I hope it chafes him BAD!!! I also hope this disgusting, despicable display today wakes some people up to see what these people are really about. I just cannot believe that the majority of Americans approve of this kind of behavior.
Bob…..can you point me to the long piece you did on the fact that the civil war is not over and we have to finish the reconstruction? Thanks. I want to show it to my husband…..we were talking about this horrible display at the White House. He said simply, “I just feel so sorry for President Obama sometimes.

    • October 13, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Must say I was very pissed about the whole confederate flag racist act. I kinda felt like I did when President Obama had to produce his long-form birth certificate. I find it interesting that no GOP elected leader has condemned any racist action against President Obama. I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave these people a pat on the back.

As you always say Bobfr, “I Trust Barack”.

    • October 13, 2013 at 11:40 pm

I just read Hertzberg’s piece in the New Yorker. Makes a compelling case. At the end of the day, PBO will not allow default. And the debt ceiling law directly contravenes the 14th Amendment.

      • 21 nathkatun7
        October 14, 2013 at 12:34 am

That was an excellent piece that had me thinking that may be people who want the President to invoke Section 4, of the 14th Amendment may have a case. But, as I have been discussing with Bobfr, I am still troubled by Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, which plainly states that it’s the Congress that has the power to enforce all four sections of the Amendment by appropriate legislation. Then there is Article I, Section 8, of the original Constitution, which entrusts the “power of the purse” exclusively to Congress, including the power “to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and the general welfare of the United States.”

President Obama has been right on the mark: It’s Congress’s Constitutional responsibility to fund the government and honor U.S. debts! By shutting down the government and threatening to default on U.S. debt, the Republican members of Congress are violating their Constitutional responsibilities and mandates. Under Article VI, all members of Congress have to take an oath which binds them to support the Constitution. One of those Constitutional obligation that members of Congress have to support is PAYING U.S. DEBTS!

By the way way, the best example to show how the Framers of the Constitution placed such high importance on honoring debts is in paragraph 1 of Article VI:

“All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.”

Amazingly, the revered “Founding Fathers” deeply understood the grave importance of honoring U.S. debts, including debts incurred by the loosely Confederated 13 former English colonies before they had actually become the United States; yet, the modern right wingers, who never tire of reminding everyone about the sacred U.S. Constitution when it comes to the 2nd and 10th Amendments, want to default on U.S. debts that are legally authorized by Congress. And these morons have the audacity to go around claiming that they revere the Constitution.

Again, even before the passage of Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, Congress, under Article I, Section 8, paragraph 1, was already clearly charged by the U.S. Constitution with the power and responsibilities of financing the federal government and paying U.S. debts.

        • October 14, 2013 at 2:42 am

“Again, even before the passage of Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, Congress, under Article I, Section 8, paragraph 1, was already clearly charged by the U.S. Constitution with the power and responsibilities of financing the federal government and paying U.S. debts.”

Dear nath, you have been so insightful and cogent regarding the obligations Congress has to ensuring that the USA never causes anyone to QUESTION the ‘good faith and credit’ of the United States of America.

As you know, since I’ve been adamant that I’m neither a lawyer or a Constitutional scholar but merely a citizen, my perhaps naive efforts have been focused on trying to bring attention to the fact that the CRIME has already been committed.

The GOP have caused the ‘validity of the public debt of the United States’ to be ‘QUESTIONED.’

And, be it the Congress itself – appropriately under Sec 5 of the 14th as you have reminded everyone – or the DoJ or maybe even citizens, those who have violated their Oath of Office by violating the Constitution should be indicted and prosecuted.

Had I seen your fine comment before posting the tweet at the bottom of this thread, I would have posted it here.

Bottom line – we are in a Civil War. The enemy could not be more obvious. The next 72-96 hours determine the future of the United States of America in no less a profound way than at its inception, its 19th Century Civil War, WW II, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and 9/11.

He somehow managed to stay in the game! How you ask? I have no clue…….. he was roaming right field for the remainder of the 8th inning looking like he was in alot of pain. Then he had to bat 3rd in the top of the 9th. At 38 he is a gamer…… I would put him with Andruw Jones and Jim Edmunds as the best center fielders of the last 20yrs. Ken Griffey Jr. before this current crop…..

You know what, hopefruit, it’s incredible how the media are so quicker and eager to find any deluded, dishonest, self-serving and self-hating, Black people to help cover-up right wing racist attacks on President Obama. The media know exactly what they are doing! They are trying to ease the conscience of non black people who may find it very offensive the way President Obama is being treated. The media also know exactly that these Blacks they prominently cover trashing President Obama do not represent the views of the vast majority of people in Black communities. Clearly, the media’s goal is to try to pretend that the attacks on, and the constant trashing of, President Obama has nothing to do with racism.

Overall, Obama Has Done More For Veterans Than Any President In the Past 30 Years.
Republicans and conservatives have spent 4 years spreading the lie that President Obama hasn’t done anything for veterans. They have repeated it 100x per day for all 4 years and spent millions promoting their lies. The thing about records is that they are recorded. So let’s set the record straight.

UT – I was over on the last thread, catching up, and when I saw “This is the face of America,” I almost didn’t want to come here, because I was afraid there would be some of today’s negativity mixed in, lining that face. So what a pleasant surprise to see images of the America I want to see, right here waiting! Thank you. Just the right touch.

Wow, I’m just one little tweeter who maybe gets some R/Ts but anything I sent out or R/Td myself today about that damn confederate flag really took off, like a microcosm, perhaps. I’m sure that happened to all of you who did the same, on your timelines. I am seriously wondering tonight if that one hateful, hurtful, symbolic gesture by the goon with the confederate flag is perhaps going to turn out to be one of the watershed moments we have been needing in our country, most recently since Jan. 20, 2009. God, I hope and pray it is.

Forget the glass half full (which we really need) … I’m going for the silver lining in that cloud (which we really, really need). God bless President Obama and Vice President Biden, all snug in their beds tonight thinking about what they can do for our country and the world tomorrow.

In this current political environment of Government shut-down and threats of a possible U.S. Default, my greatest disappointments has been the U.S. corporate media. The U.S. media have, for the most part, failed miserably to tell the American people the TRUTH. That’s why Ted Cruz, the leader of government shut down, is able to get away with speaking to people who are supposedly protesting the government shut down of public parks.

    • October 14, 2013 at 2:53 am

“…. my greatest disappointments has been the U.S. corporate media.”

When plutocrats own the media it is no different than when fascists, communists or any other suppressive societal organization does. The bedrock of democracy is a media that enables dialectic and is relentless in ‘fact checking.’

Hello Nath – the media holds equal responsibility with the GOP for what has happened. They have aided and abetted the GOP because the black guy didn’t treat them as they thought they should be treated. Prime example – Ed Henry & Co.

The media joined with the GOP in Jan 2009 & have been supporting their goal of defeating PBO every single day. Just listening to the sadness in their voices – Nov 2012 – says it all. Despite the polls the media still thought Romney was a shoe in.

The US default will impact every country in the world – badly – but I would still prefer that no-one pay the blackmailers – their deceit has gone on way too long – I cannot think of one republican who cares about what they are doing to the country and the world. Not one has voted with the Senate dems, the house dems nor has anyone supported their President.

In some strange way I am glad today happened – the racism was out in the open for everyone to see. The media showed their disrespect of the President by pretending it did not happen.

Time to bring out the famous photo of Then-Senator Obama sitting in his office with a photo of Muhammad Ali prominently displayed.

    Yes, one is politics and the other boxing but there is a relevant relationship;

Those who know PBO best say he will let you hit and then he will strike back hard – PBO said so in one interview which we all know.
So like Mr. Muhammad Ali PBO:
    – has mastered the “Rope-a-Dope” and applied it to politics.
    – Can “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”

    It is therefore a good time to pull out this famous photo and have some fun with;
