    Retiring Senator Rockefeller… http://www.politicususa.com/2014/05/06/democratic-senator-unloads-republicans-opposing-obama-wrong-color.html

Retiring Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller unloaded on Republicans during a hearing today. He said that Republicans don’t want anything good to happen for this president because he’s the wrong color.

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing on transportation funding, Sen. Rockefeller (D-WV) said, “It’s an American characteristic that you don’t do anything which displeases the voters, because you always have to get reelected here. I understand part of it. It has to do with — for some, it’s just we don’t want anything good to happen under this president, because he’s the wrong color.”

Rockefeller admitted that he is mad at himself for not speaking up about a lot of things earlier, and he criticized his colleagues for putting their own political self interest ahead of making the tough decisions to do what is right.

A couple of updates on Russia:

What does #Snowdenwald have to say? (Rhetorical question, crickets from both on anything having to do with Brazil or Russia.)

Continuing the economic shunning of Putin’s Russia:

“The pullout could be embarrassing for Mr. Putin, who attends the forum. As of Monday, the forum’s website was still trumpeting the participation of some American executives who now plan to skip the session. A picture of Lloyd Blankfein, the chairman and chief executive of Goldman Sachs, for instance, was shown on the site even as a company executive privately said “there’s almost zero chance” he will go unless the Ukraine situation suddenly reverses course.

Among the top administration officials who have been working the telephones are Valerie Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser and liaison to business; Jacob J. Lew, the Treasury secretary; Penny Pritzker, the commerce secretary; and Jeffrey D. Zients, the national economic adviser.”

The White House was briefly in lockdown after an unauthorised vehicle entered a restricted area near the US president’s residence, US officials say.

A vehicle trailed behind the Obama daughters’ motorcade as car barriers were lowered on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The driver was arrested and city police checked the car for explosives.

          • May 6, 2014 at 9:50 pm

I think they have been overwhelmed because of the incessant hate, toward our President & First Family, spewed incessantly by broadcast media, by the GOP and funded by the plutocrats.

            • May 6, 2014 at 10:04 pm

In 1994, they voted to limit protection to 10 years after they leave office But PBO signed a new law in January 2013 that says all former U.S. presidents and first ladies will receive lifetime Secret Service protection. It also authorizes protection for the children of former presidents until they are 16 years old.

Interesting info from Arapaho that the MSM tweets are bored with the Clinton baby bump, etc. Hillary seems to have no sense of timing. Once again, she is being premature…..acting coy, but letting people build committees, fund raise, etc. The sense of inevitability is wearing, as Mitt found out. And now, he, too, is being pushed for 2016. This is absolutely ridiculous, and it is tiring. She has learned nothing from PBO, and could not have had a better teacher.

Here’s a cheap bit of analysis: there have been no scandals in the Obama administration, therefore the WHPC is bored, so they have to manufacture news, so every little stupid thing they jump on, and the big things they ignore. For instance, healthcare, unemployment figures, Ukraine, the Nigerian girls, the President’s trip to Asia, so much important going on but it would necessitate studying and educating themselves. When there are scandals, they don’t have to work, they just have to show up and ask stupid questions. So, without scandals, they are at a loss as to what constitutes news. They will not deal with climate change in any responsible or adult manner, it’s not “sexy” or easy.

There’s no war to trump up, and they know PBO is not going to send troops anywhere, and they love imbedding with the troops, though they would never get themselves near danger. They are children who are too lazy to work.

    • May 6, 2014 at 9:46 pm

“So, without scandals, they are at a loss as to what constitutes news.”

        May 6, 2014 at 11:44 pm

Without scandals they just make them up. Facts are irrelevant, just lie. The media is at an all time low. They are owned by the greedy corporations to do their bidding.
We are privy to the best of times (PBO and his competent administration and appointments) and the worse of times (far right bigoted GOP, opinionated media, powerful NRA and Conservative majority Supreme Court taking us backwards).

NW, the Breaking Bad letter seeking advice gets the troll-so-hard award of the year!

Still thinking about Skyler and how she became so disenchanted with life, family, money.
(bit of weird trivia: the bracelets she wears in Season 3 and 4 are designs by an old boyfriend.)

    • 52 Nerdy Wonka
      May 6, 2014 at 10:15 pm

      Hello, Miss Celebrity! 🙂

It’s so perfect. When I came upon the tweet, I didn’t read the tweet at first, I read the story because it was a picture in the tweet and I kept saying to myself, this sounds weirdly like the plot of Breaking Bad. Then I read the tweet and cracked up.

What happened to Skyler was fascinating and disturbing to watch. Ennui, then rage at Walt’s cancer, then finding out Walt’s secret, then the affair, then being a participant in Walt’s deviant world, then becoming a version of the Walt she claimed to hate by having the guy she had an affair with, visited and taken care of by bad guys because he dared stand in her way, then losing everything and becoming broken.

The show was an eye opener in that though they never touched the meth they were creating, it destroyed their lives in a similar manner as the addicts who were hooked.

      • May 6, 2014 at 10:22 pm

Excellent point. The White family never did meth themselves but they were just as destroyed as those who did. It touched everything they did and felt.

Skylar never recovered from Walter’s first betrayal early in the first season. That lie was far too significant. He become emotionally isolated from everyone except Jesse and then, even in the end, still really never understood.

Amazing psychology in this series! I think I may have to watch it again!

Rachel had the political writer for the Charlotte paper as her guest before the final results were in. Tillis talks moderation, but has not acted so in the state assembly. He is supported by the Republican establishment, and will have endless supplies of money against Hagan. He’s not officially tea party, but he’s not good.

        • May 6, 2014 at 10:34 pm

He’s horrible, Carolyn. If Senator Hagan hangs tough on #Obamacare, minimum wage, jobs, immigration reform, etc., she can defeat him. My comment was merely an indication that it appears that the #Teabaggers are no longer the darlings they were in 2010 and 2012 – at least in NC.

    • 78 amk for obama
      May 6, 2014 at 10:25 pm

Thom Tillis, speaker of the North Carolina House, has won the GOP primary for Senate avoiding a July run-off, according to the Associated Press.

Tillis, the establishment Republican choice who had backing from Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney in recent days, beat out the Tea Party candidate, Greg Brannon, as well as the social conservative choice Mark Harris. With 54 percent of precincts reporting, Tillis captured 45 percent of the vote, while Brannon had 27 percent and Harris had 17.

The results in North Carolina were the first sign that the establishment may have beaten down the Tea Party rebellion in its effort to re-take the Senate, but in a series of primaries over the next six weeks it will continue to be tested.

(and of course the mandatory dems are doomed msm concern trolling)

Tillis’ victory allows Republicans to focus squarely on the Democrat, vulnerable incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan, instead of being mired down in a prolonged primary.

      If you read this

you can see eerie parroting of the same gop talking points – establishment is winning, dem is doomed.

      • 80 Gwendolyn Carter
        May 7, 2014 at 2:06 am

        Amk For Obama,

You are correct when you state gop/teaparty have the same talking points; however, you are not correct in assuming “the dem is doomed.” The people of NC are fed up with republicans governing the state. NC valves education, and businesses valve educated workers. The republicans are in the process of destroying public education. Many NC citizens do not support the changes to education. Teachers are leaving the state due to decreases in pay. Also, citizens do not like the voter suppression tactics. NC signed up for the ACA in large numbers, and they do not like the fact that the Governor refused Medicaid expansion. What is needed is organization to inform the public about Senator Hagan’s positions, Also, education is needed to show people who they need to vote for because I have been told the ballots do not identify candidates by party affiliation. I shall go to NC to help canvass, and donate to various NC democrats. This is an election we must win. The republicans are removing ALL stops to win NC. If we, democrats, work hard, we can win in November. We must keep a “Yes. We. Can!” attitude. The election is ours to win.

  26. May 6, 2014 at 10:53 pm

In conjunction with the big climate change report…….here is a novel solution being bandied about in NYC

“To prepare for rising sea levels, the Big U would be a green shield protecting Manhattan’s coastline. As sea levels rise along the New York City waterfront, “100-year” storm surges may eventually happen as often as every three years, with more chances of Sandy-like damage if the city doesn’t rebuild its borders. One redesign under consideration now: Big U, a 10-mile long shield of parks and community spaces that would help protect Manhattan neighborhoods from flooding. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and a network of collaborators over the last 10 months, Big U is one of 10 finalists in the Rebuild by Design competition launched by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last year.

The design is focused as much on the everyday needs of local neighborhoods as on flood protection–an approach that’s very different than how infrastructure has been built in the past. In New Orleans after Katrina, floodwalls were made to meet engineering criteria, not social needs. And New York has its own long past of large-scale projects that focused more on efficiency than people….”

    • May 6, 2014 at 11:06 pm

This is EXACTLY the type of planning that is essential, LP. Some of my closets colleagues are advancing this project and many similar projects throughout the US and elsewhere and are, FINALLY, having organizations like the US Army Corps of Engineers and others not only pay attention but actively begin supporting their proposals. Rather than ‘floodwalls’ in places like the coast line from Texas to Florida, they are planning to implement extensive restoration of ‘wet lands’ and other natural barriers.

It’s not the expertise doesn’t exist – it’s that petro-kleptocrats have done everything their money can buy to avert climatic chaos – my preferred term to ‘global warming.’

      • May 6, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Yes, I noticed the Army Corps of Engineers has been much more proactive especially in the Midwest recently. I know they were AWAL about 4 yrs. ago in Iowa City, while I was living there, and all we had a 100yr. flood. Same scenario in Mizzou a couple of years ago. I know the erosion of ‘wet lands’ was a primary factor in the flooding of N.O during Katrina……most people don’t realize that……and BP as part of is settlement w/ the Justice Dept. was supposed to pay a heavy fine 5 Billion+ that was to go towards some Louisiana restoration, but I don’t know if that case has been finalized…..or Jindal is doing some B.S. w/ the money.

Projects such as the one in Manhattan should be the focus of Congress. But when you have fools pre-occupied with elections and with hate of a duly twice-elected president, you end up with focus groups on Benghazi. Abstract that will not bring one single job to people, or stop climate change. As long as it does well with the “base”, so what? Actually, why not add Monica Lewinski’s very timely tell all book?

About the abducted girls in Nigeria, I am very proud and pleased that POTUS has offered help and that Mr. Goodluck has accepted a contingent to come in. My sincere hope is that while those counter-terrorist experts look for the girls, they will have their eyes open and look for whatever else they can find. The world is no longer innocent as it was centuries ago. And one should never underestimate Africa.

    • May 7, 2014 at 1:05 am

The assumption is that the terrorists have taken the girls across the Cameroon and/or Chad borders.

Here’s what they did at the Cameroon border (May 5):

You might be interested in how this story played in the media with a timeline (abduction occurred on the same day that the South Korean ferry capsized):

And in social media (posted earlier today on a previous thread):

NCLB, I replied to you, but the comment is awaiting moderation.

I included some tweets that I’ve posted here before, but the gist of my response was that this may be another multination crisis that the Obama Administration has had to deal with quite often (heard on the radio that girls may have been abducted to Cameroon and/or Chad).

      • 95 No Child Left Behind
        May 7, 2014 at 1:29 am

POTUS has to be multi-tasked. How else could he do his job? Crisis overlap. He never has a break. However, he has found a good strategy: not to do it alone particularly when the security of the US is not directly targeted. The best is to engage the rest of the world that for too long sat and let us handle it alone. And when his former friends in the right side of the Senate want to act fast and go to war, they should simply go with their sons and daughters, families and friends.

Saw Hillary speaking to a group on Lawrence’s show. Thought about watching the future campaign hoping she does not try to disparage PBO’s record in order to come off as a savior from “this horrible mess he left us in.” I am neither saying she has said that nor it is a horrible mess. You all know I am a big PBO supporter. I think no one could take us as far as he has even without considering the obstruction he faced.
