Planet POV: Obama Won’t Let Me Keep My Crappy Health Care

Whenever he has been promoting Obamacare, President Obama has always said, “If you like your current plan, you can keep it.” Under my current health care plan, I pay a premium that I can afford and now, because that plan doesn’t qualify for the minimum coverage required by Obamacare, my insurance company sent me a letter saying that they are ending that plan. That is not fair, it makes me sick to think I supported Obamacare… though unfortunately my current plan won’t cover that.

…. Some people have asked me, why would I want to keep a health insurance plan that provides little to no benefits to me and if ever needed, could evade covering me and bankrupt me and I explain to them, “It was a bargain!”

…. in this increasingly tyrannical government, I suppose I have no choice but to pay more for health insurance than I was paying just to get it to provide me with something in return.

Spandan (The People’s View): Why Losing Your Junk Insurance is a Good Thing

For the past week or so, the media has been replete with stories about people getting letters from their insurance companies that cancel their current coverage and replace it with a more expensive health insurance plan, providing the insured the option to look into their state’s exchange for coverage. Insurance companies are doing their damnest to blame the Affordable Care Act and President Obama for this, but the truth is that the policies that are being canceled are being canceled for one reason and one reason alone: they do not meet the minimum coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act.

So what are these minimum coverage requirements? They are simple and essential….

ThinkProgress: Democratic Congressman Blows Up At GOP During Obamacare Hearing: ‘Are You Really Serious?’

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) slammed Republicans for failing to support the Affordable Care Act once it became law, challenging them to go back to their districts and tell their constituents that they’ll be taking away their coverage.

“What are you going to do about the approximately 17 million children with preexisting conditions who can no longer be denied health insurance coverage,” Parscrell asked the GOP during a House hearing on Obamacare. Standing up and pointing his finger at the other side of the aisle, he continued, “We want to go back and want to say you are no longer covered any longer — are you going to tell the parents of those kids?”

ThinkProgress: Obamacare Is Radically Changing The Individual Insurance Market — And That’s A Very Good Thing

Reading and watching news coverage about individuals and families receiving notices that their current health care plans don’t meet the minimum requirements of the Affordable Care Act, you’d think that insurers have never before cancelled people’s health care coverage. It’s as if the individual health care market had offered substantive and comprehensive insurance before the law came along in 2010 and forced the good and trusted folks at Wellpoint, Aetna, Cigna, or United Health to suddenly undo your plan.

So it’s easy to forget in all the decontextualized reporting why the law’s minimum standards were written in the first place and what kind of policies they’re seeking to regulate.

National Journal: The Fight of Obamacare’s ‘Navigators’ Against Republican Hurdles

As Republicans in Washington prepare to grill Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday over problems a broken website is creating for accessing Obamacare, their fellow party members in a dozen-and-a-half states have added complications for people trying to access those benefits through alternate means.

…. whether by fees, background checks, tests, extra training, certifications, threats of civil penalties, or delays, Republican legislatures and officials in at least 17 states across the country have thrown up all manner of bureaucratic roadblocks in front of the program.

… To pro-Obamacare advocates like Ethan Rome, the executive director of Health Care for America Now, attacking the administration over problems with HealthCare.gov while also obstructing the work of the navigators in the states is “jaw-dropping, turbo-charged hypocrisy.”…

ThinkProgress: The Republicans Grilling Sebelius Prevented Uninsured From Enrolling In Obamacare In Other Ways

As Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testifies about the rocky implementation of Obamacare before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday, she’ll be speaking to Republicans members who have sought to prevent uninsured Americans from obtaining coverage outside of the troubled HealthCare.gov.

…. last month, fifteen Republican members of the Committee, including Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), requested detailed responses and thousands of pages of documents from approximately 60 percent of the so-called “Navigator” organizations … The lawmakers gave the groups just two weeks to provide detailed written descriptions of their employees and activities, interactions with the Department of Health and Human Services, and “all documentation and communication related to your grant.”

Media Matters: The View Mainstreams Serial Misinformer Betsy McCaughey As A “Health Care Policy Expert”

ABC’s The View hosted Betsy McCaughey to attack the Affordable Care Act (ACA), praising her as a “health care policy expert” and ignoring her history of misinformation, including inventing the persistent lie that the health care law contains “death panels.”

On the October 29 edition of The View, co-host Barbara Walters introduced a segment with McCaughey by calling her a “health care policy expert” and asking if health care consumers “were not told the truth by the Obama administration,” saying, “they are about to lose their current medical plans and they don’t know what they are getting instead.” The View provided no background about McCaughey aside from naming her as the author of a book opposing the ACA.

McCaughey, who is by no means a “health care policy expert,” has no credibility to comment on the ACA….

Steve Benen: John Boehner’s ‘wet blanket’

…. Speaker Boehner and his Republican colleagues, for example, recently shut down the government for reasons even they can’t explain, which clearly undermined the economy. They also threatened a sovereign debt crisis, which didn’t do the economy any favors, either. At the same time, they’re backing a sequestration policy that, we know with certainty, is severely holding the economy back. Indeed, the Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that if Congress ended the sequester, it would add up to an additional 1 million new jobs in the United States in 2014.

Boehner wants to talk about economic wet blankets? I’m delighted. If he would agree, today, to end government-shutdown threats, permanently end debt-ceiling crises, and scrap the painful-by-design sequestration policy, the economy would see an immediate boost. That’s not conjecture; it’s just reality….

Kurt Eichenwald: How Big Corporations Are Stealing Your Tax Dollars (and Hurting Themselves) by Underpaying Their Employees

You are paying tax dollars to McDonald’s. And to Walmart. And to untold numbers of other major international corporate giants. And that money coming out of your pocket goes straight to the bottom line of those companies’ income statements.

This is not hyperbole. It is the twisted, truly sick outcome of a system that most Americans don’t understand but that many pump their fists and wave their flags in order to preserve. My bottom line: Americans are being lied to by some of the best prevaricators in the country—corporations, G.O.P. politicians, and economically obtuse pundits—turning many of them against their fellow citizens in order to pump up profits to levels that these corporate managers could not achieve through their own skill and acumen.

Benjy Sarlin (MSNBC): Widely mocked Heritage report returns

Conservative advocacy group Heritage Action is loading Republican lawmakers up with anti-immigration talking points ahead of a massive lobbying push by right-leaning supporters of reform.

Some of the talking points appear to reference a study that was co-authored by a Heritage scholar who resigned earlier this year after news broke that his Harvard thesis claimed Latinos are inherently less intelligent.

The report itself was widely mocked for its estimates on the cost of immigration reform.

Heritage may have distanced itself from its former scholar’s views on race, but not the study he did for their think tank.

Breaking news on local NY stations:
NYPD Police Commisioner Ray Kelly was unable to deliver his planned speech at Brown University yesterday because hecklers challenging his Stop and Frisk policies could not be contained. They shouted him down until university cancelled the event.

The University made apologies and called for “civil behavior” from the protestors.

It becomes “uncivil behavior” when people stand up for themselves.

I think uncivil behavior is more accurately described by the acts of Stop and Frisk, or Shop, Stop and Frisk for that matter.
Also entirely uncivil behavior to deprive the hungry food assistance they depend upon.

My stomach was in knots waiting for the hearings to begin but I agree I think Secretary Sebelius has been doing a great job with the hypocrites so far. All we are getting from them is a flurry of shiny objects. Their crocodile tears are laughable. Could you believe Marsha Blackburn talking loud and saying nothing. What a drama queen. I thought Shimkus was going to blow a gasket. And Mike Rogers whining about security was priceless.

I have to say my favorite pit bull Henry Waxman has been fabulous. I just love him. He doesn’t take any guff from anybody. I loved watching the hearings when he was the chairman.

Oh dear, now we have Phil Gingrey huffing and puffing about the grandfathered plans that were screwing folks in the individual market. Getting a notice that these dishonest plans are being cancelled should be welcome news. It’s hilarious that these folks really want to continue being screwed by their insurance companies just because they hate President Obama. smdh

I have severe sinus troubles and there is no medication that I can take(as of this writing) for it because of my tummy and heart condition. However, I had a good night rest, and the little run out to get the cake is not too far. I am so darn independent that it makes my family take a little “tight squeeze” on the phone to track me down. I try not to do things that will impose on their time in their space by not being sensible though. I mentioned cheesecake, and my brother simply said,”Be careful and reasonable.” I know when he makes a statement like that, he means exactly that. I do not want to hurt anyone else by making a not so well thought out decision, but few people can handle food situations for me. I will do the right thing. HZ

Pierce is at it again. Another great read concerning the 27 GOP Senators who voted yesterday to disavow their votes to lift the debt ceiling:

Consider what it means. For 12 days, the government shut down, and the country flirted with default, because a rump faction of the House Of Representatives in the worst Congress ever elected, led by a renegade senator from Texas who belongs in a zoo, scared the entire Republican party into a dangerous inertia. Finally, with even the Chamber of Commerce howling in anger, the Senate voted a stop-gap measure aimed at keeping the absolute worst from happening. It managed to pass the House, primarily through Democratic votes. The worst was averted. Temporarily. Now, while we’re all hanging fire to see what happens after the first of the year, the people who did the right thing, and helped the country avoid the fiscal abyss, find themselves obligated, essentially, to apologize to the people who did the most damage, and to the people who supported them, because, otherwise, there might be a political price to be paid for not wrecking the economy. This is not leadership. This is submitting to an ideological show trial because you want to keep your job at the expense of actually doing your job.

It is always important to look at the people whom politicians fear the most. Fear is a great motivator. It is certainly a more than adequate mirror. It is a good way to judge the character of individual politicians and the collective responsibility of a political party or a congressional caucus. Identify what they’re afraid of. Identify the people they believe can do them the most damage. Do that, and you discover a great deal about their commitment to the public good. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, major national Republican politicians, almost unanimously, man and woman, old and young, are terrified of madness. They seek to appease it. They seek to delay its inevitable vengeance. They seek to reason, symbolically, with unreason. They are willing to sacrifice the common good for that. They are willing to look ridiculous in public rather than risk the abandoned wrath of people beyond the ability of anyone to conciliate. They jump at shadows. They freeze, motionless, at every rustling in the bushes.

Thinking about sub par insurance plans….When my daughter started teaching, it was at a Charter school, we were so thrilled because she had health insurance. Well…….it covered NOTHING! She had to use one of the after hours clinics once, and that treatment was not covered…..she knew that it was a totally useless policy, but the money came out of her paycheck for it.
I had worked for good public schools, and had good health insurance…..WAY back when, because the Teachers’ association negotiated for us. However, even with that good policy in California, maternity benefits were not included.
These charter schools get by with the cheapest of everything they can. Teachers have no clout, the CEO or whatever the head person is called, calls all the shots, and can fire at will…no protection whatsoever.
She married a man who belongs to the Sheetmetal workers Union……what GREAT insurance! Covers dental, prescrips, they get a free physical every year…..the POWER of groups and negotiation.
These people with individual insurance plans, need to understand that by buying on the exchanges, they will be receiving the benefits of group plans…..they just don’t know the people in the group.

It’s really, really annoying. I’m seeing stupid stuff, offensive stuff, creepy stuff and stuff that just doesn’t interest me in the least. Infuriating and a disincentive.

I hate that stuff. I delete it in my inbox. Something I can eliminate in Settings, I’m sure. I just haven’t made it a huge priority.

Yes, that seems like a Mother Goose/Inception type wormhole!

If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Something’s seriously wrong with Boehner. No grown man should be crying so easily at every event. Now he’s sobbing about Churchill???

For your daily dose of cuteness:

(Since Hurricane Sandy and Sandy Hook happened around the same time last year, sometimes get confused when I see “Sandy” because my mind adds the “Hook”).

But this is about Hurricane Sandy’s one year anniversary:

BTW, @nycjim announced on his twitter feed that he’s moving to Mashable, the Twitter-focused website. Great match-up at mashable. Good for both parties, I think. Will follow @nycjim on twitter, whereever he goes.

An excellent primer on how the Private insurance actually works.

If Republicans were interested in working with Democrats to improve Obamacare and reduce the economic distortions it creates, they could fix this group’s problem. For example, they could restrict the value of the tax exclusion for employer-provided coverage (shrinking a needless tax benefit for rich people like Sen. Ted Cruz) and use the savings to extend the subsidy range above the 400% of FPL mark.

Reforms like this, needless to say, are not high on the Republican policy agenda.

I guess the big ACA “issue” now is regarding cancellation of policies; therefore, the President was not forthcoming when he said that if you like your policy you can keep it.

I find it hard to believe that this is the first notice that policy holders have gotten regarding their sub-par policies. If people are unhappy with the changes, then the insurance companies are not doing a good job of explaining it. That, or people are so caught up in “cancel” and/or “increase in premium” that they are not paying attention to the rest of the information. Of course, there are those that are looking for a negative related to the ACA, so they are going to ignore the positives.

Alert! NSA related! The View’s Sherri Shepherd warns today that our TVs now have cameras watching us! If ‘they’ see sex stuff, or talk of same, then we will be assaulted with an avalanche of ads relating to, or enhancing, same. Hmmmmm. I was trying to think of what ads I’m getting—–lots of lifestyle lift ads—-I guess ‘they’ are noticing I could use a mini-facelift. Rude! And lots of pharmaceuticals. Insulting! And some ad that keeps flashing, “Stop laughing!” Wonder why ‘they’ hate funny. Get outta my house, NSA!
The dumbing of America continues daily on The View.

The bullying, ugly treatment of Sebelius by these hate-filled Repubs is shameful. I saw a guy behind her just shaking his head in disbelief at this embarrassing, political sham of an inqusition, at this disgusting preposterous display.

Maplecroft’s head of environment, James Allan, said that identifying where the risks of climate change were going to be highest was “now an imperative for both business and governments.”

“Framing the risks in economic terms makes the issue harder to ignore, especially for business, and it may prompt better preparedness planning,” he said. “Nothing prompts corporate or political action faster than having to deal with the aftermath of an extreme climate event.”London and Paris were the only two cities ranked as “low risk,” while Iceland, followed by Norway and Ireland, were the least vulnerable countries. In September, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its latest assessment report, a benchmark study on global warming involving the efforts of nearly 1,000 researchers around the world. It expressed widespread, rising confidence among scientists the climate is warming, that humans are responsible for at least half of the increase in temperatures since the 1950s.

      Good Afternoon TODers.

Perhaps they….TBGOPers were aware that HHS Secy was not able to disprove of their charges as she sat there. The Dems Staffers should have given information to their bosses to refute that assertion that the Healthcare.gov was not down.

Someone needed to sen information to dispute that as HHS Secy was live testifying.
