Chips, I think it’s good you’re in a holiday mood. Everybody deserves a break from routine and this is the time of year we work so hard to get to. I look around and see all the things I need to get to and then shrug and look away. I..just..don’t..feel..like..it. I read about a mother of a large family who let everyone indulge and laze around through the whole Christmas holiday and then when she thought they’d had enough, she set bowls of plain beans at each person’s place at dinner. The beans were to say, “time to get back to work.” I’m not ready for the beans yet and happy you aren’t either.

    • December 30, 2013 at 8:04 am

Moooorning Jackie! πŸ™‚ Love that! I’ll have the beans ready for Jan 3-ish, then we’ll all get back to work – until then, we’ll laze on!

I liked a moment on the Today Show, which I never get to say. Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley are back, for old times sake, and they and Matt Lauer etc. were listing their top 10 news stories of the year. When “government shut-down” was mentioned, Gumbel said he had that on his list too, but he said he rightly calls it the “GOP shut-down”. He said everyone refers to it as the government shut down, which is a false identifier, that it was a GOP faction (tea party conservatives) in congress who were solely responsible. Thank you for some truth, Bryant.

They both look terrific, by the way, and it’s been 25 years since they hosted. I was reminded how much better the Today Show/ news was back then, when TV news people cared about the truth, felt that responsibility for what they were reporting. Loved Gumbel’s correction today.

      December 30, 2013 at 9:09 am

Bravo to Bryant Gumbel. We don’t have real journalism like that today. With people Matt Lauer it’s all about well they both do it.

given MS Robin Roberts statement over the weekend, this interview with PBO came back to my mind.

    In retrospect, what a huge moment this must have been for her to hear the POTUS (and especially this POTUS – President Obama) say this from the White House and to say it to her;

I think this is one interview others here can use to “gently” remind the world WHY we love, admire and respect PBO – please help out if you are so inclined

Not sad about this news, even if that sounds harsh. Tx. billionaire Harold Simmons dies. He was the main funder of the Swiftboat Vets who attacked Kerry, donated millions to defeat Obama both times, including $26 million to Romney’s super pac in 2012, calling Obama “the most dangerous American alive”. He managed to donate to some decent causes too, but that does not make up for all the wrongheaded damage he did/attempted, giving millions to GOP interests and candidates—-major donor to Tx. Gov. Perry also.

Just for the record…Chips, I love this holiday mode at TOD…glad to see that everyone is just enjoying hanging out…no pressure…..I didn’t DVR the Kennedy Center Honors last night because, you know…Breaking Bad….but I hope that we’ll get the chance to see them in their entirety here sometime…

*The 7 million private enrollment figure was a projection by the CBO about how many people they *expected* to enroll by 3/31/14, not an actual “success threshold”. However, this number has been inextricably baked into the public consciousness as the “bar for success” so that’s what’s being used as a “target” number.

Yet the media continues to claim this number comes out of the Administration and pretends we don’t know how many have signed up through the State exchanges……..

(I have my organizing member sticker on my refrigerator already along with an extra bumper sticker from Obama/Biden 2012.)
The issue was when confirming my donation a screen came up about update/don’t update my info and then 2 e-mails confirming donation and another one that my account had been updated. What? I must be missing something but obviously it can’t be too important. As long as $$$ go to OFA all is good, right?

I have some problems with the “most admired” poll that was just released this morning. Yes, according to the poll, PBO is the most admired man but the rest leaves a lot to be desired.

First of all, GWB shouldn’t be anywhere near the top and the fact that he’s 2nd bothers me immensely. Hillary Clinton being 1st for 18 times straight is also concerning. I have to ask WHO exactly is being polled for the last 18 yrs (a whole generation grows up in 18 years) and role models should evolve accordingly – if the country is progressing. We’ve seen many new female role models, and I have a hard time believing that HRC, who has not been all that visible in the American public domain is ALWAYS at the top of this list for the last 18 years. It seems to me that this is a GOP/MSM’s wish list of politics disguised as a “most admired” poll, and of course they throw in PBO there for credibility, while carefully taking the time to mention his “tumbling poll numbers” as well as his supposedly declining percentage in this “most admired” poll.

    • 128 Linda

Yes…all this and the fact that SP’s name was mentioned? WTF!! They search out the answers they want to see…..All fine that PBO was most admired, but still wacko…GWB and SP should never see the light of day where “admiration” is considered. EVER. Unless it’s admired for being an idiot and an ass on the world stage. And a liar. They are both accomplished in that regard.

I totally agree with you. Nancy Pelosi was first woman Speaker, and third in line to the Presidency. She was instrumental in passing healthcare reform, and a partner to President Obama in accomplishing his first term agenda. Hillary may never get that close to the Presidency, or be as productive.

Just in case you have some nutcase uncle in your family that will go on and on about lightbulbs being banned by Obummer (you know how “witty” they are!) You can share this: http://www.energy.ca.gov/lightbulbs/lightbulb_faqs.html

Is California banning incandescent light bulbs?

No. California is implementing a new energy efficiency standard for incandescent bulbs that will save consumers money by replacing the least efficient incandescent bulbs with more efficient ones.

    What is the new standard?

A former 100-watt light bulb manufactured on or after January 1, 2011 and sold in California will have to use 72 watts or less. The 72-watt replacement bulb will provide the same amount of light (called “lumens”) for lower energy cost.

How did these regulations come about?

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) – passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush – created new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs. The law is designed to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and make the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources of energy. The entire country will adopt this standard on January 1, 2012. EISA allowed California to implement the national standard one year earlier.

Why do I give you this head’s up?? Because I have one of these in MY FAMILY…. Ca has been 1 year ahead of the rest of the country…Jan 1 is the rest of the country’s turn. No lightbulbs are being banned….just made more efficient. Since they don’t understand the meaning of “more efficient” they will paint this as being something BAD…that the big, bad dictator did to us….You know the drill. Honestly…there wouldn’t be enough duct tape in the world for my plan.

df, thanks for taking the time to post this here.

Prince Harry (another favorite of Chips by the way) is clearly savoring the FLOTUS experience here.

Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), who is seeking reelection in the state’s 39th congressional district, mistakenly filed to run in the 40th district on Dec. 23, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Royce, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, currently represents the 39th district, which covers parts of Orange County, eastern Los Angeles County and southwestern San Bernardino County. But he represented the 40th district from 2003 to 2013, and the 39th district from 1993 to 2003, perhaps explaining his confusion.

“He’s running in the 39th,” Royce consultant Dave Gilliard told the Bee, attributing the error to a typo. Royce’s campaign amended the filing on Friday.

The 40th district, which was redrawn in 2010 to include portions of Los Angeles County, has a 47 percent Democratic registration advantage and is represented by incumbent Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.).
