The First Lady And Second Lady Honor Military Families

White House: Philanthropic Organizations Pledging More Than $100 Million To Veteran And Military Communities

Today, as part of the third anniversary of Joining Forces, the First Lady and Dr. Biden announced that the Council on Foundations will lead the philanthropic community in establishing the Veterans Philanthropy Exchange, which will be an enduring forum for donors to communicate and share best practices about supporting the veteran and military communities. “We’ve got to show our veterans and military families that our country is there for them not just while they’re in uniform, but for the long haul,” said the First Lady. The First Lady also announced that the philanthropic community is pledging more than $100 million over the next five years to support veterans and military families. These commitments will fund organizations that support service members, veterans, survivors, and their families.

The First Lady also called upon more donors to join this effort in order to fully support all those nonprofits and community groups that do such wonderful work for the military and veteran communities every day. The announcement signaled the launch of the Philanthropy — Joining Forces Impact Pledge, a new commitment to bring support to service members, veterans, and military family causes over five years. “To all the military families here today and across the country, I just want you to know that this is just a first step,” added the First Lady. “We’re going to get more donors involved in this effort. We’re going to keep reaching out to people all across the country so that no matter where you live or work, you will be surrounded by a country that truly honors your service and your sacrifice, now and in the years and decades ahead. That is our pledge to you.”

Yahoo: First Lady Announcing Pledges For Vets, Families

First lady Michelle Obama announced pledges from foundations and corporations totaling more than $160 million Wednesday to help veterans and their families get the services they need as the country adjusts to a postwar footing. Calling this a “pivotal moment for our military families and for our country” as the war in Afghanistan ends, the first lady said military families should never have to face the challenges associated with the transition to civilian life alone.

Appearing at a conference of philanthropic groups, Mrs. Obama warned that with fewer homecoming videos and welcome-home parades for returning troops likely in future years, “we cannot allow ourselves to forget their service to our country. … We’ve got to show our military families that our country is there for them not just while they’re in uniform but for the long haul.” The first lady highlighted the launch of the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge, under which more than 30 organizations are making commitments to provide a range of services over the next five years, including $62 million in existing commitments and $102 million in new pledges over the next five years.

{{JO’B}} – An honour to enter with you, dear p. laureate!

(I’m still enjoying the pattern created by FLOTUS’ sweater in the first pic, so I haven’t progressed much down the thread as yet. 😀 )

I don’t know for sure, but I might be able to get away with it if whoever photographs me in the sweater focuses on the same view but starts at the chin. Hmmmmm, might be the perfect shot for a Chips Chica commission.

              Love it.

Hey, if you’re “on the bike” tomorrow, here’s a song for ya. I was looking for “Three Times a Lady,” as recommended by Nena for Mrs. O and Dr. B, but found this instead … none of us are 16, including them, but I did mention it was “by accident,” that I found it, as the great grandson would say!

I haven’t been on the bike since the last time you shared music with me! 😉 [See, it’s all your fault.] My excuse for tomorrow is that I have to go to work, but I’ll actually try for Saturday just because you’ve planted the idea by sending me the music. 🙂 Thank you kindly that you remember to prod from time to time. 🙂

Donald Sterling, is not the only racist in the sports world these days:

“Barcelona soccer star Neymar certainly knows how to grab headlines. Within hours of teammate Dani Alves eating a banana thrown at him by a racist fan in Spain, Neymar had launched an Internet campaign against racism and placed himself at the center of an international outrage. It might have looked like a spontaneous response to the abuse meted out at Alves, but in fact it was a carefully choreographed campaign planned in advance by his PR team.

The idea of a concerted response to racism arose earlier this month after Neymar himself was subjected to abuse during a match against Granada. He and his PR team wanted to take the sting out of the word monkey frequently used against black players in Spain, and together they came up with a concept and a hashtag and were just waiting for the right moment to launch it online. Enter Alves……

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

“It’s a disgrace that prejudice still exists in 2014,” Neymar wrote on his blog. “It’s time that we said enough is enough. My way of helping bring an end to this once and for all is to do what Dani Alves did today!!” And so thousands of fans did too, photographing themselves eating bananas and posting the images on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Soccer stars and celebrities also got involved. Among those who joined the online campaign were fellow footballers Roberto Carlos, David Luiz and Sergio Aguero, singer Michael Teló and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Mark it down as a lesson for FIFA, soccer’s governing body, as it struggles to find ways to stamp out racist chants and abuse from its international fan base….”

We all know military homecoming videos can be addicting.

Once you start, you sort of can’t stop. Neither can First Lady Michelle Obama, who admitted today at a Joining Forces event at the American Red Cross that she binge-watches military homecoming videos.
“I don’t know about you, but I could watch those videos all day,” she said. “These scenes tug at our heartstrings … but these heartfelt moments raise so many questions and so many concerns: What happens after the cameras are turned off? What’s next for those families?”

Returning veterans often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries, Mrs. Obama pointed out. In addition to serving as caregivers for their spouses, military husbands and wives may have trouble finding work, and their children struggle to cope with repeated moves and constant uncertainty, she said. “For most of us, that surprise homecoming, that feel-good moment, that’s the happy ending to the story, but for these families, it’s really just the beginning,” the first lady said.

The Veterans Philanthropy Exchange, a new association of more than 30 military support charities, has pledged $102 million in funding for military families over the next five years, the first lady announced today. That’s on top of their existing $62 million pledge. “We are at a pivotal moment. By the end of this year, after 13 long years of war, our war in Afghanistan will be over,” Mrs. Obama said. “More and more of our newest veterans, the 9/11 generation, will be hanging up their uniforms and transitioning to civilian life.” “It’s going to be easy to forget the burdens they’ve shouldered,” she added. “We’ve got to show our veterans and military families that our country is there for them, not just when they’re in uniform, but for the long haul.”

From the tailend of previous thread:

Have we heard from CEB? I think she lives in the northeast part of Florida (near Jacksonville, not Tallahassee), but this is rain of truly biblical proportions.

“As much as 5 inches may have fallen in a single hour, from 9 to 10 p.m., NBC News reports. That’s more than the entirety of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan.”

CEB and I are apparently the same age, based on her description of voting for the first time in 1972 at the age of eighteen.

Stay dry, warm, and safe, CEB.

“As the U.S. economy teetered on the brink of contraction in the first quarter, one thing stood out. Healthcare spending increased at its fastest pace in more than three decades. That surge is attributed to the implementation of President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Because of Obamacare, the nation narrowly avoided its first decline in output in three years……

“GDP growth would have … been negative were it not for healthcare spending,” said Harm Bandholz, chief economist at UniCredit Research in New York.
Healthcare spending increased at a 9.9 percent annual rate, the quickest since the third quarter of 1980, and it contributed 1.1 percentage points to GDP growth. The economy expanded at only a 0.1 percent rate in the first quarter, held back by a drop in exports and business investment, which economists attributed to a harsh winter. A sharp slowdown in the pace of inventory accumulation was also a drag.

The gauge of healthcare spending published on Wednesday is simply an estimate based on Medicaid benefits, ACA insurance exchange enrollments, and other related information. Firm data will not be available until June, and the government could well revise its figures for both healthcare and overall GDP…”

One of the teaser articles that accompanied the Vanity Fair article is one about the “Clinton baby bump.”

Is the US media, particularly those geared toward a female audience, going to treat Chelsea’s pregnancy like William and Kate’s?

If so, I am doing my best to avoid “female” magazines and newsites.

Facebook is to start serving ads to third-party mobile apps via a new advertising network.

It announced the move at the start of its F8 developers conference, which is being held in San Francisco.

The decision to launch the Audience Network has the potential to disrupt the ad sector thanks to the depth of knowledge the firm has about its users.

But one company watcher said the social network would need to be wary of privacy concerns.

“Facebook will have to make sure from the outset that it sets some stringent guidelines as to exactly the type of data that it shares with advertisers,” Lara O’Reilly, senior reporter at MarketingWeek magazine, told the BBC.

“This is moving away from the Facebook platform, where people feel a little bit more comfortable with targeted advertising, onto mobile app screens, which people can feel are very personal.”

“On the Ongoing Violations of OSCE Commitments by Russia in Ukraine and OSCE Activities in Ukraine

As delivered by Ambassador Daniel B. Baer to the Permanent Council

    Vienna, April 30, 2014

The United States is pleased to welcome Ambassador Biščević to the Permanent Council today. We thank you for your leadership of the National Dialogue Project and for your report. But before I turn to the issue of your report and recommendations, I would like to address the Russian Federation’s continued violations of OSCE principles and commitments in Ukraine.

Mr. Chair, despite the concerted efforts and uniform outrage of the international community, Russia continues to act in defiance of international law and the fundamental norms of international behavior that have underpinned peace and security in Europe for a generation. It has been 61 days – let me repeat that – 61 days, since the Russian Federation began its illegal military actions in Crimea. It has been thirteen days since the Joint Statement by Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and the EU was issued in Geneva. And it has been five days since pro-Russian separatists abducted a team of unarmed Vienna Document observers.

During that time, Russia has deliberately avoided taking any significant steps toward de-escalation. It continues to illegally occupy the sovereign Ukrainian territory of Crimea. Its troops remain massed on the border with Ukraine. Its agents, against a backdrop of unyielding and disgusting propaganda, continue to provoke violence in eastern Ukraine. Yesterday’s events in Luhansk and this morning’s in Horlivka were described as taking place with military efficiency: that is no coincidence.

Russia has done nothing to implement its Geneva commitments.”
