‘I never bet against President Obama’

by Africa

I never bet against President Obama

If I had a penny for the many times the American Press pronounced President Barack Obama’s presidency dead, I’d be a millionaire. This year, the benchmark it used to measure his presidency was based on the proverbial glitch in the Affordable Care Act Website. But beyond that, every methodical step he’s taken since he’s been president has been reported on by some, from a negative point of view. Whether it was the BP oil spill, foreign policy decisions on Libya or Iran, the reporting began by asking questions about his ability to do it right, fix it or screw it up.

Time and again, with condescension, sometimes even from people on the left, he was derided as lazy or weak. For those of us who support President Obama, we see clearly what some in the media, along with the GOP, are doing. The media couches its disrespect in its so-called reporting. For many in the GOP, it is based on resentment and hate. At every juncture, they have have attempted to underestimate his ability, and have failed miserably. In the end, when it is clear they have been proven wrong, we are treated to their tired and worn out default position. He is lucky. Had to be luck that the Iranian talks worked out. Had to be luck that the Treasury sold GM’s final share. Heck, had to be luck that he even became President of these United States – twice!

President Obama, from my vantage point, has been the most scrutinized president I have known since I came to this country. That includes Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, as I was a young exchange student when Carter ran against Ford.

Of late, the new meme is that 2013 is the president’s worst year. Forget about all the important things he’s done, despite unprecedented obstruction by the Republicans. Even some on the left cannot bring themselves to give him the credit he deserves without the obligatory but…..

President Obama will be the first one to tell you that he is not perfect, by no means. But given the massive obstruction, and one can argue, a huge assist from the press, he has routinely outwitted them. Proven them wrong. By now they should know that betting against him is never a wise thing to do.

Even John McCain was compelled recently to remind them about this (USA Today).

Yet, they never learn. Here is a list of a few, among President Obama’s numerous accomplishments that’s been derided, but returned to slap both Republicans and media folks in their respective faces.

With the website glitch, which even President bemoaned, the MSM deemed his presidency over. It is yet his umpteenth Katrina. Or in David Gregory’s words, his Iraq. Ezra Klein, who got the ball rolling on the Woe is me, Obamacare, just recently had this little gem:

For many, Obamacare was always covered from a negative place, especially by people with their good employer insurance plan. But not all would let them demonize the law. Here, Los Angeles Times Michael Hiltzik debunks and speaks the truth about Obamacare.

Another Horror story debunked: LA Times

The myths of Obamacare’s ‘failure’: LA Times

Now, as the numbers begin to roll in, the silence in the MSM and from GOP is deafening:

General Motors Auto Bailout

When President Obama made the decision to save GM, there were outright condemnations from the right and some in the media:

Auto bailout was not unmitigated success: Washington Post

Heck, when it looked to be improving, Mitt Romney tried to take credit for it (see here)

This year the U.S. Treasury sold GM’s final shares of Common Stock.

Statement from Treasury Jack Lew: see here

The Civil War in Syria was another disaster for president Obama. In fact, who can forget this piece from Joe Klein. “Obama and Syria, Stumbling toward Damascus.” Here he goes on twitter:

But we all know today, Syria has agreed to give up its Chemical Weapons. Hmmm. This, my friends, according to Joe Klein, is how you weaken a nation.

Consumer Confidence on the rise

Just this week, there wass big news that Consumer Confidence has blown expectations out of the water for the month of December. Did something like this happen in a vacuum? Not hardly. But if an alien just stopped by this earth from Mars, one would think that by osmosis it just simply happened. None of President Obama’s plans to revive the economy had anything to do with it. OK, then.

Dow Jones and S&P Soar

Wow. Who can forget the free fall that was the U.S. Economy before President Obama even took his oath of office in 2009? Today with record highs, the Dow and S&P are soaring to new heights. And some of the same men and women with pockets full and investments to boot, continue to dismiss President Obama. Hence, the hypocrisy we see not just in the Republican Party and Wall Street, but from our erstwhile Beltway Media. For Shame.

In 2008, this is where we were:

Fighting the Financial Crisis, One Challenge at a Time: NYT

Today in the age of Obama, we are here. Socialist!

Historic Iran Nuclear Weapons Deal

The United States and other nations held talks with Iran on its nuclear weapons and reached a deal. Let the tweets from Rouhani, State Department and others tell the story:

Statement By The President On First Step Agreement On Iran’s Nuclear Program: see here

As I watched this historic moment unfold, I was reminded of President Obama’s words at his Inaugural address in 2009:

“To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West, know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.”

No, he is not perfect. But in my book, he comes darn near close, given the massive obstruction he faces from the GOP and to some degree, egged on by the U.S. Press.

I am so glad I got to meet you in 2004, President Obama.

A big thanks to Secretary of State John Kerry for the introduction.

Happy New Year TODers. Thank you Chips for this most wonderful place.

ah this is wonderful Africa! Thanks for posting it Chips. I took a little media/twitter break over the holiday and when I got back I found some gross porn junk on my twitter timeline (blech) so I’ve cleaned out the offenders and apologize to anyone who might have been looking at my timeline and having to bleach their eyes out.

Well I unthawed my cold water pipe in the kitchen so that means it’s time to make breakfast. what a lazy day!

Happy New Year Everyone! Didn’t stay up until midnight……was in bed by 11:00…..after watching an episode of Doc Martin on PBS.

Was just thinking how nice New Year’s Day is;;;;;;nothing is expected of us…..no big meal to cook, no presents to give out……if we’re not working, we can just veg out.

Thank you Africa for this beautiful piece. You spoke so many truths.

Your last bit about thanking SOS Kerry for introducing PBO to us…..yes. I believe SOS Kerry will be able to negotiate a ME peace, and will accomplish much as SOS, but if he had done nothing but introduce PBO to the world, he would have had a successful life.

Thanks africa – awesome stuff. It just astounds me that the conventional “wisdom” is to count him out with his record of beating his opponents EVERY.DAMN.TIME. I mean, who would bet against Michael Jordan or Derek Jeter or John Elway? And truth be told, Obama’s political record is better than these sports heroes records!

I hadn’t seen that quote from John McCain but the rest of the short article is bunk, huh? And from a former Chicago beat reporter, David Jackson quoting the AP: “Obama’s agenda of gun control, immigration reform, a grand budget bargain and more sits unfulfilled.”

Oh really? “sits unfulfilled”. What garbage. He’s got a full THREE YEARS left to work on gun control and immigration reform A grand bargain is not something he ever promised in a campaign. From listening to him for the past 6 years the only other things on his “To Do” campaign list is eliminate tax breaks for oil companies, raise the minimum wage, address climate change and close Guantanamo Bay. Compared to the HUGE accomplishments to date these few remaining campaign promises are going to be easy. Really easy if we get a Dem Congress in 2014.

It is just astonishing how much goodness PBO has created so far. 2014 will be magnificent as well!

Next year we willl see a complete pullout from Afghanistan. There will be NO Staus of Forces agreement, as yesterday Karzai released a bunch of specific prisoners he had promised to keep in custody. The same batch who delayed the handover in Bagram last year.
So now we know. Americans who want this terrible war over will get their wish.
    Warmongerers. You lose.

Next year we will see a continuous and accelerating exit from Guantanamo. Detainees who have been on hunger strike will take heart and hopefully survive until the innocent are released and the guilty are in US prisons.

Next year the numbers of medically covered Americans will grow and grow.

Next year the Progressive Mayor of NYC will find a path towards a fairer city. His Inauguration in an hour should be something we can all enjoy.

    A joyous day to all!

Gotta run but before I do I must share today’s Traditional New Year’s Day Menu

Black Eye Peas w/rice, onions, green peppers and ham – Hoppin John style (eat these and you’ll have good luck throughout the year)
Collard Greens (because they look like money, represent good fortune and prosperity throughout the year)
Pork Roast (because pigs are forward thinking creatures & it just so happens that all four hooves point forward)

Fun, Football and Family today and then tomorrow we begin the hard word of tearing down the Republicans in Congress and replacing them with sensible Democrats to work with President Obama.

    Have a fantastic day Everyone!!!

Africa, I love your thread. This statement :

“…..the reporting began by asking questions about his ability to do it right, fix it or screw it up”, IMO completely sums up how the media has responded to President Obama. Most of the left pundits do the same thing. Martin Bashir was the only one on MSNBC who didn’t tell President Obama, how, when, and where to do everything. But as I have said before, President Obama has handled his presidency with grace.

Africa, late coming in, but wanted to say how brilliant your post is. You describe beautifully the rancid atmosphere in which our president and those who love and support him have to operate. It pains me when I hear otherwise intelligent people mouth media lies without analyzing their truth. There is and has been a massive effort underway to put as many obstacles as possible in the path of the progress the president represents. PBO has already overturned all their petty assumptions about him and his accomplishments are so overwhelming that they have to be continually minimized by the press and the Republican Party or they themselves would have to admit their own failure. They do not understand the change the president has wrought, nor do they understand the level of subtlety and quiet determination with which he operates. Their sole motivation is greed and power and so they are literally incapable of understanding motives higher than these. You put all of this together simply and with great insight. Thank you.

Ramya Ramana just tore the roof off! She delivered a powerful poem about the racism and classism Bloomberg had allowed to rot NYC. She welcomed Bill de Blasio with open arms and talked about the new hope that has filled the city. No more Black, Brown, Yellow, Red feeling marginalized and treated as outsiders in their own home. No more 1% screwing over everyone else. No more haves tearing at the fabric of society and leaving the have nots with nothing. No more Stop and Frisk.

Bloomberg’s face said it all. He was mad and that is a good thing.

Letitia James is delivering a powerful speech and she brought out Dasani, the girl profiled by the NYT.

James is speaking about inequality, the blatant racism of Stop and Frisk and how is must stop. She has pledged to make sure the 99% get their fair share and she will call out anyone who stands in the way of progress.

You hear that, Bloomberg? You’re leaving with shame.

Bubba was all about Bloomberg, Bill, and Hillary. He makes it so hard to like him or entertain the idea of Hillary 2016. He has some good qualities but that ego is too much. He acts like the Clintons are entitled to the white house. Ugh.

    • 112 Lovepolitics2008
      January 1, 2014 at 5:07 pm

Flattering all the egos he can so Hillary can have allies and friends for 2016. For years, the Clintons have been cultivating all the alliances they can among the american establishment. They meet much more often with the american “elite” than they meet with ordinary citizens.

I’m uncomfortable with that big time. However, if i want to be completely fair, when the Clintons arrived in Washington in 1992, they were treated with contempt by the “elite”, as if they didn’t “belong” in the White House. (Ring a bell ??). I can understand, from a tactical, and even psychological, point of view, that they made their goal to be “accepted” and not having to fight for legitimacy EVER AGAIN. It’s probably a sweet revenge for them right now to be considered as part of the “establishment”.

I don’t think the Obamas will have the same approach post presidency though. They’ll remain very close to their roots because they are, at heart, missionaries. Of the people and for the people. Just sayin’.

The Clintons need to go away – they can follow in the path of President Carter & work for the good of people all over the world – or they can follow GWB and paint pictures in the bath – but they have nothing left for the political life of the USA – nothing – and their achievements in the past don’t add up to anything to write home about – as I see it.

Bill Clinton has good qualities but his narcissism and ego tend to overshadow them. It’s me, me, me, me, me, Hillary, Hillary, me, me, me.

He had to make sure to praise Bloomberg and let him know the city will miss him. Nope. The greedy will, the 99% won’t.

This is partly what turned people off Hilary in the 2008 Dem primaries. The ego of Bill Clinton. And if he’s not careful, they are poised for a repeat of 2008 in 2016. People who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it – making the same mistakes.

I’m really concerned of the possibility of “Clinton fatigue” taking root in the part of the population needed to win elections: the independents and people who don’t follow politics closely but vote. “With their guts”.

We’re already seeing a couple of warning signs, in polls where Hillary seems vulnerable to Christie.

Hillary polled extremely well a year ago. But that was A YEAR ago and it’s an eternity in politics. There is still a looonnng way to go before the primaries and the presidential election of 2016. I think democrats should seriously consider an alternative to Hillary Clinton, in case she looses steam in the polls…

If, after all, Hillary Clinton is not the obvious choice, will democrats “draft” De Blasio at the last minute ? Is governor O’Malley making preparations just in case ? Or will Joe Biden get his chance for a 4 year only presidency, as a transition before a new democratic star ?

Insufferable Ruth Marcus…..a Certified PUMA and a Constant pain in the arse when criticizing pres Obama has finally had enough of the Snowden and GiGi combo? Hmm? Her best bud Rightwinger, fellow Law childhood BFF, Mona Charen, is now no longer amused by Snowden and Gigi? Hmm? So in 2014, a brand New Year, after having lost weight in 2013, Ruth Marcus is now singing a different TUNE? Wow.

Did Ruth Marcus finally listened to Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror? For the love of Commonsene, 2014 is starting off OK.

Headlines on today’s NY Times from first to third are “De Blasio draws all liberal eyes to NYC” “Millions gaining health coverage today under new law” and “Power curbed Detroit Mayor faces big job.”
So 2 out of three are blessings but there is a lot left to do in this country.
My personal wish today is for a federal minimum wage hike starting immediately and indexed to go up along with the economy. A number above ten dollars an hour would do great good for the American people.

Happy New Year all you O’s!!!! What a great first getting up day of 2014!!!!

Several musings before I go finish the lasagna and seafood fixings:

    1. The pic that heads this thread triggers an automatic naughty mat response.
    2. The pics of the Hawaiian vacation gives me a new appreciation of shaved ice.
    3. I missed the NYC swearing in ceremony and the poem I’m reading about here. Anyone have a link?
    4. I have shoveled 3 times since I awoke this morning and it looks as if I never even stepped outside. There’s still more on the way.

Take care everyone! I can tell already that this will be a great getting up year!! FORWARD!!!

Greetings to our beautiful and brilliant Chips and all of my TOD family. A most joyous new year to all of my TOD family here. A big hug to our Danny O.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and his family are going to bring new life to that city. What a beautiful way to start 2014 as well.

Many loving hugs to all who shared so many wonderful posts here. So beautiful. Just so much to be grateful for from our journey in 2013, but so much more collective work to start and finish in 2014. “A Year of Action.” President Barack Obama.

I am ready to get to work. I am also so very grateful and blessed to share with this most loving, intelligent, gifted, caring group of brilliant writers who bring me to tears of joy each and every day. Thank you so much Chips for having such a brilliant group to assist you in this beautiful space.

So lovely bright sunny weather from another part of your loving country, our west coast family. May warmth keep all of my TOD family members in a grateful, healthy, and joyous celebration within your space for 2014. Enjoy your day, TODers. (((((Much love to all of my family here)))))HZ

I wish you all Peace and Blessings for 2014 from sunny, but cold Santa Fe. Thank you for all your favorite moments. What a pleasure reading them all. How incredibly blessed we are to be living during the Obama Presidency. We Will Not Be Moved…that is the theme for our MLK event this year and it certainly applies to supporting our President in 2014. We got this, my friends! FORWARD!!!

While we were making our traditional New Year’s dinner (black eyed peas, pork, rice and collard greens) we received a phone call from a friend. Every year the University of New Mexico’s dept. of African American Studies holds a Black History Month kickoff luncheon. We were informed that the guest speaker this year is Sabrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother. Will definitely be there and will report back.

Magapie, are you out there and interested?

Africa, loved your brilliant reminder to never count President Obama out. Most people see that President Obama is trying to do his best to improve the conditions for everybody, not just the wealthy few. The media only shows the people that never really backed President Obama in the first place. Whenever he accomplishes something, which is often, it doesn’t take long for the media to pull out something that is debunked after 48 hours.

    Happy New Year to all!
