So very nice to see the Kerrys with the Obamas, out relaxing together on a chilly evening in December, taking a break from “saving the world from itself.”

I swear the guy in the balcony above FLOTUS, applauding and grinning, could be my cousin Thomas! He spends a lot of time at the Kennedy Center. I will ask him!

Chips, when will you relent in your Billy Joel jihad?

    In the meantime, tonight’s menu:

Blackened tilapia, poached in white wine
Sauteed mexican squash and onions, with garlic salt, cayenne pepper, and cumin

And a delightful white table wine.

From the way Carolyn Ryan announced it, it sounds rather non-gate worthy. I cannot imagine what she means my “great story”. She’s the political editor so I’m assuming it has something to do with politics. Hmmmm….

I saw that – not convinced it is the report referenced – not really bothered either way – a political reporter trying to get people interested in a political report – when they all stop carrying water for the GOP might go back to reading.

The person who posted the “unedited” story seems to be an emoprog. I’m not even so sure what’s particularly groundbreaking about it.

          December 8, 2013 at 11:48 pm

I’m not even sure what the big deal about this story is. Homeless children living in shelters in NYC are nothing new. So they claim to have been following the child since 2102. Okay?…. And….? I may be missing something here…

Good points, as usual. Some of these people seem to have lived in caves and just pop up with stuff, every now and then, like they thought of it first. Unreal.

            • 67 hopefruit2
              December 9, 2013 at 12:32 am

Indeed. So they just realized that 22K children in NYC are homeless. Just a couple months ago, we were discussing an article on TOD in which NYC Mayor Bloomberg said that the housing shortage is a good thing, and that homeless NYers were not in a hurry to move out of the shelters because the “spaces were nice.”

So how exactly is this NYT story “groundbreaking?”

Here in Salem, Oregon we’ve had a brutal arctic freeze, uncharacteristic of moderate winters in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Today I heard the pipes in my church froze and flooded the basement causing an emergency clean up operation. I wasn’t there, but I did volunteer to work a soup kitchen at a Lutheran Church where the congregations of the city take turns on Sunday afternoons providing a soup and sandwich luncheon with personal hygiene supplies for the homeless and destitute. I took the opportunity to produce and make available a flyer to all the guests that invites them to sign up for coverage under the Oregon Health Plan, our state’s version of expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. It provides instructions for who to contact to set up an appt. to enroll including one agency that has contracted with Cover Oregon to do outreach and send volunteers to shelters and public places to enroll people. There were flyers at each table and I took a break from my dishwashing duties to check and make sure people were reading them and taking them home. Some had already enrolled, and others were grateful to find out they could enroll. So it was a good way to do the kind of outreach I am trying to do to those persons who have the most need, who have gone without basic medical care for too much of their life. They had a warm meal, today and the promise of health care coverage, but I hoped they had some other shelter to stay in when they left the dining hall to go out in this bitter cold. As I left for my home where a cozy gas fireplace waited for me there was a poor soul all bundled up with sleeping bag and covers sleeping on the cold concrete church steps in temps of the low twenties.

One last word from me on the beautiful dress…….I’ve named the color FLOTUS green. It is her color, an original, certainly not a paint color from a chart…..it is just elegant.
As to the dress and the drapes around her arms……I like them. They change the dress from just another strapless gown to something unique, original…..and certainly got our attention. Also, notice all the beautiful tuck work on the dress.
Whenever I see someone in a strapless dress, I think about Kitty Carlyle…….I’m that old! who used to be on What’s My Line. She dressed elegantly, and this was in the fifties when strapless dresses were also popular. Someone asked her one time why she never wore a strapless dress…..she said that sitting behind that panel table, if she wore a strapless dress, she would look like she was sitting in a bathtub…..I think of that all the time……..
Whatever FLOTUS wears at an occasion like this, every other woman looks remarkably dowdy and somewhat passΓ©.
Does anyone know the designer yet?
Well…..time for bed. Exams this coming week, must write one tomorrow.

Back in 1988, our Navy organization agreed to invite her to speak at a Federal Women’s Program event … I was in charge of making the program and visit arrangements. Just after she and her staff agreed and started to work with me on the planning, I believe she broke her hip or was otherwise incapacitated, and had to cancel out her speech schedule going forward. I thought the engineers and scientists at the Navy organization were going to weep! Would have been such an honor to hear her.
