The back pay Federal Government
Employees will be getting….it will be going out in overtime as they catch up on all of the work that wasn’t done for about three weeks. Don’t even think about the unopened mail, unprocessed refunds, uncleaned buildings and starting up heating and air conditioning systems.
Our agency was in the process of upgrading our computers before the shutdown. There will be more delay. I worry about the contractors though. How many sustained hard-to-sustain losses because of the unanticipated three-week delay in getting paid? I suspect that what will happen going forward will be clauses that get the contractors some compensation or enough for a rainy day fund due to Congressional malfeasance.
My niece’s husband works for a defense contractor. Funds for the project he was working on ran out last week, but his company allowed him to take his own paid vacation time this week, so – luckily – he didn’t have to miss a beat. Happy for them, but, of course, he’s one person and so many gazillion others were badly affected. I agree; it’s okay for all of us to continue talking about the big defense contractors and their profits, but – like the big federal government – they have real live working people on their payrolls.
I made a tax payment at the very end of September (due October 15). I got a letter from the IRS on the 15th, which was dated October 21 (!) saying that I owed the full amount plus new penalties. I’m thinking, ‘no one is there to open the mail and make deposits’.
Luckily, the check cleared 10/15. This was the end of the extension period and they had to put people on the job to open the mail and deposit the checks.
People who processed payments (per IRS website) were considered “essential”) and had to come in. Refunds and customer service weren’t, so If you were looking for credits and refunds-there’s a backlog.
It took them two weeks to deposit the payment. ‘Essential’ meant you had to be there, but not get paid. I wouldn’t have my heart and soul in it anyway. But all is well.

Tom Cole kvetching on MSNBC that the President needs to lead. AS IF he hasn’t been doing exactly that! Led your sorry asses right over the cliff, idiot.
Totally agree! It’s pissing me off to hear these idiotic Beltway pundits who spout “bi-partisanship” like it’s the holy grail, keep saying how POTUS “needs to lead”, like WTF do you think he’s been doing?
Latest example is Ron Fournier’s latest article. I made the mistake of clicking on an article on Political Wire that provided teaser paragraph and wanted to throw up. These GOPshills need to have their heads smacked to wise up to GOP idiocy.
My worry is, republicans have grasped into the debt situation and not the deficit.
The deficit getting to zero is balancing out books .
Balancing the books from the debt, is a new definition, and impossible.
17 trillion in cuts in ten years as opposed to 700 billion in ten years.
My God!
I really had a sick feeling in my stomach Monday evening, I thought there was a chance that Republicans were that insane and stupid to allow the US to default.
Fortunately, Reid and Pelosi got the job done and we can sigh a bit easier. Yesterday I was in a roller coaster of emotion, on the one hand I was beyond pissed that we got to this point at all. At the same time, so proud of President Obama and the Democratic Leadership for kicking ass. I am totally energized for 2014. Finally I was estatic over Cory Booker being elected next Senator from NJ!
But one shocking statistic I saw was that voter turn out in NJ was only 24%! I get it was a special election, but still! We must do a lot better in 2014! Think I will make a donation to DSCC and DCCC to show my appreciation!
Gracias! I’ve been lurking and catching up on all the great diaries and all the awesome tweets people share here, but it’s been mostly read and dash for me!
My neighbors just got home from Oregon….they flew out and drove back. Their plan was to visit National Parks and Monuments on the way back.
She said they could not get in to any of them and they were re-routed so much that they drove 5,000 which was approx 2,000 more than they would have if everything was open.
I heard from a Democratic congressman on cspan this morning that out of 22,000 national park employees, 20,000 were furloughed. he made the point that these parks stretch across the international date line, for God’s sake, not even just the continent. Trying to allocate those resources was damn near impossible.
The pundits are now talking about one comment “stop focusing on bloggers and lobbyists” – guarantee Jay will get 15 questions on that – none on the substance
Thanks for that wonderful reminder, 99ts. I LOVED when the President said that he gives people the benefit of the doubt and tries to understand their point of view, THEN if they are acting in bad faith, he will crush them.
Good Morning Chips and TOD family. I am grateful to know that we have President Barack H. Obama in the Oval Office this morning. His statement was right on the money. His leadership has always been there, and I am tired of these crapheads talking about his leadership. If he had not lead us and continue to lead us, there fools would not even be known on their crap stations racking in all of the money for their RW owners. These foolish people think we are suckers.
Now as for what we saw today with our wonderful VP at the EPA office, the Chief of Staff, and others at all of the department was part of that leadership. But no, the talking heads will not give President Obama credit for that. But , he was responsible for those actions that you saw this morning. That is the leader that want us to believe that we do not have. They are all full of crap. Plain and simple.
But we are to move on and move FORWARD with President Barack Obama and his team. President Obama is focused on his job and always has been regardless of the crap he has had to smell everyday of his presidency. But do not allow these haters to destroy your faith in our president. President Obama will continue to work hard just like he has been from day one. He is brilliant and has brilliant people around him. He is working for all Americans. And he won both of his elections for this presidency and Lord knows we helped him as we worked all of our behinds off. So do not give in to this negative narrative that is being pumped out daily by these people who are just plain hating on this president. They will do it until he departs DC on Jan. 20, 2017.
But we will stand with him, around him, behind him and for his agenda for the people of this nation to work with honesty, compassion, great leadership, and completely focused minds to let him know that we are with him all of the way. As Bobfr always reminds us: “#TrustBarack.”
Yes, these people will fight him on every level, but we are stronger than these foolish and selfish people. We Will Prevail for the good of this nation. So put goodness at the front door of your space; faith as the greeter, and love as the open hand and let us get to work and not be distracted. I am grateful to see POB’s staff greeting the people all over our nation’s government welcoming these wonderful people back to work. Question: Did you see any Repubs out there welcoming any one of these workers back to work? That is how we work together. But no one mentioned that today. So they can STHU and leave us alone. We will get this done and we welcome any reasonable person(s) to come along side of us and work for the good of our nation together. But we will Not stand by and not support President Obama and VP Biden.
Now, TOD family have a beautiful day, and get ready for our new family member’s arrival, right? Our Danny!!! Nothing will stop us. Do not forget to keep our support at OFA as well. Did another $20.14 last evening. Keep your spirits up and only allow those things that are lovely, beautiful, graceful, and positive to enter your space today. (((((( I love you all so much))))))HZ
Great Day!
Carol!!!!!!!
Chips!!!!!
bring it, buddy!
😆
Hi Tod family,
WTG, carol and 4more, good day everyone!
The back pay Federal Government

Guarantee at least 1 in 10 or more computers give grief starting up having been turned off for 15 days.

No telling what some people had to do to come in to work without getting even gas money. Some people have to drive to work, especially on third shift.
I wouldn’t bust my ass either. I’d do my work but it’s pretty damn hard to be enthusiastic when you have nut jobs playing with your livelihood.
Bringing this one over from the last thread – will I never learn to check before I post!
Not a good day for Gov McDonnell – the GOP seem to have multiple problems in the states – despite the media praising all those RW governors

Ooooooh 99ts, again?! 😆
And with LL last night – I am distraught – 1st world problems.
😆 Okay, we really need to work on this 99ts-warning-system!!!!
I fear it is operator error – or age related 🙂 🙂
Ha, I know that feeling – even though I’m only 21!
I thought a decision had been made that you were 23? Perhaps I misheard – age does that also, too.
Sssssssh, I’m losing count!

Another famous TOD tweeter 🙂 – a star you are
You’re my hero!
Excellent!
Tom Cole kvetching on MSNBC that the President needs to lead. AS IF he hasn’t been doing exactly that! Led your sorry asses right over the cliff, idiot.
Who’s Tom Cole and why should I care? Seriously, is there a reason? There are mega-asshats on every cable station 24/7.

In fact I’m hearing this morning that HHS was going to do this anyway.
My worry is, republicans have grasped into the debt situation and not the deficit.

He’s having too much fun!!
He’s having a ball!!!
Is that Valerie Jarrett in the front row? and Jay Carney at the end?
Hi 99ts, yes on both accounts. HZ
Blitzer: ” Let’s get a critic of the President back in to this conversation ”
( Some guy with a British accent from the Heritage Foundation .)
” Obamacare is going to cost a trillion dollars ” !

Very powerful pinkbunny. TY
Hi stranger. Nice to see you around these parts.
Gracias! I’ve been lurking and catching up on all the great diaries and all the awesome tweets people share here, but it’s been mostly read and dash for me!
Keep up the good work! 😉
The Republicans will most likely now say they CREATED 800,000 jobs in one day today
The Senate confirmed Caroline Kennedy as next ambassador to japan.
The President

She said they could not get in to any of them and they were re-routed so much that they drove 5,000 which was approx 2,000 more than they would have if everything was open.
hopefully they know already, or you’ll let them know, that all that was 100% because of republicans everywhere.
I heard from a Democratic congressman on cspan this morning that out of 22,000 national park employees, 20,000 were furloughed. he made the point that these parks stretch across the international date line, for God’s sake, not even just the continent. Our President is preaching – LISTEN!! 🙂 🙂
c’mon man. let’s see the double podium slap. yes!!
wonder why he didn’t include tv talking heads. maybe just misspoke.
He did. I heard him specifically say “talking heads.” That’s whom he was referring to.
must of missed it. i did hear him reference radio, but didn’t hear tv. no matter, it was a great line!!
He didn’t say “tv” but he said “talking heads” which I took to mean the TV PUNDIOTS who yap nonstop for outrageous, undeserved salaries.
The pundits are now talking about one comment “stop focusing on bloggers and lobbyists” – guarantee Jay will get 15 questions on that – none on the substance
this was a really muscular, serious lecture. He ain’t taking this shit anymore.
I see over at Raw Story that POS Cruz was busy greeting govt workers as they came back to work today!
They got gall, that’s for sure. Unmitigated gall.
PBO has had it with the idjits.
Thanks for that wonderful reminder, 99ts. I LOVED when the President said that he gives people the benefit of the doubt and tries to understand their point of view, THEN if they are acting in bad faith, he will crush them.
This speech is required viewing.
“Disagreement cannot mean dysfunction.”
WOW! That was a Statement! Thank you President Obama
President Obama: “You don’t like a particular policy, or a particular President, then argue for your position and win an election.”
TRUE THAT.
Morning Obots! New post: http://theobamadiary.com/2013/10/17/the-wisdom-of-winston-wolfe/
How proud am I of our President?! I always am but I keep getting prouder and prouder every day.
Is anybody else as speechless as I am right now?
Our President embodies leadership, every day.
That is true – the media had a huge role to play in this Shutdown and needed to be called out.
