That means the entire Washington, DC metropolitan area is closed. Nothing is moving outside. My office and everyone else’s is closed today.

I get to play on TOD all day 🙂

GM, GrandmaDD! I’m tempted to say ‘Lucky you’ while grumbling ‘Why didn’t I get a snow day?’, but I won’t. 😉 😉 I have to go in for work today (this worksite opens later than my usual ones, which means I’ll be late coming back) and the roads are perfectly fine even if the landscape is white, and brown, as far as the eye can see. ENJOY *your* TOD day, DD! 😀

        • February 13, 2014 at 7:33 am

Hope you guys get more snow than ice…which was the biggest issue for us this time around. Even so, stay safe and warm.

We got a foot of snow overnight and now we are getting freezing rain. I think the freezing rain is really the reason why everything is shutdown. No one can maneuver through that stuff.

            • February 13, 2014 at 7:51 am

“No one can maneuver through that stuff.” But there are always those who try to prove otherwise. We can only hope that their recklessness does not put others — especially first responders — in harms way.

            • February 13, 2014 at 12:59 pm

That sounds like Oregon last week. Those working in my area and in school here went home after a half day of work with snow building up and coming down hard on Thursday. A day off from school and work on both Friday and Monday after days of snow and freezing rain. That was followed by hard rain and wind and snow gone with things back to normal on this last Tuesday.

Donna, the good news about that for our family is that our daughter gets to stay home and play with our little grandbaby all day today. That makes for one ecstatic little 16 month old toddler.

We’ve learned our lessons from the past so now we are quick to shut it down. I am thrilled for your grand baby to have mommy home with her today. I get to keep the twins tomorrow night. I cannot wait!!!

        • February 13, 2014 at 9:04 am

Good morning Donna. That is good news for you, no so good news for me. Our Washington office is our main office that handles conflicts checks, docketing, new billing numbers, and computer problems. It would be great if we could shut down for the day, but won’t happen.

Good Thursday Morning Chipsticks…TOD Early Birds! Congrats on first libra800!

I’ve been enjoying the pictures and videos from the French President’s visit as well as keeping up with the important things.

I’ve been staying out of the icy/freezing rain. I’m definitely glad that people were not stranded on the roads this time…at least not here in Georgia. But I understand the winter storm is now moving up the east coast so I hope that everyone affected stays safe and warm.

    Everyone have a wonderful day!

He seems to be operating under the mindset, “You can’t take it with you.” Whatever his reason, it is a breath of fresh air that he is being unselfish in sharing his wealth with those in need; giving hope and opportunity to young people for a better future.

Sounds like a man with a heart and a purpose. I don’t remember ever hearing this name before, so I went to ‘the Google’.

“Feeney, an Irish-American with dual citizenship, was born in New Jersey during the Great Depression and came from a modest background of blue collar Irish-American parents in Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. His ancestry traces to County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. He served as a U.S. Air Force radio operator during the Korean War, and began his career selling duty-free liquor to US Naval personnel at Mediterranean ports in the 1950s.

He graduated from the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.[1] In 2010 he received the Cornell Icon of Industry Award.[6]

In 2012, in an historic event, all the universities of Ireland, North and South, jointly conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws on Feeney.[7] During the year, he also received the Republic of Ireland’s Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Irish Abroad,[8] and the UCSF Medal[9] for outstanding personal contributions to the University of California, San Francisco’s health science mission.

Feeney has four daughters and one son. He married twice. His first wife, named Danielle, is French. His second wife is named Helga.

Known for his frugality, Feeney flies coach class, owns neither a home nor a car, and wears a $15 watch

      • February 13, 2014 at 7:56 am

I did the same thing VC. I found this article interesting:

“Chuck Feeney: The Billionaire Who Is Trying To Go Broke”

Chuck Feeney is the James Bond of philanthropy. Over the last 30 years he’s crisscrossed the globe conducting a clandestine operation to give away a $7.5 billion fortune derived from hawking cognac, perfume and cigarettes in his empire of duty-free shops. His foundation, the Atlantic Philanthropies, has funneled $6.2 billion into education, science, health care, aging and civil rights in the U.S., Australia, Vietnam, Bermuda, South Africa and Ireland.

Feeney embarked on this mission in 1984, in the middle of a decade marked by wealth creation–and conspicuous consumption–when he slyly transferred his entire 38.75% ownership stake in Duty Free Shoppers to what became the Atlantic Philanthropies…What Feeney does is give big money to big problems–whether bringing peace to Northern Ireland, modernizing Vietnam’s health care system or seeding $350 million to turn New York’s long-neglected Roosevelt Island into a technology hub. He’s not waiting to grant gifts after he’s gone nor to set up a legacy fund that annually tosses pennies at a $10 problem. He hunts for causes where he can have dramatic impact and goes all-in.

Two million is plenty to live on and now he has done so much with his money he can rest in the assurance that thousands of kids will live a better life because of him. Would that he could set an example for the pampered rich who spend their $$ on yachts, jets and jewels while others go hungry.

Hi Chips and all. We are totally socked in today and there is snow everywhere and falling fast. Everything in the area is closed, highways are pretty impassable and it looks as if it’s going to be this way for the rest of the day and evening. I wanted to try to walk anyway just to get air and exercise, but that’s looking more dubious by the minute. Hope everyone else who’s forced to stay in has heat, food and water and stays safe. Someday if we’re very good it might actually get warmer and we’ll be able to see grass again. One can but hope.

Good morning everyone:) So sorry to hear all the weather related issues that everyone is having. Been there, done that….that’s why I moved to warmer clim….I’d had more than enough snow, ice, freezing rain to last a lifetime. Be careful out there. Don’t go anywhere if you don’t absolutely have to….rather than think of it as a pain in the neck, I hope you can think of it as nature’s way of telling you to take a breath and slow down to enjoy….read a book, sip some tea…watch the birds…play with the pets….anything that puts a smile on your face. You can be HERE all day, which is something that most of us don’t get to do during the week:) That’s awesome!

In the meantime, you can close your eyes and imagine 83 degrees, sunny……and people here are bitching about that! Yes…it’s true. TOO HOT FOR WINTER…..I WANT IT TO BE COLDER…..IF IT’S THIS HOT NOW, WHAT’S SUMMER GOING TO BE LIKE?……WWWAAAAAAAA!!!! I find it absolutely perfect. Cool mornings, warm days. Just like I like it. There’s always a complainer in the group, though…that’s just the way it is. Door’s open at my house….

    • February 13, 2014 at 8:27 am

Good morning DF. I can confirm what you are saying. I have only used my heat one week throughout this whole winter and on the weekend I have the air on in my car.

Morning, Jackie! I had the air on in the car the other day too! February…really? I find this weather PERFECT and wish it would stay like this all year long. Even in the 90’s is good….but these 80’s are bliss for me. I just love it. Hope all is well…you know, we really should meet up:) Just sayin’….

Today President Obama begins his “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative to focus on Black and Brown youth who have been disproportionately left out of educational and employment opportunities. Now it’s time to put up or shut to all those fake leaders in the black community of which I’m a part of to show their hand. All I’ve heard for the last 5 years was that President Obama hasn’t done anything for the black community, but those critics never bring up Obamacare, the black farmers, the Pell Grant revamp, etc etc. Now it’s time to walk the walk.

    • February 13, 2014 at 8:49 am

Hi Don, the ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ event had to be postponed today because of the weather, not sure yet when it will be rescheduled.

    • February 13, 2014 at 9:23 am

Right on! Right on… i made a similar comment when i heard of this initiative…but the sad thing is that some members of the CBC have become JADED…in the early days…they were on the front lines of their communities…some being activists before they were legislators…

i think of the Moral Monday Marchers….and i think back to 20 years ago …how there was alot of activism in our communities…we have gotten older but for many of us we did not groom folks to take our place on front lines….

but i have hope that thru the OFA…the struggle around voting rights, civil rights, etc…that a new generation will take their place on those same front lines…because our struggle for justice and equality is what will help to move our Country ..FORWARD>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Gas pipeline rupture and explosion in Ky. (near the Corvette museum where a sinkhole swallowed 8 cars yesterday) Homes and cars destroyed by the fire, one person sent to hospital. And—-the pipeline provided some of the fuel to heat millions of homes and businesses in the winter storm damaged northeast.

OMG. Every day a pipeline of some sort leaks or explodes, or waste chemicals from mining leak into our water. What will it take to wake the country up?

Mayor Bill deBlasio’s going to introduce a municipal ID card so that undocumented residents can come out of the shadows, at least a little bit.
A City ID will give people the right to file police reports, enter municipal buildings, sign leases, use libraries, etc. All good.
This morning it is being reported that the Mayor would like many New Yorkers to get these ID cards even if we don’t need them so that the ID’s won’t become a scarlet letter. If all many people use these new IDs, then the ID won’t be liable to be used as a targeting mechanism.

Sign me up!!! In NYC these days you need to present ID just to enter buildings and i will keep my drivers license in my wallet and use the new ID in a spirit of welcome and solidarity. I’d bet that the 73% that elected Mayor deB will do the same.

My sons tells me “Rap” is a lifestyle.
Some live it. Some try to live it. Some emulates everything Blacks do just because they can.
They also have an option . They can always go back to their comfort zones.

I did not understand that until I reflected back on how I felt growing up and “hippies” back then cleaned themselves up and got back in mainstream America. No questions asked……only their own conscious when the high was over.

Which brings me to this question:
Since they are never satisfied, always whining are the Liberals, Emoprogs confused Repubs who are still trying to get high?

        Scary thought, right?
