NYT: Obesity Rate For Young Children Plummets 43% In A Decade

Federal health authorities on Tuesday reported a stunning 43 percent drop in the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-old children over the past decade, the first broad decline in an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke. The drop emerged from a major federal health survey that experts say is the gold standard for evidence on what Americans weigh. The trend came as a welcome surprise to researchers. New evidence has shown that obesity takes hold young: Children who are overweight or obese between age 3 and 5 are five times as likely to be overweight or obese as adults.

“This is the first time we’ve seen any indication of any significant decrease in any group,” said Cynthia Ogden, a researcher for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the author of the report, which will be published in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, on Wednesday. “It was exciting.” Another explanation is that some combination of state, local and federal policies aimed at reducing obesity is starting to have an effect. Michelle Obama has led a push to change young children’s eating and exercise habits and 10,000 child care centers across the country have signed on. The news announcement from the C.D.C. included a remark from Mrs. Obama: “I am thrilled at the progress we’ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.”

That dress is stunning. I’ve never seen the full dress. I only saw a picture of her sitting at the table when she wore it at the Governors Dinner. I’m dying to get to the Smithsonian to see this one in person.

Good evening TOD. Thanks for the awesome post, NW! Y’all! Just shoot me now….I’m sooooo stupid. I engaged in dialogue on twitter with a RWNJ. It didn’t start out that way, I was providing her with facts about the ACA then she steadily and swiftly devolved to repeating Faux News talking points. It really is impossible to get through to them. She said she was a small business owner who had to cut hours due to the ACA. I asked her if she had more than 50 employees and she replied that she was a smal business not a corporation. I informed her she was exempt from the law. It was all downhill after that. These people are seriously mentally incapable of hearing and processing facts. They make it easy for Republicans to lie to them because they’re too lazy to do any research and prefer to be spoonfed what they learn. SMH. It really used to be possible to have a political conversation where we each might learn a thing or two but all they spout is bullshit that’s been debunked a thousand times.

    Whew! Sorry guys. Rant over.

And how this fits the tweet above – the LIES of the media and the GOP is why the WhiteHouse “goes around” the lyin’ media.

So very true, 99ts. It still makes me sad to see how far our media has sunk. Pure propaganda for the GOP.

  14. February 25, 2014 at 9:06 pm

    Thanks for posting this, NW!

I rushed to check out this article when Nena posted on an earlier thread.

I really wish journalists were held accountable for their misguided opinions that fuel RWNJ narratives.

Of all the feckless MSM, I feel a special contempt for those northeast white sorority “feminist” snobs are probably the most myopic of all. They seem to have an inability to imagine life outside their pampered status.

Recall that Michele Cottle raged against FLOTUS last year (I didn’t click on the article) for not measuring up to her idea of “feminism” by really making a difference in the lives of actual young Americans and their families.

Cottle is too young to remember the President’s Fitness initiative that was one of JFK’s biggest impact to schoolchildren during the 1960s. I recall that comic books even had guest appearances by JFK promoting the importance of physical fitness.

Well, this boomer says that what’s good enough for JFK is good enough for Michelle Obama!

To Sherijr who lamented the limited hours for PE, this wouldn’t have happened under a JFK administration. Though I’m not sure what kind of PE takes place where the weather can play such a factor. (My PE classes were all outside, no real plan B for bad weather.)

LMAO! I’m in a relatively good mood this evening, so I won’t pass judgment. But WTF?!?!?

    • February 25, 2014 at 9:58 pm

I replied to HF’s post at the end of the last thread to Mark Knoller’s post about how cold it will be in Minnesota tomorrow for the President’s visit.

HF posted a reply to Knoller that snarkily referred to “global warming.”

RWNJs really are too lazy to look at a map of the entire U.S.

I have empathy for all of TODville suffering through MONTHS of unimaginably bad weather.

This is a really lovely post, Nerdy Wonka. You can see in the pictures how passionate FLOTUS is about children when she is talking. Both the President and First Lady are inspiring and encouraging millions of children. They have given so much to this country, but this particular legacy will have an impact for generations.

I also want to share an article I just read in The Denver Post. It’s about President Obama’s manufacturing hubs and that some of that research may come to Colorado universities. The line that caught my eye talked about a very important consequence that can come from the President’s initiative leading to more jobs and more practical applications. There may be other articles that go into this idea in more depth, but I find it intriguing.

[Kurt Maute, the associate dean for research…] He believes the university will get some financial benefit, but doesn’t see that as the point. “The longer term effect, that researchers suddenly realize there is something really interesting in the area of manufacturing, that is what is important.”

Brewer is getting pressure from all fronts to veto the anti-gay bill. Saw this very supportive editorial

For better or worse, the National Football League is one of the most influential and monied sports organizations on the planet.

Those who run this powerhouse have the opportunity to use its heft to right a wrong in Arizona, where lawmakers recently passed a discriminatory anti-gay bill…..

The discussion on the Arizona bill is concentrating on the attack on the Lesbian/Gay community. It is openly discussed on all media – yet when there is an attack on a racial basis the media seems to do all it can to say “this is not about race”. It is time for this to stop – it is time for an open fightback BY THE MEDIA against the racism that exists and is shown to exist each and every day.

@Maddow surprised me last night with her full-throated attack on the MSM since they framed Hagel’s speech yesterday as “defense cuts,” when the SecDef actually asked for INCREASES to what the GOP dictated sequester requires.

Remember: MSM/Koch worst nightmare is for Dems to control both Houses of Congress after the 2014 elections.

Credit Suisse “helped its US customers conceal their Swiss accounts” and avoid billions of dollars in American taxes, a report has alleged.

It claims the bank opened Swiss accounts for more than 22,000 US customers, with assets totalling $12bn (£7.2bn) at their peak.

The report alleges bankers helped clients create offshore shell entities and design transactions to avoid arousing suspicion.

    Credit Suisse declined to comment.

“From at least 2001 to 2008, Credit Suisse employed banking practices that facilitated tax evasion by US customers,” the report by a US congressional committee said.
