An Update or Two

The Day’s Must-Read:

Michael Cohen: Don’t listen to Obama’s Ukraine critics: he’s not ‘losing’ – and it’s not his fight

The ‘do something’ pundits rear their heads. Just like they did on Iraq, Afghanistan and every other crisis of US ‘credibility’

In the days since Vladimir Putin sent Russian troops into the Crimea, it has been amateur hour back in Washington.

I don’t mean Barack Obama. He’s doing pretty much everything he can, with what are a very limited set of policy options at his disposal. No, I’m talking about the people who won’t stop weighing in on Obama’s lack of “action” in the Ukraine. Indeed, the sea of foreign policy punditry – already shark-infested – has reached new lows in fear-mongering, exaggerated doom-saying and a stunning inability to place global events in any rational historical context.

This would be a useful moment for Americans to have informed reporters, scholars and leaders explaining a crisis rapidly unfolding half a world away. Instead, we’ve already got all the usual suspect arguments….

Hey Chips Chica – how is your not so little guy?

        • March 3, 2014 at 8:36 pm

He’s a bit stressed at the moment Nospin, he stole a lemon from the kitchen, dashed in to the garden with it, bit it, freaked, and spent the next 30 minutes barking at it. It’s hard being a puppy.

/frowning/ FTR, Chips Chica, my doggie-nephew did NOT steal a lemon, and I resent your saying he did. This is one way rumours get started. You cannot steal what belongs to you, and everything in that house that belongs to his mother, is his! DO be careful what you say about Danny-O, or we may have to take you to court for libel.

Yo, Danny-O, think what we could do with the money won! 😀 😀 Let me know if she does this defamation thingy again. We could be rich -ish!

I am in a constant meditative space of trying to keep my nerves at a calm display as I go into the evening preparing for the three hour dental procedure, nospin. You know how the elements of doubt, fear, and anxiousness all will try to creep into the space that is being created to get me through tomorrow by a power that is one of wholeness and steadiness. I am keeping lovely music, beautiful candles, and much prayer in my space this evening.

Thank you so much for asking, nospin. You all are so supportive and so loving, and I am so grateful. Please remember me in your thoughts tomorrow. I am asking for wisdom, strength, and to be grateful for a great dentist and his staff. It is all in my space., but my loving brother spoke with me yesterday with such loving calmness concerning my mood. He has a calming spirit that I so love.

I hope all is fine with you and your family. Be gentle in your space as well and take good care to pamper yourself and enjoy your space.HZ

HZ……I will certainly keep you in my thoughts tomorrow as you go through your dental work. I had extensive dental (gum) work done about three years ago. I was not put to sleep for the procedures, but he of course gave me great numbing and pain meds, and interestingly put a towel over my eyes. He said it was so that nothing dropped on my face, and that was good, but I found that with the towel over my eyes, then closing my eyes, I was able to keep a distance, as you say, keep a space around me that protected me somehow. I recommend the towel covering the eyes. You can be alone and away under that covering.
Blessings on you and take care of yourself afterwards. Dental work affects our entire bodily system.

      http://www.businessinsider.com/samantha-power-russia-ukraine-un-security-council-2014-3

Remarks by Ambassador Samantha Power, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, at a UN Security Council Meeting on Ukraine, March 3, 2014

      Samantha Power
U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations
      New York, NY
      March 3, 2014

      AS DELIVERED

Thank you, Madam President. In response to my Russian colleague’s comments, I’d just like to make a couple points. First, I’d like to address his point about to the legitimacy of President Yanukovych, and his point about the February 21 agreement, which he has made several times.

To be clear, we commend the work done by France, Germany, and Poland to mediate and to negotiate that agreement with Russia very much in observance, and we would have been prepared to support the completion of that agreement. Under its terms, President Yanukovych had 24 hours to sign the first piece of action pursued in the Rada – the changing of the constitution pursuant to the February 21 agreement. Not only did President Yanukovych not sign it, but as my Russian colleague reminds us, he left the city. Indeed, he fled the city; he packed up himself and his family, and he left the seat of the presidency vacant for two days while his country was in crisis. He also left vast evidence of corruption, vast evidence of the amounts that he had stolen from the Ukrainian people, and in that context, with 371 votes, the democratically-elected Rada voted Yanukovych out of office, with his own party turning against him. That’s the history.

But to the present, what we’ve heard today, is – with the exception of one member of the Security Council, the Russian Federation – we have heard overwhelming support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and for peaceful dialogue. There are so many options available to Russia to safeguard the rights of ethnic Russians and to address the concerns that have been raised, so many options short of military action. So the very simple questions for Russia today are: Why not support international mediation? Why isn’t that part of your remarks today? Why not support an observer mission? Why not engage directly with the Ukrainian authorities who want to resolve this crisis peacefully? Why not pull back your forces instead of sending more? Why not? When military intervention, in the face of a crisis like this, is the first resort, it is hard to avoid concluding that Russia does not want peace and does not want a diplomatic solution. Why choose military action when the consequences could be devastating? Only someone who fears the truth would be fearful of monitors who are deployed for the specific purpose of identifying and reporting the truth. That is all, Madam President.

U.S. suspends trade, investment talks with Russia over Ukraine
    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ukraine-russia-crisis-20140303,0,4752010.story

The United States has put trade and investment talks with Russia on hold as a rebuke for Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, a U.S. official said on Monday.

“We have suspended upcoming bilateral trade and investment engagement with the government of Russia that were part of a move toward deeper commercial and trade ties,” a spokesman for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said.

President Obama said Russia has violated international law in its military intervention in Ukraine and said the U.S. government has warned it will look at a series of economic and diplomatic sanctions that would isolate Moscow.

    Good evening TOD family,

I do hope that everyone is having a pleasant evening. Walked through the doors turned on the TV for updates; should have known better.

Hoodrats repukes dancing across the networks blaming President Obama because he has to think things over; Putin says something and he does it immediately, so says Giuliani.

Well, Giuliani…..if I could put the pointed toe of my heels in the part of your behind where the sun doesn’t shine, I can assure you, you would never walk again or do anything else with that part of your anatomy. These guys act as though they are ready to eat Putin’s poop. What is wrong with the President “thinking things through” first? It tells me; this is what a “GREAT LEADER” is suppose to do-look at all of the outcomes.

These hoodrats repukes are nothing more than war mongering murderers, and I wish that they would go and fight or send their own kids to fight. They are always siding with the opposition against President Obama; parading on TV trying to embarrass him, Snowden is their hero and Putin poop is their God. I say; pack up your ____, and get the hell out of here and go where your heart is at…….see you, don’t want to be you.

Okay….I am sorry, had to get it out of my system. I just get upset, no matter what President Obama is doing, these haters are always out there trying to start a fire.

4 Reasons Putin Is Already Losing in Ukraine

As Russia’s Ukraine power play reaches boiling point in Crimea, there are clear signs a Russian invasion may be a disaster for its architect, President Vladimir Putin
    http://world.time.com/2014/03/03/putin-ukraine-crimea-russia/#ixzz2uxRzwIkc

    For starters:

“At home, this intervention looks to be the one of the most unpopular decisions Putin has ever made. The Kremlin’s own pollster released a survey on Monday that showed 73% of Russians reject it. In phrasing its question posed in early February to 1600 respondents across the country, the state-funded sociologists at WCIOM were clearly trying to get as much support for the intervention as possible: “Should Russia react to the overthrow of the legally elected authorities in Ukraine?” they asked. Only 15% said yes – hardly a national consensus.”

    ….

    Please proceed #TzarVlado

    #TrustBarack … or GET ROLLED ….

      March 3, 2014 at 9:48 pm

As spoken by the pundits – who stupidly think it shows strength – Putin acts first & then looks at the consequences. The US saw the impact of this after 9/11 – how quickly those who praise Putin forget the most recent of history.

Putin looks like a Statesman? He is running circles around the President? Putin is schooling President Obama? Putin is teaching the President how to be a leader? Dr. Maddow just played these comments from Graham, Rubio and others.

What we all need to try to do is to continue what we’re doing. Pay attention to those we trust who are getting the word out, and pass it along to others. And keep letting our President and Vice President and those in the administration – who are stepping up on our behalf – know that we have their backs.

I’ve decided to stop listening to pundits and political hacks, who mean nothing in the grand scheme. None of them have an ounce of experience being President. None of them will ever be President Barack Obama.

But I definitely believe in calling all of them out, whenever I hear they are using the same old crap arguments, lies, and slanderous remarks. Go for it!

JOB, this is wise advice. Stop listening to pundits and trust in our president. I got burned out today with all the ugly, treasonous statements coming from the media and the GOP and had to pull back for my own mental and physical health. Every single time the treasonous GOP and their media lackeys go into a “hair on fire,” blame Obama mode, they are shamed and silenced within a week or two. The world is responding beautifully to the US calls for collaborative sanctions and pressure on Putin and this is what will make the difference in time. Every pundit and GOP moron shooting of his/her mouth today share one thing in common. They know nothing and have zero power.

I tried to make it as simple as I possibly could. Those ‘pipelines’ are ‘two way’ – one direction, gas; the other direction, CASH. What #TzarVlado has done over the past 96 hours is catalyze a whole bunch of folk to begin seeking alternative sources (of which, several exist). Russia makes nothing worth purchasing. Without CASH FOR GAS they don’t have squat of an economy. The world’s markets reminded them of that fact today, and I guarantee if they don’t stop with their acts of war, they’re going to regret it for decades even if a single shot isn’t fired.

Fewer crop species are feeding the world than 50 years ago – raising concerns about the resilience of the global food system, a study has shown.

The authors warned a loss of diversity meant more people were dependent on key crops, leaving them more exposed to harvest failures.

Higher consumption of energy-dense crops could also contribute to a global rise in heart disease and diabetes, they added.

The findings appear in PNAS journal.

“Over the past 50 years, we are seeing that diets around the world are changing and they are becoming more similar – what we call the ‘globalised diet’,” co-author Colin Khoury, a scientist from the Colombia-based International Center for Tropical Agriculture, explained.

“This diet is composed of big, major cops such as wheat, rice, potatoes and sugar.

“It also includes crops that were not important 50 years ago but have become very important now, particularly oil crops like soybean,” he told BBC News.

While wheat has long been a staple crop, it is now a key food in more than 97% of countries listed in UN data, the study showed.
