Sebelius has the patience of a saint. She was yelled at, rudely interrupted over and over again, while speaking, had sexist pigs like Joe Barton telling her, you may come from Kansas, but we’re not in Kansas anymore, had Republicans yelling at her to be fired, to drop her government insurance (which these hypocrites partake of) and go on the exchanges; which she can’t do as it would be illegal.

Loved when one of those blowhards finished yelling and Sebelius’s response was “Whatever” – classic!

No one learned anything new and it was a perfect example of why the GOP has abysmal ratings.

    • October 30, 2013 at 1:02 pm

      PERFECT summation. Thank you.

    • October 30, 2013 at 1:06 pm

I haven’t been watching the hearings. Are they actually asking questions or just ranting?

      • October 30, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Just the usual posturing. And the GOP were really rude to Sec. Sebelius. You could see by the end of this circus she was really ready to just scream.

      • 13 utaustinliberal
        October 30, 2013 at 1:22 pm

Mostly ranting. The hearing is over. Congressman Gardner from Colorado dropped his government insurance because LIBERTY and Pres. Obama is a SOCIALIST or whatever and he was whining that his private insurance dropped him. Which is most likely not true. They probably gave him a 90 day notice and offered him new more comprehensive (coverage wise) options. He kept yelling at Sec. Sebelius and demanding that she drop her government insurance. They weren’t interested in asking questions or looking for solutions, they were just yelling, rudely interrupting her, questioning her intelligence, pretty much insulting her.

Another GOP Rep wanted Sebelius to explain why one Pizza hut in his town dropped health insurance for the employees. Hmm…maybe because the CEO is a conservative douchebag?

It was all for grandstanding and playing to their conservative base.

        • October 30, 2013 at 1:39 pm

As I suspected it would be. Thanks UT and Meta. I know I wouldn’t have had the stomach to sit through that.

What a waste of time and resources. I think about all the real work that could be (and could have been) going on instead of all the superfluous hearings on the non-issues/non-scandals that we are being subjected to.

      October 30, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Really appreciate your summary, UT, because I was heartbroken even thinking that decent woman had to be subjected to that cruelty and I couldn’t watch. Please tell me that’s the end of the damn House hearings that involve her.

#Whatever = love it!!!! Never been to Kansas, but I’d go there just to hug her and have a glass of wine together, laughing that Rs thought they could bring her down.

        October 30, 2013 at 1:32 pm

You’re welcome, Jacqueline. They informed her that they will most likely be holding another hearing in December and if they do so, they will require her presence. So, get ready for another circus.

          October 30, 2013 at 1:35 pm

I detest every last one of them.

But like Sec. Sebelius, who actually cares about the American people unlike Rs, I shall move on and have lunch.

In my dreams, I could see Pres, Obama go into the hearing, rip the mic cord out of the wall, and say, “Kathleen, you’re not putting up with this bullshit any longer – we’re going to lunch! I’m buyin’.”

    • October 30, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Well, UT, I also learned that Sebellius is a woman of grace and intelligence and was an excellent pick for HHS secretary. I learned that the GOP constituency is shrinking by the minute as decent people who saw this kangaroo court of a hearing were repelled by the loutish and uncouth yahoos who called themselves Republican Congressmen.

    “When discredited nonsense gets recycled”

In the spring, the Heritage Foundation published a report conservative Republicans could ostensibly use to justify their reflexive opposition to the bipartisan proposal.

The result was a fiasco. First, the report itself was exposed as ridiculous, even by conservatives who often agree with Heritage, relying on lazy and incomplete scholarship. Second, one of the report’s co-authors was a guy by the name of Jason Richwine, who’s spent quite a bit of time arguing that white people are inherently more intelligent than people of color.

And yet, as MSNBC reported yesterday, Heritage hasn’t given up on its document just yet. Heritage may have distanced itself from its former scholar’s views on race, but not the study he did for their think tank. In May, Heritage’s report said immigration reform would cost over $6 trillion – a figure even many on the right found laughable. Soon after, independent analyses, including a report from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, found that the reform package would actually save hundreds of billions of dollars.

It appears the Heritage Foundation simply hopes lawmakers have forgotten what transpired six months ago…that enough time has passed that it can start repeating the identical bogus claims all over again.

    • October 30, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Sw, the GOP appears to be very busy discarding one constituency after another. This will seal the deal with Latinos, making them Democrats for life.

      • October 30, 2013 at 2:20 pm

I agree JackieG. The GOP seems to be putting a lot of effort into self-destruction. Their re-branding strategy seems to be similar to their “repeal and replace” of Obamacare. I just hope that when the destruction is complete, the replacement is not the wacko extremists we are seeing today.

I do have to ask whether some of these insurance companies are converting customers to plans that may be more expensive than others that are available, hoping that people will ignore the notice or forget to follow up by the designated deadline to change to a less expensive plan. Customers would be stuck with the higher priced plan until the next enrollment period, right?

They don’t automatically convert you. They are supposed provide for example, a 90 day notice and also offer a list of options (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) that are equitable to what the same insurance company will be offering on healthcare.gov or the state exchange program and one can also check out healthcare.gov (federal exchange) or your state’s exchange to see if you want to stick with the same insurance company or choose another.

That’s what the House Committee’s treatment of Sec. Sebelius reminded me of today. Let’s make sure that Katherine Sebelius is still HHS Secretary when these guys are defeated in 2014.

Concerning the plans being cancelled. As most people have pointed out, these are called Limited Liability Plans or Limited Benefit Plans, and they have extremely minimal coverage, high deductibles, and place caps on most of their coverage, all things which go against the minimum standards set up by the ACA.

Very few regular insurance companies actually offered these plans. Mostly they were set up by other companies who dabbled in a lot of different things. Almost none of those companies are offering other policies which do meet the ACA standards, which is all you really need to know about the low benefit plans. They were, in essence, cash cows.

Yes, premiums were low, but they were very strict about who would qualify for them, thus minimizing their risk. In a sens, they were much like the life insurance policies that are for air travel only. High intake of money, low output.

It would be too costly for many of these companies to set up more expansive policies knowing that the risk they would be exposed to would be higher. Many of them still sell supplemental income polic ies, such as $100/diem to the policy holder while in the hospital and things like that. They don’t cover actual care and, again, are cash cows for the company.\

Thus, when people say their coverage is being cancelled without being offered another option, they are correct in that the insurance company is not offering them another option. I do know of a couple, however, that have made an effort, when they notify people, to let them know that there are other options available to them, including the exchanges, but those companies are in the minority.

      Great summary, Japa.

Really wish there was a way to force-feed this perspective to the lazy MSM who are quick to find fault with anything this Administration supports but are content to write headlines and refuse to ask even the basic questions about discontinued plans.

I think the thing that pisses me off most (this week at least) is that MSM is basically calling PBO a liar, when he is the most consistently honest politician in living memory. PBO says what he means, and means what he says; easy enough to prove if our MSM weren’t paid handsomely for being so lazy.

Time to use the “F” word — “fraud” — with these insurance policies and with the financial shenanigans by the big banks.

A prominent Republican pollster is urging his party to resist stoking racial anxieties among white voters and “throw in the towel on the immigration issue.”

Freed Steeper, who served as an adviser to both Presidents Bush, told the New York Times in a story published Wednesday that the GOP may continue its struggles in national elections if it keeps up its often derisive rhetoric toward Hispanic voters.

“Racism may be a part of it,” Steeper admitted. “The Republican Party needs to stop pandering to that.”

    “The futility of congressional self-indulgence”

By Steve Benen 10/30/13 02:26 PM

If there was a point to the new Republican congressional hearing on Obamacare, it was hiding well.

The above video was one of the more memorable moments of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s hearing this morning on the Affordable Care Act, but just as important, over the course of about 70 seconds, it also helped capture what made the hearing so pointless.

Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) badgered Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about whether she would enroll for coverage through an exchange – marketplaces designed for those without insurance. Sebelius tried to explain that she doesn’t believe she’s eligible… The more Sebelius tried to explain reality, the more Long badgered. Eventually, the HHS secretary, apparently having reached an emotional limit, was overheard whispering, “don’t do this to me.”

The point… If Republicans hoped to get their sought-after headline – cabinet secretary apologizes for tech troubles – they got it fairly early on and could have sent everyone home early….But instead, Republicans decided they didn’t really want to talk about website issues anyway. Long asked about Sebelius’ insurance; Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) wanted to talk about abortion; Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) wanted to talk about advertising campaigns; Rep. Ralph Hall (R-Tex.) wanted to talk about tricycles…
