“Meet the Press” was the third place Sunday morning show for the fourth week in a row.

The ratings mark even more trouble for “Meet the Press” who has seen its ratings plunge in recent months, starting in September when it fell to “This Week” for the first time in 16 years. “This Week” has topped “Meet the Press” in total viewers for 10 out of the last 11 weeks.

In the face of low ratings, Gregory has become a frequent target. His performance, as well as the network’s attempts to improve ratings, have been at the forefront of media talk and speculation in the last year. NBC News senior vice president Alex Wallace has dismissed the chatter and insisted that the show is “doubling down on David Gregory” ahead of plans to turn the program into a “7 days-a-week source for politics and beltway buzz”– with Gregory at the helm.

These people have no clue what is going on in America.

MTP will improve when NBC or DG start hold guests accountable. Book diverse voices and limit the number of GOPers and increase the dialogue with issues affecting USA.

    • May 8, 2014 at 3:02 pm

“These people have no clue what is going on in America.”

      Linda, you speak the truth.

“Beltway buzz” appeals only to the beltway.

NBC fails to understand the fundamental mistake they made when they replaced Tim Russert with upChuck Todd (in position of NBC Political Director — I think they divvied up Russert’s position into three separate ones).

upChuck knows only “horserace” politics, which was appealing during the 2008 once-in-a-lifetime campaigns.

For the past 6 years, Beltway media hope lightning will strike twice, thus focusing on a horserace while the horses are still in the paddocks.

Who wants to see that? Only Beltway media who are now bored out of their skulls because they only know how to report horserace.

There are a lot things NBC could do to improve Meet the Press (get rid of Gregory, to start with), but until NBC acknowledges their fundamental mistake, MTP is a lost cause.

In an interview with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on Thursday, MSNBC host Chuck Todd was accused of failing to cover events in Congress fairly. Reid said that the press, Todd included, “won’t call things the way they actually exist.” As a result, Reid said, Republicans receive fairer coverage in the media than they deserve.

WTG Sen Reid. This is what I have been wanting from Dems of every level to call out DC/NY Journos covering for the GOPers. Thank you sen Reid.

I am shocked that Chuck Todd did not edit that out.

What was it that Chucky Todd said, it’s not his job to seek the truth. So some Republican can be sitting before Chucky lying their head off, but it wouldn’t concern Chucky ,being the great journalists he is.

      May 8, 2014 at 2:35 pm

I like Sen. Reid more and more. Calking out the Koch bros. and now the msm is a brilliant strategy to expose the way the GOP never seems to pay a price for the bullshit they pull. The gop are not messaging geniuses like some think. Instead, they benefit from a biased and corrupt media. It is also important to recognize that the gop looks out for the rich and powerful which has always been an easier road to travel when compared to trying to help the weak and marginalized.

Nena, it’s about damned time these guys were called out. Chuck and co. not only don’t report on what’s really happening in Congress, they don’t care. If it doesn’t flatter Republicans, it doesn’t get reported. We are living through an era of the most blatantly biased media of all time and it’s going to hasten their demise, in my opinion. More and more people turn away from traditional sources of information because it’s become predictable claptrap. If I want information about what’s really happening in the world, the last thing I would do is turn on the tv or go to any traditional media source and I am not alone.

At Times All A President Can Say After Disaster Is, ‘We’re Here’

After meeting privately with survivors and first responders, Obama and a bipartisan group of Arkansas elected officials walked down Clover Ridge Drive to see up close what the tornado had done.

He walked up to Smith and his two sons, Gabriel and Garrison. “It’s good to see you guys,” the president said.

“Man, it’s wonderful to see you, sir,” Smith replied.

Smith shook the president’s hand. Obama gave his two sons small boxes of White House M&Ms.

“For someone of that stature to come out and want to see how you are and check on things means a lot,” Smith says.

Smith didn’t vote for Obama. In 2012, the president lost Arkansas by more than 20 percentage points. And this was his first time in the state either as a candidate or as president. But some things just transcend politics. Smith says he’s glad the president came to his cul-de-sac.

“It makes you feel like he’s in it with you, you know, it’s the support,” he says.

And in situations like this, that’s really all the president can do.

STATEN ISLAND — Rep. Michael Grimm, who quit as an FBI agent eight years ago, was barred from returning to its New York field offices — even after he was elected to Congress, DNAinfo New York has learned.

Federal security personnel at the FBI’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan and a satellite office in Kew Gardens, Queens, posted Grimm’s photo inside their glass-enclosed stations in the event he showed up, sources said.

They were under orders to stop him and to immediately notify higher authorities on what further action to take, according to the sources.

“He is not permitted in our space,” one source told “On The Inside.”

“He is not welcome,” a former top FBI official said.

Just my opinion…but Grimm looks to me like a steroid user which could explain his outbursts as roid rage.

    There’s this …

“RIA Novosti used to be one of the most widely cited and respected state-owned agencies. Though it was state-owned, it was seen as having a high degree of editorial independence. Just like ITAR-TASS, if these agencies had a bias it was usually well hidden, which meant that they both had the sources within the Russian government to have inside information but had the independence to properly report that. ITAR-TASS has become increasingly suspect since Russia’s invasion of Crimea and RIA was recently merged with Voice of Russia to create a new agency, confusingly called Russia Today (RT no longer stands for Russia Today, though this fact appears to have escaped most in the media, and many prominent Western politicians). In charge of that news agency is Dmitry Kiselev, a well known propagandist with a career of working to further the Kremlin’s goals.

Interestingly, RIA Novosti had gone days without posting any English-language news stories to its front page. In fact, we’re not exactly sure when they started again, but their top two stories today are different articles about Russia’s military might – one saying that the drill Putin personally led today “Showcases Russian Military Preparedness to Neighbors.” The other headline: “Russia to Quadruple Precision Strategic Weapon Platforms by 2021.”

In other words, RIA’s articles since their relaunch in English read suspiciously like Russian Defence Ministry press releases, messages that are meant to intimidate RIA’s English-speaking audiences.”

Address by Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk on the occasion of the Victory Day

    “Dear compatriots!

Ukrainians are the sixty-ninth time celebrating the liberation of Ukraine and Europe from the brown plague. And for the first time in sixty nine years it is happening in wartime. Albeit undeclared, but the real war led by the Russian regime against Ukraine.

For the first time after 1941 the enemy has crossed the borders of Ukraine, has violated its territorial integrity, annexed a part of the territory, sent sabotage and terrorist groups. Ukrainians are peaceful people who had never attacked anyone. But we have left no other choice but to take up weapons.

As if in a time machine we got back in the thirties. From thence has the leader of one of the neighboring countries borrowed his shocking rhetoric. Doesn’t the annexation of Crimea resemble the occupation of the Sudetenland? Doesn’t the non-recognition of Ukrainians as a separate from Russians nation look like discussions on preparations for the Anschluss of Austria?

Having faced with external aggression and terrorism, Ukraine even more values the immortal heroism of those who fought for the peace 69 years ago. Those who under different flags fought for Ukraine, for life, for the future.

About three million Ukrainian soldiers did not return from the battlefield. Five and a half million people in Ukraine were killed on the occupied territories. The war had destroyed nearly 700 cities and 28,000 villages. And the man who says now in Moscow that “we would have won without you” is making a desecration of the memory of millions who died.

We, the people-winner, have the right to be proud of our contribution to the overcoming of fascism. And in 1945 Ukraine deservedly became one of the founding countries of the UN.

Let’s commemorate those who died. Bow to those who are still alive and whose example we should follow now when our Homeland is facing again a mortal danger.

On behalf of the Government of Ukraine and me personally I cordially congratulate the veterans, children of war, anyone who, like me, believes May 9 as a great day!

I appeal to all patriots of Ukraine of different ideological views. I urge to refrain from any actions that enemies of Ukraine may use in the information war against our country.

I don’t expect that extremists will pause in its bloody affairs even on this day. Ukrainian leadership is informed about the black plans of Russian saboteurs and its mercenaries. We are taking all measures for safety, but we are opposed by people who are ready for anything. Please, if possible, refrain from any mass actions, and in case of participation in them not to succumb to provocations. Demonstrate tolerance to flags, slogans and other views.”

Full official statement at the link: http://www.kmu.gov.ua/control/en/publish/article;jsessionid=05E3F2CBC1917B0A9A44DF1D6FB81470?art_id=247281413&cat_id=244314971

Oleksandr Turchynov: Civilized countries do not negotiate with armed people with blood on their hands

“Ukrainian government has never conducted punitive operations in the country’s east. Law-enforcement structures are protecting lives and health of citizens within the framework of the counterterrorist operation that is being carried out against terrorists, saboteurs and other criminals who are killing, torturing and kidnapping our citizens,” in such words Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov commented on the statement of Vladimir Putin.

In his words, the government’s aim is to ensure stability and economic development of democratic independent Ukraine, as well as “peace, tranquility and security of Ukrainians”. “We must protect territorial integrity of our country and liberate temporary occupied territories,” the Chairman of the Parliament claimed adding that Ukrainian government is ready to negotiate with those who are willing to negotiate, and is ready to agree upon specific issues on the development of integral Ukraine.

“We are ready to discuss these issues with representatives of local government, public activists and entrepreneurs of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. However, civilized countries do not negotiate with armed people with blood on their hands. According to the law, they are neutralized,” he said emphasizing that amnesty will be applied only to those “who will voluntarily put down weapons and liberate buildings and to those who are not involved in killings and other grave crimes”.

His response, however, was more about how society feeds off effortless outrage:

This is consistent. We do cheap outrage on TV, we do cheap hashtag activism when it comes to the girls with Boko Haram, and this is cheap. She [Monica Lewisnky] has been a cheap punchline for too long. I’m telling you, putting a tweet up with a hashtag on it, you didn’t do your duty today.
His co-panelists, including CNN host Don Lemon were taken aback by Cain’s equating the recent #BringBackOurGirls hashtag, made viral by First Lady Michelle Obama, with the Lewinsky scandal.

CNN segment that was supposed to be focused on Monica Lewinsky’s return to the media landscape took a bizarre turn when commentator Will Cain attempted to equate the story with what he called, “cheap hashtag activism.”

“That’s disgusting to say about over 200 girls — what do you expect the First Lady to do?” Lemon pushed back.

Welcome folks to the red part of SoCal…

“It’s one of the hottest races in the country because it’s one that could go either way,” political analyst Carl Luna told 10News.

Luna said Peters must be careful about how voters perceive his relationship with a president whose popularity has almost hit rock bottom.

A spokesperson for the Peters campaign said the congressman will not be sharing the photo-op with Obama because he will be on the floor of the House of Representatives, casting votes that impact his constituents.

“It’s like when you extend regrets to the wedding you really didn’t want to go to anyway,” explained Luna. “He had cover for it, but he has to be careful. This is what happens when you have an unpopular president. In 2006, not a lot of Republicans wanted George Bush to be standing next to them on the campaign stump.”

Luna said Obama has lost some of his star appeal, but can still command big money from the Democratic faithful.

“The core donors are going to show up, but they’ve got to do a cost calculation,” explained Luna. “If it looks like 2014 is going Republican anyway, save your ammunition for 2016. So I expect the president will have a tougher time going to the till, the California ATM now than he did back in years past.”

Most Ukrainians want unified country, even in Russian-speaking east

        The Associated Press
        Published Thursday, May 8, 2014 5:13AM EDT
Last Updated Thursday, May 8, 2014 1:59PM EDT

KIEV, Ukraine — “A strong majority of Ukrainians want their country to remain a single, unified state and this is true even in the largely Russian-speaking east where a pro-Russia insurgency has been fighting for autonomy, a poll released Thursday shows.

The survey results were released just hours before the pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine said they would go ahead with a referendum on autonomy planned for Sunday, ignoring Russian President Vladimir Putin’s call to delay the vote.

The poll by the Pew Research Center in Washington found that 77 per cent of people nationwide want Ukraine to maintain its current borders, and even in the east the figure is 70 per cent. Only among Russian speakers does the percentage drop significantly, but it is still over half at 58 per cent.”

After two armed men threatened a Bureau of Land Management wrangler on Tuesday in western Utah, workers are removing BLM logos from their vehicles to help avoid additional incidents, the Salt Lake Tribune reported on Thursday.

The wrangler was driving on a highway near Mills, Utah when two people in a pick-up truck pulled up along side the vehicle. The occupants “told him he was No. 1 with that certain gesture,” Eric Reid, the wrangler’s supervisor at the BLM Fillmore Field Office, told the Tribune.

The men then reappeared in the pick-up truck a few minutes later wearing hoods and holding up a sign that read, “You need to die.” One of the men pointed a Glock handgun at the wrangler.

According to Reid, the two men put duct tape over their license plate so that the truck could not be identified, a strategy used by Bundy supporters in Nevada.
Federal workers will remove BLM logos from their vehicles as a “precaution,” according to Reid.

Born 130 years ago today, H.S.T. was not known for his willingness to absorb social slights or personal insults with equanimity. Still Mrs. Wallace could say almost anything and Truman would turn the other cheek. He had adored Bess since they first met as children, and knew that Bess was inseparable from her mother. He no doubt felt compassion for the old woman: In 1903, the Wallace family had been deeply scarred by tragedy when Madge’s husband, David, shot himself to death, filling both Mrs. Wallace and Bess with an abiding sense of shame.
