NYT: Insurers’ Stocks, Unhurt By The Dawn Of The Health Care Law

From the financial perspective of the health care industry, Obamacare, as the law is often known, doesn’t seem much of a hindrance. In fact, it may even turn out to be positive. Consider the situation of health insurance providers. Because they face new regulations intended to broaden coverage and limit profit-taking, some analysts have been concerned that profits will suffer. But in the run-up to the Affordable Care Act, stock market prices have told a different story.

Over the last 12 months, shares of the top five publicly traded health insurance companies — Aetna, WellPoint, UnitedHealth Group, Humana and Cigna — have increased by an average of 32 percent, while the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index has risen by just 24 percent. Strong profits in the current year, as growth slowed in overall health care costs, is one probable explanation for the outperformance by the group.

HHS.Gov: What’s Working In The Marketplace: The Data Services Hub

To give Americans a better way to shop for health coverage, the federal government and states recently launched Health Insurance Marketplaces.  Yesterday, we announced a clear path forward so that by the end of November, HealthCare.gov will work smoothly for the vast majority of consumers. But you probably haven’t heard about the Data Services Hub which serves as a critical resource for the Marketplaces, both state and federal.

The Hub is a tool to help you and your family get affordable, quality health care. As of yesterday, nearly 700,000 Americans had completed an application through the Marketplaces – more than half of them through the federal Marketplace.  This does not count applications directly to Medicaid and CHIP agencies that also can use the Hub.

Think Progress: ObamaCare Got Some Promising News From The Medical Community Today

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) announced that a record number of students applied to American medical schools in 2013 and that a record number of first-year students has enrolled in medical schools this year. Experts say that’s an encouraging sign in the face of a primary care doctor shortage that will likely be exacerbated by an influx of newly insured Americans seeking medical treatment as the Affordable Care Act goes into effect.

“At a time when the nation faces a shortage of more than 90,000 doctors by the end of the decade and millions are gaining access to health insurance, we are very glad that more students than ever want to become physicians,” said AAMC president Dr. Darrell G. Kirch in a press release. A total of 48,014 students applied to medical schools in 2013, surpassing the previous record that was set in 1996. The number of students enrolled as first-year students also rose above 20,000 for the first time ever.

Morgan Whitaker: Michelle Obama Shows She’s Still Got Her Husband’s Back

First lady Michelle Obama hit the fundraising circuit Friday to help give her husband the Democrat-controlled Congress that could help him further his agenda, and didn’t shy away from blasting her husband’s opponents for shutting down the government in an ultimately fruitless attempt to stall or stop the Affordable Care Act Friday.

“So when a small group of folks in Congress shuts down our government to try to shut down Obamacare, and we watch as our president stands strong, that’s not just some political fight in Washington,” she said at the Women’s Leadership Forum Conference in DC. “It is a battle about our most fundamental values and aspirations.”

I’m looking at the first pic, and I notice that women almost always draw their hands together in front of them when in the Presence of PBO, whether they’re listening to a speech from a distance or whether they’re meeting him in person. You can’t fake that body language – I see it all time, which is why I felt compelled to comment! 🙂 LOL!

the thing that kills me about all this whining about a website?

the disconnect…the utter and absolute disconnect from people who don’t have health insurance.

This is the country that has people who will stand out in the cold in November, for the promise of a $25 DVD PLAYER, and people think folks won’t have the patience of JOB to get HEALTH INSURANCE?

that a website will stop them?

The only people who think that are mofos who have never been without health insurance.

AND they pretend like the only way to enroll is through the website.

    if they meant right..

at the end of everyone of those fucking stories, they’d go….

  9. October 27, 2013 at 10:39 am

    WHO would have thought..

As insane as I think the GOP was…

that they would DELIBERATELY HURT people in their OWN STATES by having GOP GOvernors refusing to expand Medicaid.

And, refusing to set up the state exchanges.

WHO actually thought that the feds would ultimately be responsible for setting up HALF THE EXCHANGES because the GOP Governors refused to do so?

WHO actually thought these mofos were that fucking evil?

I had a low opinion of them, but even I was shocked at the extent of their fucking evil in condemning their working poor to lives without health insurance.

    Always remember:
the feds asked for 5 billion for the rollout…got on billion.

do you not remember Sebelius being forced to go to the healthcare industry for money for the rollout?

do you not read the reports from the states where these GOP evil asses are doing everything they can to put up roadblocks for those folks who have chosen to go out there and help people sign up for Obamacare?

but, I guess it’s too much for the MSM to do their JOB and include all these not so small facts in their ‘ oh no, Obamacare is a disaster because of website glitches’ stories.

After they let the sequester happen and shut down the government, plus inching us towards default I am not surprised by any of their actions. If the moderate GOPs do not want to be lumped in with those crazies they need to show that they are not the same by their actions. They need to quit worrying how standing up for what is best for America will affect them in their gerrymandered districts and show some civil responsibility by not voting in unison with those they say they disagree with since actions not words are what counts.

as for the non-coverage of the good news from Syria:

    I keep on saying this….

they are STILL pissed that POTUS put the kabosh on their Syria War Ratings…

if peace broke out tomorrow and Assad said it was all because of POTUS..

they still wouldn’t give any time to it.

HOW DARE HE mess with all their War Ratings coverage

    the nerve….

        these people are relentless in their efforts to undermine EVERYTHING PBO is doing for us ordinary folks;

we can’t close our eyes for a second before they come up with a new political-dagger aimed squarely at PBO

      GM all. Great response LK.

Hope someone also responds to him to say since Iraq was such a disaster (which he helped cheerlead), the public isn’t likely to ask it to try another one. He is such a colossal RW brown noser. Yuk.

Oh please, David Gregory can talk to the hand. There is nothing he does that remotely resembles real journalism. I have seen him sit and nod his head too many times while somebody in the GOP pouted lies and distortions about President Obama without any challenge. His smarmy remarks about the healthcare rollout is just more evidence that he is perpetually joined at the tonsils with the GOP and the rhetoric. This tweet really takes the cake.

      Suck on this David: http://www.governmentisgood.com

President Obama with kids photos are always my faves. The way kids look at him—–with so much admiration, which is not political at their age but innate. There’s a trust there. And the way he looks at them—-with genuine interest and a special connection. They sense it. Beautiful. It always tells me about all I need to know about this man.

I feel the same way. And on top of it, I have to say that seeing white kids looking at a black president with so much admiration, seeing them feel so comfortable, without even an inch of fear or disrespect, …. it warms my heart. And it gives me hope.

that’s a cool story, but i don’t understand him using “first nonprofit grocery store.” i’ve been a member of nonprofit co-op grocery stores my entire life. they’ve all done extremely well financially and we even get “dividend” payments at the end of each year based upon how much we shopped there. also get a payment based upon shopping history when moving to another city and need to cancel membership at the previous one.

the nonprofit cooperative model is on the rise in a lot of industries, and i think could save all kinds of communities and industries if more people tried it. it’s the opposite of “trickle down economics” and it works!

More than 10,000 people line up in Dallas for information on Obamacare
    October 27, 2013
    By Anomaly
In Texas, a statewide education and outreach event focusing on the new Affordable Care Act drew more than 10,000 people to the Dallas Convention Center on Saturday, which was hosted by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and more than 30 community partners to provide health services and information. This is but a small glimpse into the world of the uninsured, or those with costly insurance coverage looking for reasonable rates.

Dr. Dan McCoy of Blue Cross and Blue Shield said, “There’s safety in having an insurance card in your pocket.”
