ThinkProgress: Uninsurance Rate Falls As Millions Sign Up For Obamacare, Survey Finds

The U.S. uninsurance rate has hit another five-year low as Americans continue enrolling in health coverage during Obamacare’s first open enrollment period, according to a new Gallup survey. All told, the uninsurance rate in the first three months of 2014 stood at 15.9 percent, compared to 17.1 percent in the last quarter of 2013 — and the largest drops in uninsurance occurred among African Americans and lower-income people, who are among the most likely to benefit from the ACA’s financial assistance.

“The uninsured rate for almost every major demographic group has dropped in 2014 so far,” wrote the Gallup researchers. “The percentage of uninsured Americans with an annual household income of less than $36,000 has dropped the most — by 2.8 percentage points — to 27.9% since the fourth quarter of 2013, while the percentage of uninsured blacks has fallen 2.6 points to 18.3%.

ThinkProgress: Bush’s Defense Secretary Destroys GOP Talking Points Against Obama’s Handling Of Crimea

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates pushed back on Sunday against conservatives who’ve blamed President Obama’s “weak” foreign policy for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Crimea.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Gates dismissed arguments that Obama’s handling of the conflict in Syria or his efforts to trim the defense budget emboldened Putin, arguing that the Russian president also invaded Georgia during the George W. Bush administration.

“My own view is, after all, Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bush was president. Nobody ever accused George W. Bush of being weak or unwilling to use military force”….

Steve Benen: Presidential breaks aren’t ‘startling’

President Obama occasionally takes a breather because, well, humans in stressful jobs sometimes need a break. For some reason, Republicans seem to find this fascinating….

…. all of this handwringing wouldn’t be quite so annoying if Republicans weren’t conveniently ignoring the president’s immediate predecessor.

Every president chooses to spend some time away from the White House, but some take more time than others. Ronald Reagan, for example, set the record for most vacation days for a sitting president – a record that stood until George W. Bush shattered Reagan’s seemingly unbreakable benchmark.

Obama practically lives in the Oval Office compared to the last couple of two-term Republican presidents.

Indeed, Bush at times seemed preoccupied with not going to work…..

TPM: Ouch! Kerry Roasts CNN With Brutal Joke

It seems everyone is having fun at CNN’s expense these days. On Saturday, it was John Kerry’s turn.

Yes, the secretary of state couldn’t resist poking fun at CNN’s ratings woes when he delivered remarks at the annual Gridiron Club dinner.

The set-up for Kerry’s punch line: an allusion to a pretty ridiculous question about his 2016 ambitions that came up during an interview with the cable news channel last month.

“I am out of politics — and based on the ratings, so is CNN,” Kerry said….

Michael Hiltzik: Cultural production of ignorance provides rich field for study

Robert Proctor doesn’t think ignorance is bliss. He thinks that what you don’t know can hurt you. And that there’s more ignorance around than there used to be, and that its purveyors have gotten much better at filling our heads with nonsense.

Proctor, a professor of the history of science at Stanford, is one of the world’s leading experts in agnotology, a neologism signifying the study of the cultural production of ignorance. It’s a rich field, especially today when whole industries devote themselves to sowing public misinformation and doubt about their products and activities.

The tobacco industry was a pioneer at this. Its goal was to erode public acceptance of the scientifically proven links between smoking and disease …. It’s also echoed by vaccination opponents and by climate change deniers.

And all those fabricated Obamacare horror stories wholesaled by Republican and conservative opponents of the Affordable Care Act and their aiders and abetters in the right-wing press? Their purpose is to sow doubt about the entire project of healthcare reform…

Good Monday morning TODville!!! It is 36 and raining in Montana. We have now had a week of above freezing temp. Still have piles of snow but things are flooding. It is crazy. Hear Chicago is to have more snow. Stay safe everyone.

So glad the POTUS and FLOTUS had some fun in the sun over the weekend. Know the President talked on the phone but hopefully some time in there he had some fun.

I so enjoyed Cosmos last night. Looking forward to the whole series.

Has there been anymore news about the missing plane? This is so weird not to hear anything. How can a plane just disappear?

    Have a great day!

A blessed and glorious morning to everyone! Today is the best day of the year because it is my birthday. I’m off from work so I’m heading to the beach to unwind. I’m extending an invitation to the entire TOD family to join me.

It is also a wonderful time for us here in Montserrat because we are having a week of activities leading up to March 17th to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Last year, I provided some background information on why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. To those with Irish connections, perhaps one day, you can visit the “Other Emerald Isle”.

Oy… The only other place I relish the comments is Pierce’s, and boy howdy was it ever taken over by the flying monkeys this weekend, specifically his CPAC post on Palin. The knuckles they are a draggin’ looowww. Reminds me yet again what Chips and Nerdy et al surely have to machete themselves through each day to keep this place so friendly. Thanks x infinity x more infinity.

High School Wrestler Brings Crowd to Tears in Classy Move After Loss

Malik Stewart, a Minnesota high school wrestler, shows the crowd the true definition of a champion.

    By: Stephen A. Crockett Jr.

    Posted: March 10 2014 7:50 AM

A Minnesota high school wrestler showed the crowd the true meaning of a champion after a tough loss in the state championship match, news station KARE 11 reports.

After losing the title to Mitchell McKee, Malik Stewart went over and embraced McKee’s father, Steve, who is battling terminal cancer.

“I got a little teary because I lost the match, and I knew the hard times he was going through,” Malik told the news station.

“The crowd went wild and I heard a couple people say after I did it, that was pretty classy, but I just did it straight from the heart.”

Malik knew the enormity and the importance of Mitchell McKee’s victory, who had vowed to win a state championship to honor his father. Malik lost his father to a heart attack when he was only 7.

I was watching this program on tv Saturday night and it was about a fiction first family who happen to be black, and the father was talking about the things he missed out on teaching his kids because he was President of the United States. And I right away thought of President Obama, and teaching Malia how to drive. She’s turning 16 in July and she might not be able to drive on her own till they leave the WH, but I’m sure she want to learn to drive and even get her license. Maybe driver’s education you think.

  39. March 10, 2014 at 1:54 pm

Howdy all you O’s!!! What a great getting up day in the TOD universe, eh?

It’s to be 56 degrees today in my neck of the woods. This is the last day of #1 and grandson’s surprise visit from No. Dakota, so we’re going outside to play in this balmy weather.

The forecast calls for snow Tuesday and Wednesday, but I’ve decided that I’m not shoveling anymore this year, until at least November. It can snow ’til Memorial Day and the shovel will be AWOL.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium and star of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources Sunday to talk about the show and media treatment of science in general. Tyson spoke of the innate hypocrisy of people rejecting modern science while embracing the very best of scientific discovery “that we so take for granted today,” and without it, “we will just regress back into the cave.”

Stelter referenced his own recent commentary about how the media should not be giving equal time to anti-science views, and asked Tyson what he believes the media’s responsibility on this issue should be. Tyson said the media shouldn’t be in the business of giving “equal time to the flat-earthers.”

“Science is not there for you to cherry-pick. You know, I said this once and it’s gotten a lot of Internet play, I said the good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it. All right? I guess you can decide whether or not to believe in it, but that doesn’t change the reality of an emergent scientific truth.”
