Dudette, I felt that also. First, I thought Kirk’s selection of the song had a message that had a calmness for the crowd which was a good lead into President’s message. Mrs. Mandela was a little more relax after the song and truly after President’s speech. I could see her disposition change with a joyfulness and appreciation of the song and President Obama.
Our National Security Advisor is there and speaking with the tall man with the cowboy hat on. Not making fun of him, but I saw him get out of his car on arrival and he had an attitude that was full of himself. HZ

Sure is, Dudette. He knows how to get the people involved and that was one thing, IMO that they needed. They needed to be brought into the celebration as a collective body. Music can speak to the peoples minds, hearts, and disciplines. Then President Obama gave them something to really think about and not to forget why they were there and for whom. It came together for them for those moments.HZ

I’m surprising chipper so far, VC – I’m expecting a crash around 3pm… So far, so good! I’m really glad I stayed up to watch the proceedings. I was so wired when I finally went to bed that I couldn’t sleep for an hour!
I am glad I slept a couple of hours BEFORE because I am hanging in now only because the place is too ‘bright’. And yes, I’m glad I watched it ‘live’.
After it ended I was thinking they might have had less ‘disruptions’ if they had added more music in between, giving the people a chance to participate more. I imagine I’d have been frustrated too if I had attended physically to pay my respects and celebrate a life well-lived, if I mostly was expected to sit and listen to people saying over and over what I already knew. IMO people needed to EXPRESS themselves, not listen for so long to others who were not as closely involved expressing THEMSELVES. Half and half, you know?
We were saying the same thing here. If there had been more music, I think a lot of the energy might have been better utilized, and it would have been more interactive. Some of those speeches were a bit dry and relayed a history that I’m sure every South African learns in the crib. Regardless, I’m glad they had the public memorial.

I was not distracted so much by the audio or visuals, which seemed to be in consonant with his words; people listened and were responding to what he was saying – PBO’s speech was THAT riveting.

He is so inspiring, so perfectly on key.. and always always unafraid to challenge we the people- around the globe- to be better, to step up. This is what makes him a leader among leaders, a man of the people always- he does not fear us- he respects and nurtures and trusts us to be better.. never sees us as the enemy but as his partners. A great man, speaking eloquently and lovingly of another great man’s life- a life he challenges all of us to aspire to. I love this man, this President.

President Obama, as usual, was able to go beyond the usual platitudes.
I’m still speechless by what he delivered today. I will watch this again today, for sure.
Oh, dudette, thank you for the reference to the text. I fell asleep and missed everything, but even reading the text, I was moved to tears. I hope there’s a clip later today of the whole speech, so I can see and hear it in context. Everyone in the stadium and everyone watching was privileged to hear this great man eulogize another great man. What a time we live in!!!
Such a different environment and lifestyle – little sight of security – although no doubt it was there – the people dancing and singing – quite disrupting the formal proceedings – despite all attempts to stop them – and an amazing collection of people and speakers.
The loudest applause – prior to President Obama’s appearance was for Robert Mugabe!! – a man with such different ideals and ways of achieving same to Nelson Mandela that one could ever meet – yet despite what has and is happening to his people – he received a loud and supportive welcome. We sometimes see things very differently to those who are in the midst of it all – this is an intriguing reminder as to our world full of very diverse groups of people.

WOW! What a speech! I am in tears…..I was jumping and clapping so loud I could not sit still. President Barack Obama touched and included everybody and every country. He did not hold back. Damn, did he not take it there! I know President Nelson Mandela is smiling and very pleased of his native son. This is the best speech, ever. I. Know we keep saying this every time our President speaks, but my, my, my……..
