The American death penalty kills innocent people, is demonstrably racist, and in Oklahoma, is now administered via torture. It is 2014.

It's amazing to me that people who don't trust the government to do anything trust them with the death penalty. @robdelaney

States have botched executions before, but Oklahoma just literally, knowingly, *rolled the dice* on lethal injection drug combo. Monstrous.

Again, if you think the tax code is too invasive, you probably shouldn't trust the government to kill people.

“Pity the modern executioner. The Supreme Court has burdened him with obligations that reflect considerable ambivalence about his profession. (States generally do not release the names of executioners, but they appear to be almost all men.) The underlying task has remained unchanged throughout history, but over the years the Court has mandated that executions be conducted with some finesse. In 1890, the Justices said that the process could not include “torture or a lingering death.” Accordingly, in 2008, the Court rejected a challenge to execution by lethal injection—the prevailing method in the thirty-five states with prisoners on death row—because, as Chief Justice John Roberts noted in his opinion, the procedure did not present a “substantial risk of serious harm.” In other words, death is required, but harm is forbidden. Clear?…..
Well done, LP!! Congrats on 1st!
Excellent compilation, as always, NW!!!
She shall now be called Governor Death Panel.
Perfect Carolyn!!!
In your honor …
It appears that Republican females are a very strange bunch of females. 😦
Wickedly strange, sailor, wickedly.
And she overturned the state supreme court decision to torture people to death
http://theweek.com/article/index/260632/oklahoma-just-neutered-its-state-supreme-court
“the head of the executive branch of state government had just proclaimed that she would not recognize a duly issued order by the state Supreme Court because she did not agree with it”
Congrats lovely!
I have followed the Innocence Project somewhat over the years. So many on death row have been proven innocent because of DNA testing. Aside from being morally reprehensible (IMO), there is no way the death penalty can be applied fairly. Money talks. If someone has the resources he/she can buy the best experts as defense witnesses. They can hire the best lawyers. Those who are poor are most likely to receive the death penalty.
Congrats LovelyPlains!
Thanks for the post, NW.
Why didn’t the Governor tell the truth? Why she postponed the second execution?
I assume that she assumes that this tweet will vindicate her from her evil and incompetence.
Thank you SO much Nerdy, this execution story is just too much.
You’re welcome, Chips.
The real time reporting of the execution shows just what a barbaric law the death penalty is. It’s inhumane, because as the Innocence Project shows, many of these death row inmates are innocent.
Just sent you a DM, Chips.
She did everyone a service by witnessing and reporting on this torture……. her tweets were after leaving the chamber FYI
“The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.” – John Paul II, who was canonized yesterday
He should have added (red states) after united states.
Axis of evil. Nice company they have got.
Thank you for mentioning the former Pope, since the Catholic church is against the death penalty and speaks out often on it.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
All of us – with or without being part of an organized religion (it’s a matter of conscience) – should be against it, if for no other reason than sometimes people on death row are found to be INNOCENT, before they are put to death, and released. Aren’t we supposed to be a civilized society? When does that start?
Envy not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
As usual, I am too late to post on the last thread, but here’s my comment on the outstanding PSA on the previous thread (I actually posted on that thread instead of this one…)
This is the most mind-blowing and effective PSA I’ve ever seen (as I recall, perhaps I’m forgetting another PSA) and seems inspired by Will.i.am’s 2008 “Yes We Can” campaign video for Senator Obama, only with famous faces.
Proof that Campaign 2014 is well underway by the Obama Administration. This calibre of work takes time to script, produce and edit. Valerie Jarrett talked to Zach Galifinakis six months before “Between Two Ferns” aired.
The Obama Administration has to be the most disciplined and strategic ever. No question they are the best at planning and executing action to fulfill promises which Joe Biden and Barack Obama have made to this country.
The despicable MSM/Koch attempt to shame OUR PRESIDENT on foreign soil (taboo before a Black man became President, a man who actually gets his goals accomplished despite roadblocks by the incompetent and fractured GOP) and the pathetic GOP are left with nothing to campaign on except for #Benghazi!, a successful ACA and, of course, their ace in their sleeve, bigotry.
MSM and GOP have no clue how far behind the Obama team they truly are.
This PSA also reminds me of the “Brother’s Keeper” initiative which was ignored (right?) by the MSM and emoprogs, an initiative that NO OTHER PRESIDENT in US history could have done.
Yet MSM have nothing but criticism for the most successful Administration
Forgot the tweet on this subject.
“MSM and GOP have no clue how far behind the Obama team they truly are.”
TRUTH!!!
Thank you Arapaho!!
#TrustBarack … or, at least be smart enough to step aside as the steamroller approaches …
Sorry POTUS the Chicago Bulls season is over.
Since congress is back and we have a *news* void looks like this weeks faux outrage coverage will encompass the rest of the week……
A sitting GOP congressman/former FBI agent just got indicted on 20 counts of federal crimes…….and was not forced to resign…..how many stories?
The WHCD will be Saturday night May 3rd.
In addition to the torture of the two prisoners tonight, what I picture are the faces of the Lockett and Warner families when they heard about the botched executions. Picture if it were your relative or mine involved. Unbelievable.
OK I need to be uplifted……… Clippers game is about to tip off on TNT for those interested.
To clean my mental palate before signing out for the night
Lovely. This is what Home On The Range should look like.

Our local NBC channel is doing a good job on the awful execution story. A local reporter was one of the eyewitnesses. She put up a minute by minute diary of the actions and reactions of the victim. She looked totally stunned, and really had a hard time reporting.
This may have a profound effect on the state. I pray so.
I am glad that this is becoming national story.
Ok all, I have a piece on the death penalty coming up tomorrow.
Our country has some more growing pains that it needs to face. LL I know you will put this in perspective and have you historical take on this subject. LL our master wordsmith.
Hasn’t US had more than 200 years to grow up?
India is thousands of years old, and it still has the death penalty.
No, India is 67 years old. And no. of people actually killed by the state is in single digits.
Looking forward to reading it LL.

I have been too busy to post but lurking almost everyday although just to look at photos and headlines most of the time, just checking in to wish everyone who celebrated during April many blessings (I celebrated on the 15th) and received my first age pension check, recovering from a bad cold didnt eat anything solid from Friday until yesterday afternoon, cold refuses to move but the horrible feeling has left. Off to another busy day at work, everyone have a great day especially GoBrooklyn, BTs and anyone feeling under the weather, will be busy at work until at least next Friday, will continue to enjoy the pictures and headlines, will eat some leftover birthday cake and a sip of rum to all April celebrants when I feel up to it again. Have a lovely day all
Anjo, happy belated birthday. Hope you feel better soon. Let us all know when you feel up to the leftover cake. We’ll all share.
