Thank you, Mr President. For respecting women. I’ll bring over a “compare and contrast”…. that will make what he states here all the more stark.

Good to see you MightyPamela. Hope your knee is better. Downsizing must have been tough, but I’m sure you found treasures you forgot you had.

We woke up to 26 below zero here in central NY. The water pipes in the kitchen were trying to freeze in the worst way, but we fought ’em to a stand still.

Ready? Compare the words and sentiments of President Obama:

We’ve got to keep teaching young men in particular to show women the respect they deserve and to recognize sexual violence and be outraged by it, and to do their part to stop it from happening in the first place. During our discussion earlier today, we talked about I want every young man in America to feel some strong peer pressure in terms of how they are supposed to behave and treat women. And that starts before they get to college.

So those of us who are fathers have an obligation to transmit that information. But we can do more to make sure that every young man out there — whether they’re in junior high or high school or college or beyond — understand what’s expected of them and what it means to be a man, and to intervene if they see somebody else acting inappropriately. We’re going to need to encourage young people, men and women, to realize that sexual assault is simply unacceptable. And they’re going to have to summon the bravery to stand up and say so, especially when the social pressure to keep quiet or to go along can be very intense.

And contrast with the words and sentiments of Rep Steve Pierce(Misogynist Shitforbrains- MN) :

“The wife is to voluntarily submit, just as the husband is to lovingly lead and sacrifice,” he writes, citing the Bible. “The husband’s part is to show up during the times of deep stress, take the leadership role and be accountable for the outcome, blaming no one else.” […]

“The wife’s submission is not a matter of superior versus inferior; rather, it is self-imposed as a matter of obedience to the Lord and of love for her husband,” he writes.

Yes, I actually do need to heave right now. This is who they are. When they show you, believe them.

Here ends our lesson on who respects women for real.

Magpie, I guess that means there’s no one who will challenge him in his district, doesn’t it? There are no women who live there or they’re all brainwashed. Sometimes the stupidity makes you want to tear your hair. And someone married this scumbag.

            And someone married this scumbag.

I mightn’t have used that word, but this is exactly what puzzles me each and every time! I simply cannot wrap my head around women marrying men who hold such extreme views. I really do question their (lack of) self-respect, their brain power and their decision making skills.

Its worse. I had a local woman in Indiana tell be her biblical beliefs are that a woman should never be in a position of authority over a man. So we can’t be an officer in an organization, be a supervisor, an executive, a project manager, a minister, a legislator, a judge, an officer in the military, and the list goes on, if there are men involved. These insane people are running all branches of our state’s government now.

Aw, aren’t you being a bit harsh on NM 2nd Congressional district?

His district encompasses the entire southern part of your state, so his CD includes Silver City and Gallup to the west. Native Americans should not vote for any Republican — GOP are exactly the type that traded blankets infested with small pox with their “friends” and rounded up those who survived that scourge to the reservations in Oklahoma.

The great mix of cultures in NM need to get together and realize that GOP don’t have their best interests at heart. One of the reasons I truly hope a movie of Gabby Giffords life (before the Tucson massacre) is made that the casting directors would need to search high and low for people of color to fulfill roles in the movie and it could highlight the rich heritage of the Native Americans in the four corners area of the US.

I’ve mentioned before here that emoPutins and Snowdenwald cultists think of themselves action superheroes (comic superheroes seem to be overwhelmingly young white males). May I say I LOVE this post, NW, which shows how very much Pres. Obama, VP Joe, and SECDEF Hagel are “in their element,” talking about women with women – in fact, surrounded by women – and the men who support ’em.

Yes, these men obviously love, respect, support, admire the women in their lives…….it shows, really shows. I think there are some men who don’t realize this at all. We know how they think of us by their stance on these issues, and how they respond to women.

Yep, JOB,they don’t “talk” about equality or act like they’re “granting” it to women or have learned something in sensitivity training, they live it everyday and are deeply comfortable with and around women. In my book, that makes them the strongest and most manly of men. If you have to “prove” your manhood by thinking you are better, stronger, more this or more that than a woman, you are a very weak man.

Yes, I know the Remnick article was shared here a couple of days or so ago, but I still encourage you to go read this post in its entirety.

    “Understanding President Obama”
I’ve spent a lot of time over the last six years observing President Obama and trying to understand him. From a personal standpoint, that’s because I find him to be a fascinating human being. But from a political standpoint, I also think that he is a unique figure in our history. We have the benefit of living that history in the present moment rather than reading about it in books. It has been my passion to take it all in and try to understand what is happening.

Many people have commented that Barack Obama became a blank screen onto which people projected their own desires and fears. In watching the coverage of his presidency, I find that to be true. It has been frustrating to watch people simply put him into a pre-fabricated box of their own making rather than listen to what he says and watch what he does. On the extreme right, he has become the socialist demon and on the extreme left the corporate tool. That’s what they expected and that’s what they see. Every word uttered and every action taken is twisted in order to fit the mold. But those caricatures rarely bear any resemblance to the actual man who is our President. And so, whether you agree with him or not, disabusing ourselves of those projections and being open to who he actually is allows us to see the reality at play in this historical moment.

On a couple of occasions, journalists have attempted to approach President Obama with that kind of openness and given us a glimpse into the man they see. Such was the case when Michael Lewis was given extraordinary access and produced the article titled Obama’s Way. Recently, David Remnick (author of The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama – which I recommend that everyone read) gave us another look. I’d like to take a few minutes to cull what I see as significant insights from that article.

Jim Stuart’s New Blog had a wonderful post on Remnick’s article yesterday, entitled Presiden Obama: A Transformational Leader. He lists four ways in which the President has transformed, is transforming the country, and he gives evidence to support his theses.
I loved his analysis of the article…….he talks about the “space” the president works in, mental, emotional…..and how he wants the people to have “space” to think in too.
It is a different approach, one that really appealed to me. Thoughtful, rational, heartfelt. I read the entire essay to my husband, and then he asked me to get it on his computer so he could send it to friends, which he did.
I heartily recommend it. I also love the title of the blog: “Looking at the World with Clear and Quiet Eyes”.

Hello evening folks – I just survived my trip to the dentist – which always amazes me – but coming home to this thread was interesting as while waiting I read a magazine as to why there is much more peace in current times – than there ever was in past times – back to the times of the Pharaohs and the Roman Empire and whenever. Included in the current times is the 20th and 21st centuries. The 20th century had the lowest level of civilians killed in wars than any previous time ever – proof/statistics given and explained. From post WWII until current times even moreso.

One reason given was the bringing together of waring tribes by centralist governments – imagine that – big government is good! but another major reason was the forward march to get rid of discrimination against people because of race, sex, sexual orientation.

I thought it interesting that religion didn’t get a mention in the march towards peace. I think the magazine was a couple of years old – mainly scientific in style & probably Australian. I’d never seen it before & have already forgotten the name. My dentist has a weird collection of magazines.

It is more than obvious that President Obama well knows history and understands what is good for our world and his country.

I fell apart when I left home – 30 years later I realized how stupid I was – been survival techniques ever since.

This is a really positive article about the economy. This is a conference of mayors across the US and it sounds like they work together much better than high level politicians. I find that interesting and encouraging.

WASHINGTON — Cities throughout the nation will begin to see real economic growth in 2014 after years of struggling through the recession, Mesa, Ariz., Mayor Scott Smith said Wednesday as he kicked off the annual winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

“The tone of this conference is much different than the funeral wake we experienced in years past,” Smith, who is president of the mayors’ group, said at a news conference near the White House. “2014 could be a watermark.”

Smith and the other mayors released a report showing that 356 of the nation’s 363 metro areas are projected to experience true, inflation-adjusted economic growth this year. Just last year, 97 percent of those metro areas had declining economies…..

    This is relaxed!!

I used to live in Northern Virginia and saw the pandas at the National Zoo. They had a female and a male, both “teenagers”. He was randy and the female kept climbing trees to get away from him. The guide was trying to explain to the kids that she climbed the tree because he was pesky. Adults sniggered and looked at each other. I wonder what they say if they try to mate in public? Just being friendly? It did take my breath away to see them lumbering alonng on the branches, laying anyway they wanted, rolling over, lifting a leg to groom. Yikes!

When my son was in the second grade, I chaperoned a school trip to the Philadelphia Zoo with some other mothers. A couple of creatures were mating right there before us. The moms were wondering how to handle the questions a bunch of kids might ask as a group – when one kid went ahead and asked another, “What are they doing?” and the other kid answered, “Dancing.”

      We moms were then “Smiling.”

Usually the insurance for part-timers is piecemeal and too expensive to buy. If it is available, some states won’t let them get medicaide. Thank goodness for ObamaCare!

….The announcement was quickly picked up by conservative outlets as proof that the health law is giving workers short shrift. To the contrary, these part-time workers will most likely be better off under Obamacare plans, and Target’s decision to shift the employees into the marketplaces is definitive proof that the health law is doing exactly what it’s intended to do.

It’s important not to conflate Target’s move — one that some other companies like Trader Joe’s have also made — with the actions of some big-name employers who are using Obamacare as a convenient excuse to slash their workers’ hours. Target will continue offering insurance to those who work for 30 hours or more per week, the threshold Obamacare sets for large employers with 50 or more employees. The company won’t be cutting anyone’s work week in order to save on its bottom line, will employ consultants to help workers sign up for new health plans, and will give them a one-time cash payment of $500 to help with the cost…..

If nothing else the McConnell charges have generated discussion on “politicians spend their lives mixing with rich people”

Which in itself is disgusting. President Obama shows that you don’t have to be rich to visit the white house – you don’t have to be rich to speak with the President – or have him read your letters. It’s time that politicians started to mix with the people who vote for them – rather than the ones who give them money for access. Pfffft

This probably isn’t a good idea.

Spent 30 minutes on the phone with Time Warner trying to get my wifi more stable. Was escalated to tier 3 support. The tech showed me how to log into the modem so that I could futz with the wireless settings. Wheeeee…..

Wow, there’s some serious evil ju-ju running through that family tree. Poor tree. it may be well-trimmed and ornamental but it’s dying from the inside. Sad, didn’t have to be that way…

This is where the profiles in courage are separated from the others. If his friends and cohorts were actively involved on the “giving” side, they’ll either lie like rugs or ask for immunity, unless they step up like the Hoboken Mayor did on the “receiving” end. Won’t be long, now, I’m hoping.

O/T, but did anyone find and post the guest list for FLOTUS’ Birthday Bash? Have any secret pics come out? I loved reading about it- would have.done.any.thing.to.get.in. Alas, it was all a dream. No doubt if I had heard President Obama’s toast to Michelle, I belive I would have had to be carried out- not the look I was going for, sooo, all’s good, then.

Love how ya worked that all out for yourself, Kathleen! Sorry but I personally did not see the guest list or any pics. 🙂

Yep, it’s best I don’t find any info… No doubt the next 3 or so hours would be spent day-dreaming. And, well, what self-respecting TOD’er has that kind of time between Rise & Shine and Late NIght music. This is what they call character building, so there’s that.

Will have more on this theme in the coming days ….

Without any doubt, the Kochs and the other plutocrats and their GOP minions have absolutely ZERO chance of prevailing against what I consider the most formidable force for change, hope and humanity ….. details to follow 🙂

Yeah, me too? It’s about time the kenyan muslin is blamed for something. I mean, look at all those passes he got.

Also about time the press attacked him for something – giving him all those passes while poor Gov Christie and Gov McConnell can’t get away with anything.

Also, too – I’m rather pleased to be staying away from Sochi – much could happen there for which the GOP will no doubt blame PBO.

The parliament of Morocco has unanimously amended an article of the penal code that allowed rapists of underage girls to avoid prosecution by marrying their victims.

The move follows intensive lobbying by activists for better protection of young rape victims. The amendment has been welcomed by rights groups.

Article 475 of the penal code generated unprecedented public criticism.

It was first proposed by Morocco’s Islamist-led government a year ago.

But the issue came to public prominence in 2012 when 16-year-old Amina Filali killed herself after being forced to marry her rapist.

While welcoming the move, rights groups say that much still needs to be done to promote gender equality, protect women and outlaw child marriage in the North African country.
