Early New Year’s Eve Chat

Dec. 31, 2012: “Following remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the fiscal cliff negotiations, the President greets a couple of OMB workers as he walked back across on West Executive Avenue as he walked back to the West Wing of the White House. He gave them an elbow-bump, because he had just put Purell on his hands.” (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Happy New Year, Chips, Faypax and SW and everybody else who’s up before the sun. Question of the day is how many Democratic fundraising e-mails we’ll get before midnight. I love Al Franken, but he seems to send one out every other hour. Hope everyone is feeling warm and hopeful today. Have a good final day of this roller coaster year.

Happy New Year’s Eve JackieG! Hope 2013 ends on a high note for you as well — for all of us for that matter.

Yes the fundraising emails are coming fast and furious. I counted 17 from yesterday. Like everyone else, I suspect today will be just as numerous if not more.

      Good morning TOD.
Yes! hf. This is such a big story and I am so excited to see you post this at the best news source around.
The NY Times had a Guantanamo story on the front page last week that was all lies of ommision and a few of commision.
The Times story gave the present detainee count wrong—-Neglecting to mention the 6 detainees that have been released recently.
This release brings the number to 11.
Two months ago (or so) there were 166 detainees. Down from 250+ when POTUS took office.
By my count we are now at 155.

In my view this is a promise on its way to being kept and i expect continuous news out of Guantanamo in 2014. Happy New Year!

Good Morning Chips and all of TOD!

It’s a busy week at work with me (Year End) so I’m just stopping by to wish you all a wonderful New Year.

Tally and VC I just had the opportunity to read your 2013 most memorable moments. You each did an awesome job. I loved them both. It’s my week to spend evenings helping D-I-L with the grand babies. They are doing so well. The tiny one (Tamara) had lost a pound the first week after her birth but after the home care visit yesterday I am happy to report that she has gained that pound back and they are both doing very well. They send their love to all their god mommies and daddies here at TOD.

    Now off to work….Later!

Ahh, Donna, what a wonderful way to spend your evenings–helping with the precious grand babies. Those first few weeks, we all come up with dozens of little worries about our babies’ growth, but they all usually manage to thrive at their own pace and bring us happy surprises every day.

Good Morning Everyone – 1 hr 10 minutes to New Year in my town. Fireworks should be going up in Sydney in about 10 minutes – must be online somewhere but the only site I can find is full of ads – so I’ll watch the TV and be back a little later

Almost too late for promises here jackie – I really had to search to see the fireworks – TV stations LOVE to pretend something is live – bringing the fireworks to my town an hour after they happened (my time is 1 hour later than Sydney, we don’t do daylight saving). Anyhow – I found them – very spectacular – Sydney is a truly beautiful city/harbor – one of the wonders of the world is the view flying into Sydney – I gather Rio is similar – but I haven’t been there.

    Here’s a morning musical tidbit:

To commemorate the release of his Complete Album Collection Box set, Bob Dylan has put out a new interactive video of his classic “Like a Rolling Stone.” It’s essentially a whole host of people lip synching to the song, but what’s innovative is that it’s set up as if you’re watching several cable networks. You click on the up and down arrows to switch between channels.

One of them is a classic music channel that looks like MTV with footage of Dylan singing the song himself. Others look like popular cable networks you might be familiar with. One of those is a kind of like HGTV, with none of than the hottie twins, Drew and Jonathan Scott (The Property Brothers).

Here’s an article about the video:

Since I don’t watch MSNBC, I can’t imagine what MHP could have said that would make her have to grovel in this way. But I DO know that I have heard certain hosts on MSNBC make nasty comments about PBO AND his family, and not have to offer a word that remotely sounds like an apology.

    • 61 Linda
      December 31, 2013 at 8:34 am

They made fun of Mitt Romney’s new AA grandson that one of his children adopted.

      • 62 hopefruit2
        December 31, 2013 at 8:40 am

I don’t think they were making fun of the child. They were mocking the Romney’s seeming need to parade this Black child as an accessory. I know where that joke is coming from. Nothing in Romney’s platform suggests that he gives a whit about the well-being of Blacks or Black children – and their culture, Romney’s policies and actions thus far have been unfriendly to Black people. None of the Romney boys would think of dating/marrying a woman of color, let alone a Black woman. So this adoption is seen for what it is. A damn meaningless stunt that deserves to be mocked.

MSNBC and all the media had their field day with that “selfie” and no one apologized to the Obama family or to the Mandela family.

      • 66 dotster3
        December 31, 2013 at 8:42 am

Not the best judgment there—–not sure why the adopted grandchild was made a humorous target. There are plenty of adult Romneys to ridicule if you’re still so inclined. But anyone who opens their hearts and home to an adopted child gets a pass in my book, and the innocent adopted child should be off limits.

        • 67 99ts
          December 31, 2013 at 8:46 am

It was the adults being ridiculed – had nothing to do with the child – only the RW media would think otherwise. I cannot believe that there is an outcry because someone called out the Romney family. They should be called out for everything they do – every day of the week. NO-ONE, but no-one has ever benefitted from the Romney family – except the Romney family.

          • 68 hopefruit2
            December 31, 2013 at 9:01 am

Exactly – the idea that the Romneys would adopt a black child out of altruism is absurd – given their history. The Romneys are only about themselves and their own advancement.

This is not Bill deBlasio or even John McCain (who has adopted trans-racially, and whose son is now married to to a woman of color). You can tell the difference between when people make decisions for publicity and political advancement versus when they do them out of their heart/soul.

                December 31, 2013 at 1:26 pm

My point is that the Romneys are using that child to gain publicity and also to make a “statement” about their attitudes towards race. This adoption was not borne out of sincerity or altruism. Thus criticisms and/or mockery of their publicity stunt are fair game.

When Jodi Kantor publicly attacked the Obama family as “staging” their family life, no one at the NY Times or on MSNBC called for her firing. In fact the entire media was in full-blown “lets-go-after-the-Obamas-for-their-pictures” mode.

          December 31, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I saw the show for I had DVR’ed. They made fun of Romney not Kieran, the biracial young child.

Joe Scarborough is at it again. Kieth Olberman was asking if any adult is running MSNBC any longer for they are using others’ policy….Keith O. charged……that perhaps, MSNBC should adopt it’s own policy.

MHP is biracial from a Mom who was raised Mormon and an elder sister with her whole family from her mother’s side totally Mormon. I doubt severely that she was making fun of the child. She was talking again…..HONESTLY about the Romney family and the absurdity of their type of DIVERSITY.

      • 73 99ts
        December 31, 2013 at 8:43 am

They did not – nothing was directed at the child – they spoke the truth – it was a humerous show – and the RWNJs as ever screamed about being attacked – they are insane and so is MSNBC for demanding all these apologies. When Romney apologizes to the President for his Birther remarks, his 47% remarks and every other low down revolting thing he ever said then maybe someone should be nice to him and his overprivileged wife and children – otherwise I would wish them out of the way of every sane American person.

This was said by Matthews over two years ago. The reason you don’t know about it is because only a few PBO supporters on TOD and Twitter were upset by it. This did not blow up into any major issue on MSNBC. Going after PBO and his family is fair game on MSNBC.

MHP was the biological offspring of an interracial union – she was not adopted, paraded around like an accessory and used by certain factions of the media as a ground for political attacks. So her situation is completely different from Romney’s adopted grandson.

The only reason MHP is apologizing is because she wants to keep her job. But I’m sure deep down she believes this adoption is utter B.S.

          • December 31, 2013 at 9:25 am

I watched the clip and I thought it was pretty tame. I did not like what Pia Glenn said at all because we are talking about an infant and generally I feel for the families of politicians. I agree with MHPs apology and hope that MSNBC leaves it at that. I also have a problem with the dog whistling and overt racism of the Romney campaign. It is that much worse given that he has a big platform to influence society such that it is worthy of all precious children including his grandson.

The ENTIRE right-wing and liberal media including MSNBC just a few weeks ago went after PBO’s marriage and family life – suggesting that everything we saw in the pictures were staged (remember the Jodi Kantor bit?), and nothing but a propaganda effort by Pete Souza.

I think we are both feeling the same hurt/anger/ire with this one hopefruit – I wrote above about all of these people belonging to the Palin “poor me” school of politics. They can give it out – but NEVER can take one iota of criticism. What was said – was true.

And as was discovered in Australia in the 1950s/1960s/70s – adopting black children into families of white european descent rarely has the outcome that the “do gooders” think it will/should have. Children will always seek their roots – regardless of how and where they are raised.

Dec 30 (Reuters) – Walgreen Co said on Monday it will provide a month’s supply of certain prescriptions at no upfront cost to U.S. participants who have not yet received a plan identification number under President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law.

The offering comes as U.S. government officials struggle to roll out the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Myriad enrollment problems have dogged the site’s website, HealthCare.gov, since its October launch and many insurance companies have said they are not getting accurate enrollee information to be able to process required forms.

Walgreen, the largest drug store chain in the United States, said customers who have enrolled in Obamacare, but don’t have an ID yet from an insurer, can bring proof of their enrollment from now through the end of January to a Walgreen’s pharmacy.

The pharmacy staff will verify their enrollment and provide up to a month of generic medication at no upfront cost, the company said in a statement.

As soon as the customer receives the ID number, Walgreen will process the insurance claim and the customer at that time may be responsible for any co-pay, Walgreen spokeswoman Markeisha Marshall said.

The company wanted to make sure customers had no interruption in their prescriptions, Marshall said.

Walgreen said it was working with the White House and other federal agencies about Obamacare’s implementation. The company said its offer does not include so-called “complex therapy medications.”

I am glad the MHP has gotten called out on that segment with Mitt Romney. That was bad form on her part and she should apologize on Saturday.

Because someone said the truth – when the GOP media NEVER apologizes for the lies they tell forever about President Obama, his family and his administration. How about someone calls out Palin for the never ending hate speech, McCain for attempting to ruin US foreign policy and every GOP politician for hating on the poor.

MHP should NEVER have apologized – Romney was a birther in regards to where the President was born – has he apologized for that? or for the 47% or for talking about “those people”??

I disagree strongly with your assessment of the situation. Ever heard of “Free Speech”?

Slimjim, I don’t think MHP had anything to apologize for.
