I think these results prove that the democrats can take back the house. It will be hard but if everyone puts up 100 % effort then we can win. And for everyone saying that the election is a year away and things can change, I agree but we should remember that things started going south for the democrats during late 2009 into 2010.

    • October 10, 2013 at 7:49 pm

Precisely. Everyone who is saying that “these polls are too early to mean anything” were crying out “WAAAAAAAAAVE!!!” in 2009. IOKIYAR.

      • 33 jziglar
        October 10, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Yep, I remember the media talking about the democrats losing their majority during late 2009. I can guarantee that the republicans will continue to do stupid things going into 2014.

Zizi, did you know that your ‘Baltimore Massacre’ post formed the core at another PBO supporter’s blog today? It’s that blogger that you first introduced me to a couple of weeks ago – Jim Stuart. I’m beginning to think of his blog as our ‘youngest brother blog’. It’s not the first time I’ve noticed him tag-teaming with TOD, so to speak (He always gives credit).

/waving/ ‘Hi Jim! Nice to know you drop in here. I love the calm ambiance of *your* ‘New Blog’.”

      //………………………………..

n the clip above, he [PBO] responds to a question from then Rep. Marsha Blackburn as to why he won’t take input from Republicans. He replies that he has done so, that the ACA bill is founded on some GOP ideas. And then he warns the GOP not to raise the rhetoric level too high, nor draw the distinctions in too black and white a fashion (between GOP positions and his), for this would allow the Party almost no maneuvering room to craft bipartisan solutions to the country’s problems.

And, of course, that is precisely what has happened in the past 45 months: GOP rhetoric and extremism has effectively eliminated the common ground that Obama in Baltimore was arguing existed. And when some common ground seemed to have been found – Immigration reform in the Senate, the Tea Party in the House worked quickly and hard to shut it down – to literally wipe any common territory off the political map.

Which brings us to now. The GOP has taken themselves into a negotiating box canyon, where there really is no shared ground, where the President has no choice but to require unconditional surrender. Anything less would be recognizing, rewarding, and even blessing a mode of political bargaining that would surely, if allowed to continue, alter the constitutional balance of power. ………………..

    • October 10, 2013 at 8:17 pm

But they’re acting like this is frigging GAME.

See below re: National Parks in western states.

There’s only 1 October a year, and the GOP House has screwed a lot of people in their kind of districts (rural, small communities) from making a living if they depend on tourism to National Parks.

The beltway is so insulated, they have no idea that some of the best weather of the year in the West is in October.

      • 66 forus50
        October 10, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Oh yeah, it’s awful. That’s why hell awaits them. I was just out on vacation on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state; most of it is the Olympic National Park and we couldn’t hike in it. The trip had been planned for a year with my two brothers (one from Colorado and one who lives there) so we were really bummed. Fortunately there were other areas to hike but it shut down the day I got out there.

        • October 10, 2013 at 8:49 pm

          Exactly.

Many people plan their trip to the park as carefully and as far in advance as you did.

Think of the European visitors. I think it was an Arizona Highways article that I read a few years ago about how the Germans LOVE the American West. Hoping that those who are visiting now still do.

Such an embarrassment for no damn good reason.

        • October 10, 2013 at 8:54 pm

It’s not just in the West. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is THE most visited national park in the nation!!!! The FALL COLORS season is THE time for this area. Our entire region and especially Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are being devastated by this.

  25. October 10, 2013 at 8:08 pm

SLC Tribune front page bemoaning the closure of National Parks and Monuments (Oct is such an important month for these tiny communities that support the mountain bikers and others who enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the 4 corners area of the US — my fav area when it isn’t 110 degrees).

Saw John McCain tweet on this today.

And look here, the idiot Nevada Gov refuses to accept the offer. (Don’t you think NV gets some revenue from Las Vegas casinos and Tahoe ski resorts?)

  32. October 10, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Saw only one tweet in my Twitter feed about Nobel Prize for Literature going to Alice Munro. I’ve unfollowed almost all journalists, but still, if a man had won I think I would have seen more than one tweet. (I’ve never read Munro, so I have no opinion about this selection).

But the buzz for Nobel Peace Prize this year is Malala Yousafzai.

    @JeffersonObama retweeted anti-Malala sentiments — #DramaQueen.

Right, you try getting shot just for going to school and now using your force of will to change the world. That ranks up there with a reality TV star for accomplishment — not.

From a few days ago, an article about her hometown (where she is now). Love the picture in the article:

Alice Munro is an excellent choice for the Nobel Literature prize! As my daughter said….”It’s about time!” Another excellent Canadian writer…..countrywoman of Margaret Atwood, but her writing is much different.
I love her writing and her stories……..I heard a brief statement from her on the BBC News….she said she didn’t even know she was on a list until yesterday………I’m thrilled for her.

    • October 10, 2013 at 9:05 pm

Posted this yesterday, but the MSM needs to get its act together and not try be SCOTUS-like in their tipping public opinion the direction they want…

      -wardrums (Syria) checkmark
-GOP circus show (2012, clown after clown) checkmark
-2016 candidates (Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Hillary) checkmark
      etc.

Just start with the first item on this list… “Dems have already agreed to fund the govt at Repubican levels” and go from there.

      October 10, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Forgive me for saying this, but I don’t understand. Is President Obama negotiating while the government is shut down ? I think he’s reassured that the repubs won’t try hostage taking anytime soon since it has proven to be a political disaster for them, but still… as a matter of principle, President Obama said he would NOT negotiate with a gun on the head of the american people.

The timing of every statement, and every action in both houses of Congress will be important. I’m pretty sure the repubs will try to say that they forced the President to negotiate, while the President will say he agreed to negotiate only AFTER he was promised a clean CR and a clean raise of the debt ceiling. Or something like that.

  39. 101 forus50

I’ll tell you what hasn’t been reported on. We handle thousands of mortgage applications where i work and we cannot allow any loan to close if they are a government employee because we cannot verify employment. So fucking stupid this shutdown.

In addition, we have to get tax return transcripts on all loans prior to loan approval and the IRS is not able to provide them due to the shutdown. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and some others have temporarily waived this requirement but many other investors haven’t. So shit is so screwed up as these people cannot close; have to get lock extensions and it’s a lot of stress and worry. And once they do re-open it will take weeks if not months to clear the backlog at the IRS.

    • October 10, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Yeah forus50, I work in consumer lending in a CU in Albuquerque. In the last two weeks our loan application volume has gone phfffffft. The bottom has fallen out. We have a wide field of membership, but nonetheless the government is a huge employer here. Interesting how remaggotians were always using the false scare tactic of the –GASP! — UNCERTAINTY boogeyman…..and here they are surpassing all previous achievements in manufacturing UNCERTAINTY.

Not vouching for this—-just what I just heard Jim Acosta report on CNN (according to his Dem “source” in the big mtg)——that PBO said he welcomed the offer to raise debt ceiling and would sign a short termer but not with a shutdown. Boehner said if they end the shutdown, they want “something”. PBO said he won’t deal. And that’s where it’s at.

    • October 10, 2013 at 9:16 pm

He has told them from the very beginning of their domestic terror rampage that he will not provide ransom, of any kind. Open the Government, Pay the Bills. He is not going to back down.

      • 115 hopefruit2
        October 10, 2013 at 9:53 pm

Exactly – that’s the position he has maintained from day 1. Nothing has changed, and the GOP and some in the MSM are frantic because they are now sensing how resolute he is.

  42. October 10, 2013 at 9:14 pm

When we get done with the GOP in 2014 and 2016 it should take them at least a decade to gain any respectability as a conservative opposition party.
