      Congrats on 1st Alycee!!!

h/t to Yardarm756 for posting this poignant, absolutely essential article …

      • May 3, 2014 at 4:15 pm

        From the article:

I am obligated to try to see the world through George Bush’s eyes, no matter how much I may disagree with him. That’s what empathy does—it calls us all to task, the conservative and the liberal … We are all shaken out of our complacency.

Barack Obama, The Audacity of Hope

…the question then is how do we work through these conflicts? Is it possible for us to join hands in common effort? As citizens of a vibrant and varied democracy, how do we engage in vigorous debate? How does each of us remain firm in our principles, and fight for what we consider right, without, as Father John said, demonetizing those with just as strongly held convictions on the other side?

BTW, as much as the Crimean Tatars are dedicated to peaceful resolution, this situation could get really nasty given that it appears Tatars from all of Crimea and elsewhere are traveling to this border crossing and the russian terrorists are being dispatched to the site.

If only Turkey didn’t have such a corrupt Prime Minister in Mr Erdogan. Turkey has a solemn responsibility to the Crimean Tatars, as has been noted several times in posts here at TOD. If the Tatars are attacked, PM Erdogan has all the necessary authority to close the Bosphorus Straits to Russian ships. See, for instance – http://ukrainianpolicy.com/turkey-warns-russia-it-will-blockade-bosphorus/

Subj: Fwd: Joke of the Day -CB

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.

“Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked.

“Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. “On a trip to the Big Horn Mountains out in Wyoming, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.” I yelled, “Now, back off or I’ll kick the shit out of all of you”

Saint Peter was impressed, “When did this happen?”

    “A couple of minutes ago.”

A man received the following text from his neighbor:

I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess.

I have been tapping your wife, day and night when you’re not around.

In fact, more than you. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse.

I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest

apology with my promise that it won’t happen again.

The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun,

and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.

A few moments later, a second text came in:

Damn autocorrect. I meant “wifi”, not “wife”.

Aye Aye Sailor-man! I too am a Navy Vet. (But I was a bad sailor. Never learned to swim and was seasick like nobody’s business.), However, my job involved training helicopter pilots in simulators so I didn’t have to worry about setting sail. I was the only female “of color” in my command; but my upbringing on the Southside of Chicago really helped me deal with a lot of the b.s. and survive. Honorably discharged as a 2nd Class P.O. with no regrets even though I had a short-timer’s attitude with 3yrs. to go. 🙂

Hey “Home-girl”. You were quite a few years after me. There weren’t too many “Airdales” of color during my time and the USS Forrestal was the largest carrier in the fleet.
I was the first black ET to go to A school and the first to teach there too. I turned down CPO after a tour in ‘nam on a Destroyer…..Southsiiiide! 🙂

I joined up when Carter was pres. We were training Iraqis and Iranians (right before their revolution) because they were buying SH-2s (anti-sub. helos) from us. I did my A schools in Millington, Tenn. A combination of B.E.E, Aviation basics, and special Tradevman (training, maintenance, and operations) schools. Learned how to be a systems trouble-shooter, so no complaints about the skills I acquired. The SEALS and SERE were also part of FASOTRAGRUPAC (ha, say that real fast) 😀 Crazy times!

I was on my second hitch on Instructor duty in GLakes when Kennedy was shot and we went on nationwide alert. I taught B.E.E. at GLakes in ’63 before transistors/solid state stuff. I was one of the last ‘old school’ vacuum tube types, ha! Strictly Destroyers and Minesweepers for me on 6 of the 7 seas.

Believe it or not, I was taught vacuum tubes and solid state trans. We were still feeding paper-tape into the computers, and manually in-putting data to buffers, we had drawers and drawers of computer cards at the same time we were operating state of the art motion based and visuals. After that stuff doesn’t this new tech. seem a lot easier?

I think I’m going to need vids of tonight’s festivities——-too long of a time period to threaten mr. dotster with violence, per chips excellent tip, to scare him into being in sole charge of grandson for the entirety of his stay. I had my broomstick and frying pan ready to swing around in a threatening manner, but from 5-10 (midwest)?——-that’s a lot of swinging and looking scary mean——-and can’t say, “Shhhhhhhh grandson, granny’s trying to watch President Obama and Not Important people!” Sigh. (how ’bout mr. dotster has to give him his bath because he’s a boy and grandson is a boy?——is that convincing?) (and mr. dotster is the far superior reader and so he should read bedtime stories?—–do you think he’ll fall for it?)

I think the bath and story idea could work beautifully, especially if you take the first shift of this visit and involve yourself thoroughly (games, walk/yard work, early supper, etc. etc). Then you can give Mr. Dotster *his* turn for male bonding time, while you recover with a cup o’tea (and PBO of course).

I feel physically sick after reading MoDo’s OpEd piece.

She’s always had a nasty streak, but now she’s allowed to opine on how worthless Obama is without anything to support this assertion. The fact that someone in Hailmarysville believes it is all she needs.

If it would do any good, I would run screaming across town yelling F*** You Maureen Dowd, that’s how angry this piece makes me.

She ups the ante on echo-chamber media. I am never clicking on a link to her again. My blood pressure won’t take it.

She offers a quote from a “top Dem” who says the Clintons “take the oxygen out of the room.”

HELLO, Maureen — do you even pay attention to when either PBO or FLOTUS walk into a room? Especially when there’s young people in the room.

I thought I hated Ezra and his snobby wife the most, but today’s its MoDo.

I haven’t seen 57andFemale here today, but she wrote an amazing assessment of WJC’s second term (it was so good, I think she must have worked in DC in 1998).

Her post is in this thread (from Thursday): http://theobamadiary.com/2014/05/01/rise-and-shine-809/

Bill’s actual legacy SUCKED but he hid it under his charm, and frankly impeachment (which was a gross misuse of Congress’ power) made him the underdog that we all wanted to embrace (that includes me).
His actual record is pretty damned deplorable. The Telecom Bill of 1996 is the reason RWNJ’s and corporatists now own the air waves.

      Thanks, Bill.

DADT, but there were mitigating circumstances. I’ll give him that.

Welfare ‘reform’ was a Republican wet dream.

The “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” doesn’t get anywhere near the awful press it deserves: it is the basis of pharmacists refusing to dispense birth control and – wait for it – a major basis of the Hobby Lobby case as an excuse for using religion as a means of denying health care (and God knows what else). The bar for such actions was set very low in this law – I don’t remember Bill Clinton having any issues with it – because he was gonna win all the Evangelical racists with his Southern charm (fast forward to the 2008 primaries).
And of course – Gramm-Leally (that spelling is wrong, I know). This deregulation of the financial industry is the REASON for the economic collapse of 2008. Bill ‘defended’ himself from impeachment during the day, and then was all chummy with Newt and Phil Gramm in the afternoon, crafting this destruction of the New Deal banking regulations.

Bill Clinton stood at the point where anti-trust laws could be restored and he could have undone the privatization of government. Instead, he put privatization on steroids, and by the time PBO became POTUS, these ways of doing business were so entrenched that they could not be undone, especially in this political climate.

Bill Clinton only plays progressive when he’s campaigning. His record is deplorable in actuality and yes – Hillary has to tell us how she feels about each and every law mentioned above that got her husband’s signature.

      • 66 hopefruit2
        May 3, 2014 at 5:08 pm

The Clintons are no where as popular as Barack Obama – regardless of what Dowd, her friends in the media or some “Top Dem” claims. And this is why so much effort is being made by certain groups to promote the Clintons at Obama’s expense.

Notice there is no such effort on the part of the media when it comes to the Republican Presidents/Presidential Candidates… I am yet to see a column from an MSM outlet comparing Romney with Bush, Bush with Reagan, Romney with Bush 41, McCain with Bush/Romney/Reagan, etc

Somehow the media’s need to compare always seems to be about Obama & Clinton, with Obama being typically portrayed unfavorably – despite the facts…very transparent indeed.

        • May 3, 2014 at 5:13 pm

WJC did a lot of damage to this country (see 57F’s comment above).

But WJC, like GWB is allowed to get away with the damage without a peep from the MSM.

Gosh, what’s the difference between those three Presidents (aside from the fact that PBO says what he means and means what he says)? Just can’t put my finger on the difference (total snark).

THE standard for elegance and drop-dead gorgeous First Couple with fun and lively get-togethers is the Obamas. They have set the bar higher than anyone else could hope to achieve for the next century or so.

          • 68 hopefruit2
            May 3, 2014 at 5:20 pm

57 has always been spot on in her assessment of WJC’s true legacy as opposed to the fluff we get from the media. And of course, now that PBO is President, the media is even more motivated to gloss over WJC’s follies just to attack PBO, and cause division among Dems.

I agree with all the comments here from Arapaho, 57 and female and hopefruit.
However one thing the hideous Dowd creature said is hard to deny: “The Clintons suck the oxygen out of the room.”
              They do that.

On the day 8 Million was reached Chelsea announced her pregnancy.

The Clintons and their enablers are a malignancy.
I wish Adam Silver or anyone for that matter, could ban them for life.

Back from visiting son and family. Had a very good time, love to be with the grandkids. The older one (7th grade) is growing up so fast! His voice is lower every time I see him now……went to Emily’s soccer game this a.m. (4 years old)…..pretty much what you would expect…..but she likes it.
My wonderful son cleaned up my computer! I could hardly type when I posted, the keys wouldn’t connect…..he told me it was “dirty”…but that was natural after six years of use. Said I probably need a newer, lighter, faster one. I’ll do that before he comes up to visit in July so he can set it up for me. He is a wonderful son. Computers are his profession, has his own Computer Networking business. Works for mostly lawyers and doctors in north Dallas. So…..no one else ever touches our computers! Now, it’s working so nicely, I’m thrilled. I can write without delay!!!

Now I’ll have time to catch up with TOD……even missed the 25 million celebration…..wow! What a mark. I too remember when we were looking for 6 or 7 million. This place has GROWN……a wonderful place.

So…….will watch the WHPCD with whatever is posted here………always interesting, with PBO!

      Hi, Carolyn.

Thankfully Oklahoma has been spared the worst from Mother Nature — isn’t tomorrow the anniversary of devastating tornadoes there?

Check out the photo in this tweet – finally got a chance to capture a screen shot from a @maddow show on Oklahoma versus solar energy. If you have the time, check out the video — she says that red states distance themselves from the OK crazy (the same guy who said ban traditional marriage so that no one (including gays) can marry is the guy who proposed charging people who install solar panels in their homes).

Rachel did a segment on Oklahoma vs. solar energy on Apr 24 (note the shape of the reddest of the red states in the photo):

      • 89 carolyn
        May 3, 2014 at 6:01 pm

I hope Rachel keeps hammering this stuff. She was excellent the Thursday after the botched execution…..I hadn’t watched her on Wed. Gov Fallin is not doing well. Thursday afternoon she had a “press statement” it certainly was not a press conference, in which she had to announce that an out of state entity would be doing the investigation…..not a self investigation. She read her statement, short…and left. My husband said, undoubtedly her lawyer wrote it and told her to say NO more. She looked pretty haggard. This is not her finest moment.

Yes, I’ve heard Rachel’s premise, and I have no idea why. At one time we had Democratic governors, Senators, representatives, and a balanced legislature. They have slowly and deliberately undone all the good the former Democratic administrations did.
For some reason Fallin is very popular…..I can’t figure it out.

The front page of the city paper says “Convicted killer’s autopsy is likely to take months.” and no more executions can take place until that is finished and the investigation is complete. I’m trying to figure out what her big hurry was to have these TWO in one night. The best we can come up with is that she’s up for re-election, and she wanted to get her “tough on crime” bona fides in good order. She is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer.

‘ The correspondent’s association, which represents the White House press corps, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Several journalists were to be awarded prizes for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

A Republican state senate candidate who supported North Carolina’s ban on gay marriage once worked as a female impersonator at a gay nightclub, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Saturday.

Real estate agent Steve Wiles, 34, went by “Mona Sinclair” when he worked at the now-closed Club Odyssey in the early 2000s, according to the club’s co-owner and another former employee. Wiles’ former co-workers claim he was gay at the time and was a frequent visitor at the nightclub before he began working there.

Wiles denied that he worked as Mona Sinclair in interviews with the Winston-Salem Journal, and responded “no” when the newspaper asked whether he was gay.
