LA Times: Obamacare has led to health coverage for millions more people

At least 9.5 million previously uninsured people have gotten health insurance since Obamacare started, surveys and reports show.

President Obama’s healthcare law, despite a rocky rollout and determined opposition from critics, already has spurred the largest expansion in health coverage in America in half a century, national surveys and enrollment data show.

As the law’s initial enrollment period closes, at least 9.5 million previously uninsured people have gained coverage. Some have done so through marketplaces created by the law, some through other private insurance and others through Medicaid, which has expanded under the law in about half the states.

Huffington Post: Obamacare Success Story: Man With HIV Thought He’d Be ‘Dead Within 6 Months,’ Now Has Awesome, Cheaper Insurance

Dan is a gay man from Michigan who called my radio program on SiriusXM Progress on Oct. 23. He sounded frantic. He’d received one of the infamous cancellation letters from his insurance company, he said.

.”… I am going to be one of the people who are going to be screwed by Obamacare. And I really support the president….”

…. Last week Dan called back again … he just kept looking until he found his perfect policy on the Michigan exchange.

… Dan was paying $1,485 per month for his old plan with the $1,000 deductible. His new plan under Obamacare, which includes coverage not only for all his prescriptions but for dental and vision – which his old plan did not – is costing him over $500 less per month, at a total cost of $914, with the same deductible. That’s not to mention that he got it with the pre-existing condition of HIV…..”

.”… I want to say to all your listeners: I was terribly wrong,” he said. “Now I’m going to push myself as a huge Obamacare success story. I’m bragging it to everyone.”

WH.gov: Photos: This is What an #ACASurge Looks Like

The line started forming at 5 a.m. in front of an enrollment center in Miami — where trained workers have signed up 25,000 of their fellow Floridians since November. It was standing-room-only at a center in Houston yesterday.

The final deadline to get covered in 2014 is in just two days, and Americans are literally lining up at grassroots events across the country to make sure they’re covered.

This is what momentum looks like.

Take a look at some of the photos folks are sending in from events around the country…

Paul Krugman: The ACA Surge Blackout

… I’m somewhat amazed by what amounts to a de facto blackout by major news media on a developing story that’s really obvious if you read the invaluable Charles Gaba, or even the White House blog: a huge surge in Obamacare enrollments in the final days of the signup period….

…. where I think this does matter is that it shows a persistent slant in much reporting toward emphasizing the negatives about health reform. The website woes were, and deserved to be, a big story; the quite amazing comeback somehow doesn’t fit the preferred narrative….

Ashwani Talk: The Final Countdown

…. Thanks to this law, I won’t have to worry.

Thanks to this law, 129 million can’t be denied coverage due to a preexisting condition.

Thanks to this law, 3 million young adults can stay on their parents’ plans until 26.

Thanks to this law, 6 million people are covered for the first time in their lives.

Thanks to this law, insurers must spent 80% of your premiums on actual care.

….[Today] is the deadline for open enrollment. There’s no reason not to sign up, or at least take the time to view all the options.

…. If you’re anything like me or my family, I can ensure you that it’s the right thing to do, and the best time to support it. Laws like this do not come around that often. But when they do, we all need to stand together.

Steve Benen: GOP struggles with Obamacare surge

As much of the country has probably heard, today marks the end of the open-enrollment period in the Affordable Care Act, and consumers who don’t get coverage are likely to face a tax penalty. ACA proponents have long predicted there’d be an 11th-hour surge in folks signing up, and right now, those predictions are holding up nicely.

…. Congressional Republicans, who are making no effort to hide the fact they’re rooting against the U.S. health care system, aren’t taking the news well.

… “I don’t think it means anything. … I think they’re cooking the books on this,” said Sen. John Barrasso on “Fox News Sunday.”

Even by GOP standards, this was a rather extraordinary moment. A member of the Senate Republican leadership – indeed, the chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee – went on national television to accuse the White House of perpetrating a fraud based on nothing but his own hopes.

Jonathan Cohn: That Good News on Obamacare? Republicans Insist It’s Not Real

Americans are signing up for the Affordable Care Act. And they appear to be doing so in really big numbers. As of the latest official update, last week, more than 6 million people had selected a private insurance plan through one of Obamacare’s new state marketplaces. But that was before a weekend of huge traffic to healthcare.gov and state-run websites, record call volume to telephone help centers, and queues outside outreach offices in California and even Texas. Charles Gaba, the Michigan-based analyst who runs the website ACASignups.net, now projects that 6.72 million people will sign up for private insurance by the time open enrollment ends.

… Republicans are challenging the statistics — primarily, by suggesting that most of the people getting insurance already had coverage. Some, like Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, say the administration is “cooking the books.” Others, like Senator Ted Cruz, say that the number of people without insurance is actually rising.

Sorry, but that’s nonsense….

ThinkProgress: This State Is Quietly Becoming One Of The Worst For Women’s Health (And No, It’s Not Texas)

Thanks to the high-profile battle over new abortion restrictions in Texas this past summer, the national media typically associates the Lone Star State with harsh abortion laws. The dire situation in Texas is certainly alarming for reproductive rights activists — but it’s hardly the only state where women’s access to abortion is under siege.

Ohio has recently dramatically tightened its restrictions on abortion, and the number of clinics in the state is dwindling. State lawmakers haven’t shown any signs of ceasing their politically-motivated attacks on reproductive health care. Yet unlike Texas, Ohio women’s fights haven’t garnered much widespread attention.

Jim Stuart: The Obama Doctrine

Nancy LeTourneau was the first to frame what the President said in this big policy speech last Wednesday in Brussels, Belgium as an Obama Doctrine. I believe this framing is very appropriate…

…. In a nuclear age, military conflict between the great powers is unthinkable. So what happens when a great power wants to eat up its neighbor? Are we pretty much helpless? Until now, the answer was pretty much – Yes. Nobody could stop us from invading Iraq, and nobody did. Nobody could stop NATO from bombing Kosovo, and nobody did. So Putin says to himself, “Since the US won’t use military force, no one can stop us from invading the Crimea, and probably the Ukraine, and nobody will.” Until Obama did.

…. This may take a week, a month, a year, or more. But starting with Wednesday’s speech, we are watching our President lead us …. He is leading the world in establishing certain norms that say all of us have value; that we all deserve to be heard; and that the more powerful should not be allowed to run roughshod over us.

These are norms worth fighting for.

I have a question for everyone. I work in a small business office that provides coverage for it’s employees. When our renewal comes up
they want to raise our monthly premium from 3600 to 6000!! How can they get away with this?

                Rate Review

Rate Review helps protect you from unreasonable rate increases. Insurance companies must now publicly justify any rate increase of 10% or more before raising your premium. This does not apply to grandfathered plans.

                80/20 Rule

The 80/20 Rule generally requires insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money they take in on premiums on your health care and quality improvement activities instead of administrative, overhead, and marketing costs.

The 80/20 rule is sometimes known as Medical Loss Ratio, or MLR. If an insurance company uses 80 cents out of every premium dollar to pay for your medical claims and activities that improve the quality of care, the company has a Medical Loss Ratio of 80%.

Insurance companies selling to large groups (usually more than 50 employees) must spend at least 85% of premiums on care and quality improvement.

If your insurance company doesn’t meet these requirements, you’ll get a rebate from your premiums.

Use this tool to learn more about your insurance company and 80/20 rebates.

Great R&S for this great big day at TOD. Thank you, Chips.

Here’s how I plan to overcome any frustration I feel about the disgraceful coverage or lack thereof about the ACA today:

I will remind my self of how POTUS, in the face of thetroubled early rollout, reminded us that Obamacare will succeed because each person covered will talk about it to their friends, family, neighbors, co-workers. So it doesn’t matter what Upchuck the Toad has to say.

Similarly, we all can count, so Senator John the emBarrassement will have as much reality as Karl (the Kounter) Rove had in Ohio.

          Hey donna dem 4 Obama,

Yes indeed. I was looking for some happy news regarding Obamacare today-crazy me. Just once, why can’t they give President Obama credit for his work? It angers me to no end. Was watching GMA this morning; salivating over pictures of Prince Williams, his wife, baby and the dog.

President Obama and Mrs. Obama represents “this country” nothing less than 1st class, and they show pictures of fake birth certificates, and a picture of the President with a bone in his nose over and over to appease the repukes.

I would like to use “your rant” from this morning to send to my Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz if it’s okay with you.

I am going to send some e-mails to the networks today to work off the frustration.

            Hey, Cindy, you must have a generous soul and an optimistic spirit to keep watching this sham reporting, thinking some day, one day, they will see, recognize and report the truth. They will not. The old adage: If not Now, When? Applies here. I’m sure many of us are beginning to realize with the numbers tipping the scale, and very likely to be low estimates so far, the silver (even gold) lining to this cloud of disinformation is the many millions who are now covered, knowing what they know to be real and true, will watch, listen and finally know they have been lied to and misled. Those millions may choose to speak up, to share what they now know, and to waken those around them. They may also choose to #clickoff, or seek other sources of information they can trust more. It takes some practice to change our teepee viewing habits, but once you have weaned yourself from the assault to your fine spirit and intelligence, as DD4O is suggesting, I guarantee you will feel better and better all the time! I speak from personal experience, it has been many years now since I’ve watched MSM, even left off watching PBS, as I felt there was more opinion than fact being presented. It’s a freedom like none other. Try it, you’ll like it!! {{{{{Cindy}}}}}

    • 41 japa21
      March 31, 2014 at 10:45 am

Are the Dems silent, or is the MSM not allowing them to speak out? Hard for anyone to go on MSNBC or anywhere else and tell the truth if those places won’t let them be there.

        March 31, 2014 at 10:55 am

I don’t think they can keep them off. I get the sense that Dems just don’t make a push to be on those shows because they are just not very good at messaging. If they were not being allowed to voice their opinion they have many options like go on radio and twitter and facebook and call out the media for silencing them. They don’t, which leads me to believe that they make very little concerted effort to be there. It’s just not the Dems thing. Whereas the Repubs eat this stuff up!

Fantastic R&S Chips on a day that we are all celebrating the fact that millions of our fellow citizens have the peace of mind from having affordable, high quality health insurance irrespective of their age, prior medical history & income.

The brutal force by which the #KOCHSTERS are attacking those citizens – denial of food, livable wages, their right to vote, health care, education, and more – is all the evidence we need to make 4 Nov 2014 the highest turnout election in American history. Nothing less can stop the plutocrats from ravaging America and the vast majority of us.

Health care expenditures will indeed go up. BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED HEALTH CARE THAT WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO THEM UNTIL ACA.

Effing sociopaths, every one of them.

Am I crazy? Didn’t PBO repeatedly talk about the ‘uninsured and UNDER-insured?’ Sure, there were lots of people paying for crappy insurance, but now insurance has to actually cover stuff and they can’t cancel you because you actually use what you paid premiums for.

I’m ready to ‘cook the books’. You with me?

EVERY American with insurance benefits from ACA. Absolutely EVERYONE: no more lifetime caps, no more pre-existing conditions, no co-pays on basic screenings and wellness, insurance companies have to spend 80% of premiums on YOU and your health care.

For seniors: closing of donut hole, free screenings.

Hospitals no longer rewarded for readmitting you due to their mistakes. Better health care outcomes for EVERYONE.

So what is that? about 250 million Americans who are availing themselves of ACA.

    Spread the word!

JER, thank you for posting that video. I cried so much watching it. There is a special place in hell for people like Rick Perry and every other Republican governor from red states that are making it impossible for people to enroll for health insurance because of their refusal to expand medicaid.

So……I’ve read all the posts about the poor messaging from the DNC, and I agree. I decided to write the President. I told him I am a loyal Democrat, but the DNC’s messaging lacks. The Republicans get their story out first and that is why we are trailing. I said DWS is a nice lady, but we need someone as chair who is aggressive and will get out in front of the situations. I suggested Howard Dean or Paul Begala. Either one of those is assertive, and has connections with networks. Others might not like those suggestions, but I think we need to contact people and make the suggestion to get a more assertive DNC chair. We have seven months, and it is make or break time. If there is someone else I should contact, I welcome the suggestions.
I suggest we all contact whoever is in the right place and suggest a stronger, more vocal, more assertive DNC chair. DWS has too much to do being a Rep and running for re-election to give the attention and energy necessary to this important job. We need someone whose SOLE job is the DNC.

“The moment went unnoticed by much of the world’s media, but it underlined the long-standing constructive relationship that has existed between Ukraine’s Jews and Ukrainians, an alliance that has only strengthened since last month’s downfall of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

At a recent wreath-laying ceremony in Kiev commemorating the bicentennial of the birth of Ukraine’s bard, Taras Shevchenko, a crowd of several thousand abruptly started cheering, “Long live the Jews! Long live Israel!” The chant was in honour of Rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman, who the day before had individually blessed ten Ukrainians who were critically wounded by pro-Yanukovych forces during last month’s protest near Kiev’s Maidan before being airlifted to Israel for treatment. Many at the ceremony eagerly hugged the rabbi and shook his hand.”
