Dudette, I felt that also. First, I thought Kirk’s selection of the song had a message that had a calmness for the crowd which was a good lead into President’s message. Mrs. Mandela was a little more relax after the song and truly after President’s speech. I could see her disposition change with a joyfulness and appreciation of the song and President Obama.
Our National Security Advisor is there and speaking with the tall man with the cowboy hat on. Not making fun of him, but I saw him get out of his car on arrival and he had an attitude that was full of himself. HZ
Sure is, Dudette. He knows how to get the people involved and that was one thing, IMO that they needed. They needed to be brought into the celebration as a collective body. Music can speak to the peoples minds, hearts, and disciplines. Then President Obama gave them something to really think about and not to forget why they were there and for whom. It came together for them for those moments.HZ
I’m trying to remain respectful for the occasion, but I couldn’t help a tiny smirk at the crowd’s reaction to PBO while Hillary & BIll, Bush, etc all have to sit there and listen to it. OK, I’m better now!
I was watching on our public broadcasting – when showing the Presidents – Hillary and Pres Carter seemed to be watching and listening – Bill & the Bushes were more interested in chatting up those around them – so not a lot new in the world of important people
You are witnessing the depth of the weakness of their character, the hollowness of their spirit, and the torture that those who envy endure, every minute of their miserable lives.
POB is a most beautiful gift from the Almighty spirit of pure humility and gracious goodness that makes his brilliance shine a light to all who will hear his voice. He is on fire. I love our president and I count this an honor to hear him tonight. President Mandela is smiling all around POB today. HZ
Just extended my recording to 10:30 am Cspan2. I have to go to work, and need to be able to watch uninterrupted. But thanks to you guys, I’m already getting the joyousness of a funeral for a life well lived.
Had CNN on at that moment. They mentioned it, but in fairness said that the president was going down the line of people greeting them. It wasn’t the time to be political and skip over Castro. Of course, Dubya would have, and therefore create a stir.
But PBO would not ever take away from the focus of their purpose for being there. It was not the time.
Well, it’s likely that they have no school today because of the snow/ice storm in the DC area today. Federal government offices are closed (with option for telework) and many public and private schools are schools today. 🙂 🙂
I’m calling it a night, too (or morning, as is actually the case). Will record the rest on CSPAN and watch tomorrow. Great sharing with everyone. President Obama is remarkable.
I’m surprising chipper so far, VC – I’m expecting a crash around 3pm… So far, so good! I’m really glad I stayed up to watch the proceedings. I was so wired when I finally went to bed that I couldn’t sleep for an hour!
I am glad I slept a couple of hours BEFORE because I am hanging in now only because the place is too ‘bright’. And yes, I’m glad I watched it ‘live’.
After it ended I was thinking they might have had less ‘disruptions’ if they had added more music in between, giving the people a chance to participate more. I imagine I’d have been frustrated too if I had attended physically to pay my respects and celebrate a life well-lived, if I mostly was expected to sit and listen to people saying over and over what I already knew. IMO people needed to EXPRESS themselves, not listen for so long to others who were not as closely involved expressing THEMSELVES. Half and half, you know?
We were saying the same thing here. If there had been more music, I think a lot of the energy might have been better utilized, and it would have been more interactive. Some of those speeches were a bit dry and relayed a history that I’m sure every South African learns in the crib. Regardless, I’m glad they had the public memorial.
Your presence has graced this space for goodness to all of us during this historical moment for such a great human being. Have a wonderful day, Bobfr.HZ
I was not distracted so much by the audio or visuals, which seemed to be in consonant with his words; people listened and were responding to what he was saying – PBO’s speech was THAT riveting.
He is so inspiring, so perfectly on key.. and always always unafraid to challenge we the people- around the globe- to be better, to step up. This is what makes him a leader among leaders, a man of the people always- he does not fear us- he respects and nurtures and trusts us to be better.. never sees us as the enemy but as his partners. A great man, speaking eloquently and lovingly of another great man’s life- a life he challenges all of us to aspire to. I love this man, this President.
“There are too many of us who happily embrace Madiba’s legacy of racial reconciliation, but passionately resist even modest reforms”
In the spirit of Nelson Mandela who was not afraid to call out hypocrisy, our President did the same in those words. (I for one am glad he went there.)
The President can speak so eloquently about Nelson Mandela and the lessons from his life because he is actively applying those lessons to his life.
OMG, that was a magnificent speech, one for the ages!! PBO opened his soul to share his ideas and thoughts and feelings about this great man. WOW WOW WOW. One of this best!!
Indeed meta. There were times when I could actually hear the crowd responding directly to him, line by line, word by word, similar to a campaign rally-style. When this man speaks, the world listens.
There was a photo of a notepad of paper with a handwritten speech the other day that Pete Sousa took showing PBO insisted on writing his own speech. Wonder if that was this speech?
Who is bringing me the chicken soup? Oh, did I tell you all I wasn’t feeling on top form? The phone just rang – for work! I really don’t think, feeling the way I do, that it would be wise to go in today. I wouldn’t be able to perform at my best. Most of you here who understand what it’s like to want to give your best to your job will understand, I’m sure.
DAMN….PBO’s speech seemed to have worked that crowed up and simultaneously calmed that crowd right on down…they got all fired up, and are now filled with inspiration, peace, etc….
Yeh, when that program came out. I thought they should have put PBO right before President Zuma. The people after him are falling flat. The fact that audience has to wait for translation makes it hard a bit too.
“A great man, speaking eloquently and lovingly of another great man’s life-a life he challenges all of us to aspire to. I love this man, this President.”

No offense to other world leaders… but is President Obama the only one who can DELIVER a speech ??
Maybe it’s because he’s the only one who has WRITTEN his ! (I’m SURE of it; he writes the most important ones, when he wants to express his heart and his soul )
President Obama, as usual, was able to go beyond the usual platitudes.
I’m still speechless by what he delivered today. I will watch this again today, for sure.
Oh, dudette, thank you for the reference to the text. I fell asleep and missed everything, but even reading the text, I was moved to tears. I hope there’s a clip later today of the whole speech, so I can see and hear it in context. Everyone in the stadium and everyone watching was privileged to hear this great man eulogize another great man. What a time we live in!!!
Such a different environment and lifestyle – little sight of security – although no doubt it was there – the people dancing and singing – quite disrupting the formal proceedings – despite all attempts to stop them – and an amazing collection of people and speakers.
The loudest applause – prior to President Obama’s appearance was for Robert Mugabe!! – a man with such different ideals and ways of achieving same to Nelson Mandela that one could ever meet – yet despite what has and is happening to his people – he received a loud and supportive welcome. We sometimes see things very differently to those who are in the midst of it all – this is an intriguing reminder as to our world full of very diverse groups of people.
WOW! What a speech! I am in tears…..I was jumping and clapping so loud I could not sit still. President Barack Obama touched and included everybody and every country. He did not hold back. Damn, did he not take it there! I know President Nelson Mandela is smiling and very pleased of his native son. This is the best speech, ever. I. Know we keep saying this every time our President speaks, but my, my, my……..
He took it there. FLOTUS looked so relaxed and gorgeous. How is it they can look beautiful in the rain?
Amandla!
Speedy, even with sleep in your eyes! 😆
I’m all perked up for My President! 😀
He has that effect – ALWAYS! 😀
I notice that the tone of those behind him seems a bit calmer.
Kirk Franklin!!!!

There he is!!!!
He looks so good… Even at this time of the morning…
He’s out on the field!!!!!
Heheh! That’s Kirk!
Sure is, Dudette. He knows how to get the people involved and that was one thing, IMO that they needed. They needed to be brought into the celebration as a collective body. great observation!
Thanks UT for so diligently maintaining the blog posts while Chips gets some rest. 🙂

PBO!!!!!
The place goes wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the crowd goes WILD!!!!
The crowd goes wild!!!!
The crowd goes wild for our PBO
yes it does!
Obama!
I’m trying to remain respectful for the occasion, but I couldn’t help a tiny smirk at the crowd’s reaction to PBO while Hillary & BIll, Bush, etc all have to sit there and listen to it. OK, I’m better now!

GWB’s body language isn’t good. He looks angry~crossed arms and sour expression.
I was watching on our public broadcasting – when showing the Presidents – Hillary and Pres Carter seemed to be watching and listening – Bill & the Bushes were more interested in chatting up those around them – so not a lot new in the world of important people
Don’t feel bad, you’re not the only one.
not alone!
POTUS is speaking.
Of course our POTUS did a wonderful job. So proud I voted for that man three times. I mean twice.
You probably did vote for PBO three times. I did. You need to count two general elections and one all important primary in 2008.
The crowd erupts….US media: Please take note….
They won’t. We will. And, we will make the truth known to all, hf!
Indeed we will, Bob. 🙂
Someone send Tweety a telegram . Yes, telegram.HZ
🙂
Look at the expressions on the faces of Dubya and Bubba! What is that about?
jealousy
Jealousy!
You are witnessing the depth of the weakness of their character, the hollowness of their spirit, and the torture that those who envy endure, every minute of their miserable lives.
Bobfr, your words are again so profound. Thank you!!!!HZ

Ubuntu! (human kindness)
Reconcilation is not ignoring a cruel past, but a means of confronting it in truth…
Pres. Obama is giving an excellent commemoration. This is truly touching. His words are profound.
exceptional!!!! PBO goes to the heart of the matter – beautiful commemoration by PBO of Pres. Mandela!!!!
Preach, PBO, Preach!
Echos of PBO’s 2004 speech.
PBO is going there!
Oh my goodness….
That’s MY President!!!
Oh My!!! What a speech.
I agree Claire. I’m so enjoying listening to him.
Just saw something on Twitter from ABC that, while greeting heads of state, PBO shook the hand of Cuban President Raul Castro. Interesting.
Castrogate !!!!!
3…2….1
Chris Cuomo freaked out. over the handshake
For sure.
Had CNN on at that moment. They mentioned it, but in fairness said that the president was going down the line of people greeting them. It wasn’t the time to be political and skip over Castro. Of course, Dubya would have, and therefore create a stir.

Wonder where the group from Iran is. I read Rouhani was coming.
Now he brings the hammer … inequality … lots of words but zip action … and he is building to a crescendo …
And my tears are flowing.HZ
I’m playing hookie from work and happy to be able to see this wonderful ceremony.
Welcome!
Thanks, theo!
exactly my thought these last few days.
Regret the typo – ‘Rossa’ obviously should be ‘Rosa’ – that’s what happens when one hasn’t slept for > 24h 🙂
An odd thought – I wonder if Malia is up watching this moment in history as it unfolds?
Would not surprise me in the least if both she and Sasha are watching, VC!!
bbl …
Probably required. 🙂
Well, it’s likely that they have no school today because of the snow/ice storm in the DC area today. Federal government offices are closed (with option for telework) and many public and private schools are schools today. 🙂 🙂
AHH, quoting Invictus.
Standing O for PBO!!
Need to be back at the ‘day job’ in a couple of hours. What a special time to have shared with all of you, dear TOD community.
I’m calling it a night, too (or morning, as is actually the case). Will record the rest on CSPAN and watch tomorrow. Great sharing with everyone. President Obama is remarkable.
May your day pass quickly, Theo, so that you’ll be able to catch up on your rest later today.

Yes, my alarm clock just went on at its normal time 🙂 so I better get up and at it! Thanks for a great gathering, TOD!
Your presence has graced this space for goodness to all of us during this historical moment for such a great human being. Have a wonderful day, Bobfr.HZ
With PBO’s word resounding in your head, I know you will have a great day, Bfr!
Thank you friends!!!
I see Peter Gabriel sitting among The Elders.
I also U.S Ambassador to South Africa, Patrick Gaspard sitting with FLOTUS.
Indeed, love Amb. Patrick Gaspard. HZ
Well, I catch the rest in a summary; off to take a nap
Bubba is working the crowd, I see. He needs to sit down; it is not about him.
Did he just announce that Bibi is there?
The audio and visuals were tough and distracting, but PBO soars with the rhetoric. I will need to listen again.
I was not distracted so much by the audio or visuals, which seemed to be in consonant with his words; people listened and were responding to what he was saying – PBO’s speech was THAT riveting.
PBO giving Graca Michel a kiss on each cheek and warm hug.
What an extraordinary Speech….tears was just running down my face….PBO was magnificent in his remarks saying what had to be said
I know it’s early here, but did I just hear the announcer say that Bibi Netanyahu is there? Wasn’t he saying it was too expensive to go?
It’s been a very long day. Good night every one. Thank you utaustinliberal for the live blogs of this historical event.
Rest well, Pam!

Wouldn’t surprise me if whoever put Dilma after PBO is having major second thoughts.
I was thinking the same VC.
