I swear I am done with US politics come January 2017. I am so tired of the disrespect of this President by the media, republicans, and some democrats in Congress. This country truly does not deserve him. I cannot even imagine what Michelle must be thinking having to witness the constant degradation of her husband by people that are not even fit enough to shine his shoes.

I appreciate your sentiment, but none of us can abandon politics, because basic justice for human beings requires us to participate. My father, life-long Republican, got out of his death bed to change his party registration to Democrat. We are all needed to stand with the humanity and human need against the forces of cruelty and injustice.

Well said, Bill R. No matter how difficult to watch all this, and it surely is, it’s not as difficult as what your father went through, just to participate. I vote Democratic for my dear coal-miner grandfather, a union man. And for my mother who was born only one year after women got the damn vote, which still amazes me.

That presser ticked me off. Tired of him taking the heat for everything. Tired of him being forced to apologize for trying to do something good for this country. Bush and Cheney out there chillin’. Never being forced to apologize for the lives they cost. GOP been telling lies about ACA since day one but it’s POTUS that has to apologize. FUCK that.

Thank you, UT, for this magnificent summary. PBO is truly casting pearls before swine. NO president in modern times has ever spoken with this level of humility, determination, courage and absolute sense of responsibility. The media who attack him look small in comparison to this true statesman. They are used to “politicians” who whine, cast blame and lie. When this president speaks, we know we are in the presence of greatness.

      • November 14, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Jackie, I feel exactly how you do. I am very proud of PBO for explaining what happened plus why we need the change and not doing the normal firing someone to deflect the blame onto someone else, but saying he is to blame. He also explained how he will keep working to get it right for us.

The horrors of combat resulted in symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that Bottachiari said affected his temper, made it tough to sleep and only intensified, especially in crowded situations.

“You can spin it in your head, ‘This is a good thing. I’m a heightened warrior.’ You know, it’s good that I’m checking every single person’s pocket that I go by and looking at everyone and scanning for weapons, eyes.”

Bottachiari said his PTSD symptoms included a constant state of stress, trauma and tension.

I was having a tough time even leaving the house without a firearm. Couldn’t do it. Couldn’t leave the house without a gun,” he said.

He knew he needed help, so Bottachiari reached out to Soldier’s Best Friend, an Arizona group of veterans, experts and volunteers who train and pair service dogs with veterans.

Bottachiari was matched with Tigger, a nearly 2-year-old Labrador mix, this past summer.

“They steered me toward a strong breed that would make me feel confident and secure,” he said.

They have been training together for those situations when Bottachiari’s PTSD symptoms start surfacing.

“He pulls my focus onto him when we’re in a crowd … I’m thinking about him and I’m looking at him and I know if anything bad did happen, he’s there for me,” he said.

With Tigger’s presence, Bottachiari said he was finally able to sell his guns. It’s the first time in 10 years, he says, he hasn’t owned one.

“I can realize that’s not my place anymore,” he said. “There are police officers. I don’t have to do that to myself anymore. I can just enjoy my life and he [Tigger] reminds me of that.”

It really is up to us to make sure that our friends, neighbors, family who are uninsured or under-insured know how to contact your state marketplace and compare their options on the exchange. The media is not going to help with this while they see an opportunity to even the “score” with Republicans by pounding on President Obama for problems the first month caused by website failures and private insurance cancellations that were beyond his control.

If I’m hearing President Obama correctly, the insurance companies can continue to sell “junk” policies as long as they explain to the buyer just how shitty the policies are?

    • 51 utaustinliberal
      November 14, 2013 at 1:26 pm

They can only extend those plans into 2014 and also inform them that their plans are junk and list ObamaCare’s benefits and direct them to the marketplace.

So in actuality President Obama made the insurance companies show a comparison of their plans with and without the ACA provisions?

It’s no wonder the insurance companies are mad.

I know all of us get rightly offended and outraged at the disrespectful treatment our President receives from the media hacks. And we know this would not be happening if he were not African American. Our President is one of those rare persons we are graced to know in our time and in history who has the capacity to transcend ego in a non-reactive way and simply apply himself to the compassionate work of facing the task before him and do the best he can do to make the plight of humanity better, and to lift up our world view to see the bigger picture, that we are all one, we are in this together, to serve the evolution of humankind and a growing compassion for one another and all Creation. We can learn from his exquisite example as a leader to keep our eyes on the prize, and not give our energies to being reactive to the egoic and insane manipulations of those who devote themselves to harm and regression. The truth is, we are not going back. We are going forward and that is not going to stop, thanks to our President and to the support he receives from persons like us.

Thank you, Gabby and Mark! Veterans for Responsible Solutions…. (to gun violence)

Yet another thing I was dealing with yesterday was the knowledge that a young girl that had gone to the elementary school I work in, was shot by her mentally ill father. She was an honor’s student and loved by many. The dad was so abusive, that he was forbidden to go near her middle school and the mother feared for her life and had a restraining order against him. She’s filed for divorce in Oct. siting domestic violence….and feared for herself and her daughter. Yesterday, she went to the house to gather some belongings and he was there…waiting. He shot his brother-in-law (twice…in case he wasn’t dead enough the first time) went into the house and shot his wife and daughter and dragged his dead wife’s body outside and set her on fire. The police had been called to their house before because he was suicidal. Yet THIS man had a gun. WHAT THE FUCKING HELL!!
School was in mourning yesterday….and will be for some time. Why on earth do we make this possible?

One of the students in my Composition class is Filipino. She has lived here most of her life, but her mother has family in the Philippines. She said they have not heard from their family members, so are living in suspense. Her name is Zippa (I love it!) and she is always cheerful and upbeat, but today she was down, so we prayed for her and her family before class started. (I teach at a church college) I’ll keep you posted. She is a sweetheart.
