The Obamas arrive in Hawaii

The Week Ahead:

Sun, sea, sand and sleep, hopefully.

The First Family is scheduled to return on Jan. 5 to Washington, D.C., according to the White House. There are no public events scheduled for their stay in Hawaii.

Steve Benen: ACA enrollment ‘surging’ in December

The Obama administration has long hoped that Affordable Care Act enrollment would follow a predictable trajectory: the totals would start slow, then pick up steam as the website improves and deadlines draw closer. At this point, the model is proving to be pretty accurate:

States running their own Obamacare insurance exchanges are reporting a significant surge in sign-ups just four days before the first major enrollment deadline. The increase has ranged from 30 percent to 40 percent in the past few weeks….

New York is enrolling about 4,500 people a day. In California, it’s 15,000 a day. In Kentucky, which has become something of a national model for implementation, enrollment totals are up 40% since Thanksgiving.

….. It would appear far-right calls for Americans to stay uninsured on purpose, just to satisfy conservative ideological goals, aren’t going over especially well.

LA Times: Another day, another leak from Issa, another credulous news report

The sun has risen in the East, so there must be a news report somewhere quoting a partial transcript leaked by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) purporting to show the shortcomings of Obamacare.

Bingo! We have not one but two “investigative” news reports, from CBS and ABC, based on the same partial transcript. And both, consequently, have the same level of credibility: none. CBS News even offers a dividend — a thoroughly dishonest and discreditable interview with Issa himself…..

ThinkProgress: Nearly Four Million Low-Income Americans Now Have Health Coverage Under Obamacare

About 1.7 million poor Americans looking for health coverage were deemed eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in November, according to new government data released on Friday. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also revised previous estimates that about 1.5 million people qualified for Medicaid or CHIP in October up to 2.1 million. All told, that means that just under four million low-income Americans now have access to public health insurance.

Steve Benen: Economic growth picks up steam

When the initial estimates for economic growth in the third quarter – covering July, August, and September – were released in early November, the figures exceeded expectations. Now that the totals have been revised twice, the GDP numbers turned out to be much better than than originally thought:

The U.S. economy expanded at a 4.1% annual clip in the third quarter, the strongest performance in two years … The Commerce Department previously reported that gross domestic product had risen at a 3.6% annual rate. Consumer spending rose 2% instead of 1.4% as previously reported….

To put this number in a slightly larger context, note that 4.1% quarterly growth is the second strongest growth we’ve seen since the start of the Great Recession nearly six years ago. What’s more, this is only the third time in the last nine years that the GDP has topped 4%.

The People’s View: How Has Barack Obama Disappointed YOU in 2013? – Outrage From A Parallel Reality

On Wednesday, NPR’s Liz Halloran told us how Barack Obama has disappointed liberals in 2013, how this was the year of disappointing the liberal base. Immediately, her comment section filled with Lefties panting and falling over themselves to declare how correct she is. And really, when hasn’t he, if you ask whoever this ever illusive “liberal base” is. So disappointing. How disappointing has Obama been to his liberal base? Oh, let me count the ways.

…. I implore you, liberals. Stick to your gut feelings. Stick to truthiness. Even if a preponderance of the evidence points to 2013 being a remarkably liberal year for President Obama and his administration, stick your head in the sand and yell about the NSA and drones. You don’t need evidence, facts, or data. All you need is a conservative columnist yanking your chain so you can lose your sh*t.

Steve Benen: Giving new meaning to ‘Do-Nothing’ Congress

If all goes according to plan, the Senate should wrap up its work for 2013 today and join the House on a holiday break. For his part, President Obama will sign the budget agreement into law before the end of the year, too.

And when he does, that will bring the grand total of bills signed into law in the 113th Congress to … 58…

…. The historic metrics are rather striking: 2013 was the least productive for any Congress since clerks on the Hill started keeping track, and this Congress is on track to pass fewer laws than any modern Congress.

You know, BuzzFeed is beginning to make GOPolitico look fair and balanced – this is hilarious:

ThinkProgress: BuzzFeed Declares Paul Ryan A ‘Champion Of The Poor,’ Offers No Supporting Evidence

If your only recent impressions of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) came from BuzzFeed, you’d be inclined to think that the former vice presidential candidate has made a major shift in policy to start focusing on poverty in the United States. You would be wrong.

On Friday, BuzzFeed ran a glowing profile of Ryan, entitled “Paul Ryan Finds God,” that portrayed him as a man who was inspired by religion and the ascendancy of a new pope to become a caretaker for the nation’s poor. But the piece, similar to another article that ran in the Washington Post last month, offered up no substance to show that Ryan’s policies have changed or that his religious outlook is any different than it was during the 2012 campaign. Rather, it relied on quotes from Paul Ryan’s own supporters — former campaign staffers and members of President George W. Bush’s cabinet — to demonstrate that Ryan has shifted his focus.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was released from the hospital Friday afternoon, his office announced:

“Senator Reid has been released from the hospital and is back at home with his wife, Landra. As previously stated, he went to the hospital as a precaution,” Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. “The doctors diagnosed him as exhausted, not anything more serious, and have cleared him to go back to work. He spent today resting, talking to family, friends and colleagues, reading the news and discussing Senate business. He appreciates the kind words and thoughts sent by so many, thanks the doctors at George Washington University Hospital for the excellent care he received, and wishes everyone a Happy Holidays.”

ThinkProgress: Ten Women’s Health Heroes Who Inspired Us In 2013

This past year included an overwhelming number of attacks on reproductive health and freedom, including some of the harshest abortion bans this country has seen since Roe v. Wade. However — despite the persistent attempts to silence, shame, and police women and their bodies — there is one positive benefit resulting from the ongoing War on Women. It gave rise to several champions who didn’t back down from fighting for the issues that matter. Here are ten people who inspired us in 2013….

Not for the first time I entered a long comment on the bottom of an expiring thread.
I think the topic is important enough for me to restate it.

First time ever watching the Steve Kornacki show. And the last time.
Even though ACA enrollments have now exceeded 5 million with 1.4 private insurance signups, Obamacare is not on the menu in this 2 hour show.

Now they are enjoying a game show segment. Previously the show featured a long bit about Brian Schweitzer and then GOP primaries including mentions of Sharon Angle and Christine O’Donnell.

Meta hopefruit Claire dotster and amk all commented on cable’s dwindling viewership.
Maybe it’s because so called news shows do very little news.
It is largely propaganda. Lies of Omission as well as Commision.

Steve’s show is a useless waste of of time and space.

    4. Freaking awesome piece from The Peoples View. I know how President Obama has disappointed me. He didn’t convince Rooney to sign up with Chelsea. I’m off to vote for Mitt Romney.

    5. Wonderful pictures. So much warmth leaping out to us.

    6. The Justine Sacco moment was simultaneously fury inducing and hilarious. Fury inducing in that, wow, the amount of privilege she felt to pen a racist tweet that she was traveling to Africa but wouldn’t get AIDS because she’s white – WHITE, I TELLS YA – is breathtaking. Newsflash scumbag, AIDS is not a melanin related disease.

Hilarious in the fact that Twitter found the humor in the cesspool of crap and took on her and her company and demanded a response. The #HasJustineLandedYet hashtag was brilliant! As the Head of PR for a major company like IAC, you don’t send out a racist tweet and have several vomit inducing tweets about autistic children, President Obama, other cultures, and not expect consequences.

    7. Darrell Issa? Someone needs serious mental help.

    8. The Ducky Dynasty cartoon? Perfect. You spew vile homophobic and racist comments, you deal with the consequences. I have no clue how people watch that stupid and ridiculous show. I was struck by the level of interest and clicked in to see why and after 2 minutes, I wanted to blow my brains out. It’s one of the dumbest shows on TV. It also looks like the Duck Dynasty dudes have been fooling everyone by pretending they were hillbillies and are actually conservative millionaires. Bless your heart, people who were foolish enough to fall for their schtick.

If the dumb, dumb, dummy Dems would stop their hand wringing and get 100% behind Obamacare the perception would change with the general public. How could this not be ANYTHING but good news?! 3.36 million that the rest of the insured are no longer going to have to cover for the uninsured emergency visits, etc. And the peace of mind for all 3.36 million to know they can afford health care. Amazing.

      From the Article…..http://thinkprogress.org/security/2013/12/20/3054321/inside-story-acted-prevent-rwanda/

Activists and U.S. officials alike say that the speed at which the United States has responded is unprecedented and part of it is due to a little heralded document and the bureaucratic tool it created. Presidential Study Directive 10 (PSD-10) came into being in 2011, declaring for the first time that “preventing mass atrocities and genocide is a core national security interest and a core moral responsibility of the United States.” Never before has an official document so bluntly said that the United States’ “security is affected when masses of civilians are slaughtered, refugees flow across borders, and murderers wreak havoc on regional stability and livelihoods. America’s reputation suffers, and our ability to bring about change is constrained, when we are perceived as idle in the face of mass atrocities and genocide.”

In Massachusetts it took 11 months for Romneycare enrollment reach 95% of the eligible population. In under 3 months here is how Obamacare is doing in a few states:

    Connecticut 71%
    New York 51%
    Minnesota 44%
    Vermont 41%
    california 27%
    Washington 27%
    Colorado 25%

I’ve been watching the coordinated propaganda offensive trying to convince the American people of “what a bad year 2013 has been for PBO” and I have to laugh at the how vapid and context-free the MSM/GOP’s analysis has been. The economy is improving, ACA enrollments are surging, Syria has been disarmed of its chemical weapons at no cost (in lives or treasure) to the American people, Iran is at the negotiating table and a peace accord between Israel the Palestinians is closer than it has been in years. What exactly has happened in reality to give PBO “such a bad year”? I’m actually stumped, but perhaps my mistake is looking at reality and facts. The MSM/GOP thinks PBO had a bad 2013 because the MSM/GOP says he had a bad year. It is as simple as that. All the disproven and fake “scandals” count toward this supposed terrible year. All the cherry-picked and biased poll numbers and subsequently disproven Monday morning quarterbacking of diplomatic negotiations are added to the mix. The MSM/GOP takes a snapshot in time, usually way before a battle is complete, and this snapshot defines the situation no matter what happens later. This was true with the ACA website issues (the website is now working fine, but the MSM/GOP pretends the earlier “snapshot” reflect current reality). This was true with the Syria chemical weapons. In the first “snapshot” Russia stood in the way of disarming Syria of its chemical weapons. This is how the MSM/GOP wants the American people to continue to see the situation despite the fact that Putin ended up doing EXACTLY what PBO wanted him to do, and Syria was disarmed. This is true of all the disproven fake scandals like Benghazi, IRS-gate, which no matter how thoroughly disproven, continue to linger on because the MSM/GOP only concentrates on the initial snapshot of those situations. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is propaganda, pure and simple. The MSM/GOP are fighting reality tooth and nail to convince the American people that up is down, left is right, good is evil and PBO/Dems had a terrible year while the GOP (the party that caused the gov’t shutdown and got swept in Virginia) are masters of the universe. All doubt that the MSM is the communications arm of the GOP should be erased from any thinking person’s mind at this point.

“The MSM/GOP takes a snapshot in time, usually way before a battle is complete, and this snapshot defines the situation no matter what happens later.”

You summed it up brilliantly. They do this ALL THE TIME.

To be fair, it’s the first year that some important events can be perceived by the public as errors in management by the president and his team. The roll-out of the federal website for healthcare was a real problem. The first REAL one in nearly five years. And on the biggest item of the president’s domestic agenda. Oh it has been blown out of proportion, that’s for sure. But it was the first time of his presidency that President Obama had to do a mea culpa. As for the Snowden affair, the breach of security was immense and very damaging for the USA, much more than what Wikileaks had done. Of course, in the Snowden case, the President has nothing to apologize for but the total hysteria of the media has hurt the President in terms of trust.

Those polls are manipulated of course, but we can’t deny that the President has taken a hit, at least temporarily.

What’s striking is that the media’s analysis is ALWAYS ALWAYS done with ONE thing in mind: the POLITICS. President Obama has lost a bit of his political capital, so that’s it, it’s his “worst year”.

In their minds, what’s been ACCOMPLISHED is of NO importance. The PROGRESS made is of NO importance. They’re so completely obsessed by the “politics” of Washington they can’t see beyond that. In his press conference the president calmly reminded them of what’s really important, of WHY he entered politics, of HOW he measures his success. But they were not even listening; they don’t get it. They NEVER get it.

This President is doing a magnificent job and in the end, he will be vindicated.

I have to confess though that I hope Mr. Podesta will bring some new energy and new ideas to help the President in his battle against the republican lunatics and the hostile media. Because the hostility is reaching dangerous proportions.

Four U.S. military service members were injured Saturday when gunfire hit their aircraft during a mission to evacuate Americans in South Sudan, according to the Department of Defense.

The damaged aircraft diverted to Entebbe, Uganda, where the wounded were transferred to a U.S. Air Force C-17 plane and flown to Nairobi, Kenya for medical treatment. All four service members were treated and are in stable condition, the United States Africa Command said in a statement Saturday.

Three aircraft were attacked by small-arms fire while approaching the town of Bor, the military said. All three aircraft sustained damage.

At first I had heard that one was critical, but it seems now that all are making progress. I hope.
This world peace thing seems so complicated, with so many twists and turns, so many nuances!

Oh yes……”nuance” not something we as a country have understood or handled very well. We’re used to the either/or method: Either you’re with us, or you’re part of the axis of evil; either you go to war with us, or we call your potatoes freedom fries; either you’re saying we’re wonderful and perfect, or we drop you from our list of favored nations…….
International diplomacy is ALL ABOUT nuance, something the GWB admin never understood or cared about.

Right now we are reading Dan Rather’s 2012 book “Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News” I’ve only read a few parts, but it is breathtaking. We’ve all talked about the pit that CBS news has become, he gives the reason for that. His Chapter 2 on GWB and the Texas Air National Guard begins with two paragraphs on the downfall of CBS News.

“The Bush/Guard episode confirmed the suspicion I had developed in the wake of the struggle to air our story on Abu Ghraib – That CBS News had abandoned the principles on which it was founded. It showed that I was loyal to something that no longer existed, at least not at CBS.
The person most responsible was Viacom owner Sumner Redstone, with his personal political bias and his need for Washington help to feed his insatiable lust for profit.” And much more. He says on the next page, “The legacy of what happened to our story on George Bush and his career in the Texas Air National contaminate both our politics and our journalism today……..” He says there is a long slimy filament that connects that incident clear down to the birther movement.

So far, startling reading. I heard him interviewed several weeks ago on our local PBS station authors’ program, and he spoke a little to this, but not nearly as strongly as in the book. It is so intense, I can read only a small part at a time. I highly recommend it.

‘International diplomacy is ALL ABOUT nuance’

Carolyn, I agree with you on the importance of nuance, and not just on the international level. The way I see it, we desperately need a few visible media types who can consistently handle more than you’re for me or you’re against me.

BTW, Carolyn, I absolutely love the way you shared about Dan Rather’s book! That’s exactly the way I’ve been dreaming of TOD sharing a book post once a month …maybe. People choosing ONE thing they are reading that they’d recommend AND giving just a little taste of it, with a little background. I couldn’t have asked for a more ‘perfect’ bit of modeling. 😉 I find this way so much more user friendly than when people give a list of books. Thanks.

Yeah, but it’s because we send our bravest why we have to stop ‘sending’ so often and take more time to explore alternatives. We need our bravest at home too.

Unfortunately, I have not heard yet that her company disciplined nor fired her. That is just beyond sad.

The Tweet about G. Zimmerman……I would replace his name with GUNs for every year, over 10K are killed here in US and over 31K are hurt.

Guns has Killed More Americans than AIDS. Guns are man made decease and easily curable.

It’s just what it is and as long as people watch the crap they’ll keep it flowing.

#ClickOFF US #NEWSTAINERS – I did, decades ago, and I’m much better informed as a result.
