A brain-dead woman kept alive by a hospital in Texas because she was pregnant has been taken off life support.

A court had ruled that John Peter Smith Hospital must stop life-saving measures for Marlise Munoz by Monday.

Mrs Munoz, 33, was 14 weeks pregnant when she fell unconscious in November. It is believed she had a blood clot.

Her family wanted to let her die, but the hospital had argued it had a legal duty to protect the unborn child.

Her life support was turned off at 11:29 local time (17.29 GMT) Sunday, family members told News 8.

“May Marlise Munoz finally rest in peace, and her family find the strength to complete what has been an unbearably long and arduous journey,” lawyers for the family said in a statement.

Syria will allow women and children to leave the besieged area of Homs “from now”, the UN mediator at the Geneva peace talks has told reporters.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said women and children were free to leave. He alleged armed groups were preventing them from leaving.

Mr Brahimi said that the opposition had agreed to give the government lists of detainees held by armed groups.

He said it was “too early” to assess the prospects of a comprehensive deal.

He admitted the talks were proceeding slowly but said that on Monday he “expected the two parties to make some general statement about the way forward”.

Mr Brahimi said he hoped a humanitarian convoy from the UN and the Red Cross would be able to go to Homs on Monday.

Hundreds of people are reportedly trapped in besieged parts of the city, including some who are very ill.

If all goes well, the agreement on Homs would be the first concrete outcome of the peace process, the BBC’s Bridget Kendall reports from Geneva.

A member of Somali rebel group al-Shabab was killed Sunday by a missile fired by a suspected drone, a rebel commander said, blaming the U.S. for the strike.

Abu Mohamed told The Associated Press that Sahal Iskudhuq, a militant commander who was believed to be close to al-Shabab’s top leader, was killed when his car was hit by a missile in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region. The attack took place in a village called Hawai, he said.

A Somali intelligence official confirmed the attack, describing the victim as a “dangerous” member of the group. His driver was also killed in the attack, the official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to reveal the information.

Wait until you see the video of her performance. The sexiness will have your blood pressure skyrocketing.

If it gets posted on Youtube, I’ll bring it over to TOD.

She did not come to play. She threw down and no one on stage has matched her since she finished her performance.

She’s just showing what a woman looks like, compared to the younger Miley Cyrus type singers who think they know. No offense to the latter, but there’s a difference between real and play.

The woman is grown, talented, and sexy. The awards speak for themselves and the image fits her new album to a T. She is owning her sexuality and won’t apologize for it. I applaud that.

    Experimenting with dinner:

We breaded some of those really thin pork chops with panko and italian bread crumbs and then fried them crispy in a pan. While that was happening we also cooked some angel’s hair pasta. After each chop was done, I put some marinara sauce on it followed by a couple of thin slices of chorizo topped with two half slices of smoked provolone cheese. Next we laid down a bed of pasta in a casserole dish, placed the chops on top and put it all in the oven to melt the cheese. We’ll see how it turns out.

      January 26, 2014 at 9:28 pm

Not a bad mutation of chix parm if I do say so myself. The chorizo (Boar’s head brand), really complimented both the smoked provolone and the marinara.

We’re going with an Arroz con Pollo on tuesday night. I haven’t decided what to make tomorrow. The kids have swim classes at 5:00. It’s not the greatest time for it, but it’s when we could get them in. My work week starts on Wednesday this week, so I am hoping for enough Arozz con Pollo leftovers to pack lunches for a couple of days.

LOL! It’s funny but she DOES have a point when you think about it. I mean, everyone calls him “Obama.” Supporters and haters alike, young or old, black/white/rich/poor, gaystraight, sane, mentally ill, human, beast, insect and fish – they all know him by “Obama.”

So it’s almost as if he doesn’t have a first or last name – he’s just “OBAMA” and that’s it.

        January 26, 2014 at 9:54 pm

She doesn’t have a point as far as I am concern. I don’t like it when they call him Obama, it isn’t showing respect as for as I am concern. It should be President Obama. I don’t call him Barack, because he is the President of the United States and he should be call President Barack Obama or President Obama. Some of the haters call him Barry. Was Ms. Bitch trying to be funny? I guess I didn’t get it.

If Hillary is the democratic nominee, the republicans will be so ugly it will be hard to watch. The republican party has become so ugly, so nasty; they’re doing so much damage to the american psyche. They have NOTHING, nothing positive to offer. It’s all about fear and gratuitous hate.

        January 26, 2014 at 9:23 pm

I just can’t handle that they “forgive” every last thing ANY republican does – but a democrat – whole different story. They have completely run out of ideas for attacking the President – so they now turn on other democrats while blaming the AG for being so mean in investigating corrupt GOP Governors – and there are a few more of them who should be evaluating their options.

what was wrong with Taylor dancing? I thought it was appropriate. She liked the music, so she danced.

Thanks for the great cartoons, lovelyplains. I’ve enjoyed reading all of your comments. I wanted to share a tweet I just saw. I wasn’t aware of this. In May, India declared dolphins non-human persons. Dolphins are amazing in many ways. I’m so thrilled by this. The news is usually focused on things that make people feel frightened or angry and as I look around there is an incredible amount of good every day. President Obama and his administration do so much I find it overwhelming. I can’t keep up with all of it, but I’m reassured knowing they are there working with good will and energy for all of us and the earth.
