Poor guy! You don’t know what you are missing when you judge CA wines on the basis of cheap (ok affordable) brands like Gallo wine. Believe it or not, CA has some of the best wines in the world.
As frequently happens, I posted at the bottom of the previous thread.
About State dinners, I lived in D.C. at the time of JFK. Jackie’s dinners were spectacular. Michelle’s are the most beautiful since then, in my humble opinion. The papers carried multiple pictures of the dinners, and entire magazines were devoted to them…..in color, not the black and white we see so much.
I love it that PBO and MO look so relaxed and at ease. This far into their presidency, they know they do a good job and obviously enjoy what they’re doing.
Michelle is an absolute knockout……the dress is beyond compare elegant and beautiful. In fact, this couple is the most elegant I’ve seen…..their elegance comes from inside.
That decoration is reminiscent of Monet’s garden……an absolutely heavenly place, and a brilliant, perfect idea for this dinner. FLOTUS is amazing……..her ideas are creative and unique.
Amen, LL. Having studied spiders a bit, it seems there are a number of them which do not go outdoors, their specialty is indoor maintenance! Certainly smashing them is not productive, and it feels pretty good putting them outside, so I sometimes have the dilemma of which ones to leave alone, and which to rescue!! In Florida, we had these big BIG ones, and my daughter was just a baby. I was advised just to leave the spiders alone, even to set out small dishes of water for them, and do you know? I never had to spray for insects, and never had palmetto bugs!! So, there is mystery all around us which we do not understand. Sorry VC! š
Forget you, LL. š My grandson is absolutely fascinated with spiders and snakes. Can tell you everything about them. Now, I try to be a supportive Grandmother…want guitar lessons, I’ll find a teacher; interested in the heavens, I’ll foot a trip to NASA Camp…but those spiders and snakes…beyond smashing the life out of them, I haven’t figured it out yet. š
Pres Obama is friends with every world leader he comes into contact with – they cannot help but like the man and his values – hence the good connections.
Agree also. I’ve enjoyed this visit in part because I could listen to French spoken!!!!
My father spoke French sometimes at home…….it was beautiful. Our name is French….settled in Vermont years ago.
I’m so pleased to see the history lesson both presidents have been giving…..very important. France is our oldest ally, and an important reason we won the Rev. War.
Was quite moved that Pres. Hollande awarded the Legion of Honor to our Unknown Soldier, and decorations to six of our WWII vets. They have LONG memories.
oh how nice.. that your dad spoke French to you Carolyn. I, too was moved by the bestowing of honor on our Unknown Soldier and Vets.. how thoughtful and kind.. and as you say countries do not forget.
The big question going into the dinner was who would sit next to President Obama in the seat usually reserved for the female companion of the male guest of honor. A listing of the guests at the head table seemed to suggest it would be Thelma Golden, head of the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York, while funnyman Colbert was seated next to FLOTUS.
Outside on the South Lawn. The rooms inside of the WH are actually quite small. The state dining room is only about twice the size of a standard dining room.
Whoa! Can’t be an all-nighter, then. Mrs. Obama looked really tired already, when she was on camera during the toast! She probably doesn’t normally sit that long of a stretch, on a normal evening.
I kinda meant to sit with the Obamas, who probably feel the same way – and no doubt one of the reasons Mrs. O was looking so tired. It’s exhausting being around the stuffed shirts and phony females!
Reminds me in only a very slightly similar way, obviously, of going back to my Navy organization, after I retired. First time I was inside the building in a couple of years, but I was going to start telecommuting for them, so I had to go in for an initial meeting. While waiting for someone to escort me through the building, I was greeted by a whole bunch of former co-workers who seemed to fly out from under the woodwork to moan and groan about this and that to me, mostly the bosses and their co-workers. I had previously loved working there, before I retired, when I was in the middle of it all. But it hit me that day full force how much tact and diplomacy and patience one needed to be among people you’re only paid to be with, for long stretches, and I couldn’t wait to get out of there.
Domestic politics are the one truism of life. Hollande and Merkel had to address outrage in their electorates. But you can bet your ass that they were as pissed off at Snowden’s revelations of tactics and strategies against terrorists as was PBO. They have a stake in those operations as well. If anything, Snowden may be making the alliance stronger, which goes against his intent, and those of his FSB handlers.
We are watching the Olympics and the Westminster Dog Show, in the working class the Portuguese water dog won best of class. He will be going for best of show. They talked about how popular these dogs have gotten since the Obama’s have 2 of them. I really didn’t like the cut this dog had. I’ll let you know if he wins best of show.
me?
yes you df… well done š
Thanks, sweetness~! Looks like PBO’s toast has been delayed according to WH.gov
they’re all taking their time over that cake & ice cream š
Ouuuuuuuuuu!!!! Bon soir DF!!
š To you as well, Ms. Chips!
Oui, Desertflower. FƩlicitations!
who knew ~ the Obamaās currently have the first male social secretary.. I so love them for so many things š š so many firsts because of them.
I NEED that red coat in my lfe. NEED.THAT.RED.COAT.
Serving the french ‘murkan wine? Guess hollande will take any abuse.
#blasphemy
LL? I’ll take your coat.
š Oh here we go!
The
toasttaste of CA wines.Don’t hate us cuz we have good wine from Napa Valley š
MORE FOR US
Poor guy! You don’t know what you are missing when you judge CA wines on the basis of cheap (ok affordable) brands like Gallo wine. Believe it or not, CA has some of the best wines in the world.
And my heels!

The tents are set up as a “Monet Masterpiece”… that explains why the photo we saw is so beautiful… love Monet.
that looks like Wisteria hanging from the ceiling.. love this.
That decoration is reminiscent of Monet’s garden……an absolutely heavenly place, and a brilliant, perfect idea for this dinner. FLOTUS is amazing……..her ideas are creative and unique.
NOW
And you wimmin are out to kill the poor things./smh
I always have to tell the missus: “We do not kill spiders. We capture them and put them outside.”

We don’t need to keep ‘the poor things’, we only need a model of their webs. /smh – min!!! /
we men get pally pally even with mosquies.
Yes, very little discernment
No, very little discrimination. blood drinking – both wimmin and mosquies do it, so why discriminate?
In a fair world, we would be called the fair sex.
Or the (mentally) impaired sex
Whitehouse.gov is now airing PBO’s remarks/toast. š Mark Knoller tweeted the whole thing while it was on tape delay.
are you all getting sound at whitehouse . gov?
ok sound on now, whew.
FLOTUS is our very own Disney Princess!
Thanks Chips for the photos! What a treat for me to see now that I’m home.
A pleasure GGail, great to see ya!
Great to be here (((Chips)))
POTUS seems to like Mr. Hollande.. they appear to have a comfortable and friendly connection,, just my opinion.
Pres Obama is friends with every world leader he comes into contact with – they cannot help but like the man and his values – hence the good connections.
well he’s darn likeable.. š
good lord its a beautiful language.
It’s soooooo gorgeous sherijr, no language like it!
agree with you Chips š

ohhh thank you JER, how thoughtful of you š and what an interesting dinner partner for POTUS.
You’re welcome Sherijr.
So nice to concentrate on a softer topic tonight, like the State Dinner! Thanks, Chips!
Is that tent outside? How could that be? I’m watching on C-SPAN2 but can’t imagine that.
Outside on the South Lawn. The rooms inside of the WH are actually quite small. The state dining room is only about twice the size of a standard dining room.
Damn. How are they heating that bad boy?
Good question Mr. Yardarm. I would be interested in knowing the answer as well. š
Nice heated tented pavillion … nobody looks cold, so I’m guessing the heat’s working! Brrrr.
I know but the thought of it. Yikes!
Tell me about it. If they’d heat my street here, I’d actually step outside. Ha!
They better eat fast ’cause they got some bad news coming up the coast.
Whoa! Can’t be an all-nighter, then. Mrs. Obama looked really tired already, when she was on camera during the toast! She probably doesn’t normally sit that long of a stretch, on a normal evening.
Wish I were there!
Too many stuffed shirts and phony females for me. š¦

And that was just while I was in the lobby. Ha!
’nuff said!
That was a very nice toast. Good relations once again.
You’re making Chuck Todd all upset now..he was so banking on a hostile relationship because of SnowdenWald….
Domestic politics are the one truism of life. Hollande and Merkel had to address outrage in their electorates. But you can bet your ass that they were as pissed off at Snowden’s revelations of tactics and strategies against terrorists as was PBO. They have a stake in those operations as well. Yes, that is true. And the US media apparently and foolishly thought along the same lines as the SnowdenWald cult.
So true LL
LL, you are always so insightful because you focus on the big picture!
My pleasure!

Here’s a sweet tribute to Shirley Temple Black, who has passed away at age 85:
Very sad – I always loved Shirley Temple. She should be very proud of what she did in her life.
She was great!
I’m lovin’ the First Lady’s do!
Night everyone…all that French made me so relaxed, I have to go to sleep….beautiful language.
G’nite df. Sleep tite! Don’t let the House GOP bite!
I assume there will be a post up with the video of PBO’s and M. Hollande’s remarks?
Fantastic choice.
“Voluminous”. A word too seldom used.
Another wonderful word that rolls off the tongue!!! LL and I collect wonderful words….
What a philistine. š
Exactly – WWR knows nothing – absolutely nothing
I agree, WWR knows nothing. Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely nothing.
FLOTUS is our very own live, living breathing, beautiful Princess. Awwwwww!
š
that is so funny … couldn’t stop laughing š š it’s one of those jokes I’ll think about later and start cracking up all over again.
Oh gross—-In PBO’s hometown of Chgo, Christie entertains audience with scurrilous and sarcastic slams against PBO and Dems……
That’s all he knows how to do……cheap, loud, nasty bulling. He has nothing else!!! An empty shell.
Keep digging, you mo…fu…er.
