    CBS caught lying again!!

….To consume Attkisson’s story is to freak out about HealthCare.gov. The scoop here is that Henry Chao, Healthcare.gov’s chief project manager at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), somehow didn’t know about a Sept. 3 memo warning of issues on that troubled government Web site. The transcript to which Attkisson gained access spells out some serious alleged difficulties with the site. From the televised report: “In excerpts we’ve obtained, Chao was asked about a memo that outlined important security risks discovered in the insurance system. Chao said he was unaware of this Sept. 3 government memo written by another senior official at CMS. It found two high-risk issues which are redacted for security reasons. The memo said, ‘The threat and risk potential to the system is limitless.’ The memo shows CMS gave deadlines of mid-2014 and early 2015 to address them.”
Via Attkisson’s treatment, Chao comes off looking clueless about a critical aspect of HealthCare.gov. In her narrative, a Republican lawyer questioning Chao asked him if he found it “surprising” that he’d never seen that memo before. Chao replied, “‘Yeah . . . I mean, wouldn’t you be surprised if you were me?’ He later added: ‘It is disturbing. I mean, I don’t deny that this is . . . a fairly nonstandard way’ to proceed.”

“So when CBS Evening News ran its report based on a leak, presumably from the [Republican] staff, but we don’t know — of a partial transcript — excerpts from a partial transcript — they said the security issues raised in the document, and I quote, ‘could lead to identity theft among buying insurance,’ that cannot be true based on what we established in our back and forth. Is that correct?”

Chao replied: “That’s correct. I think there was some rearrangement of the words I used during the testimony and how it was portrayed.”
The Erik Wemple Blog raised similar questions to CBS News yesterday. It declined to comment……

Your coverage doesn’t actually kick in until the beginning of 2014, yes?

Are we really shocked that even people who have applied aren’t rushing to send in their first payments, before their coverage would actually start?

Check to see when you have to start paying in order for your plan to be in effect by January 1st, 2014. Then watch *that* date.

Now imagine how many would have signed up by now had the website been 1001% glitch-free?

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama told Native American leaders Wednesday that he will make his first trip as president to Indian Country next year, expanding on his vow to enhance the bond between the federal and tribal governments.

Obama told the tribal leaders at the fifth annual White House Tribal Nations Conference that the federal government still has work to do to sustain a strong relationship with tribal governments.

Looks like they took another selective, misleading Issa leak and ran with it. Almost as troubling——the fact that every other network immediately picked up the CBS big (and false) scoop and also ran with it. Disgusting, inept, unethical news media.

But Logan’s mea culpa said nothing about other weaknesses in the report that a line-by-line review of the broadcast’s transcript shows. McClatchy obtained the transcript from LexisNexis, a legal research service.

The report repeatedly referred to al Qaida as solely responsible for the attack on the compound and made no mention of Ansar al Shariah, the Islamic extremist group that controls and provides much of the security in restive Benghazi and that has long been suspected in the attack. While the two organizations have worked together in Libya, experts said they have different aims – al Qaida has global objectives while Ansar al Shariah is focused on turning Libya into an Islamic state.

It is an important distinction, experts on those groups said. Additionally, al Qaida’s role, if any, in the attack has not been determined, and Logan’s narration offered no source for her repeated assertion that it had been.

“I think there are definitely connections, but I am not sure there is command and control” between al Qaida and Ansar al Shariah, said Aaron Y. Zelin of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, who studies insurgent activity in North Africa.

Lara Logan’s lazy, fabricated 60 Minutes segment is going down in flames. Another black eye (or worse) for MSM this year.

Here are the debunked claims in Logan’s “investigation” (direct quotes from article):

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
    #1 and #2
Logan claimed that “it’s now (#1) well established that the Americans were attacked by al Qaida in a (#2) well-planned assault.”

Rather than a long-planned attack, investigators have told McClatchy it was likely planned hours, rather than days, in advance.

Another questionable assertion in the “60 Minutes” report was Logan’s unsourced reference to the Benghazi Medical Center as being “under the control of al Qaida terrorists,” an assertion that McClatchy correspondents on the ground at the time and subsequent reporting in Benghazi indicates is untrue.

    #4 (questionable)
The piece also named three known insurgent operators as top suspects in the attack but did not explain the source of that assertion…
If there is new evidence that any of the men were involved, the segment did not detail what it was or how Logan knew about it.

The piece closed with a picture of a document outlining Stevens’ schedule for Sept. 12, “a day (Stevens) did not live to see.” According to the piece, “When a member of our team went to the U.S. compound earlier this month, he found remnants of the Americans’ final frantic moments still scattered on the ground.”

Since “60 Minutes” acknowledgement that Davies had lied in his interviews, CBS also has not explained how Davies came to play such a major role in the segment and what role if any his connection to CBS-owned Threshold Editions had in his prominence. Threshold, which also has published books by former Vice President Dick Cheney, Republican strategist Karl Rove and conservative commentator Glenn Beck, withdrew Davies’ book from circulation last week.
    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Reminder, Threshold Books chief editor is Mary Matalin.

Yes, mentioned this in an earlier blog. NBC out of Philly had a story last night and repeated it this morning about a woman with type 1 diabetes who went to the exchange in PA and found a new insurance for less than what she had. She was thrilled. When her current carrier found out , it matched her new cost. She was very happy.

    • 88 dotster3
      November 13, 2013 at 6:48 pm

I just answered my own question—-Todd is doing the report on Nightly News on the Obamacare numbers, and his reporting is despicable, no honest look at the numbers at all, no perspective. He said the enrollment numbers were really “grim”, “frightening low numbers”, a “nightmare” for President Obama, Democrats are panicking, there’s increasing talk of abandoning the program altogether. You would have thought he was reporting on some mass murder, such was his demeanor. And I wouldn’t care at all about Chuck Todd, but NBC has a big audience, and he’s sending this garbage out across the country. He gave the most negative slant possible. It was pure ugliness.
I think Chuck Todd hates PBO as much, or more, than anyone.

You’re right about Todd’s hatred. The Republicans decided they could not get rid of the ACA legislatively, so this is their new tactic. They are beneath contempt.

listened to the nbc nightly news long enough to hear what they are covering for the aca. Interestingly it is nearly the exact same thing I heard on NPR on the way home. They focused on a 27,000 number, the 106,000 number and continued to hair on fire ACA with glittering key words like “disaster” and “Troubled”. They are all playing from the same script. I’m sending them UT’s tweets.

Court Authorizes IRS to Issue Summonses for Records Relating to U.S. Taxpayers with Offshore Bank Accounts
Five Banks Directed to Produce Records for Accounts at Zurcher Kantonalbank, The Bank of
N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited and Affiliates

U.S. District Judge Kimba M. Wood of the Southern District of New York entered an order on Nov. 7, 2013, authorizing the IRS to issue summonses requiring Bank of New York Mellon (Mellon) and Citibank NA (Citibank) to produce information about U.S. taxpayers who may be evading or have evaded federal taxes by holding interests in undisclosed accounts at Zurcher Kantonalbank and its affiliates (collectively, ZKB) in Switzerland; and U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman of the Southern District of New York entered an order today authorizing the IRS to issue summonses requiring Mellon, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase Bank NA (JPMorgan), HSBC Bank USA NA (HSBC), and Bank of America NA (Bank of America) to produce similar information in connection with undisclosed accounts at The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited and its affiliates (collectively, Butterfield) in the Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Malta, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Tax Division Kathryn Keneally, and Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Danny Werfel made the announcement today.

In these actions, the Court granted the IRS permission to serve what are known as “John Doe” summonses on Mellon, Citibank, JPMorgan, HSBC, and Bank of America. The IRS uses John Doe summonses to obtain information about possible tax fraud by individuals whose identities are unknown. The John Doe summonses approved today direct these five banks to produce records identifying U.S. taxpayers with accounts at ZKB, Butterfield and their affiliates, including other foreign banks that used ZKB and Butterfield’s U.S. correspondent accounts at Mellon, Citibank, JPMorgan, HSBC, and Bank of America to service U.S. clients.

“These cases once again demonstrate the department’s resolve to uncover and identify taxpayers who tried to hide money overseas as a way to avoid federal taxes,” said Assistant Attorney General Keneally. “These John Doe summonses will provide information about individuals using financial institutions from Switzerland to the Cayman Islands to Hong Kong to avoid their U.S. tax obligations. U.S. taxpayers still holding accounts who have not come clean should come forward and do the right thing before it’s too late.”

The thing is, though, that even this one-million number highlights both the perils and the potential upsides in not getting the damn website fixed. It shows us that if it isn’t fixed demand isn’t going to matter at all — enrollment will be very low, regardless of demand, putting Obamacare’s long term prospects in peril. But if it does get fixed, of course, you could see a real enrollment spike.
“Assuming the website gets fixed, I would assume a surge of enrollment in December, and another surge in March,” Levitt tells me.
Meanwhile, the 100,000 number is getting a lot of attention, but the report also finds nearly 400,000 were determined eligible for Medicaid. “In total that’s over 500,000 people who signed up for insurance in the midst of a tumultuous launch,” Levitt says. “People make a distinction between the marketplace and Medicaid, but those are both elements of the Affordable Care Act — both are mechanisms to get people insured.”

Another Good Read…..inline with UT’s Tweets.

ccording to HHS calculations, 846,852 people have used the site to complete applications. That means they have created accounts and submitted information to see whether they are eligible for federal programs or tax credits. Those applications include people applying for households with multiple members. In total, it represents 1,509,883 people. The federal government has processed applications for the vast majority of them—98 percent, or 1,477,853 people. Of those, about a third have actually selected a health plan or been deemed eligible for a program like Medicaid. That’s 502,466.

How does that half million break down? About four out of five (396,261) are in Medicaid. The rest (106,185) of them have picked private insurance plans. These numbers include both those who enrolled through the website that the federal government is maintaining (healthcare.gov) and those who enrolled through sites that states like California, Kentucky, and Connecticut are running on their own. The majority (three-fourths) of the people getting private insurance have done so through state sites. Just a quarter, or 26,794, have enrolled through the federal site.

Even if the rate of sign ups remained the same (medicaid & exchanges) it means that by the time Obama gives his State Of The Union Address in February he will be able to say that in just the 4 month existence of the ACA we’ve gotten 2 million people health coverage. Of course I expect the rate of signups to pick up quite a bit, but even at this current pace, being able to say to a TV audience of 45 million people that the ACA is getting people covered at the rate of half a million per month is a pretty compelling statement.
