They were so young with so much ahead of them and the commentary, in retrospect, shows just how smart and forward looking Dems were. They “were placing their hopes in him” and, Boy, did he deliver. We’re still placing our hopes in him and he keeps on exceeding all of our expectations.

This is totally unreal today. CNN leading story on their site is M. Harris apology today. They stated that high profile Republicans called for an apology; Sarah Palin and Scott Brown. They have a picture of Mitt and the 22 grandchildren, and talked about how MSNBC host are being fired for this kind of stuff. They pointed out that 2 of her guest were the individuals who poked fun at the kid, and MHP said that the boy was handsome, and asked; can you imagine if he married North West and the two families are related? This is overblown to the max-just saying.

For what they’re worth, I had just added my thoughts on the previous thread, after Chips posted this new one.

Disclaimer: I have never met MHP personally, so I have no clue what she’s “really” like. Also, I respect both sides of this issue (from OUR side, since our side is the only one that allows discussion), because both sides we are discussing have merit.

I’ll add my take, if I may, and it’s convoluted. First, in hindsight, using a photo of a white family with one new black grandchild in it during a segment with comedians was asking for trouble (it wasn’t used as a “learning” experience, not with the comedic “give us a caption” concept) – and did show not even so much poor judgment as immature judgment. Second, crying on air during an apology on a TV show (or when you’re Speaker of the House) signifies immaturity. Third, just like when I was MHP’s age “back in the day” – and, let’s face it, even now – for women to cry “on the job” only adds credence to the old-timey remarks that women shouldn’t be in responsible positions because they can’t emotionally handle it.

That said, to think of all the hateful, dangerous, slimey, bigoted, disrespectful comments made about and directed at President Obama’s two children makes the fallout from this incident even more ridiculous. Also, I believe DURING MITT’S LIFETIME (no doubt he was brought up that way) African-Americans couldn’t fully participate in his Mormon Church, much less be adopted by white Mormons. I’m hoping their motives today were the right ones, and not something “political” or attention-getting (because I wouldn’t put the latter past any Romney).

Finally, I say anyone of prominence on our side who wishes to apologize for any of their words or deeds should go right ahead and do it, even if it’s just to save their jobs (and who hasn’t done that?). We’ll never know if MHP meant it or not, and I don’t care either way. I do know that if we don’t apologize because “the other side wouldn’t,” then we’re no better than the other side. And that last part’s REALLY being ridiculous!

Again, my convoluted take, only, but there ya go.

Your thoughts are true. This is Romney running for President again, and he is going to milk this for everything he thinks that it is worth. Old man McCain and out of touch Romney will never recover from their ____ whipping that they took from President Obama. So they will always seek attention and play the victims.

🙂 I always laugh at my reaction to Sasha in that video Jacqueline, when I first saw it I was howling “DON’T SHAKE HANDS WITH HIM!!!”, and was sad when she did! Which is exactly how I react to PBO sometimes when he is being so mannerly and civil, when I want him to punch someone (usually the press). The moral of the story: the entire Obama family have waaaaaay more manners than I ever will!

“One of the most shocking political developments of last year was the speed with which Southern, Republican-controlled states embraced voter identification laws after the Supreme Court overturned section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. To critics, including myself, this was an easy call: GOP lawmakers were taking advantage of a newly permissive policy environment to suppress minority voters, and African Americans in particular”.

It took FDR 4 terms and 3 terms as NY governor and a LOAD of political backing and Lots of money with HUGE Dem advantage in DC and 48 states then.

I watched MHP’s apology, and I watched the segment in question. It was an unfortunate choice, and the format was indeed asking for trouble.

But, one apology was enough. The second one was sincere, for whatever reason, but that she had to do it smacked of some kind of ugly double standard, reverse racism, and it left me feeling queasy. Somehow, it reminded me of the scene in 12 YEARS A SLAVE when the young woman was beaten mercilessly by the man who used her, because his wife wanted retribution for HIS unfaithfulness.

When Sarah PALIN, Glenn Beck, Shawn HANNITY, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Mark Halperin called the president a “dick” on national t.v., apologize for all the despicable, untrue, racist, and deplorable garbage that they spew daily, then I will be able to see equivalence.
Not one of those people have lost their jobs, nor will they. And frankly, it pisses me off.

I am sick to death of these people and so many others saying things, ( even suggesting the assassination of PBO(!) as recently as two days ago)
And getting away with it. They can say anything to the president, about the president, his family, black people, young black men, poor people, Hispanics, gay people, and women and get away with it over and over again.

I am sorry that MARTIN and Melissa made the errors they did, but lose their jobs over it? Why? So that the folks who live in right-wing America don ‘t get their feelings hurt?

All those people I named, and many others, insult and hurt the feelings of the groups above, nearly every single day! They pay no price, show no contrition, and never, ever apologize. It’s sickening and humiliating to have to hear the crap they spew, and then have to watch Melissa and MARTIN grovel at the feet of their masters. I am, personally, offended by the things they say. Because I know that whatever they feel about the president, his family, and all the others they disparage, they also feel about me. MARTIN almost got it right, but it is people like these who defecate in our faces and we have to stand there and smell the stink. That’s how it feels, and I hate it.

We are living in a night-mare which is over two hundred years old. I despair that it will ever end.

      January 4, 2014 at 6:11 pm

I share your pain at the injustice and horror. Sometimes it’s hard to see a happy ending.
My hope is that the more evident the inequity becomes, the greater are our chances to defeat it.

PBO is going to highlight which legislators want to extend UI.
There will be a spotlight on who wants to raise minimum wage and who doesn’t.
Who wants compassionate immigration laws and who doesn’t.
Which party wants sensible gun regualtion and which party doesn’t.
Which party is plotting to take away rights and which party is defending them

      And so on……

Good time to remember the arc of the moral universe.

I am trying to remember, but it gets really hard. I feel like I’m living in the fifties and sixties again. At 67, my time is short. I thought the world would be better for my sons and grandson. I am pretty screwed up over all this.

As an African American, I can’t tell you the number of times that I have felt hurt from how the mainstream has treated our First Family. I can’t tell you the number of times I have been offended by the way this President has been treated. It hurts, and the mainstream gets a way with it. I grew up in Georgia and I was exposed to racism at the core of what hate means. I was called N______ almost daily and humiliated in ways that I could write a book on. This bothers me so much because these people encourage hate because they have a platform, a national platform. The guy on CNN a few minutes a go stated that MHP should be punished, taken off air for a while or fired. In the same breath he said; he defended Duck Dynasty Phil Robinson because he is a Christian and loves the bible.

He shouted to the hills that MHP is mocking white families for adopting a black child; she hurt the Romney family and she should be punished. MSNBC should never have paraded her on TV like this because this is a storm in the making. FOX will blow it up to a new level tomorrow and these are the same morons who allow people to call President Obama every name in the book. MSNBC is sickening and disgusting. They are catering to Joe Morning Joke and the right wing. It’s okay that Trump can parade around on MSNBC as though he owns it, talking about the President wasn’t born here in America, and that is okay, now the cry; fire MHP or at least punish her because she talked about this white family and hurt them. Does anyone not believe that President Obama has been hurt? He works tirelessly for all the people and they do nothing but call him names and try to destroy him.

CNN is saying that the apology wasn’t sincere and that she was forced to do it to save her job. I suspect that it is a matter of time before she is gone.

        January 4, 2014 at 6:27 pm

She is Not going to be fired. MSNBC can’t afford to fire a 3rd person in less than 6 weeks……especially with their ratings where they are today. If she leaves, she does on her own…….pushed due to pressure from some on the left mocking and jeering and from those on the right wanting a pound of flesh.

The way MSNBC is going, nothing would surprise me. I can see them pushing her out and asking for Joy to come in to quiet the noise. MSNBC use to be the only cable news I would watch and now they are as bad as the rest. Keith Oberman was my favorite, although, he was way out in the park sometimes. Now it has been the Rev., Maddow and Lawrence. It was real good to see Maddow take a stand against the Kocki boys (Koch brothers), she stood tall and challenged them to come on her show to defend themselves with no interruptions, must say, it was awesome. I have a feeling that they are having a talk with the Rev. and he is probably being warned because he definitely calls the right wing out.

When I see persons of color greet the President and he them I see the love course through the brief interchange. Its like a bright light shining out, a mutual glow of respect and recognition. I want to reinforce that with my own spirit, though I am watching from afar because that is the kind of humble admiration, deep trust, respect and gratitude I hold for the President.

I agree with you on this.

Ben Ferguson on CNN is pushing for MHP to be fired or take a leave of absence. He is saying that she needs to be punished because she picked on a “white family” who adopted a black child. He says that MHP loved hurting the Romney family and laughed at the child with her friends on air. This guy supports Phil Robinson and said that Robinson believes in the bible and Robinson situation is different. Ben is promoting that MHP said that a black child should not be adopted by a white family, this is a lie. He said that she brought out the picture to show that a white family should not adopt a black child. This guy is dirt and says MHP should be punished. I don’t think she is going to have a job for long. This man loves Robinson and says MHP is mocking whites for adopting black babies. Unbelievable where this is going. Next target, Reverend Al S.
