Happy Birthday to Jackie4Obama, and Happy Birthday to Bill R! This news conference was for YOU!! (but we will all enjoy sharing it!) PBO ~ thank you, Mr. President! Back to lurking! 🙂

I remember a time when the entire press corps would rise and stand when the President entered to start a press conference and then they would stand again when he left, usually saying, “Thank you, Mr. President.”

I think that ended in January of 2009.

Japa and amk, I just said that out loud two days ago as I was thinking about PBO and his presidency. Since I have been involved in following politics, I have Never seen this much disrespect for the presidency.

Amk, you are so right. “You respect the presidency, if not the president.” Let us continue to put it on record. HZ

Your mention of this reminds me of a moment that still makes me burn. A young female reporter asked the President a question and as he started to answer she interrupted and asked, “Can’t you just answer yes or no. Is that so hard?!” The entire time she was seated with her legs crossed at the ankles and extended into the aisle. Never found out where she was from, but I’ve never seen her at another presser. Thank Goodness!

I was going to save you some vino. Honest I was. I know how you like to run a tight, serious ship and you know how rowdy we can get.

Especially when PBO tells the Prime Jackals to sit down and STFU so he can answer some decent questions that weren’t written by Ted Cruz, for once!

        Positively giddy, I am.

I’m sure I should be quaking in my boots because Karl/Toad/Henry might be mean to PBO in retaliation.

Join the whiners on the RWNJ side of the aisle, you worthless shills!

Rep. Markwayne Mullin (Oklahoma) made the case for cooperation among the branches of government in the debt ceiling and shutdown fight– all four of them.

“This country isn’t ran by just one individual it’s ran by four branches, but three branches that are in control of this,” Mullin said Tuesday. “As long as those three branches control it, then we all have to figure out how to negotiate. Not all of us is going to get 100% of what we want, but we should do what’s right.”

I’ve been trying to get the AARP to act with urgency on the debt ceiling issue, making it clear what the implications are for seniors who would not have SS checks or medicare reimbursements. On the phone I was told that a lot of seniors are calling in worried and the AARP is concerned about starting a panic. I urged them to start a panic because seniors needed to get on the phones to call REPUBLICAN congressmen. I was told to send my concerns in an e-mail, which I was assured would be read and addressed. If you can, go to AARPinternational.org, press contact and send a message that we need urgent action from the AARP, that they need to identify that it’s Republicans, not Democrats, that are threatening Social Security and that they needed to give lists, numbers and messages to deliver. Frankly, I’m a little dismayed with the idea that seniors need to be ‘protected’ from fear when in fact they need to be hopping mad that the Republicans are playing fast and loose with their survival. It won’t take a minute to add your voice.

Excuse this, but——I hope my 2 day old granddaughter isn’t a tea party Republican. She’s acting like a BABY! She’s holding her parents hostage! She’s demanding ransom. She has let them know that she will make these “waa waaa” noises unless she can sleep in their arms.
Haha, just kidding—-she’s not a teepee Repub and never will be—-just wanted to work her into the convo :)—–and her preferred method of snoozing is in someone’s arms, but that is also true for many.
Actually she’s being “pretty good”, “not perfect, but pretty good”, the acceptable standard in our fam. And I just saw the sweetest photos ever of her departing the hospital (parents did a haha Royal Baby pose out front) and of her happily snoozing away at home, still in her adorable going home outfit and deep rose hat with a big flower on it. Guess they didn’t want to disturb her by removing the hat—–“let sleeping dogs lie” was my motto also.
Get to see her next week in person, will let her hold me hostage and sleep in my arms—-because she’s a baby, a real baby.

        • October 8, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Indeed, hf. I was actually amazed he was capable of asking a reasonable question – probably shocked the President, as well 🙂

As President Obama noted, whether a clean CR and clean debt limit bill passes or fails, what matters it is the sworn obligation of every Member of Congress to fund the government and pay the bills. No escaping those Constitutional, i.e., legal requirements. He knows, as does every one of those Members that they will be held accountable, the only issue now is how much more damage do they cause before they go on record with their votes.

“As President Obama noted, whether a clean CR and clean debt limit bill passes or fails, what matters it is the sworn obligation of every Member of Congress to fund the government and pay the bills. No escaping those Constitutional, i.e., legal requirements.”

Bob, this is exactly my position! Every member of Congress is Constitutionally obligated to do two things: pass a budget to fund the government, and to ensure that all U.S. debts are honored. Paying U.S. debts was so important to the Framers that they even provided this in Article VI, paragraph 1:

“All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.”

That’s how important the obligation to honor U.S. debts was to the Framers of the U.S. Constitution that the tea baggers claim to revere.

Again, I am with the President on this: Every member of Congress (Senator/Representative) MUST go on record to indicate their support or opposition to Federal government shut down, and their support or opposition to U.S. government default! No more hiding behind the claim that there are not enough votes in support! The refusal to allow a vote on a clean CR to end government shut down, and a clean CR to raise the debt ceiling, allows the so called moderate and sane Republicans to talk from both sides of their mouths. I want all 535 members of Congress on record, with Ayes and Nays, on both a clean CR to end the government shut down and a clean CR to raise the debt ceiling. That way, we the people can determine who is responsible for the destruction of our Republic. I am tired of the games! The GOP leaders of the House of Representatives MUST allow members to vote and let chips fall where they may.

The fact that they won’t allow members to vote tells me that Boehner/Cantor et al know that they a fucked regardless of the outcome of the votes. If, on the one hand, the majority of members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, vote for a clean CR, Boehner would be revealed for being a chicken-shit leader who shut down the government simply out of fear of a tiny faction of the extremist wing of his party. On the other hand, if the majority of the Republican House members, including the so called moderates, vote to reject a clean CR then they will be held responsible by the people for shutting down the government. By the way, the same scenario applies to a clean CR to raise the debt ceiling.

The Democrats are ready to go on record to show where they stand. But the bully GOP cowards refuse to go on record with their votes. Personally, I am disgusted with the so called Republican moderates who talk from both sides of their mouths!

        • 102 cookemom
          October 8, 2013 at 6:32 pm

I don’t trust any of those 20 or so pubs who said they’d vote for the clean CR. They are straddling the fence for their own purposes. I think it’d be a different story if they really had to actually vote. My biggest fear is that Boehner is right, he knows he’s right, and doesn’t have the votes and is just waiting for the right moment to hold the vote which will fail, then he does the ‘told ya so’ dance.

I’d rather see the discharge signatures first, then let’s demand the vote.

          • 103 nathkatun7
            October 9, 2013 at 2:45 am

Sorry, but I want every member of Congress, Democrat and Republican to go on record with his/her vote on whether they are for or against government shut down; or for and against raising the debt ceiling to pay legally authorized U.S. debts! I say vote and let the chips fall where they may! At least we would know who is for and against government shut down, and who is for or against honoring U.S. debts. I am sick and tired of the so called moderate Republicans “straddling the fence for their own purposes.” They need to be forced to go on the record with their votes so that people in the districts they represent will know where they stand.

      • October 8, 2013 at 6:59 pm

I liked that one of the questions during the press conference gave President Obama the opportunity to explain why options — e.g., The 14th amendment or creating coin — were not good alternatives to Congress just doing its job and raising the debt limit.

Often quick fixes can create problems; some unintentional and unanticipated. The quick fix doesn’t always resolve the problem. It just pushes it out. I’m sure that is one of the reasons the President is not keen about issuing Executive Orders.

    • October 8, 2013 at 6:35 pm

      Agree, swbluega!

As I wrote yesterday, the real edge the Sec 4 of the 14th (and, as nath noted Sec 3 of the 14th) is that, by virtue of their Oath of Office, every Member of Congress would be breaking the law, literally, if they do not pay the bills.

The language is crystal clear – “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law …. shall not be questioned.”

What they have already done, once before in 2011, and, again during the past several weeks, is cause that question to be asked. That is why I’ve been tweeting and writing to the DoJ and others urging action to stop what is a manifestly dangerous violation of our Constitution.

Thanks Bob, for the shout out on my take on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment! But even more important in my view Bob (probably the reason why President repeatedly talks about Congress’ responsibilities to pass a budget and pay legally authorized U.S. debts) is Congress’ responsibility under Article I, Section 8, which says:

“The Congress shall have the Power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the DEBTS and provide for the common defense and the general welfare of the United States….”

Moreover, the Framers of the U. S. Constitution strongly believed in the importance of honoring the country’s debts that they included, in Article VI, paragraph 1, the provision to honor the debts entered into under the Articles of the Confederation:

“All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.”

And as you noted the language of the 14th Amendment about honoring U.S. public debt “is crystal clear.”

As far as I am concerned, Congress’s failure to finance the government (resulting in a shut down) and impending refusal to honor the debt of the United States, are clear abdication (I would even say violation) of Congress’ Constitutional responsibility.
