23 Million Thanks!

It’s been an amazing year at TOD, so many new visitors, so many good friends who’ve been here along the way, so it’s completely lovely to celebrate you all by getting to (a highly random) 23 million hits before the year’s end – which is mind-boggling.

Endless thanks to you all, especially to UT for her fantastic work through the year, and to blog tyrants Liberal Librarian, Lovely Plains, Zizi and even Amk for making TOD what it is.

You are mighty mighty people!

A few months ago, the people of Switzerland put a referendum on the ballot for a basic income. This proposal would issue for every adult person in the nation a monthly government stipend of ~$2,200-$2,700 US dollars per month. This basic income would come without any means testing, just money to every adult from the day they turn of age till the day they die. With a guaranteed basic income, work would no longer be required to survive, poverty would be eliminated in one move. Where did they get this radical idea?

Would you believe the idea for a basic income for all came from a founding father of the United States?

Thomas Paine, one of our founding fathers, proposed a basic income in “Agrarian Justice.”
The origin of this basic income idea comes from the piece “Agrarian Justice” by Thomas Paine. In it, he proposed a dividend to get started in life, and a stipend for all who came of age. To fund this, his proposal was to create a national fund paid for by a flat 10% income tax for all money earned, if from labor or from business or financial transactions. He rightly understood that money from such a fund would still be spent, and that would require businesses to continue operating, paying for employees, etc.

The Swiss proposal for a Basic Income would start once a person reached the age of maturity and last until they passed on. There would be no means testing, so this basic income would apply to rich and poor alike. This would eliminate other anti-poverty programs, and lower overhead costs in the process. In effect, it would create a new paradigm.

    and in other news…..

    ‘Paul Ryan lectures the pope’

‘It’s true that while knuckle-draggers like Rush Limbaugh attack the pope as a Marxist, Ryan has praised him, which I guess takes a tiny bit of courage since normally Republicans don’t like to buck the leader of their party. “What I love about the pope is he is triggering the exact kind of dialogue we ought to be having,” Ryan told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “People need to get involved in their communities to make a difference, to fix problems soul to soul.”

But he couldn’t suppress either his right-wing politics or his supreme capacity for condescension for very long. “The guy is from Argentina, they haven’t had real capitalism in Argentina,” Ryan said (referring to the pope as “the guy” is a nice folksy touch.) “They have crony capitalism in Argentina. They don’t have a true free enterprise system.” ‘

yes it’s by joan walsh, but she holds nothing back in slamming lyin’ ryan here.

Such good tidings over the last 24 hours.

Absolutely LOVE Linda’s (What Is Working) thrilling description her whirlwind fantasy party at the White House.

Her slide show made you feel like you were actually there, along with Linda and Shirley (I’m sure Linda hears “Laverne and Shirley” all the time, always loved Laverne’s sweaters with the huge embroidered L). So thrilled for both of you, so glad you invited us along.

I couldn’t agree more with Thomas Cahill on this core reality. Limbaugh, Hannity, Ryan, Boehner, et all can yell “Marxist,” “Communist,” whatever until they drop from exhaustion, but what terrifies them and their plutocrat masters is that Pope Francis speaks and ACTS as a Christian.

The more that reality seeps in, the more desperate they will become because they know how tightly aligned with President Obama’s view of humanity and public service the Pope’s words and deeds are.

    Yes We Can

    • 108 jackiegrumbacher
      December 27, 2013 at 10:08 pm

The American right twisted the concept of Christianity so that it would extol greed, promote exploitation and foster intolerance. And the sad thing is millions of Americans bought it because it fed into their own desires, prejudices and self- justifications. Pope Francis is telling the world that real Christianity is difficult, selfless, and compassionate. It’s no wonder he’s making people uncomfortable. So instead of trying to rethink their own prejudices, they will attack the pope so they can feel justified in never having to change.

    HealthCare.gov: Meeting the Mark

Julie Bataille, Director of Communications, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
    Friday, December 27, 2013

December 24 and the days leading up to it were critically important for enrollment in Marketplace coverage.

There’s no question that, over this past weekend, Monday, and Tuesday, HealthCare.gov met the mark and did exactly what it was supposed to do–helping Americans from across the country find secure, quality health insurance coverage at an affordable price.

Over this four-day period, response time averages held steady at about a half second and page error rates were low at less than half a percent.

Monday, December 23, was our peak day. On Monday, the site was supporting 83,000 concurrent users while our queuing system was up, and it performed as designed. For those queued, wait times were generally less than five to ten minutes and users were given the option of receiving an email telling them when they could come back and get right in. There were 129,000 people who took advantage of this opportunity and were invited back the same day to finish their applications.

On Christmas Eve, the site had a total of 880,000 visits, with no queuing.

The call center also received a high volume of calls on Monday and Tuesday, with 317,000 calls received on Christmas Eve alone.

We’re going to do everything we can to ensure a smooth transition period for consumers whose coverage begins on January 1. And we’re going to continue to work to ensure every American who still wants to enroll in Marketplace coverage by the end of the open enrollment period is able to do so.

If consumers have any questions regarding their coverage, they should call the insurer of their choice to, among other things, confirm enrollment or arrange payment of premiums, or the Marketplace call center at 1-800-318-2596. They can log in to their account to find out their insurer’s customer service line or browse through a directory on HealthCare.gov.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also has developed a number of consumer tips and fact sheets (under “Fact Sheets”) to help consumers understand their new coverage such as what consumers should know about going to their doctor or getting emergency care.

We’ve seen the important progress made on HealthCare.gov, and we are going to keep working to make sure the consumer experience continues to improve throughout the open enrollment period.
