The First Lady Speaks On Let’s Move And ObamaCare

Sierra Marquina: First Lady Michelle Obama Talks Let’s Move!, Signing Up For The Affordable Care Act, And Valentine’s Day

Mrs. Obama’s initiative to help stop the problem of childhood obesity, Let’s Move!, was launched four years ago and has made a significant impact on children’s health today, not only in their homes, but in their schools as well. The goal with the initiative is to solve obesity within a generation and set up children to be able to lead healthier lives, a movement she starts by doing at home in the White House. When it comes to her two daughters, 15-year-old Malia and 12-year-old Sasha, the first lady shares: “Barack and I try to lead by example. I mean, we eat dinner together every night and we rarely miss that, even with his schedule, and we spend a lot of time talking about the issues of the day, but we talk about what we’re eating and why we’re eating it. We have a lot of, ‘Finish your vegetables’ conversations.”

****

The Affordable Care Act allows every single American to have access to quality affordable health care, which is so important because there are millions of people out there who are worried about losing their home or going bankrupt because someone gets sick … What Barack believes is that here in America … poor health should not be the thing that causes someone to lose their home. But before the Affordable Care Act … that’s actually what was happening to people around the country.” “Here’s the thing, young people lead risky lives. I always joke about this, but the young people are the ones out at the club at three o’clock in the morning and more likely to slip on the ice … I mean, life throws you some curveballs and young people in particular need to have insurance. If you think about it, you insure your car, but you’re not going to insure your life?”

****

So what does Mrs. Obama expect from her husband this Valentine’s Day? Not much! Mrs. Obama explains: “This year, again, I’ve had this big birthday celebration—my husband really celebrated me so well—He did a great job. I had a great couple of weeks, so I think we’re going to low-key it for Valentine’s Day.” Albeit, she’s not concerned he’ll be too low-key. ”We have been married for 21 years and he never forgets a Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, a birthday. He’s really good at that kind of stuff.”

****

after turning 50 on January 17, she insists everything gets better with age. “You’re more confident, you know yourself more, you’re not concerned about what other people think. And if you’ve taken care of your health, many times you can be in the best shape you’ve been in … you watch your kids grow up and I know, my girls, they’re starting to become real people with opinions and it’s just so much fun to talk to them now,” she shares. And speaking of her two girls, what’s it like to grow up in the White House as a 15 or 12-year-old? “Barack and I strive to make sure Malia and Sasha can lead as normal a life as possible and even though we are in this crazy bubble, they do things that normal kids do,” Mrs. Obama admits. “They go to sleepovers, they go to concerts, they go to dances.”

A simple test for Republicans on poverty

    By Greg Sargent

    ——————————

Republicans like Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, and Mike Lee have talked a lot about poverty lately. That’s a good thing. Senator But Sherrod Brown asks a good follow up question: If they want to do something to help the working poor, why don’t they support a currently existing bill to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit?

In case you haven’t heard—-Good news from NYC. Mayor deBlasio has made good on his campaign promise to end the appeal concerned with preserving Stop and Frisk.
The appeal is dead and NYC residents can expect to be treated fairly and respectfully. Good work, Mr. Mayor.

Also, it appears the war-mongers in the Senate have folded at least for now. Diplomacy with Iran will be given every chance. Good work, Mr. President.

Good for DeBlasio. Stop and Frisk was a racist policy that shouldn’t have been started in the first place. It’s not good policing.

re: Justin Bieber and FORUS50’s comment on previous thread — sorry that I’m always behind.

IMO – Today’s American teen celebs have the worst role model parents imaginable. Stage mom who force their kids into show biz are bad enough, but now the teen celebs have adolescent groupie wannabe parents (e.g., Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, etc.).

Since you all are powerful and dedicated Obama watchers, I imagine others are noticing how relaxed and at ease both POTUS and FLOTUS are looking these days. I felt it and saw it as soon as POTUS stepped in the door of the House chamber Tuesday, and when he started speaking it was “I’m enjoying this and having a good time, and you can hate, but I don’t, and I’m happy.”

I think part of what makes the repukes so mad is that they CAN’T make him mad and nasty. That’s one thing they’d love to do……or make him look defeated, walking in with his shoulders hunched over, his head hanging…..NO, He walks in practically bouncing along with a smile on his face…..think how this twists their insides!!!!! A hateful person cannot abide this inner calm and contentment in another person.

She looks totally relaxed and at ease…….only three more years, no more campaigns, and they will work to the last day doing what they believe is best. They are experiencing a great inner freedom, and it shows.

H/T Smartpants 🙂 Flashmob in Central Park yesterday…send this around!! From Smartypants:

Four years ago, Al Giordano had some advice for the “protest movement” (yeah, I’m looking at you OWS).
Add a coherent political message, banners, leaflets, a dance tune that resonates with the message, and such to a dancing musical flash mob like these and you have the seeds of a new, more effective, kind of protest than the tired old marching around in circles of the last century that has ceased to win any cause for anyone.
Yesterday the young people of Generation Progress took it to Central Park with Donte Stallworth to encourage young people to “Get Covered.”

Get the AWESOME video there:) http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2014/01/rockenroll-flashmob-in-central-park.html

      January 30, 2014 at 5:48 pm

This is great. I LOVE Al Giordano. He knows a thing or two about effective activism. Like the President, he knows that only organized, focused action can lead to results.

That being said, OWS wasn’t “all” bad. They added emphasis to the problem of income inequality. The 1% vs the 99%. President Obama of course has been talking about the problem for years. But what OWS did was to put it on the forefront. In an environment where, unfortunately, it sometimes takes some theater to get the attention of the national media. National media is weakening but is still a player. So in a sense I’m grateful for OWS.

Marches, protests can do one thing: bring attention to some problem. Install a conversation. But it’s just the first step.

I wish but they won’t. I believe that some people feel this is how they stay connected because they watch this stuff sun up to sundown. It really is smoke and mirrors for the most part with a sprinkling of real news thrown in for good measure. Morning Joke probably threatened to walk off the set so Griffin bows to his wishes. The tweet was inappropriate (although probably true) but there has been a helluva lot worse said over on Fox and no one seems to care.

I can only stomach those shows for a minute or two. I’ve listened to the way they frame a topic and its all right leaning. It’s just not my thing but different strokes for different folks.

To me if your going to be progressive then be progressive if not then whats the point. A part of me admires that Fox is brazen in their support for the right. I just don’t know what the heck MSNBC is…. 🙄

MSNBC is not falling for it. MSNBC is a part of it. This is Phil Griffin’s business model. To play “both sides” while pushing a (mostly) right-wing/Libertarian agenda.

MSNBC LOVES to pull these “apologize-to-Republicans” stunts but you will be hard-pressed to find ANY instance when someone on their network insults PBO and/or Democrats and is made to apologize for it.

Thank you LL for seeing through those bull shit stunts that Griffin continues to pull at least once a month. It’s high time that we stop getting sucked in by MSNBC when they occasionally drop a few crumbs (e.g., Rachel does a rare segment on Koch Brothers, or Joy Ann Reid is given a daytime slot that very few people watch).

First of all, at this point, I don’t need Rachel Maddow to tell me stuff about the Koch Brothers that I’m not already aware of. Nothing on MSNBC at this point is giving me information that I don’t already have or can get if I do my own research. So I’ve turned off that station PERMANENTLY.

      • January 30, 2014 at 6:29 pm

YES, it’s just as POTUS said. He doesn’t watch because there’s nothing to learn. They all have their set pieces to play out and it’s a tired schema.

Maybe if Charlie Crist wins in Florida we can see him and Rev. Al celebrate the end of Stand Your Ground.
