Not sure I’m going to be able to sleep tonight, thinking of these hungry children sitting through an afternoon of school with no food in their stomachs, if I don’t get this out of my head.
From the above article…
‘Unfortunately, children are served lunch before they get to the computer for payment. The children who didn’t have enough money in their accounts had their normal food trays taken from them and were given the fruit and milk.
This situation could have and should have been handled in a different manner. We apologize.
The post on Facebook also goes on to acknowledge that the incident was “an embarrassing and humiliating situation.”
The district, according to KSL-TV, contends it did try to warn parents about the outstanding balances. However, Lukes said she was not notified.
“Even if they did try to send the word out, you still don’t do that to a child,” she told KSL-TV. “You don’t take a lunch out of their hands.”
UPDATE: The Salt Lake Tribune reports that two Utah lawmakers, Sens. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, and Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, held a news conference at the school on Thursday.
Weiler called the school’s actions “bullying” and “an abuse of power,” adding, “This person came into a school and used her power to humiliate and embarrass children and I think we ought to draw a line and say that’s not acceptable behavior.”
The school district issued another apology, at the news conference. Spokesman Jason Olsen said, “This was a mistake. This was handled wrong.” And he added that food shouldn’t have been taken from the students “once they went through that line.”
IMO, in addition to the debasement of their action those responsible also clearly did not consider the negative lesson they were giving vis-a-vis fruit and milk. Seems to me they were silently teaching that fruit and milk are not as optimal as their cooked lunch. Dumb, mean, shortsighted and very degrading – wouldn’t want my child under such an administration. They are actively TEACHING so many negatives by these actions.
What that school did is brutal assault on those children. Those children will never forget being humiliated like that. Want to know what a ‘non-combat, post-traumatic stress disorder inducing event’ looks like, well this is it.
@sltrib Uintah Elementary should provide free lunch to those children for the remainder of the school year & publicly apologize to them.
I’m just sick about it, and think I’ll go curl up and try to get my mind off of it or I’ll never sleep tonight. But at least I have food. Maybe the school should also bring in a children’s mental health counselor. You are so right that this was a “non-combat, PTSD-inducing event.” Sorry, kids, this is how some “grown-ups” behave. Goodnight.
Do get some rest, Jacqueline. This story just knocks the crap out of anyone possessing even an ounce of empathy, a drop of humanity. Wicked behavior that will leave scars. That’s why those children need a bunch of care – including mental health consults and more, if necessary.
GGail, if you follow the facebook link in the tweet I shared with your west coast neighbour and read the comments below you may see a familiar name. Naturally the owner of said name was behaving all excitedly /whisper….and starry-eyed/ 🙄
I cannot believe it, GGail – but he was actually doing one of *your* happy dances when he brought the comments to my attention. After some consideration I have to say I don’t think your influence has been a good calming one – he used to be as contained as his parent in the face of gestures like this one. /smh/
Lib_L: I think this link may have more meaning to you than it does to me (never having played BK/DK myself). I think the link in tweet leads to a facebook performance worth listening to. What do you think?
We had a 10 year drought – the dam levels were at 16% before the politicians decided to “do something”. They jumped in upside turkey – bought up land at widely inflated prices – for some, not all – for a new dam that no-one wanted – which was never built. They built a place to convert sea water – which is rusting away – they built a water recycling plant which no-one wanted to use – they paid people to install rain water tanks – and the biggest winners there were the fraudsters (many were caught fortunately)
The time to determine water issues is when the dams are full – when you have time to think through the actions. One thing that was good was the introduction of water restrictions that stopped 70% of our water usage for pointless things – much of which flowed directly down the drains (washing concrete driveways – doesn’t help anything grow).
The drought ended in a massive flood – who would have guessed. Despite the water restrictions were lifted many have never gone back to their old usage levels. Our garden is the plants that survived the drought (and there are many).
I don’t wish you a flood – but climate is changing – we get extremes .
Some folks really like to make it the worst thing since Eve bit the apple. We had the same talk – we did reach a stage where industry/food growers were starting to hurt – but alot of people faced reality for the first time in their lives – both politicians and those who think natural resources are a god given right.
It made many of us value our resources and look more towards preservation. It called out those who said progress at any cost.
Funny sideline – After the flood – dams were full – the cost of our water rate was doubled – to pay for the stupid that happened in the drought. Because we were so used to not using water – this brought in little new revenue – so they doubled it again. They get you going in – and coming out.
I’ve lived through droughts in the last 50 years, but none have included NO Sierra snow pack.
This has been predicted by climate change scientists, but to see it become a reality is frightening indeed.
The good news is that LA and SF will not have water riots this year. Praying for an iceberg to land on the Sierras by this time next year.
99ts — the Christie scandal isn’t going away. Rachel and others on MSNBC may not open with the story every day, but the story is just getting started. Remember, the Watergate break-in happened on June 17, 1972 [a date I remember with ease because I was at a Grateful Dead concert at Dodger Stadium with a group of college friends (including HR Haldeman’s son) on that date].
Nixon was re-elected in Nov 1972, which I never could understand, since Kent State — 4 dead college students happened on his watch. I loathed Nixon so much then.
How true is that Bob – she didn’t try to explain the benefits of the ACA – just agreed no-one should use it. Some folks are their own worst enemies and the GOP likes it like that.
Sick. Totally, sick, 99. I just posted a tweet to Lawrence O’Donnell (down thread) – McMorris’s exploit is but one of millions upon millions of GOP harmful actions against Americans since 20Jan09. This one is particularly stark, because McMorris’s duty is to explain the law and the benefits of the program and enable her constituents to make informed decisions regarding their personal wellness. Instead, she just exploited a person who has no capacity to escape her hate to realize she is endangering herself and her husband.
My ears were disbelieving when some congress critters refused to help their people get healthcare under the ACA.
Whenever I have told a politician I cannot sort out the stupid of a government website – I have someone on the phone within the week – in fact they turn my simple query into a too long training session & then post me pages of details.
Has always been fact in my world – if you want the quickest answer – ask the politician.
Over from last thread..Why do the letters have red(above) and green(below) borders on this website only, I thought it was my computer but no other site is like this, any help, suggestions will be appreciated.
There is a chrome icon at the bottom of my screen heard of fire fox have no idea what it looks like of course I may have it how do I know what I use I thought I used windows but if I plug it in and it comes on it works that’s the extent of my tech knowledge
My recollection is that typically bloom in June in SoCal. It would make sense for any plant that hasn’t died from the drought to think its June, since plants judge their blossoming/leaf shedding by low nighttime temps and length of day. Our low nighttime temps have been more Springlike than WInterlike. There are several Jacaranda trees in my neighborhood, will check them out in the next few days to see if they’re blooming a few miles northwest of you.
Today’s gloomy/overcast day was the first we’ve had for about 9 months. It was great, but no hint of actual rain from this.
I loved all of the wide-ranging SOTU, it’s hard to pick a favorite part.
But for me, this was the most crucial action item that the US needs to implement:
“Let’s continue that progress with a smarter tax policy that stops giving $4 billion a year to fossil fuel industries that don’t need it so we can invest more in fuels of the future that do.”
It is so important to our environment and climate. Vicki said earlier today that the entire state of West Viriginia was about to be abandoned. I think she was joking, but the outlook for blessed water is looking increasingly bleak in the Koch-polluted waterways and the parched Western US.
Here’s my tweet yesterday to the shallow snob wife of Ezra Klein:
@AnnieLowrey No, this is
Smarter tax policy that stops giving $4bn a year to fossil fuel industries that don’t need it #Fuelsofthefuture
So the DNC event with Michelle was in a downtown SF boutique hotel, about 200 present. She did photos for about an hour. The woman I waited to go in with, who is a Sheriff and has done security for many of PBO’s and MO’s events, went up and got a big hug. We were both on the rope line so got handshakes at the end. She stopped to hold the baby of the other woman next to me. She is so incredibly warm, enthusiastic, and down to earth. Her talk focused on how important 2014 is for Congress, the state houses, and governors’ mansions. She pointed out who we are working for: girls, students, families. She ended with the story of the student from NOLA who learned to read at 14 and is now a sophomore at Bard. If we vote, donate, volunteer and work the way we did in 2008 and 2012 we will succeed. She also talked about immigration, equal pay, equal rights, opportunity, living wage. She was introduced by Mayor Lee: SF minimum wage is $10.74. Then KamalaHarris spoke. She is a dynamo. A future President.
I am still on Cloud Nine. Such radiance and vitality. Such heart!
She was as amazing as I expected and more. Will post another picture in AM. She fires people up, talking how we can bring about “change we believe in.”
Oh, taiping2, this is WONDERFUL!!!! Just look at her!!!! FLOTUS is so tremendously brilliant and warm. Sounds like you got to bask in her radiance!! GREAT photo.
Thank you for everything you do, LL and please thank your sweet lady for what she does. Your comment about her ‘shaving’ her patient will be with me for a long time.
Frisbheezi!!
Ha!
Danny is forgiven Chips. 🙂

Chips – This is a delightful wrap-up! Thanks, dahlin’.
What did Danny know, and when did he know it???? Greensnowalden, Tapper, Knoller, Todd and Issa want to knooooooowwwwww!
OK – I’m late cause I was just listening to Rachel link more political issues to people at the Port Authority.
Finally! msm other than dKos is covering this sad, pathetic LIE.
For Chips:
My dog plays invisible Frisbee.
He catches invisible balls.
He rides an invisible skateboard.
He hurdles invisible walls.
My dog has perfected the practice
of doing invisible tricks.
He jumps with invisible jumpropes

He barks at invisible mailmen.
He growls at invisible cats.
He’ll bring me invisible slippers

He chases invisible squirrels

He’s clearly the greatest dog ever.
I love my invisible dog.

I LOVE THAT. Have an invisible dog, myself, and we’re quite content with the arrangement.
We must have been related way back when 🙂

Precisely – they were happy for the food to be taken away – it was just done wrong!!!! Big Asshole.
I still feel Child Protective Services should look into this situation.

Found the quote “”If your guys keep doing this, the next election they’ll win will be 80 years from now,” O’Reilly said.”
