good morning TOD ~ happy Monday 😉 big happy news at our house, tomorrow my son gets to ‘shadow’ a high school student for the day- at the H.S. he hopes to attend next year. I’ve been sick a lot lately, thus only get to spend minimal time here reading, but am doing my best to keep up with you all 🙂

Moooooorning sherijr, so sorry to hear you’ve been unwell, are you feeling any better?

good morning Chips 🙂 not so much… at Thanksgiving I went to the emergency room because I’d been having throbbing headaches daily for two weeks… after MRIs and CTs.. and a big scare about “leaking spinal fluid” :0 – turns out it was due to a previous neck injury I have, that has been exasperated due to work I’ve been doing around the house. They gave me meds for the headaches until I can see the neurosurgeon in January- and now the meds have caused me to have problems with my ear. Anyhoo, still have the headaches and a variety of other ills… caused by the MRI, I’m that person who gets the side effects from everything Chips. Will live, apparently though 🙂 🙂

lol, thanks for that amk.. funny thing- when I was at the hospital they gave me a couple of quite lovely shots for those headaches… I told them they really ought to let me have more to take home- keeping it all to themselves was completely wrong.

Morning, dotster. As terrifying as this is, I’m so glad that you posted this here and would encourage everyone to read this. I mentioned this very thing the other day when someone (maybe you?) brought up the NRA and all these bills that PROMOTE easy access to guns and I said then that the NRA is big and has money, but the REAL threat was from all these ALEC sponsored model bills in the states….and that we needed to expose and disrupt THAT and then the NRA wouldn’t be as powerful on a Federal level if they didn’t have the backup of ALEC in the states.
I believe that all of these ALEC sponsored bills are toxic and they have had such success passing state legislatures around the country because Republican (mostly) legislators are bought and paid for by ALEC to push this agenda in the states….and people that don’t pay attention to politics have a real disconnect as to whose fault this is that something doesn’t seem right in their states….and a lot of this is blamed on PBO, because he happens to the “face” of the govt., when, in fact, it is ALEC driven. When so many people don’t know about healthcare exchanges, after all this time and talk….it is not out of the question to think that this scenario I’ve stated is plausible.
These ALEC legislators…ALL OF THEM, need to be exposed!!!! (ALECExposed.org)

Dotster, they’re a traitorous group, actively undermining Democracy and the Constitution. We ought to treat them as such and any legislator who joins them.

We knew this…nice to have it validated…

HOWEVER we knowwww how to win…PBO has shown us the way….they are NOT invincible

Very interesting piece. Especially this nugget of information.

“Baseless left-wing attacks on Republicans differ in character from baseless right-wing attacks on Democrats in two ways. First, most liberal-left attacks on Republicans are more political than cultural, while virtually all right-wing attacks on Democrats are about culture.”

“This reflects the way most people on the left see the world—through a political lens primarily, and through a cultural one only secondarily. There are exceptions to this, but in the main, for the broad liberal-left, politics is primarily about politics, not culture.”

I think that advice is good. I notice PBO never sends Jay or anyone out to defend or explain these stupid memes. He knows that the more credence he would give to them, the more powerful a life they would have. Jay has to answer stupid questions from the WHPC who get stuck on asinine ideas, but he also gives them just about the attention they deserve.

I guess this stupid ass Jonathan karl didn’t know that we are still trying to recover from the worse financial crisis since the great depression, and we have not fully recover thanks to Karl’s buddies over there on the other side. The ones who don’t give a dam about that 47%. So if poverty have gotten worse, Karl need to talk to his GOP buddies on Capitol Hill.

Folks it’s part of framing for 2014 to make POTUS and Dems own all bad news. Notice how he ignored the 2008 Financial meltdown. Notice how he totally ignored any Obstructions from the TBGOPers. Another reason DNC need a better communication team to start now and truly counter the narrative the MSM would help the TBGOPers push in 2014.

Morning all. Off the see MIL today for some pre-Christmas cheer. Living in the state of PA, I have focused on two goals–getting rid of our incompetent governor in 2014 and shedding our horrific tea party senator, Pat Toomey, in 2016. My great dream has been that our AG, Kathleen Kane, the best vote getter in the state, would take Toomey on. Well, yesterday, at a grand meeting of PA politicos in NEW YORK, Kane said she would consider taking on that challenge. I shouted, fist up, at the news. Please God let this terrific woman run and win and let me see the day when I can call her Senator. Party will be at my place when that happens.

In all of 2012, health insurers spent $216 million advertising on local television stations. But that’s nothing compared to what they’re about to spend. According to trade association TVB, insurers will spend more than $500 million on local television ads in 2014. And that’s to say nothing of cable television ads and social media campaigns.
Insurers look at these next few years as a gold rush. Tens of millions of people will be buying private insurance of the exchanges. It’s a swarm of customers like nothing they’ve ever seen. And they plan to capture them — even if they need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to do so.
The Wall Street Journal reports that WellPoint has been holding off “on a planned campaign as problems with the website made it impossible for many consumers to sign up.” But now that HealthCare.Gov is more or less working the insurance giant plans to spend $100 million by the end of the year.
These ads aren’t just a boon to local television stations. They’re a boon to the new health law which’ll be promoted in a sustained ad campaign that rivals the presidential election in size and scale. The ads won’t be specifically about Obamacare, of course — they’re about brand building for WellPoint and Cigna and others insurers — but many of the ads will tell consumers where they can go to buy this wonderful product they’ve just heard such glowing things about. Many of the ads will capture the eye of someone who knows they need to buy insurance before tax time but hasn’t quite gotten around to doing it. And then it will direct them to their local exchange, or at least to their insurer’s Web site.
The fact that the insurers are launching their campaigns is also independent confirmation that HealthCare.Gov is rapidly improving. major insurers are virtually the only group aside from the federal government that has real visibility into the functioning of Obamacare’s digital architecture.

Via a thread on BJ – seems the new pope is upsetting the “traditionalists” – the latter having much in common with the GOP.

“Francis has made clear his disdain for traditionalist Catholics, saying they are self-absorbed retrogrades who aren’t helping the church’s mission to evangelize.”

Never thought I’d have much in common with the Pope – but nothing in this world surprised me very much any more.

Re. the Tomasky piece linked above, he made a point that I often think about——that in defending PBO from some of these outrageous charges—-the selfie etc.—-when everyone on twitter is off to the races——it adds “fuel to the fire”——-and may give way more attention to these ridiculous accusations than they deserve, making the nonsense more widespread. Wonder if it would be better to just let the sillier of these just drop off the face of the earth, with no attention, which seemed to be the objective. What y’all think?

    • 53 desertflower
      December 16, 2013 at 8:53 am

Correct. People give these ridiculous things legitimacy when they do that. They should be ignored. It’s all they’re worthy of. But NOT ignoring them, we fuel the fire…and play directly into their hands. They should be laughed at and ignored.

I respectfully disagree with Tomasky. The “ignore-and-it-will-go-away” approach does not work in this climate. These charges aren’t simply made by some irrelevant loons – many of the so-called main stream “journalists” have been engaging in spreading lies and unsubstantiated claims about PBO. A very significant part of PBO’s rabid and deranged opposition comes from the “left” and “central” media, not just the right, as Tomasky is trying to suggest. And that’s what makes it especially important to push back because in PBO’s case, the left/central media often picks up on the right’s talking points, tries to legitimize it and runs away with it. Look at how MSNBC was quick to fire Bashir but have coddled Joe Scarborough for saying far more outrageous things about PBO.

When Mark Knoller posts endlessly about the number of hrs that PBO has been out playing golf, or the number of miles that PBO has flown to get to and from Hawaii – if you think that’s not a nod to the most rabid RW base, think again. These are “culture” attacks, not political ones. When all the networks circulate pics of PBO’s selfie with Michelle appearing to be stern, but refuse to show pics in the same context when she is smiling – these are “culture” attacks, not political. When Jodi Kantor tries to suggest that PBO’s family life is staged, it’s a “culture” attack, not a political one. So while I applaud Tomasky for engaging in the conversation about the differences in PBO’s vs. GWB’s opposition, I think he has a ways to go before he fully gets it.
