Am I a geek because I’ve been chuckling myself silly watching Monty Python?

Crist described a 2009 meeting between President Obama and the National Governors Association where Republican contempt and disrespect for the president was on full display:

It wasn’t that reasonable people couldn’t exchange insights on these important issues. It was that the loudmouths in the room seemed far more intent on lecturing the president. To me, it sounded more like finger-pointing—five or six beers in—than any give-and-take between the nation’s governors and the leader of the free world. It wasn’t everyone. But it was enough of them. And for a while there, they all but commandeered the room. I hadn’t said anything. In settings like this one, I don’t usually feel the need to hear myself talk. In a room packed with politicians, there are always plenty of blowhards to fill the air. But I could feel the president was getting ready to wrap up the sessions, and I was seething in my seat.

I just may have to pick up his book!

Good evening Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family. I hope all is well with everyone. C-Span First Ladies series will focus on our FLOTUS Michelle Obama at 8:00 PM CST / 9:00 PM EST today.

…. am so hoping for that selfie 🙂

I am sorry to be dense (and late) on this. I left a comment for Linda on an earlier thread that said that though I’m not familiar with NJ geography, the lane closures affected ONLY traffic in Fort Lee and not on the bridge itself. Whatever traffic snarls that occurred on the GW bridge during the lane closures were due to the vagaries of traffic congestion (e.g., too many cars, traffic accidents, etc.).

I think the helicopter was too far south to see the traffic in Fort Lee. And even if you could see Fort Lee traffic from the helo, a casual observer might not notice, especially because there is so much else to focus your attention on (i.e., the Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, Manhattan skyline, etc.).

I’m in the LA area, and whenever I fly into LAX, I try to get a window seat. When arriving from the east, I love looking at the landscape and traffic below, but until we get very close to LAX (i.e., the 405 freeway), I could not tell you which freeway or major street is below the plane

The Gov’s office is also saying the helicopter would not have flown anywhere near Fort Lee and that Wildstein was not on board (Rachel just covered this) but

        1. That is the flight path as per the Gov’s office and as per normal – the path on this day may have been different
        2. Who was on board

If they flew over Fort Lee it was deliberate and they would have been looking – the problem was also at the Toll gates on the Bridge – they would have ween that as well.

      • February 10, 2014 at 9:28 pm

Understand your perspective, Arapaho. What is significant is that the folk on that Committee have subpoenaed the flight records. I don’t think that’s an accident, i.e., I think they’ve got info they are keeping confidential until they have official flight logs to corroborate what they already have been told.

One of the more damning pieces of evidence that Wildstein could have would be related to the events on 9/11. I can just imagine Christie instructing the heli pilot to fly over Fort Lee so he could get a real chuckle at how he was sticking it to folk there. He’s just that kind’a guy – pure bully, through and through.

That’s obviously speculation – but, I’d never take a bet that Christie didn’t do exactly as I’ve just written 🙂

You need to see the article on Rachel’s show about the helicopter. It also included a map with the bridge for orientation. Earlier I heard that all the bridge traffic was affected even though it involved closing down the lanes to Ft. Lee.

Charlie Crist think the opposition to President Obama might be alittle racists . Come on Charlie, alittle. That is all it is about.

A link to this article was tweeted by @MichaelColeman, a good person to follow if you’re interested in New Mexico and the Mountain West (I ran out of room in the tweet to give him credit for the link).

What a difference 5 years makes. That’s why we shouldn’t be looking to the past for our leaders in 2016 and beyond.

Most interesting to me is #3 on the list:

The 5 Biggest Energy Changes in the Past Six Years
    1) America’s oil and natural-gas boom.
    2) The rise of EPA and the fall of climate-friendly Republicans.
    3) Environmental movement flipping from top down to bottom up.
    4) The dramatic rise in exports across the fossil-fuel board.
    5) Renewable-energy growth, which is objectively significant but still relatively small.

California’s Central Valley (was once known as the breadbasket to most of the US) is gearing up for President Obama’s visit on Valentine’s Day.

“Democrat Rep. Jim Costa of Fresno was glad to learn of the president’s upcoming visit.

‘We’ve been wanting the president to come to the Valley for a long time. The federal agencies’ willingness to work with the governor and state to deal with our short-term water problems is absolutely essential,’ he said. ‘I expect the president to talk about how he’s going to cooperate with the governor to address problems not only in the Valley, but throughout California.'”

Interestingly, John Boehner visited at the height of “summertime in the winter” spell last month — when I complained that we were getting zero marine influence, which has never happened in my memory for longer than it takes the Santa Ana winds to blow through (which typically follow our rainstorms).

Unlike the rest of TODville, I have sympathy for Boehner. I don’t think he’s an evil person ala the truly Kochs (saw a tweet to an article behind the Fortune paywall that said their father earned money from Stalin’s Russia — don’t know the details, but as @Maddow says, the Koch brothers earned their fortune the old-fashioned way, they inherited it).

Some folks put their principles before their job (Charlie Crist an example) – Boehner did not. He should have stepped down as the speaker if he did not like what was happening.

Continuing on the theme that climate change is not a future abstraction, it’s here now:

Remember the Polar Vortex — which happened three times last month, plunging the mid-section of this country and portions of the northeast and south into icy conditions?

Guess what? The high temps in Valdez AK were consistently ABOVE freezing (which is not something that regularly occurs in winter — the continental US got the freezing temps instead AK). The higher temps and soggy conditions caused a massive avalanche. It’s truly distressing to see how warm last month was in the gorgeous state of Alaska — see right-hand chart:

If you travel in the four corners area (“Indian Country”) you’ll see historical markers noting the “uranium on the cranium” post-WWII craze for mining those riches from that area, particularly in New Mexico.

“CARLSBAD, N.M. — Half a mile beneath the desert surface, in thick salt beds left behind by seas that dried up hundreds of millions of years ago, the Department of Energy is carving out rooms as long as football fields and cramming them floor to ceiling with barrels and boxes of nuclear waste…”
