NYT: Obesity Rate For Young Children Plummets 43% In A Decade
Federal health authorities on Tuesday reported a stunning 43 percent drop in the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-old children over the past decade, the first broad decline in an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke. The drop emerged from a major federal health survey that experts say is the gold standard for evidence on what Americans weigh. The trend came as a welcome surprise to researchers. New evidence has shown that obesity takes hold young: Children who are overweight or obese between age 3 and 5 are five times as likely to be overweight or obese as adults.
“This is the first time we’ve seen any indication of any significant decrease in any group,” said Cynthia Ogden, a researcher for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the author of the report, which will be published in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, on Wednesday. “It was exciting.” Another explanation is that some combination of state, local and federal policies aimed at reducing obesity is starting to have an effect. Michelle Obama has led a push to change young children’s eating and exercise habits and 10,000 child care centers across the country have signed on. The news announcement from the C.D.C. included a remark from Mrs. Obama: “I am thrilled at the progress we’ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.”

This handout photo provided by the Smithsonian shows a dress designed by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan for First Lady Michelle Obama. It was worn to the 2012 Governors Dinner and is now on display at the Smithsonian’s first major exhibit: “Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation” on Indian-American influences in U.S. history. Khan has designed several dresses for Mrs. Obama. The exhibit opens Thursday.

Hi
Um, just so y’all know, I kind of look like Sam Kass.
…………… ok.
Actually, I get rid of my stubble and that’s me. Bald headed men of the world unite!
I think Wayne must be the opposite of Samson – he needs to lose the hair, right now.
…………. ok.
That’s good to know 😎
Yeah. Sure you do.
Nice delusions of hotness, sir. But no dice.
To his credit, he said “kind of.” I mean don’t you think that Roland Martin kind of looks like PBO?
Just as well you said “kind of” – else some may well say “in your dreams”
Oi you, when’s Aussie rules starting? I miss watching men in ridiculous uniforms chasing a ball around a cricket oval seemingly at random. (And it is the most awesome sport to watch EVER.)
Supposed to be a winter sport – but the pre-competition competition is probably due to start any time soon. Aerial ping pong is how most outside of the fervor describe the game.
It is so much better to watch than rugby – union or league – it ranks with “real” football at showing the skill involved (or in the case of some teams – not to be mentioned – showing the lack of skill of some players)
And as we say in my world – a “you” is a female sheep – and that I ain’t. You may call me the beautiful and talented 99.
Oh lord, I had such a crush on Agent 99.
There ya go – I’m reviving the joy of past times.
lol, good to know LL.
FLOTUS is fabulous! Thanks for the post NW!!
You are welcome.
I second that Allison.
Gooooooooooooorgeous, thank you Nerdy!!!!! What amazingly brilliant news about the obesity figures, so heartening.
It’s pretty fantastic news.
And what amazing beautiful pictures – now I best go read/watch what was said.
That dress is stunning. I’ve never seen the full dress. I only saw a picture of her sitting at the table when she wore it at the Governors Dinner. I’m dying to get to the Smithsonian to see this one in person.
Why is Sam Kass married to Alex Wagner? Why? Please advise. 😦
Indeed.

Say it ain’t so???
HF, I thought they were just dating. Didn’t know they got married.

Signing off to do some reading, and recharging. Admit to chuckling away at the SoCal TODObots as they prepare for temperatures plummeting all the way to 60F!! Ooh, ooh, brrr.. Y’all bundle up, y’hear??!! 😆 😆 😆 When we get to 60F in Seattle, we throw open all the doors and windows and rejoice that Spring is here! 😉 ♥ ♥
Jenna Bush is enjoying the whole thing. Nice that she can be such a great sport.
The incomparable Michelle Obama! She rocks everything. Love the pic of that beautiful dress which we never got to see in all its loveliness.
All right, off to scrounge up dinner at Bristol Farms for me and the missus. See everyone on the flip.
LL, have a lovely dinner with the missus. Love Bristol Farms. Another delicious dinner coming up for the missus. Enjoy!HZ
Oooohhhh Nooooooo, the MSM haz a SAD:
Only way to get the truth to the people.
LOL! Too bad I say!
Lol! I love their hurt fee fees!
And – looking at what Miller reports on twitter – no wonder folks need to go around him.
what mental lightweight. so now presidential administrations shouldn’t have any pubic relations departments? that’s what those releases are. the white house now, all of sudden with president obama, is bad to put out official statements and talk about what events they put on throughout each week, according to ann compton and friends?!?
and of course, as long as “journalists” claim their job is to “present both sides,” as chuck todd recently did, then they should not ever be considered “news people” and the white house SHOULD BE bypassing these charlatans. actual journalism is about searching for the truth in matters, to the best of their abilities. it’s that simple.
Thanks for the Zeke Miller tweet. meta. I like to answer them. They really are in a bubble and just don’t realize what people in America think.
Best way to counter the GOP propaganda machine masquerading as U.S. mainstream media!
Good evening TOD. Thanks for the awesome post, NW! Y’all! Just shoot me now….I’m sooooo stupid. I engaged in dialogue on twitter with a RWNJ. It didn’t start out that way, I was providing her with facts about the ACA then she steadily and swiftly devolved to repeating Faux News talking points. It really is impossible to get through to them. She said she was a small business owner who had to cut hours due to the ACA. I asked her if she had more than 50 employees and she replied that she was a smal business not a corporation. I informed her she was exempt from the law. It was all downhill after that. These people are seriously mentally incapable of hearing and processing facts. They make it easy for Republicans to lie to them because they’re too lazy to do any research and prefer to be spoonfed what they learn. SMH. It really used to be possible to have a political conversation where we each might learn a thing or two but all they spout is bullshit that’s been debunked a thousand times.
Whew! Sorry guys. Rant over.
And how this fits the tweet above – the LIES of the media and the GOP is why the WhiteHouse “goes around” the lyin’ media.
So very true, 99ts. It still makes me sad to see how far our media has sunk. Pure propaganda for the GOP.
GE, TOD. Wonderful round-up, UT!
The heavy hand of BIG-brother 😎
Thanks for posting this, NW!
I rushed to check out this article when Nena posted on an earlier thread.
I really wish journalists were held accountable for their misguided opinions that fuel RWNJ narratives.
Of all the feckless MSM, I feel a special contempt for those northeast white sorority “feminist” snobs are probably the most myopic of all. They seem to have an inability to imagine life outside their pampered status.
Recall that Michele Cottle raged against FLOTUS last year (I didn’t click on the article) for not measuring up to her idea of “feminism” by really making a difference in the lives of actual young Americans and their families.
Cottle is too young to remember the President’s Fitness initiative that was one of JFK’s biggest impact to schoolchildren during the 1960s. I recall that comic books even had guest appearances by JFK promoting the importance of physical fitness.
Well, this boomer says that what’s good enough for JFK is good enough for Michelle Obama!
To Sherijr who lamented the limited hours for PE, this wouldn’t have happened under a JFK administration. Though I’m not sure what kind of PE takes place where the weather can play such a factor. (My PE classes were all outside, no real plan B for bad weather.)
We played games like musical chairs or Name tap hat Tune or wait for it danced. . . Sometimes the Polka. 😉
LMAO! I’m in a relatively good mood this evening, so I won’t pass judgment. But WTF?!?!?
I replied to HF’s post at the end of the last thread to Mark Knoller’s post about how cold it will be in Minnesota tomorrow for the President’s visit.
HF posted a reply to Knoller that snarkily referred to “global warming.”
RWNJs really are too lazy to look at a map of the entire U.S.
I have empathy for all of TODville suffering through MONTHS of unimaginably bad weather.
Going to rustle up some dinner folks. Be back in a bit.
R.I.P Harold Ramis. A legend and an early supporter of then Sen. Obama in 2008
And this lying media is still ignoring the governing (or not) of Chris Christie – but good to see the local press and Rachel Maddow are still on the topic.

And this is why librarians rock:
This is a really lovely post, Nerdy Wonka. You can see in the pictures how passionate FLOTUS is about children when she is talking. Both the President and First Lady are inspiring and encouraging millions of children. They have given so much to this country, but this particular legacy will have an impact for generations.
I also want to share an article I just read in The Denver Post. It’s about President Obama’s manufacturing hubs and that some of that research may come to Colorado universities. The line that caught my eye talked about a very important consequence that can come from the President’s initiative leading to more jobs and more practical applications. There may be other articles that go into this idea in more depth, but I find it intriguing.
[Kurt Maute, the associate dean for research…] He believes the university will get some financial benefit, but doesn’t see that as the point. “The longer term effect, that researchers suddenly realize there is something really interesting in the area of manufacturing, that is what is important.”
Some wonderful pictures of FLOTUS. Since Jenna Bush is with her today, will the interview with Jenna Bush be on the Today show tomorrow? Check it out tomorrow.

Ahoy 99ts. How’s about sendin’ me a bit of Aussie weather, eh?
It’s still too hot here – but I’m not to complain about that on TOD. Surely spring is nearly there ??
-2 degrees F tonight. Maybe 15 tomorrow and the rest of the week..
I don’t do -2, not even on the centigrade scale – which is the one we use. Lowest about 5C – around 40 degrees in your language.
Right now I’d settle for 0C.
You need to dream bigger dreams 🙂 10C at least.
Baby steps. Floods if snow melts too fast.
I could not handle it – down under it floods when it rains too much – we don’t do melting snow or shoveling paths or icy roads. I’m very grateful.
For book lovers around the world. The website looks exciting.
Now if publishers would give libraries the same access to ebooks…
Not set for Android. Major flaw.

The discussion on the Arizona bill is concentrating on the attack on the Lesbian/Gay community. It is openly discussed on all media – yet when there is an attack on a racial basis the media seems to do all it can to say “this is not about race”. It is time for this to stop – it is time for an open fightback BY THE MEDIA against the racism that exists and is shown to exist each and every day.
Bravo, 99ts! A lot of people have noticed this also. It’s very telling and another indictment on the 99.9% crappy media the population is being exposed to.
300,000 pounds a week gets only this?
tsk, tsk, tsk.
She is so happy. see? I aimtoplease. Unlike unohoomanu.
The money seems to impact every player – David Beckham lost it as soon as he was given the millions – not to mention an American Football player – recently in a game in New Jersey.

small mercies and all that.

oh boy.
Don’t hold your breath on that one
DF posted a link to this article this morning.
I’m a bit troubled though, that DCJ appears to be a Snowdenwald supporter (judging by his twitter timeline).
Speaking of troubling…
I really wish governments would keep their noses out of the bedrooms of consenting adults.
🙂
The longer Gov Brewer waits – the more it seems she wants to check out the negatives if she signs it
@Maddow surprised me last night with her full-throated attack on the MSM since they framed Hagel’s speech yesterday as “defense cuts,” when the SecDef actually asked for INCREASES to what the GOP dictated sequester requires.
Remember: MSM/Koch worst nightmare is for Dems to control both Houses of Congress after the 2014 elections.
Obviously wrong tweet….
Credit Suisse “helped its US customers conceal their Swiss accounts” and avoid billions of dollars in American taxes, a report has alleged.
It claims the bank opened Swiss accounts for more than 22,000 US customers, with assets totalling $12bn (£7.2bn) at their peak.
The report alleges bankers helped clients create offshore shell entities and design transactions to avoid arousing suspicion.
Credit Suisse declined to comment.
“From at least 2001 to 2008, Credit Suisse employed banking practices that facilitated tax evasion by US customers,” the report by a US congressional committee said.
