    Here’s good news from a state that has been hammered by bad news all summer (due to their RW Gov and state legislature):

    North Carolina apparently has a “hybrid” system, similar to Illinois, no doubt (thanks, 57&F, read your posts from this morning’s thread):

    On Halloween, we’ll have a new Senator from the great state of New Jersey.

    Will this be enough to light a fire under NJ Dems to GOTV the following Tuesday?

    Can you imagine the energy and excitement that will be in that room with Cory and VP Joe? Too, too sad that Sen Booker’s father didn’t live to see the day.

    I may be the only one feeling like this;

    but the ObamaCare “glitches” hysteria in the media (and even among some of PBO’s supporters) reminds me of the public panic & hysteria that followed the first debate with mitt the perpetual liar romney;

    even people who should be more reasonable are in a frenzy over something that is NOT NEW with respect to IT and rollout of a new policy;

    yet if these people stopped and thought about it, they would know that this is exactly what the media and gop want them do => panic, panic, panic & attack the public servants who are doing their best.

    the bottom line is that we need focus on highlighting:

    (a) the positive stories from ordinary citizens who have actually enrolled (an UT has done here, thanks a lot as always);

    (b) mistakes that media personalities/punditry are making about Obamacare facts

    (c) how the gop have undermined the implementation of ObamaCare;

    I am glad that PBO and his team are able to tune out the noise and focus on improving the enrollment experience

      Global, I would also add that all this hype over the website is a way of distracting attention from immigration reform and every other major issue the the Republican House continues to delay and neglect. We have to keep reminding our reps that their job isn’t to critique websites but to pass legislation that actually helps their constituents.

  11. October 23, 2013 at 9:14 pm

    From a TOD regular.

    BobFR could probably chime in on this. I confess to not understanding how the evolution to single payer will happen, but it seems inevitable to me (I’m guessing within the decade).

    • October 23, 2013 at 10:05 pm

      If States default to having the Federal Government provide the only portal for affordable care for the citizens of their State then, at an opportune time, let’s say after #LandslideDEMS2014, the House and Senate can pass legislation early in 2015 that provides care to all those eligible for Medicaid (up to 133% above the poverty level) and anyone else seeking care in those States via Medicare and the hell with private carriers via the Federal exchange serving those States. If insurance companies had a clue they’d be forcing all those GOP Governors to adopt #Obamacare now – but – GREED KILLS.

      • 28 globalcitizenlinda
        October 23, 2013 at 10:43 pm

        a few weeks ago, there were additional reports of a portion of ObamaCare that Team Obama asked to be formulated in such a way that it cuts across state lines. How does this fit into the picture of the single payer goal?

        thanks in advance

        • October 23, 2013 at 10:57 pm

          Anything that enables the Federal Government to become the provider of health care undermines the insurance industry. As long as we elect a Democratic Majority to the House and Senate in 2014 then in 2015 the aggregation of care in all those States that did not implement their own exchanges can begin – and that aggregation will be single payer via Medicare. The long term consequence is America will have universal health care via Medicare – and join the ranks of the other civilized societies on the planet that have been providing affordable access to medical care to their entire citizenry.

          Yes WE Can

    All this hype and false info reminds me of the kerfuffle leading up to January 1, 2000…..remember all the Y2K nonsense? That was also ill-founded, and ignorant, and based on a fear of technology, and a total misunderstanding of it. Remember all the doomsday scenarios? One young student in our department at college, had to go to her husband’s family’s compound in Arkansas for that weekend, because the father in law was so sure the world was going to come crashing down, and he and his family in the bunker would be the only ones to survive.
    I’m so old, I can also remember 1948 when Israel became a state, and the cover of Time magazine wondered if this meant the end of the world. All this hair on fire is stupid.
    Why don’t these people get upset about children not having enough food, wives being abused by husbands, children getting shot at school or home, youngsters not able to attend Head Start…….you get my drift.
    These people need to get upset about REAL problems.

    • October 23, 2013 at 9:47 pm

      The Year 2000 was an event that needed to be understood and resolved before Sept 9, 1999.

      I worked for a bank (in the operations area, not IT or casino investment area) and we had a legacy system that used 999 some kind of stop-gap default (not technical at all). And our legacy system had only 2 digits for the year. We were supposed to have replaced the system with one with a 3-digit year, but it didn’t happen before 2000.

      And there were tons of files that were exchanged between banks and vendors, so lots of possibilites had to be thoroughly tested. In fact, we had a relative of a colleague in Australia test his ATM card because 2000 happened first there.

      But everyone was prepared and spent the resources necessary to develop a game plan and test everything thoroughly, so 2000 was thankfully a non-event.

      MSM is being unbelievably lazy, reporting this short-lived story in such apocalyptic terms that when the kinks are worked out (as it appears is happening now) they will look just as clueless as they did with Syria and everything else they got wrong this year.

      I’m hoping the general public is becoming aware that the MSM reports from the elite’s perspective. No one the MSM knows is without health insurance, and a few hundred bucks in their monthly budget doesn’t make much difference to them.

      How long will the MSM be able to ignore the good news side of this story?

      • October 23, 2013 at 10:08 pm

        RE: MSM/NEWSTAINERS – “they will look just as clueless as they did with Syria and everything else they got wrong this year.”

    You Lose Virginia, You Lose the Presidency by BooMan – Wed Oct 23rd, 2013 at 10:29:41 PM EST

    “If you go to 270towin.com, you can use their Electoral College calculator to play around with the results. What I want you to do is to load up the 2016 map and then try changing different states from blue to red until you find a combination of states that Romney lost that some future Republican presidential candidate might win that would be sufficient to win them the election. I’ll give you a straightforward example. If a Republican were to hold all the states that Romney won and add Florida, Virginia, Ohio, and New Hampshire, they would get exactly 270 electoral votes, the minimum required to win the presidential election.

    But here is my wrinkle. Try getting to 270 for the Republicans without giving them Virginia.

    There are a couple of possibilities, but they aren’t too promising. Simply replacing Virginia with Colorado and Nevada would do it, but those states’ demographics are moving rapidly out of reach for the Republicans. Maybe Colorado and Iowa would be a slightly more plausible bet. Neither of those combinations would work, however, if the Republicans could not win New Hampshire. If you take New Hampshire out of the picture, either the Republicans would have to win Colorado, Nevada, and Iowa, or they’d have to flip a big industrial state in the Midwest that hasn’t voted for a Republican since 1992.

    All these scenarios presuppose that the Republicans can carry North Carolina, which John McCain could not do in 2008 and Mitt Romney barely accomplished in 2012. As I said, too, these scenarios presuppose that the Republicans can carry Florida and Ohio, which neither McCain nor Romney were able to do.

    when this story first broke, I suspected that it was cantor – based on earlier (months ago) reporting that he had said something very stupid to PBO and was “stunned” when POTUS immediately checked him about his behavior

    I don’t know the validity of this information – just presented it because of earlier discussion people carried on here; so take it with a grain of salt

    I think PBO wants us to move on so I will respect that;

      Well, I am sure if it was Eric Cantor who said that, our mature and gracious President would have probably let it ride because he knows that he is the President and not the sniveling snake, Eric Cantor. For whatever it’s worth, someone should tell Eric Cantor that some regular people, like me, can’t stand to look at him with his fake self! Moreover, Cantor needs to know that he probably will never occupy the highest political position in this country: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Cantor should be constantly reminded that for the record, President Obama is the 44th President of the United States. He also happens to be the first President, in more than fifty years since Dwight Eisenhower, to have won both his first election and his re-election with more than 51% of the American votes. President Obama was able to do this despite the vicious attacks from the Republicans and the so called mainstream media and the lukewarm support from many members of Congress in the Democratic party. President Obama is truly a President “of the people and for the people.” No matter how ugly and vicious his opponents have been, the majority of Americans have continued to stand behind President Obama.

        i think the President ignoring cantor’s rudeness is awesome, it shows how insignificant cantor’s words are. Barack Obama is still president and will be by God’s grace for another 3 years

          “Barack Obama is still president and will be by God’s grace for another 3 years”

          That’s the truth and the REALITY that seem to escape people, politicians and media pundits alike, who persist in being rude to, or blatantly denigrating, President Obama. Like it or not, until January 19, 2017, President Barack H. Obama will still be the President of the United States. So the poor idiot member of Congress, who couldn’t stand “looking at the President,” has basically two choices: resign from Congress or go into hiding whenever the President is around, especially during his State of the Union Addresses to Congress.

    Obviously, I’m not for verbally abusing women, and I haven’t read the whole story so maybe I should keep quiet, but I truly think it’s RICH that Joan Walsh is complaining about Twitter feedback she’s been getting relating to her interactions with and about Ezra Klein. She used the term “false equivalence” when she was describing part of it on MSNBC earlier, and I think she said how ludicrous it is that she’s been called an “Obamabot,” since she never held back her criticism of President Obama. Poor baby, somebody said something unkind about her.

    When I first heard her whine, I thought of all the nasty insults President Obama gets daily, from some of these very same people, and – once again – thanked the dear Lord that our President is Barack Obama and not some far-out-left fool with no spine, no guts, and no core.

      From the YouTube description

      Quick preview of the LED light suit I made for my daughter. She is 22 months old and loves wearing the suit. I’ll be uploading a video of her in different locations running around and doing her usual funny stuff.

      Other stuff I’ve done with LED suits:
