Morning, Dotster! Granddaughter is still sleeping, I take it, or you mightn’t have had time for the village. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Wishing all of the Dotster family a terrific Dec 24th celebration once the ball starts a-rolling. Give grand-d an extra kiss and tell her some of us are still waiting for grandma to master picture-share.

Morning Chips and all early risers. Starting to feel that Christmas thing in the air today. Woke up with the special of excitement that just the idea of Christmas Eve always creates. Half of my family makes Christmas Eve the big day with feasts and present opening. The other half–mine–waits to savor it all on Christmas day. No matter how many decades go by, that little magic is always there. Anybody else make Christmas Eve the day, or do you wait? Funny Note: I have a nutcracker man standing on one side of our fireplace and a snowman with lights on the other. Our little granddaughter–the same height as either of them–loved the nutcracker, but backed up in alarm when she saw the snowman. Go figure.

I’m so glad to see the president smiling and relaxed–mostly for his own sake, but also because it’s got to rankle those who thought he would be depressed and exhausted at the end of his so-called “bad” year. He’s way too polite to literally spit in their eye (lovely thought), but he sticks it to them in his own inimitable way. Have a great day!!!!!

Merry Christmas Eve Chips and TOD. It’s so great to see our President’s wonderful smile that we all know and love.

    • December 24, 2013 at 8:59 am

Yes, the golf course is the one place where he can be out in fresh air, surrounded by green and without SS hunching over his back. So I imagine that may be one of the reasons he’s taken to it. Being in Hawaii must bring him the sort of relaxation he loves, the exact opposite of the uptight institutions of DC.

I don’t know if it’s aging, or just a ‘curmudgeon’ personality, but I swear that I find a lot of our habits (as parents) really bizarre, not to mention contradictory. Happy Christmas Eve everybody.

May the true meaning of Christmas (not the Sarah Palin meaning) spread throughout the world. One doesn’t have to be a Christian to spread the feelings of peace, tolerance, helping others and knowing that even the least among us has special value in this world. Although I am a devout Catholic, I know that no faith or non-faith has a monopoly on on those values.

Thuis may be a little weird Christmas for us. My wife, a nurse who received her flu shot, has come down with the flu. Last night she felt like she was on death’s door, but today is doing a little better. But she may not be able to make mass tonight, which is something we haven’t missed in years. Plus, tomorrow morning we are supposed to go to my son’s house for a brunch with hin, our d-i-l and her family. But, specially since she is pregnant, this may not happen.

But Christmas is truly something that is there within one and does not need to be celebrated with others in person. That adds to the celebration, but not being together
    does not negate it.

Finally, a special request. Later today, when I get home, I want to try to post some You Tube videos of Christmas songs from a group I just found out about, but I have trouble posting videos. Can someone give me a step-by-step instructions for dummies on how to do that?

Positive Black Male News: Detroit mailman saves familyโ€™s burning home, continues on delivery route
By Randy Wimbley, Fox 2 News

He wonโ€™t admit it but one Detroit neighborhood mailman is a hero now. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t say a hero,โ€ Darrian Crutcher says, hoping to set the record straight. But others see it differently.

Tuesday morning Detroit firefighters responded to a house fire on Stansbury Street. When they arrived they found Crutcher upstairs putting the fire out with the homeโ€™s garden hose.

The homeowner, Carolyn Patterson, lit incense and thatโ€™s believed to have started the fire.

โ€œIt was a blessing for me to be at that spot at that particular time,โ€ Crutcher says. His quick thinking saved Pattersonโ€™s home and, possibly, her life.

โ€œIt really was burning,โ€ Patterson tells Fox 2โ€ฒs Randy Wimbley.

Crutcher tells us he got the hose from the side of the house, took it inside and hooked it up there and began to fight the fire.

Pierce posted this yesterday but I didn’t see it until this morning.

Excellent read on the hypocrisy of Congress and hits on part of the reason I was againsgt the budget deal:

This decision was consciously taken by a Congress soaked in electorally convenient religiosity. This decision was consciously taken by a Congress so soaked in electorally convenient religiosity that its members believe that people — other people, naturally, and their children — will be strengthened in their moral character by completely avoidable deprivation. That the mothers and fathers out there, avoiding the gazes of their children because of the simple expectations there that they cannot meet, will be better, stronger, and moral people for the pain that causes them to look away as the lights on the tree begin to blur with their tears. That, in 2014, these people will thank the Congress of the United States for forging this completely unnecessary crucible in which their souls can be forged into sterner stuff. This is what this Congress believes, as it goes home proud of itself and its members dress themselves to sing the midnight carols with no conscience sounding in counterpoint, and this is Christmas in America, and it is the year of our Lord, 2013.

All right then we are two nations.

I’m glad to see the President enjoying himself. Since right wing haters is always talking about how much it is costing the taxpayers for him to go on his vacations, let me say this, this taxpayer says to the President, First Lady, Malia, Sasha, Bo, Sunny, enjoy your Christmas vacation, it’s on me. A taxpayer who rather pay for a President and his family vacation, then a President unnecessary wars. Merry Christmas to the Obamas.

      • 98 carolyn
        December 24, 2013 at 9:51 am

Yes, anniebella, vacations cost MUCH less than wars do! I’m just thrilled to see him looking relaxed and smiling so big!

I read Charles Pierce’s editorial, and noticed that he quoted from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. How appropriate. He clearly gave the reason this play is resonating so much this season with people, as I’ve read. “Are there no workhouses, are there no prisons?”

On a brighter note, we woke up to a surprise here today…..light snow. Forecast was freezing fog, and maybe this is how fog freezes, but it is lovely, but not icy. A neat surprise for the kids.

Hope everyone has a wonderful few days. I read about so many wonderful celebrations in the making. We will be going to our son’s house tomorrow in Dallas to be with grandkids.

See you all on the flip side!!!

I saw where the media is saying that President greatest achievement is also his biggest failure. Wait just a minute, I didn’t know Obamacare was a failure. I know it has had rocky roll out, but that’s not a failure. Not in my book, it is in the media’s book because they hate the President, and their agenda is to be negative and do the GOP dirty work. The Affordable Care Act Obamacare is not a failure. And that’s a fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. 108 japa21
    December 24, 2013 at 10:26 am

Upthread, I postyed a link to one of Pierce’s excellent posts. This is the follow-up.

But this is the argument in season over these holidays. That the poor must suffer in order to be redeemed. That hunger is a moral test to be endured. That only through pain can we hope. What doesn’t destroy you, etc. Santa Nietzsche is coming to town. The idea that we should — hell, that we must — act out of charity for each other through the institutions of self-government is lost in the din of a frontal system of moral thunderation aimed at everyone except the person who is out there thunderatin’ on behalf of personal-trainer Jesus, who wants us to work, work, work on that core. That was the way that government operated once before; the specific institutions that Scrooge mentions, and with which the Spirit eventually reproaches him in his own words – the prisons, the union workhouses, the treadmill, and the Poor Laws – were all government institutions based on the same basic philosophy that drives the debate over the food stamp program today.(We even seem to be going back to debtor’s prisons.) We have speeches on self-reliance given by government employees to people who increasingly have only themselves on whom to rely, day after grinding day. It is a way to keep the poor from having a voice in their own self-government. It is a way to keep the wrath of the boy at bay. There will be a reckoning, one way or another. But it can be staved off by platitudes, and by verses from Scripture wrenched from the obvious context of the Gospels. The sepulchers brighten whitely while the bones inside grow increasingly corrupt. This is what this Congress believes, as it goes home proud of itself and its members dress themselves to sing the midnight carols with no conscience sounding in counterpoint, and this is Christmas in America, and it is the year of our Lord, 2013.

All right then we are two nations.

This is an excellent putdown of those who thought Snowden should have been Time’s Person of the Year instead of Pope Francis:
