Sasha often looks reflective and serious. Maybe it’s just how she’s wired. She does not smile a lot.

          December 23, 2013 at 10:49 am

It only appears that way due to the fact that PBO and Malia smile WAY more than usual. Compare PBO to other male politicians of his stature, and compare Malia to other teenage girls. You will note the difference immediately.

            December 23, 2013 at 11:47 am

Exactly. When Malia was twelve, thirteen, fourteen even, she didn’t smile that much in public. As she is getting older, she is more at ease in public appearances. She often flashes that marvelous smile she inherited from her father. (She looks so much like him, doesn’t she ?)

Barack and Michelle Obama are doing a magnificent job with their girls. They have succeeded in giving them a normal life despite the extraordinary circumstances they are experiencing. Malia and Sacha behave as normally as millions of american teenagers. And it’s a wonderful thing.

          December 23, 2013 at 10:47 am

Could she be depressed? What make you think that? How about she just wasn’t in the smiling mood. Nothing more, nothing less.

      • 13 hopefruit2
        December 23, 2013 at 10:40 am

I think it’s inappropriate to diagnose someone as being “depressed” based on a picture. Depression is a serious medial condition that requires comprehensive evaluation by trained professionals. Furthermore nothing in Sasha’s expression is indicative of anything other than a 12 yr old who’s just either intensely focused on a game, or simply bored while watching it.

UAE court convicts eight over ‘spoof documentary video’

Six foreigners and two UAE citizens have been sentenced to up to a year in jail for making what they say is a spoof video about Dubai youth culture.

A state security court found them guilty of “defaming the UAE society’s image abroad”, according to the state-owned newspaper, The National.

The family of American Shezanne Cassim, confirmed he was one of the six jailed for a year, three of them in absentia.

The foreigners were the first to be charged under a 2012 cybercrimes law.

It provides a legal basis to prosecute people who use information technology to criticise senior officials, argue for political reform or organise unlicensed demonstrations.

The defendants were reportedly accused of violating Article 28, which calls for imprisonment for anyone who uses information technology “with the intent of inciting to actions, or publishing or disseminating any information, news, caricatures, or other images liable to endanger state security and its higher interests or infringe on the public order”.

The 19-minute video, entitled Satwa Combat School, was posted on YouTube in October 2012.

It opens with the explanatory text: “The following events are fictional and no offence was intended to the people of Satwa or UAE.”

Had a wonderful, joyous, fabulous, exhausting day with our grandbaby before they all had to drive back for work today. We ended the day with a trip to the Hersey sweet lights, which were like a wonderland to her. Fifteen months ago, we had given up on the idea of grandchildren and now a tiny bundle lights up our lives. All is quiet today, a dense fog hangs outside the window and we’re meeting up with some dear–older–friends. So life goes on–the old and the new, the young and the old. Have a great day, everyone. And remember Santa comes for all of us.

The same way the Media has always portrayed people of color……Nothing has changed. The root of their severe case of ODS. Is there any surprise that in the Age, Era of pres Obama, we see less News, factually based and more stereotypical pronouncements and combined with LESS AA on TV?

And the Obama ADM is accused of propaganda, limiting media access?

Just look at the excuses the DC/NY Journos are now making about Duck Dynasty……Justine S……etc whenever Black folks are attacked or wickedly dehumanized.

They are also manipulating the polls.

The sample numbers and demography changed. Why? Most Americans are not the least supporting the TBGOPers. But only the angst against pres Obama are talked about 24/7.

So long as Dems sit out and take the onslaught, the media lies continue.

I was listening to Ari Shapiro say how Obama had such a terrible year on NPR this morning while getting dressed etc. usually I just go turn the radio off, but this morning I was forced to listen. The title is misleading. The conclusion is opinion based not factual based and there are voice tones used to manipulate the listener to downplay the counter facts presented much like the propaganda used by politicians and by people wording and giving polls.

I remember while I was in about eighth grade we had a class dealing with recognizing ploys to persuade. They were even named like The Bandwagon Effect. This unit taught students how to discern and to be wary when these techniques were used on them. I remember also seeing how you had to read the entire news article since the heading might not reflect the synopsis of what facts were given. I think this class is needed today. I bet the public could be manipulated away from supporting it though.

    Essence Of Sense Of Humor

It’s the rarest of the commodities
It’s a gift possessed by few
Yes I’m talking about sense of humor
It has an essence that’s absolutely new
    People having this rarest quality
Can turn the things all upside down
Making a mockery of most serious cases
They would hardly let you frown
That’s the color it brings to life
That’s the essence of sense of humor
The energy it brings to others and self
Is way beyond all jokes and rumor

    You can master the circumstances
    You can nullify the negativity
You need not be a professional
It’s only a matter of creativity
    It diffuses the negative energy
    And infuses the positive
It gives us a new direction
To be a little more sensitive
All tears can turn to smiles
With a small pinch of humor
    People will remember you forever
That’s the essence of sense of humor.

Howdy all you O’s!!! Another great getting up day in TODville!!!

Here’s the last holiday groaner. Consider yourselves pun-ished:

The most accurate weatherman ever lived in the U.S.S.R. in 1949.

He’s always had a 100% accuracy rate for his forecasts of the Russian weather conditions. His people loved him and respected him for his faultless foresight. He was particularly good at predicting rain. One night, despite clear skies, he made the prediction on the 6:00pm news broadcast that a violent storm was approaching. It would flood the town in which he and his wife lived. He warned the people to take proper precautions and prepare for the worst.

After he arrived home later that evening, his wife met him at the door and started arguing with him that his weather prediction was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard. This time, she said to him “Rudy, you made a terrible mistake. There’s not a cloud anywhere within 10 miles of the village.” As a matter of fact, that day had been the most beautiful day that the town had ever had and it was quite obvious to everyone it simply wasn’t going to rain.

Rudy told her she was to be quiet and listen to him. If he said it was going to rain, IT WAS GOING TO RAIN. He had all of his Russian heritage behind him and he knew what he was talking about. She argued that although he came from a proud heritage, IT STILL WASN’T GOING TO RAIN.

They argued back and forth for hours , so much that they went to bed mad at each other.

During the night, sure enough one of the worst rainstorms hit the village the likes of which they had never seen. That morning when Rudolf and his wife arose, they looked out the window and saw all the water that had fallen that night.

“See,” he said, “I told you it was going to rain.”

His wife admitted: “Once again your prediction came true. But I want to know, just how were you so accurate?”

To which he replied, “You see…

Rudolf, the Red, knows rain, dear!”

Yes, GROOOOOOOAN. Which is what makes it so darn good. I am a lover of puns. My grandfather could not let a sentence go by without including one and I have tried to follow in his footsteps. I have never (well maybe never is too strong a word) been prouder than when one of my grandsons started telling puns.

New Public Policy Polling surveys in 4 key swing Congressional districts (CA-31, CO-6, IL-13 and MI-1), as well as Speaker John Boehner’s home district, “find overwhelming bipartisan opposition to cutting off extended unemployment benefits at the end of this year. Voters say they would be inclined to punish their already vulnerable representatives at the polls next year if they vote to cut off benefits.”

Key finding: “Anywhere from 63-68% of voters in the five districts support continuing unemployment benefits with only 28-34% OK with cutting them…This is a rare issue in this polarized political climate where we find agreement across party lines.”

For Japa and Carolyn in case you missed them:

    1. A man had an unusual dental problem recently. About a month ago he had to have a small steel plate inserted in his mouth. A week later he noticed the plate was starting to rust. The dentist asked him if he had a change in his eating or drinking habits that may have caused the problem. The man explained that he had tried hollandaise sauce for the first time recently and liked it so much he put it on everything. The dentist advised that the solution was to remove the steel plate and replace it with a chrome plate. When the man asked why chrome the dentist replied…..

“There is no plate like chrome for the hollandaise!”

    2. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said……

“I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.”

    3. One of rock and roll’s earliest – and greatest – rock performers was
the incomparable Buddy Holly. Despite his bespectacled, nerdy
appearance, the man really knew how to ignite an audience. In fact,
the folks who attended Buddy’s performances got so excited that many
of his concerts ended with a riot. Just as soon as the fans saw that
Buddy had performed the closing song, they would fly into a
collective rage, smash chairs, storm the stage, and tear down the
curtain. So no theater owner would hire Buddy because they feared
    that their patrons would…

wreck the halls, with bows of Holly.

    4. Good King Wenceslas rings up a local pizza restaurant to order a pizza.
“Certainly your majesty” says the manager “will it be your usual?…..

    Deep pan, crisp and even?”
