NoChildLeftBehind—-Thank you for answering me on the last thread. Topic—Big yawn greeting Rachel’s documentary.
I certainly did not know that an invasion of Iraq was planned long before 9/11. Maybe others knew that. I didn’t.

On Afghanistan—One pretext was denying Al Queda safe havens. Pretty ridiculous since AQ has training camps all over. Yemen Somalia Mali., for example. Are we invading those countries?

I believe Bob Gates when he says that PBO wants to do exactly what he campainged on which is get us out of Afghanistan ASAP. Why we actually are there is still unclear to me. Opium is best guess. Anyone else have any idea on why are we in Afghanistan?

Vicky, there might be another simple answer: it is easy to invade, but after destabilizing the country, it is difficult to pack up and go, particularly when the world is watching you.

      Hi Vicki,

Regarding GWB and Cheney’s plans to invade Iraq – an excellent source is GWB’s Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill. Just Google his name + Iraq and you’ll find articles, 60 Minutes interview, etc. Presume Rachel Maddow covered it. I haven’t seen her program and likely won’t since it’s unlikely she’s uncovered anything I don’t know about GWB’s illegal act of aggression and occupation. One of the many downsides for the US and the world, of course, is how Putin and his flunkies are able to leverage GWB’s crimes as justification for their own – in Georgia, in Crimea (Ukraine).

As to Afghanistan, we had absolutely no reason or justification to occupy the country. Had GWB focused on getting bin Laden it’s likely bin Laden would have been dead at Tora Bora. President Obama has persisted, imo, for one reason. Americans have paid an enormous price for GWB’s prolonged failure in Afghanistan and PBO truly wanted the people of Afghanistan to have the opportunity to emerge as a sustainable democracy. The only ‘conspiracy theory’ I’ve ever heard that had an ounce of credibility to it has to do with natural gas pipelines from the Caspian Sea being more directly routed to Pakistan via Turkmenistan and Afghanistan as to reach Pakistani ports on the Arabian Sea rather than routing them through Iran which of course a GWB+Chenney would have had a rather hard time negotiating. Building and operating those pipelines would be just what Mr Hadliburton, Deadeye Dick Cheney, could easily be seen as having considerable interest. And, had a McCain or a Romney been elected President it would not be far fetched to think we’d be in Afghanistan & Iraq indefinitely for that type of reason.

I thought what Rachel did was confirm what most of us knew, with documentation. She is careful to document what she does, which as an academic I appreciate.
Yes, we are still suffering the results of GWB’s horrible adventure and lies…….I firmly believe Putin thought he could invade Ukraine with impunity because he didn’t know PBO could handle more than one thing at a time. GWB did nothing when he invaded Georgia, so he assumed with all going on in the world, PBO would sit back and say “Oh, that’s awful.” and go on about his other jobs. He needs to learn that PBO can handle more than one thing at a time, and will pressure Putin.
What has made me angry are the Americans castigating Kerry and PBO for denouncing and working against this illegal invasion after what Bush did in Iraq…..trying to equate one administration with another. Another example of the ashes of Bush and Cheney.

I knew nothing of the pre 9/11 planning to get the Iraq oil – silly me – yet again I gave the GOP the benefit of the doubt & simply thought they took the opportunity to take the oil (that in itself was disgusting). I also didn’t realize Tony Blair was encouraged by the idea of getting the oil. I give Blair equal blame with Bush for the invasion of Iraq – without the UK there would have been no invasion.

Thanks to all of you….Bobfr,Carolynn, LL and 99ts for discussing this with me.
Bob, Rachel exposed plans to go into Iraq before 9/11. This was shocking to me.
From your comment it seems you already knew this.

I think that was news to many of us Vicki – at the time I didn’t believe the WMD defense – but it NEVER occurred to me it was an oil war that had been looking for an excuse ever since the election was given to GWB.

I thought the doco from Rachel was well researched, well presented – but it will receive less notice from the media than the rants of anyone at CPAC – regardless as to how much they lie and refuse to research anything.

“oil war looking for an excuse” perfect summation, 99

            • March 7, 2014 at 11:36 pm

Hi 99, While I watched the doc last night, I remarked to you that I was sick to my stomach. It was late in the hour, and after not learning anything terribly new, I realized the whole GWB admin. was actually getting a great pass – look at all we did to keep your gas prices low!
There was very little reported on the staggering loss, the colossal high price that was paid for this, and no detailed reporting on the staggering profits that Cheney et al now bathe in. /still sick to my stomach.

“look at all we did to keep your gas prices low” – sad reflection on a lifestyle and an administration that thought forcing another country to sell oil at a US approved price was justification for the death of over 100,000 Iraq citizens. These folks believe in free enterprise – for us, but not for you.

The only good thing – none of them can leave the US without the protection of the current President – they would be arrested.

Bobfr, On the pipeline issue, I thought that theory had some credibility as it related to our good relations with India. When India was given the new administration’s first state dinner the idea of being in Afghanistan to provide gas to India made some sense.
Who knows if we’ll ever know the truth?

Really awesome photos——hardly any evidence of an ‘enthusiasm gap’. Ha! Those gals look beyond tickled pink to be greeting the POTUS! In fact that whole audience looks overflowing with love for our president. I just don’t know if I can believe FOXNews any more—:)–the evidence right before my very eyes just wipes out everything they’ve been trying to tell me about loss of popularity. Everywhere he goes.

Why does the entire U.S. news media, even the “friendlies”, feel the need to cover every minute, every speaker at CPAC? I can never figure that out—–just breathless reports as if this mtg. of the kooky kooknuts was the biggest thing to ever happen and deserves wall to wall coverage?
And why don’t the Dems have a version of CPAC, so we can at least get some equal media attention?
Would just get ignored because too sane?

Shorter answer Dotster3, the Media today has abdicated their role………as the 4th Estate……They are no longer in the business of informing the public. Once a FL Fox affiliate won the rights to LIE in 2002……..that was as the Iraq war was fast approaching, the Jingoistic Cheering for the run-up to the Iraq war in 2003 was alarming. Ever since then, issues most Americans care for are hardly center stage. But if the TBGOPers skip a breath, it is 24/7 wall to wall coverage.

This was what I found so refreshing with Steve K on Saturday mornings – he asks each panelist a question, lets them answer & then goes to the next question – regardless as to how stupid (in some cases) is the answer. The next panelist usually takes down any stupid responses.

The FBI has launched an investigation of the Corrections Corporation of America over the company’s running of an Idaho prison with a reputation so violent that inmates dubbed it “Gladiator School.”

The Nashville, Tenn.-based CCA has operated Idaho’s largest prison for more than a decade, but last year, CCA officials acknowledged it had understaffed the Idaho Correctional Center by thousands of hours in violation of the state contract. CCA also said employees falsified reports to cover up the vacancies. The announcement came after an Associated Press investigation showed CCA sometimes listed guards as working 48 hours straight to meet minimum staffing requirements.

The Idaho State Police was asked to investigate the company last year but didn’t, until amid increasing political pressure, the governor ordered the agency to do so last month. Democratic state lawmakers asked the FBI to take up the case last month.

    Private prison. Act surprised.

    Someone please help educate me…….

Troll to me means a nuisance, a person who is not searching for truth, a pest more or less who is bent on irritating another, etc.

The airline told NBC News that a search-and-rescue mission was under way for Flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200, and that relatives of those on board were being notified.

The flight from Kuala Lumpur, carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members, had been scheduled to land at 6:30 a.m. in Beijing (5:30 p.m. ET Friday). But Subang Air Traffic Control in Malaysia reported that it lost contact at 2:40 a.m. (1:40 p.m. ET Friday).

“Vranyo is a Russian word for lying — a special form of lying. I learned of it in a Leningrad nursery school from Aunt Polya, who was in charge of the kitchen and who wasn’t really my aunt. She loomed over us with a pitcher of warm milk and a tray with slices of buttered bread that had absorbed all the rancid smells of the kitchen, watching closely to make sure we ate and drank everything. We all knew she was watching us, she knew that we knew and we knew she knew that we knew. She gave us surprise glances, and we chewed diligently, pretending we didn’t expect her to look. We all played the game: my sister played it at school, and my parents played it at work. All of us pretended, the watchers and the watched.”

Lessons from the past, and an October 2011 essay everyone in the world should read – and then decide if they want to pretend they don’t smell the lies, or ….
