White House:  First Lady Michelle Obama Announces Commitment by Subway® Restaurants to Promote Healthier Choices to Kids

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama joined the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and SUBWAY® along with SUBWAY® Famous Fans Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin, and Justin Tuck at a local Washington, DC, SUBWAY® Restaurant, to announce a three-year commitment by the chain in support of her Let’s Move! initiative to promote healthier choices to kids, including launching its largest targeted marketing effort to date.  In addition to strengthening its already nutritious menu offerings to kids, SUBWAY® will launch a new series of campaigns for kids aimed at increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and will set new standards for marketing products to families.

“I’m excited about these initiatives not just as a First Lady, but also as a mom,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.   “Subway’s kids’ menu makes life easier for parents, because they know that no matter what their kids order, it’s going to be a healthy choice.” As part of its commitment, the SUBWAY® restaurant chain will: only offer items on its kids menus that meet strong nutritional guidelines informed by federal standards for the national school lunch program, including offering apples as a side and low-fat or non-fat milk or water as a default beverage. deliver $41 million in media value in the next three years to market healthier options to children and families, with a specific focus on increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. This is the brand’s largest kid-focused marketing campaign to date, and includes general marketing, in-store merchandising, television, social and digital media and public relations.

Hey Cindy — they are truly pathetic. Remember this ….

GOP launches candidate training: How to talk to women

“Let me put it this way, some of these guys have a lot to learn,” said one Republican staffer who was at the strategy session in Mr. Boehner’s office, Politico reported.

The NRCC, meanwhile, has held “multiple sessions” on the same topic, a GOP aide reported.
Part of the fear: The GOP doesn’t want another Todd Akin-like moment, when the Missouri Senate-hopeful dropped with a thud in polls after speaking on the campaign trail about “legitimate rape.” Sen. Saxby Chambliss later attributed some sexual assaults in the military on male hormones, sparking accusations that he was dismissing and making excuses for what’s emerged as a top-talked about criminal issue.

Yes, I remember it well. I laughed so hard-thought I would cry : ) …….training to learn how to talk about women…insane.

My only question to these brain dead fools; what ja got against us women?

Improper grammar, but that it is just how I would state it, if I was in the Huck’s face.

They act as if we are some exotic, other species “out there” somewhere. Do they not ever talk with their wives, daughters, sisters, mothers, teachers, co-workers….or is one of the problems that they always TALK. They never LISTEN.
Jim Stuart’s New Blog today is talking about how the president LISTENS…..we know he does by what he says and does. These people never shut up long enough to listen, they are always talking, so they hear only themselves….never do they hear women, or minorities, or anyone who is slightly different from them. They think the way to get women’s votes, because that’s all they’re interested in, is just to mouth the right words.
They’ll never get it, and fortunately, I think women are waking up to and realizing this fact.

Maybe there would be some hope for the 1.3 millions families who lost their income, if the media gave noise to their plight, as they are giving to this rich kid the Beeb.

Sadly, what ever his problems are, that keeps him trouble, it’s probably just a matter of time before we are reading his obituary. I don’t understand how so many of these talented individuals, who have so much, throw their talent, and eventually their life away. I felt the same way about the beautiful and talented Whitney Houston. You could see her train wreck coming, it was just a matter of when. Clearly, money doesn’t make you happy, but there is so much they could do to help others.

Christie convinced everyone that he was fixing everything in New Jersey. he didn’t mention that he was fixing business, the homes of the wealthy and the white – and a little infrastructure in the areas where Mayors supported his election.

            What really irks me
He paid $38 million to a firm to provide software to “control the spending” yet he allows no oversight or information on that spending. His people rant about what has been “allocated” – but no-one is ranting about what they received.

Time has come for all federal money to go directly from the feds to the local communities.

    No matter what our kids
And the new generation think about us,

OUR Lives are LIVING PROOF !!!

    To Those of Us Born
    1925 – 1960 :

    At the end
Of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don’t read anything else,
    Read what he

    Very well stated,
    Mr. Leno.
    1930s, ’40s, ’50s,
    ’60s and ’70s!!

    First, we survived
Being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank
    while they were

    They took aspirin,
ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.

    Then, after that
    trauma, we were
    put to sleep
    on our tummies
    in baby cribs
    covered with bright colored
    lead-based paints.

    We had no
childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
    And, when we
    rode our bikes,
    we had baseball
    not helmets, on
    our heads.

    As infants and
children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts,
no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..

    Riding in the
back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

    We drank water
from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

    We shared one
soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

    We ate cupcakes,
white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
    And we weren’t overweight.

    Because we were
    always outside playing… that’s why!

    We would leave
home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights
    came on.
    No one was
able to reach us all day.
    –And, we were

    We would spend
    hours building
    our go-carts out
    of scraps
    and then ride
    them down the hill,
    only to find
out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned
    to solve the problem..

    We did not
have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were
    no video games,
    no 150 channels on cable,
    no video movies
    or DVDs,
    no surround-sound or
    no cell phones,
    no personal computers,
    no Internet and
    no chat rooms.

    and we went
    outside and found them!

    We fell out
    of trees, got cut,
    broke bones and
    and there were
    no lawsuits
    from those accidents.

    We would get
spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand,
And no one would call child services to report abuse.

    We ate worms,
    and mud pies
    made from dirt,
    the worms did
    not live in us forever.

    We were given
BB guns for our 10th birthdays, rode horses and used games with sticks and tennis balls, and

    -although we were
Told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.

    We rode bikes
or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
walked in and talked to them.

    Little League had
    and not everyone
    made the team.
    Those who didn’t
    had to learn
    to deal with

    Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing
Us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

    These generations have
produced some of the best risk-takers,
    problem solvers, and
    inventors ever.

    The past 50
to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..

    We had freedom,
Failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

    If YOU are
    one of those born
    between 1925-1960, CONGRATULATIONS!

    You might want
to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers
and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

    While you are
at it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents

    Kind of makes
you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it ?
    The quote of
    the month
    Jay Leno:

    “With hurricanes, tornadoes,
fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the
country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist
attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?”

Yardarm, this brought back so many memories. We go crazy worrying about child car seats. When a child faces forward or backward, when they have to be changed with age, how padded they are, whether they have cupholders, etc, etc. etc. As kids we all tumbled around in the backseat and no such thing as a seat belt lurked in the seams. When our mothers carried us as infants, they held us in their arms in the front seat. It’s stunning that we’re all alive to talk to each other.

Oh my gosh…this is so my generation (1956). Yes, do I remember the mud pies and they were fancy too. We never wiped the bottle off-your turn , drink up.

Don’t forget the whippings; go outside and bring me the switch, the one you (child) chose yourself off of the tree, and it better not be a small one. How did we survive? Everyone took care of each other’s child and your teachers were your second parents; not your lover.

My, my how times have changed.

      Thank you yardarm756….I LOVE IT!!!

  23. January 23, 2014 at 3:05 pm

The issues discussed in this article are definitely something that needs our focus and attention:

The Tea Party and the structure of American government

Senator Chuck Schumer gave a pretty good speech today about “the rise and potential fall of the Tea Party.” In it he dissects the blatantly self-interested nature of Randian plutocrats like the Koch brothers, and has a solid takedown of their set of preposterous underpinning ideologies. But while he is definitely on to something, I don’t think he has quite finished the case for why the Tea Party has been so successful. He does take on some of the structural problems which are plaguing the American political system, but more is needed.

VIDEO: Huckabee reflects on women, libidos, and ‘Uncle Sugar’

      By Steve Benen

And finally, there’s the latest look at Mike Huckabee’s public persona. As we’ve discussed before, he may have a jovial, non-threatening reputation, but the Arkansas Republican has a deep mean streak. It was, after all, Huckabee who spoke out soon after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, when tying the lack of government-sponsored religion to the tragedy.

Huckabee has also falsely claimed that President Obama “grew up in Kenya”; he’s endorsed “death panel” garbage; he’s equated the national debt with the Nazi Holocaust; and has gone after the LGBT community with over-the-top rhetoric. In August 2009, Huckabee even argued on his own radio show that Obama’s health care reform plan would have forced Ted Kennedy to commit suicide.
Today, he appears to have added to his greatest-hits list.

[Hope this hasn’t been discussed already. Still trying to catch up on TOD. Not into The View or that gasbag, Ann, but this bit made me say, Ahem!]:

Ann Coulter’s appearance on The View today to promote her latest book, Mugged, quickly erupted into a back and forth between her and the show’s co-host, actress Whoopi Goldberg.

No stranger to controversial comments, Republican pundit told the show’s co-hosts that liberals use race-mongering “to promote causes that have nothing to do with facts and, in fact, harm blacks,” and that white people’s response to the O.J. Simpson trial verdict was “the best thing that ever happened to black Americans.”

Not long into the interview, Goldberg exploded with frustration.

“Hold up, Ms. Coulter. Please stop,” she interrupted. “If you’re going to talk about race, at least know what you’re talking about.”

“What don’t I know?” Coulter asked.

“Tell me how much you know about being black,” Goldberg responded. “You just made all these statements about how black people feel. Tell me how you know.”

Yeah……don’t many women use birth control because it’s the MEN who can’t control their libido, and they don’t want to be pregnant all the time??? He needs to read the tales of women with ten to twenty children not too long ago who died WAY before they should from childbearing and associated conditions!!! Or watch Call the Midwife on PBS which takes place in Britain before dependable birth control….those poor women were constantly pregnant and worn out!!!
Of course in those days of too many births, men outlived women and had at least two or three wives. Maybe that’s what he longs for!!!

But Huckabee is fine with medically unnecessary ultrasounds and auditing of rape victims so they don’t get abortions? Which party is it that is supporting the government intrusion into every woman’s personal business?

It’s the Huckabees (and McDonnells and the other Neanderthals) who are the real purveyors of an intrusive nanny state.

I wish all women of America would declare a “libido boycott” for Republican men! I bet you if that happened Republican men, as well as the manufacturers of Viagra, Cialis, and other male enhancement drugs, would be the first in line to put pressure on idiots like Mike Huckabee to stop peddling their nonsense. Speaking as a man who witnessed the birth of my two children and my grand niece, all I can say is that us men, until we can give birth to babies, should STFU when it comes to reproduction. We really have no idea the pain and suffering it takes to bring a life to this world. Our contribution is purely based on fun and momentary ecstasy.

Witnessing the birth of my children convinced me that African religions that depicted God as “Female” were absolutely on the mark. Incidentally, instead of preaching abstinence to women, Huckabee and his ilk should be preaching abstinence to us men. Some one needs to tell the idiot Huckabee that if men controlled their libidos women would have no reason to turn to his hideous so called “Uncle Sugar.”

On June 16th this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the loss of my beloved sister who opted for an illegal abortion because coming from a supposedly Christian family she could not face the shame of having an “illegitimate” child. Guess what, the man who impregnated her suffered no consequences whatsoever. He eventually married and fathered other children. Forgive me, but I get so pissed with the”holier than thou” men, like Huckabee, who refuse to acknowledge the unique burdens of women (not faced by men) when it comes to child bearing.

It’s not just CNN that is all-Bieber all-the time. MSNBC was also this morning.

    This made me laugh.

The problem with underage celebs is that they truly believe the world revolves around them; become famous at a time in life that this is true (teenage years) and the real problem kids (e.g., Lindsay Lohan) have terrible, jerkish parents, which doesn’t help the situation.

    OH DEAR …….

Gohmert: Gov’t Tries To ‘Lure’ Single Moms Into ‘Servitude’ With Welfare (VIDEO)

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday said that the federal government uses welfare to “lure” women into “servitude.”

“We need to encourage and incentivize young women, not declare war on them by leading them into ruts like the Democrats did. You want to see who cares? It’s the people that try to help them reach their potential, not lure them into servitude away from it,” Gohmert said on “Fox and Friends,” while arguing that welfare checks make women dependent on the government. “So, the problem is the government, not those single moms.”

It is better late than never. It is also an election year – a few more states will sign up before November. It is a major issue that too many in red states don’t even know what they are missing out on – there should have been a massive publicity outreach from the feds – but the GOP reps would not provide the funds.

This will now be done using campaign money. The dems have a MASSIVE election plus here – it they can bring themselves to use it.

Are republicans obsessed with dressing the “boys and girls” in the same outfits. It’s cute with twins – plain stupid with folks that have age differences of 10-40 years.

Reading all the reaction to what Huckabee said, and I think the real point is being missed. He doesn’t say women can’t control their libido. He is saying Dems believe that they can’t control their libidos and that Uncle Sugar needs to provide them with birth control so they don’t have to deal with the consequences of not being able to control their libidos. The implication is that women don’t realize how Dems view them.

The same argument has been made about how Dems really don’t think much of minorities and that is why they have all these special programs because Dems don’t think minorities are capable enough to make it on their own. The implication is that minorities don’t realize how Dems view them. (See the comment about Ann Coulter upthread.)

The real problem with Huckabee’s statement, like Coulter’s, is that he is saying that women are too dumb to realize that Dems view them as sluts. So it isn’t the Rush Limbaugh’s of the world that think of women as sluts, but it is the Dems that view them that way. And those sluts are too dumb to realize that.

Coulter calls blacks dumb and Huckabee calls women dumb. As Charlie Pierce would say “I despair for the rebranding effort.”

AMK/Chipsticks and every one concerned about me being AWOL, here is my response to your R&S inquiry that you might have missed because I signed on very late.

“Hello AMK and Chipsticks! Sorry for being awol. I just came back from a three weeks trip to East Africa (mainly Uganda). Had no access to a computer. Got back on Monday, but caught a nasty bug (head and chest cold) that I am now barely recovering from. I truly missed reading TOD posts. I hope you and everyone at TOD had a wonderful beginning of the New Year. I will try to read some previous posts to catch up. I truly appreciate your looking out for me. Lots of love to TOD family.”

Thank you Donna. It’s so good to be back as I missed out on all the goodies at TOD for almost a month. I hope your precious twin grand babies and their parents are doing well. I don’t know if I ever told you that I too come from a family of twins. My mom was a twin. She also had twins (my sister and brother) that I came after, and my sister, her second daughter, has twins (boy and a girl).

Well mate, thank you so much for thinking about me. I really did not coordinate with Dudette to be AWOL! I am now finding out from the previous posts that she has been under the weather. I am so glad and thankful to hear that she is on the mends and feeling much better. I just can’t imagine this place without Dudette. She brings so much love, passion, and genuine enthusiasm for life with all her music selections she shares with us. In my case, I should have alerted you guys that I had this opportunity to go to the Mother Country that I couldn’t pass on. Unfortunately when I arrived back, three days ago, I had to deal with pure fatigue and a flu virus that’s still bugging me. Thankfully, I feel much better today than I did two days ago. I am so glad to be back.

The WA TBGOPer rep to deliver the rebuttal to the POTUS’ SOTU next Tuesday has 3 kids.

Shall I even ask how she was controlling her Libido? She just had her 3rd child in Nov or Dec. Huckabee what say you?

I knew the TBGOPers will be picking a woman. I bet they went to the gov of NM and she said: No. SC gov was out for she has low approval ratings. 3 female GOP senators…..ME, NE and AK. I bet they all said: Hell No.
