On December 9, a law banning firearms that can go unnoticed by a metal detector is set to expire. Since 1988, the Undetectable Firearms Act has banned undetectable guns, which can be made from plastic through 3D printers.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) have introduced legislation that expands the undetectable firearms law to ban 3D-printed guns, require guns to be recognizable as guns, and them to contain significant metal. “The expiration of this law, combined with advances in 3D printing, make what was once a hypothetical threat into a terrifying reality,” Schumer said, according to the Associated Press. Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) introduced his own version in the House to renew the law.

Still, the urgency of the issue does not mean Congress will take up the bills in its remaining days.
Even the soon-to-expire law contains a major loophole that permits plastic guns as long as they have a small metal piece that could be easily removed. One widespread model, the Liberator, uses a nail so small that it would not be picked up by metal detectors.

“The American people do not want to see a kangaroo court here,” Rep. Jim Cooper, a Tennessee Democrat, said midway through Wednesday’s four-hour prosecution of Obama administration technology experts by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) hopped to attention. “ ‘Kangaroo court’ is quite an accusation,” he said, “and I hope the gentleman from Tennessee, when he uses the term kangaroo court in the future, will think better of making an accusation.”

Sorry, Mr. Chairman, but the pouch fits. It was indeed a kangaroo court, and Issa was the main marsupial. No human makes leaps quite like Darrell Issa. He leaps to conclusions. He makes huge leaps of logic. He leaps before he looks. And he invariably leaps right into the White House, alleging high-level political misbehavior and administration corruption for just about everything that goes wrong.

On Wednesday, the topic was Obamacare, but the California Republican followed the script he used when investigating “Fast and Furious” gun-running, the Benghazi attack, and IRS targeting: make inflammatory allegations of high-level skullduggery, release selective information that appears to support the case while withholding exculpatory details, then use his chairman’s privileges to turn hearings into episodes of “The Darrell Issa Show.”

Tony had just finished reading a new book entitled, ‘You Can Be The Man of Your House.’

He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced, ‘From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is Law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m finished eating my meal, you will serve me a sumptuous dessert.

After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and we will have the kind of sex that I want. Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You will wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe.

Then, you will massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?’

His Sicilian wife Gina replied, “The funeral director would be my first guess.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) expressed his frustration with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) over immigration reform on Wednesday, calling Boehner’s rhetoric on the issue an “intellectual yoga drill.” “They’re doing nothing over there,” Reid said of House Republicans, in an interview with Fusion TV. “Zero. And to do this intellectual yoga drill where nobody knows what he’s talking about, is like some of the yoga moves I tried and I can’t do.”

“If they pass something we could at least go to conference, we could do something there. Because in a conference, the American people are watching what we do. The way it is now, he does nothing so there’s nothing to watch,” he continued.

Reid was reacting to Boehner’s comments Wednesday that House Republicans have “no intention of ever going to conference on the Senate bill.”

Realistically, this is the ONLY way to avoid catastrophe after catastrophe until we take control of the House in 2015 and, in fact, is likely the best guarantee that we will take control in 2015.

Ezra Klein Alert – Lawrence O’Donnell just teased Ezra Klein is coming up to talk about the proposed bills to tinker with the ACA. I couldn’t get to the remote fast enough. Deliver me from spineless Democrats and unhinged and deranged Republicans. I rather watch Criminal Minds.

I’ve seen quite a few posts on Comet ISON here, but haven’t figured out when it’s supposed to be visible.

I’ve seen the date Nov 28; since it’s boomeranging itself around the sun, I’m assuming that it will be visible either pre-dawn or post-sunset. Does anyone here know?

In the late 1990s (1997?) there was a comet that was visible for weeks just after sunset, and I think about this time of year. It kind of hovered over the horizon with its tail upright. Was an interesting sight, but you kind of got used to seeing it, since it lingered for so long.

Wonder what this comet will be like.

Most comprehensive state of play regarding the Iranian nuclear talks:

The P5+1 talks with Iran in Geneva late last week produced a lot of drama – foreign ministers unexpectedly clearing their schedules and flying in, reports of disunity among the P5+1 partners, post-midnight negotiating sessions, media speculation about a breakdown, and finger-pointing about whom to blame. One might have thought the negotiations on the Iran nuclear issue had hit a brick wall and were at the point of collapse.

The reality is more tame. Although expectations had been raised for an announcement of a deal before the end of the week, the difficulties of managing a highly complex negotiation involving several independent and strong-willed countries in a compressed period of time became apparent. So, while making very impressive progress in just a few days, the talks could not quite come to closure. There will be another opportunity to do so in a week’s time…..

Great blog on the President’s ACA fix speech today. I have not read this man before.

“Watch the announcement/press conference and you will see how an integral leader responds to a serious, possibly existential crisis. I have never witnessed anything like this in public political life. I’ve seen officials apologize publicly before; I have never seen a major leader enter what I’ll call the “zone of apology” (that mental and conversational space where apology is present, looked at, reviewed, analyzed and engaged) and remain there so gracefully and with such powerful presence.”

    There’s more: https://www.google.com/search?q=integral+leader&oq=integral+leader&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.3792j0j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8#es_sm=122&espv=210&q=integral+leader+barack+obama
