Fantastic picture by Pete Souza: A President at work.

Loving the black and white feature. It immediately focuses one’s gaze on President Obama.

That’s what drives media frauds like Dylan Byers and his ilk at GOPolitico and elsewhere mad…they want to boycott Pete’s photos as if people give a rat’s bottom what the media is boycotting or not.

      • January 7, 2014 at 9:35 pm

Here’s the funny thing about Politico.

On the surface, it’s a “new media” outfit. It’s only on the internet, it’s free to read, etc etc. BUT, it operates under an old-media mindset. It aspires to the same power and influence once wielded by the old media. So it’s this jagged, at cross purposes creature, neither one nor the other. Instead of using the new medium to bring something fresh to the table, it’s just an online newspaper, but without the pedigree.

Yes, I love that black and white study of the President too. I grew up in the age of black/white photography, then everything went to color and it was SO exciting! Ansel Adams stayed with b/w and look how classic and wonderful his pictures are.
The eye is immediately focused on the president as utaustin says, without anything extraneous.

When my daughter and I went to Paris almost ten years ago!!!! I can’t believe it…..she was in her photography phase. She took one camera for b/w film and got some gorgeous shots. Her first one was of a Belgian man in an outdoor café in his black overcoat and black beret, with a dog at his feet. It is outstanding, and then she took the picture of Oscar Wilde’s tomb with all the lip marks on it, in black and white. It is startling. My colored pictures looked quite pedestrian next to hers.

Pete Souza has such a gift, honed by years of practice, practice, practice.

Chipsticks Cheesypuffs Chica O’Cheesy, how art thou? I noticed that you posted a snowy picture of some place in Japan last night, suggesting it was my homeland. Well, because I do know you believe in accuracy (most of the time) I’d like to tip you off to the fact your pictoral info was wrong. Just saying! Although, it was. unbelievably. cold. here. today! So cold, in fact, that when I came home I phoned and rescheduled my mammogram as there was no way I was going back outside.

Interesting comment on LGF in relation to climate change (with the deniers using the chill to laugh at global warming)

I was looking at the record temperatures for Philadelphia. Of the 366 days (Feb 29 is included), there are only 3 (THREE) low temperature records in this century. There are 62 days with record highs in the same time. Think of it. in just fourteen years, one out of 6 days has had a record high temperature.

    Good evening TOD family,
I just had the opportunity to sit down and catch up on the latest posts after tutorial sessions with students this evening. My heart aches Chipsticks from your last post. As always, awesome information, but to see the face of Ms. Hatchett is gut wrenching. I saw a woman who is filled with pain and despair. No doubt, a heavy load of stress that she is carrying is weighing her down. She introduced the President graciously today, and I didn’t see the despair as I watched the speech; however, to see the picture, brings pain. I have walked a mile in her shoes and know what she is talking about. As a single mother during my life after my divorce, I could only feed one of us, and I fed my child and I prayed and fasted (fasted because I could not eat). We lived by candlelight several nights when the electric bill could not be paid after losing my job.

The repukes are heartless individuals who do not deserve anything good in this life. To see 1.3 million individuals hurting and to not care is shameful to the core of one’s being. The evilness that resonates in their ugly souls and spirit will one day destroy their own hearts. This is just so painful, and if I had a way to reach Ms. Hatchett and offer her some help, I would do it in a heart beat. Her pain is real and it shows; she is someone’s mother, she is a woman who has pride, and a woman who is trying to hold on to her dignity with all that she has left.

I pray for Ms. Hatchett and all the others who are affected by the actions of mean, evil, heartless souls who refuses to care about another human being. I pray that God will send 1.3 million angels for each family who need their wings to fly and not fall. Ms. Hatchett, I know your pain and I lift you up in prayer because I have walked a mile in your shoes. God bless our President who feels their pain, and God bless the angels who will help those who are hurting.

Beautifully stated, Cindy. And thank you for sharing what must have been a very difficult time in your life. We have to keep the pressure on our R reps to get UI passed. We have to tell them, everyday if necessary, that we see through their phoniness and know them for the heartless asses they are. Like you, I hope that Mrs. Hackett get some help soon. Nobody should have to go through this and her story is replicated a million times over while UI help languishes in the House.

jackiegrumbacher I agree with you 1000% about keeping the pressure on. However, it just seems as though they are immune to worrying about losing a race. These SOB’s (excuse my language-very painful) are only concerned about destroying President Obama because they can’t deal with the fact that an intellectual black man is “in charge” and lives in the white house. They are angry, old bitter men and women who would take this country to hell if they are guaranteed that President Obama would stay there and burn in it. They don’t care about anyone, and these people go out and vote for them, President Obama is working so hard for “all ” the people and they want to destroy him.. I personally feel so helpless but our strength comes in numbers.

And God bless you, Cindy, for opening our eyes and hearts tonight. At one time, you may have been without much sustenance in your life, but it surely showed you for who you are deep inside.

Your story reminded me of my grandmother, who had to feed an out-of-work coal-miner husband and four children during parts of The Great Depression … she would divide the food in five parts for them and not eat. One of my mother’s childhood memories was to see my grandmother so upset one night that she put a butter knife to her throat and said she’d like to kill herself, because they didn’t have enough food. At the same time, my grandfather – who’d walk to another town every day during this period looking for a job at the mines, until he finally went to the head of the line and got one because the boss “admired his perseverance” – had to go to the town’s food pantry once or twice to pick up a bag of free food. He’d tell my grandmother he’d go at night and walk through the back streets, since he was so embarrassed about not being able to feed his family that he didn’t want anyone to see him. A man who went into the coal mines at age 11.

So I thank you for taking care of your child so well, for reaching out to Ms. Hackett and others now, and for showing the rest of us what the face of empathy looks like. And it’s a beautiful face. Thank you.

I read here every day but haven’t commented much, just thought I’d throw this out: today I had to check with the benefits office of my company about something, and the first thing out of the man’s mouth was to ask if I had questions about the Affordable Care Act. I thought that was interesting. My question was totally different and I told him I didn’t need information but I thought the Act was “wonderful.” Now I’m wondering, are insurance companies, or the benefits arms of corporations, now required to inform clients about the ACA? I’m also kicking myself a bit for not pursuing his query to make sure the information was accurate and presented in a positive way. I’m thinking it would have been. (It’s a pretty big, nationwide company and by and large I think they try to treat their employees decently.)

My thoughts on Bob Gates’ memoir. Speculation only, I have no sources other than those posted here at TOD.

    1) Gates bonded with Hillary as co-equal Secretaries in the Obama Administration first term.
    2) Gates is doing his PUMA-best to discredit (my fav) Biden
    3) Despite the headlines, e.g., NYTimes: “Bipartisan Critic Turns His Gaze Toward Obama,” @LRozen tweeted:

    4) Gates is being disingenuous when he avoids mentioning the fact that the Pentagon always wants more troops, more funding, more war, so of course he and the Administration aides and Vice President are going to be odds during war discussion. I’ve only skimmed the materials, but it appears that the MSM is all wet about Gates being at odds with PBO.

Check out @LRozen’s timeline for other honest thoughts on this Biden-bashing by Gates (to promote PUMAs/Hillary) and the Obama-bashing spin by the despicable MSM.

Gates seems to be doing a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking. Why didn’t he speak up at the appropriate times, instead of sitting there and “seething” Making well researched suggestions was his JOB!!!!! He was not doing his job if he just sat and seethed.
To say the least…….I am not impressed.

I’m going to wait before passing judgment on the book as I have little confidence in the early press reports. It sounds to me like Gates is going to agree that the President made the best choices under the circumstances but that he became frustrated and lost confidence as they were not able to make much progress on the ground. There was also the difficulties with Karzai and his re-election (perhaps not a fair and free election). I remember there was a Jonathan Alter piece some years ago where he talks about the fact that the President went around the room and Petraeus, McChrystal, Gates, Clinton, etc all had to publicly endorse the plan and the timeline. The article came out at the end of 2009 or early 2010. We know from earlier reporting that Biden was opposed to a surge in Afghanistan preferring special forces and use of unmanned aircraft. I think Clinton was pretty hawkish on Afghanistan as well as Syria and Libya. I also remember that she was sending conflicting messages re: Egypt so she was definitely more aligned with the hawks.

      • 75 Lovepolitics2008
        January 8, 2014 at 12:22 am

In their quest for the White House for Hillary, the Clintons have cultivated alliances/friendships with the military brass BEFORE 2008. They put a lot of effort into it. Hillary was friends with Gates before they both become members of President Obama’s cabinet.

The MIC is COMFORTABLE with Hillary Clinton as president. And the whole power brokers that can be called “the permagovernment” probably want Hillary as president. And that should give us ALL pause. Hillary has her qualities, but she is NO Barack Obama and is not the best person to carry out his legacy.

Bob Gates has been, historically, influential. His pushing for HIllary and discrediting Joe Biden is not subtle at all.

I have to say I’m disappointed. I thought Gates had more class than that.

One positive thing: after the initial hysteria, many pundits will read Gates’ book and realize that Woodward’s review is total BS re: Gates disrespecting Pres. Obama.

If at least this new “scandal” can discredit Woodward for good, that would be a good thing. He’s a has-been and a weasel. He’s is so so so overrated.

Just noticed this as I was heading to the kitchen ….. get ready folks …… HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA

“FORT COLLINS, Co.— Michele Bachmann, Republican congresswoman from Minnesota, was arrested early Tuesday morning in Fort Collins, Colorado for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. After reportedly running a red light and failing multiple sobriety tests, Bachmann was taken into custody and booked at the Fort Collins jail. She was released at 5 a.m. on $1,000 bail.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Rep. Bachmann was spending the holidays with her family in Colorado, and decided to indulge in cannabis consumption, following the state’s legalization of the drug on January 1st. Bachmann readily admitted to arresting officers that she had consumed marijuana that evening, but claimed that she did not know that it was illegal to drive under the influence. – See more at: http://www.newslo.com/rep-bachmann/#sthash.kGW7HeXk.dpuf
