Congrats on first, Bobfr. Another fine round-up, UT!

An excellent primer on how the private health insurance industry actually works.

If Republicans were interested in working with Democrats to improve Obamacare and reduce the economic distortions it creates, they could fix this group’s problem. For example, they could restrict the value of the tax exclusion for employer-provided coverage (shrinking a needless tax benefit for rich people like Sen. Ted Cruz) and use the savings to extend the subsidy range above the 400% of FPL mark.

Reforms like this, needless to say, are not high on the Republican policy agenda.

As evidenced by his comments today, our President knows exactly how to further correct these unfair and totally avaricious imbalances. The plutocrats know they’ve met a formidable opponent and reveal everyday, through the actions of their GOP and NEWSTAINER minions, how desperate they are becoming.

      They’ve seen nothing yet!

        • October 30, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Well, I’m not sure. The exchanges have been open a month and they said they would release monthly figures. I’m not sure how they’re marking the timeframe.

Hopefruit: I’d like you to know that all my “troubles today” can be laid at your door.

            1) I had to explain to my literal offspring why my impersonation tomorrow will not be trolling and why it’s okay for me to do this, but not right for GOP-ers to troll

            2) I was trying to set up a new account to use for my persona tomorrow and all I’ve managed is to aggravate my soul and give myself a mini-headache

Oh no..what’s the matter dear vc? No need to set up a separate Twitter account…just post on TOD, and say “Mark Knoller here” and then carry on as Knoller would…

When you are posting as vc, you won’t preface it with “Mark Knoller here” of course, and we will know by reading your post whether you are just vc, or wether you are impersonating Mark!!

I hope that helps – you can first wait and see how a few of us do it tomorrow, and you will have no problems joining in!!

In lieu of the dumb Keystone XL protesters today in Boston, a timely must read:

Maplecroft’s head of environment, James Allan, said that identifying where the risks of climate change were going to be highest was “now an imperative for both business and governments.”

“Framing the risks in economic terms makes the issue harder to ignore, especially for business, and it may prompt better preparedness planning,” he said. “Nothing prompts corporate or political action faster than having to deal with the aftermath of an extreme climate event.”London and Paris were the only two cities ranked as “low risk,” while Iceland, followed by Norway and Ireland, were the least vulnerable countries. In September, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its latest assessment report, a benchmark study on global warming involving the efforts of nearly 1,000 researchers around the world. It expressed widespread, rising confidence among scientists the climate is warming, that humans are responsible for at least half of the increase in temperatures since the 1950s.

New York City Council has voted to raise the minimum age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21.

New York will now become by far the most populous place in the US to impose such a high age limit, the Associated Press reports.

The new age limit includes electronic vapour cigarettes.

Across the US there is a minimum age for smoking of 18. Some states have raised the limit to 19 and at least two other towns have raised it to 21.

Wendy Davis could have been barred from voting by Texas’ new law. She was saved only by a change in the law that she herself pushed.

Chips, can you help me get my 2nd twitter account going? No one else is answering and I’ve been fiddling with it since about 5pm! I wanted it to be ready so i could use it tomorrow.

I opened a new twitter account today, but can’t seem to access it to send tweets. It’s been driving me crazy all afternoon trying to figure out what to do next. /wailing/ No one will explain how I can get both accounts to work!

            October 30, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Either you didn’t set up the new twitter account correctly or if you used the same email address (and twitter might not allow that – I’m not quite sure), then Twitter might think you’re some sort of spam bot. If the problem persists, then contact Twitter or their FAQ/Help. Or ask Jovie how he continuously has new Twitter accounts.

Thanks for answering, Utal. Yes, twitter won’t allow the same email address. (They TOLD me. 😀 ) Jovie is ignoring me, so I guess my options are diminishing…

          • October 30, 2013 at 9:44 pm

Aaaaaaah, okay! When you say you can’t access it, are you logging out of your original account and signing in to your new one??

              October 30, 2013 at 10:03 pm

I somehow got the idea somewhere that I had to use two different browsers, so I BELIEVE that’s how I set things up. New account is in tweetdeck on WE, and old account shows up both on WE and FF.
Don’t worry about it, CC! No sense me depressing anyone else. I’ll stick with the old. It’s just that I thought for a while earlier that I was going to ‘grow’ technologically by my ‘inspired’ participation tomorrow. 😕 I actually feel better that I got a few answers and am not still sitting here hitting my head against the virtual wall. Thanks, guys.

What do you mean “get my 2nd twitter account going.” If you want to create another twitter account, just follow the steps that were provided in creating the first twitter account.

You might need a different email address (not quite sure) – if that’s what’s holding you up.

        • 63 vcprezofan2
          October 30, 2013 at 9:39 pm

I got a new address. Entered it via tweetdeck and it seems to have accepted it, but then the tweet I tried to send won’t go. It twirls around and around forever.

        • 66 vcprezofan2
          October 30, 2013 at 9:40 pm

I even sent a message from my regular account to the new one, but can’t find where it ended up.

          • October 30, 2013 at 9:44 pm

You don’t need a different address but they are very separate, distinct accounts with different logins and passwords. They don’t talk to each other so you can’t just switch back and forth without logging out and then logging back in using whichever login and password.

            Does this help?

            • 68 vcprezofan2
              October 30, 2013 at 9:55 pm

I have the 2 separate logins and p-words etc. but every time I click on I get old faithful. Then when I get the new one , my tweet won’t go anywhere, and the 2 tweets I sent from the old to the new can’t find their way there!

Yes it does help that you answered me, Meta, ’cause I’ve had a few hours feeling invisible (on this subject anyways). Don’t worry, I’m about washing my hands of this idea I had. 😐

STANDING OVATION for UC Pres Napolitano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • October 30, 2013 at 10:29 pm

Napolitano’s statement seems in line with Gov Brown’s DREAM act that he signed earlier this year.

Glad to see some financial aid to help some of the most worthy and hardworking students.

Cannot understand how GOP can be against in-state tuition for students that meet residency requirements, whether they have legal documentation or not.

GOP seems to be digging their heels in on being meaner every year.

I am so glad Janet Napolitano decided to join sane Californians. I am not sure the state she governed, with all the crazies that surfaced after President Obama was elected, would have welcomed her back after serving in the Obama Administration.

For Dotster, if she’s still hangin’ out. (She mentioned that there’s something wrong with Boehner, crying at the Churchill bust dedication today).

    Here’s proof.

    • 129 Nena20409
      October 31, 2013 at 11:27 am

      Churchill is from UK.

John Boehner’s ancestry is French. Why was he weeping again? There was a picture where POTUS was looking at Boehner at the Foley Memorial event and Boehner was weeping there too.

The man is a weeper. The Foley memorial event, I get. But the Churchill Bust unveiling event is just telling that Boehner has some deep seated emotional issues.
