asked about Ukraine’s non-Western past, Snyder concluded that although Ukraine has multiple histories – European, Turkish, and Slavic – it is now in the position to choose which future it wants.”

    The picture arrived

Some of you may remember that I was lucky enough to meet PBO last Thursday at the Fairmont during a DNC fundraiser. the truly amazing news was that I was getting able to get a photo with PBO.

I had convinced myself that the photographer would loose my photo or that I would look awful.

Well it arrived yesterday, and after using Photoshop to whiten my teeth, reduce crows feet and improve my tan it is now up on the web.

I wanted to also share photos of my teammates Alix, and Sonia

I also wanted to share what I can remember of our conversation.

Assistant says your name and pushes you toward the President

    President “Hello Linda”

Me : Hello Mr. President it is an honor to meet you. I am the Chapter Lead for Sonoma Counties OFA team.

President: Thats a beautiful place to be leading a team.

Me : I wanted to tell you that I think you are the finest President of my lifetime and it is an honor to be working with you.

President: Aw I gotta give you a hug (hugging ensues) I really appreciate all you do.

Me: I am very grateful to be part of OFA

President: I am grateful for all you do.

We turn to camera, picture is taken.

    Woman drags me away.

After I could not even remember looking at the camera – but I guess I did. The entire process was probably less than a minute. Most exciting minute of my life (to date).

Finally a picture of the President pointing at YOU.

He’s telling you to join the red to blue team that is working across the country to elect Dems to Congress. If you can’t find a team near you send me a note and you can work with my team until one comes to your area. If you have 2 hours a week and a phone, you can do this.

I think you would be very poised and articulate, then you would walk into another room and pass out. It helped that I practiced what I was going to say for a few days. Plus he was holding me up.

“Washington, DC – Nevada Senator Harry Reid spoke on the Senate floor today on the need for a constitutional amendment to curb unlimited campaign spending and the Koch brothers’ financing of shadowy political organizations. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

A memo from the Koch-funded political organization, Americans for Prosperity, found its way into the national press last week. The memo details Americans for Prosperity’s plan to spend at least $125 million ensuring the Koch brothers’ hand-picked candidates win elections this November. The memo was sent to a select group – the ultra-radical, mega-rich men and women who fund Americans for Prosperity. The memo was titled: “Confidential Investor Update.” How fitting a title for the Koch brothers’ hostile takeover of the American electoral system.

You see, for the billionaires and millionaires who are dumping unseemly sums of money into shadowy political organizations, their donation is an investment in an America rigged to benefit themselves at the expense of the middle class. The Kochs’ political expenditures are investments, much like any other that is listed in their financial portfolios. And they absolutely expect monetary returns on their investments. The Koch’s bid for a hostile takeover of the American democracy is calculated to make themselves even richer. Yet, the Kochs and their Republican followers in Congress continue to assert that these hundreds of millions of dollars are free speech.

For evidence of that, look no further than the Republican Leader, who has flat out said “In our society, spending is speech.” Let me pose the question to the Republican Leader: If this unprecedented spending is free speech, where does that leave your middle-class constituents? How could everyday, working American families afford to make their voices heard, if money equals free speech? Should voters mortgage their homes if they are worried about climate change? If they are concerned about their children’s education, should they max out their credit cards making political contributions? Is our involvement in government completely dependent on our financial resources? The answer, of course, is ‘no.’ There should not be a million-dollar entry fee for participating in our democracy.”

I am very proud of Harry Reid for making this statement. It needs to be said and repeated over and over again. Reid has the courage to stand up and fight against this anti-democracy movement, which is owned and operated by the Koch brothers cabal of the very rich, and more senators, representatives and voters have to stand with him. He will not get the coverage he deserves for this statement, but I would like to see it penetrate the consciousness of every voting American. We can not let this Koch incursion stand.

“…money – which is a medium of commerce, something the Constitution gave Congress explicit control over …”

The amplification of ‘free’ speech by money – should be at the heart of this. Of course, the evil SCOTUS has said ‘money is speech’ but Spandan has the correct argument, in my view.

and not one GD day before then thank you very much. I saw someone on the freeway here in LA with that asinine bumper sticker on their car and had to restrain from myself from pulling along aside and screaming obscenities at the driver. 🙂
